Markey\r\n(D-Mass.), and Congressman William R. Keating (MA-09), today sent a letter to\r\nthe two top officials in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), calling on\r\nthem to adopt the recommendation of the USACE's New England District and\r\nreplace both Cape Cod Canal Bridges.The USACE's New England\r\nDistrict recently concluded in its draft Major Rehabilitation Evaluation Report that the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges are\r\nstructurally deficient and in desperate need of replacement. The New England\r\nDistrict further determined that a full replacement of both bridges is more\r\ncost-effective than repairing and rehabilitating the existing structures.\r\nSenators Warren and Markey, and Congressman Keating, have previouslyapplauded this report and\r\nrecommendation as significant progress toward addressing the needs of these two\r\nvital infrastructure projects.In order to further the New\r\nEngland District's recommendation, Senator Markey and the offices of Senator\r\nWarren and Congressman Keating recentlymet with\r\nfederal, state, and local stakeholders to discuss a joint financing plan to replace\r\nthe Bourne and Sagamore Bridges. In today's letter, these Massachusetts\r\nlawmakers expressed their concern about the possibility discussed at this\r\nmeeting that the USACE's national headquarters may still choose to repair and\r\nrehabilitate the existing Canal bridges rather than build two new structures as\r\nthe New England District recommended.Replacing both the Bourne and\r\nSagamore is not only the best solution for the Cape and Islands, it is the only\r\nviable long-term solution for the nearly 250,000 residents and businesses of\r\nthe region who rely on this vital connection to the rest of\r\nMassachusetts,wrote the Massachusetts lawmakers in their letter to\r\nLieutenant General Todd T.
