The resolution\r\nencourages individuals, families, and households across the United States to\r\ntake part in the Census so that all communities can be counted. The\r\nCensus is essential to our democracy, ensuring that every person is counted and\r\nreceives the representation and services they deserve, said Senator Schatz.\r\nBy passing this resolution, the Senate made clear that we are committed to\r\nreaching all communities and achieving a full and accurate count in 2020. Census\r\ndata is essential for the government to make informed decisions about the\r\nfuture of its people and ensure that all Americans have equal representation.\r\nI'm proud of the Senate passage of our bipartisan resolution that recognizes\r\nthe importance and the significance of the 2020 Census and ensures it is quick,\r\nconcise, and easy to complete, said Senator Murkowski. As the largest\r\nand most rural state, Alaska has one of the hardest populations to count in the\r\ndecennial U.S. Census. Accurate census data provides crucial information for\r\nresearch and planning purposes, directing fair funding allotments for the federal\r\nprograms that are vital to rural and Native American populations, and enabling\r\nthe enforcement of federal nondiscrimination laws. I'm glad to shine a\r\nspotlight on our efforts to ensure an accurate census and look forward to the\r\nfirst census count in the nation that will take place in Toksook Bay, Alaska in\r\nJanuary 2020. The\r\n2020 Census is a constitutionally mandated undertaking. The data collected is\r\nused to properly allocate seats for the U.S. House of Representatives and state\r\nlegislatures. It also directs more than $800 billion annually in federal\r\nfunding to state and local communities. The\r\nresolution recognizes the importance and significance of the 2020 Census and\r\nencourages all people to participate. It concludes that it is the civic duty of\r\nevery person to ensure that the 2020 Census is as accurate as possible. The\r\nresolution now goes to the House of Representatives for passage. The\r\nSchatz-Murkowski resolution is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin\r\n(D-Wis.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Cory Booker\r\n(D-N.J.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Maria Cantwell\r\n(D-Wash.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Chris Coons (D-Del.),\r\nCatherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Dick Durbin\r\n(D-Ill.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Maggie Hassan\r\n(D-N.H.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Mazie Hirono (D- Hawaii), Ron Johnson\r\n(R-Wis.), Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Angus King (I-Maine), Amy\r\nKlobuchar (D-Minn.), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley\r\n(D-Ore.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Gary Peters\r\n(D-Mich.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.),\r\nKyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Dan\r\nSullivan (R-Alaska), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Mark\r\nWarner (D-Va.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.). The\r\nresolution is supported by a number\r\nof organizations including the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National\r\nLeague of Cities, the National Association of Counties, National the\r\nAssociation of Towns and Townships, the Census Project, NAACP, NALEO\r\nEducational Fund, Asian Americans Advancing Justice AAJC, National Congress\r\nof American Indians, Service Employees International Union, National Education\r\nAssociation, Nielsen, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Google.
