Gabe Vasquez’s Bill to Protect Rural Jobs Signed into Law 2024-12-26 2024 2024-12 Democrat House NM Gabe Vasquez V000136 vasquez.house.gov vasquez https://vasquez.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (N.M.-02)’s Rural Installation Job Protection Act was signed into law by President Joe Biden after passing the Senate and House with bipartisan support. The bill protects jobs on rural military installations and ensures that the Department of Defense (DoD) will be transparent with Congress before making decisions that could hurt local economies, safeguarding the future of workers and families who rely on these installations. “Folks who are hired to supplement training programs at military installations such as Holloman Force Base contribute to our national security. That’s why my bill ensures that their jobs—and the local economies that depend on them—will be protected,” said Vasquez. “The Department of Defense must be transparent with Congress when making decisions that impact rural installations. We must ensure that folks who choose to live in rural communities can continue to contribute to a strong defense infrastructure, and it is needed now more than ever. My bill, included in the NDAA, will ensure transparency and accountability and even the playing field for communities like Alamogordo and Las Cruces.” Rural communities like Alamogordo rely on the thousands of good paying contractor jobs at Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range. The Rural Installation Job Protection Act protects jobs by requiring the DoD to notify Congress before canceling civilian contracts that impact 50 or more jobs at rural military installations. This law will ensure that rural communities that rely on military installations are not left behind. Vasquez’s bill was passed in the final bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which was signed into law on December 23. As the only Member of the New Mexico delegation to serve on an Armed Services Committee, Vasquez has worked to support New Mexico’s service members, families and installations to ensure New Mexico remains at the forefront of our national defense. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

Gabe Vasquez Votes for Government Spending Bill to Prevent Shutdown, Ensure Critical Funding for Disaster Assistance 2024-12-20 2024 2024-12 Democrat House NM Gabe Vasquez V000136 vasquez.house.gov vasquez https://vasquez.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) voted in favor of a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government and prevent a government shutdown, supporting New Mexico’s farmers, families and service members. Vasquez also emphasized that Congress should prioritize a stable budget process to provide long-term certainty for the American public and federal agencies. “Today, I voted to avoid a government shutdown and stop the Republican chaos in favor of hard-working New Mexicans who would have been impacted by yet another manufactured crisis,” said Vasquez. “By voting in favor of the bill, I’m supporting farmers, communities devastated by natural disasters, service men and women and their families and many more. I’ll continue to be a champion for New Mexicans and support New Mexican values.” The continuing resolution–which passed with bipartisan support–includes vital funding for wildfire recovery, disaster relief, economic development and key extensions for health care and social services. The continuing resolution extended the Farm Bill until September 30, 2025, ensuring critical farm programs do not lapse at the end of this year. In addition, $166 million was included for economic aid and disaster assistance for New Mexican farmers to help with crop losses due to drought and wildfires. However, Republicans did not include funding for reimbursements for people whose SNAP benefits were stolen or $14.5 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act for climate-smart agriculture initiatives that farmers rely on. On the House Agriculture Committee, Vasquez will continue to fight to pass a full five-year Farm Bill for New Mexico’s producers. The bill also includes critical disaster assistance for New Mexico, such as $1.5 billion for the Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon Fire Fund to support wildfire recovery efforts in New Mexico and other impacted regions. Vasquez applauded the bill’s support for rural patients and hospitals. The bill allows Medicaid patients to continue using telehealth options, … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

"With Ranking Member Grijalva stepping down as the lead Democrat of this Committee, which is critical for tribal communities, there are big shoes to fill to ensure the federal government fulfills its treaty and trust responsibilities to Tribal Nations. Representative Stansbury has Representative Grijalva’s backing; and, we have witnessed first-hand her fierce commitment to protecting tribal traditional ways of life and strengthening the government-to-government relationship. She has gone to the mat for the Tribe in her efforts to protect sacred Oak Flat, and we worked with her on the successful legislative battle to protect sacred Chaco Canyon this Congress. "Like Representative Grijalva, she is a breath of fresh air in the U.S. Congress, giving 100% to assist Tribes because it is the right thing to do. Sadly, many Members of Congress say they support and champion tribes; but, when push comes to shove, they will support other Democratic constituencies over tribes every time when there are opposing positions. This was the old way of House Democrats that Representative Grijalva changed. We do not want to go back to the old way. "Representative Stansbury has the vision to continue the legacy of Representative Grijalva’s historic tenure. She not only has the experience and relationships to continue partnering with Tribal Nations across the country but also the expertise in protecting this country’s natural resources, having worked on Interior issues at OMB, worked at the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and now serving as a key M… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

Vasquez was instrumental in ensuring that the NDAA supports service members, enhances national security and prioritizes the needs of rural communities, including those in New Mexico. “As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I worked across the aisle to pass the NDAA to strengthen our national security and address the critical needs of our service members and their families,” said Vasquez. “The provisions I secured will directly benefit New Mexico and our service members, including a historic pay raise, job protections for our rural service members and expanded access to reproductive care.” Vasquez’s Rural Installation Job Protection Act was passed in the final NDAA. His legislation requires the Department of Defense (DoD) to notify Congress before canceling contracts that impact 50 or more jobs at rural military installations, protecting jobs at bases like White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) and ensuring that rural communities that rely on military installations are not left behind. Vasquez also secured substantial pay raises for service members. The final bill includes a 14.5% pay increase for junior enlisted service members and a 4.5% increase for all other service members, providing critical financial support for those who serve in the Armed Forces. Vasquez played a leading role in protecting LGBTQ+ rights, diversity efforts and access to reproductive health care. He ensured that harmful Republican-led provisions—such as those targeting LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive health care—were stripped from the bill. If successful, Rep. Stansbury would make history as the first woman to serve as either Chair or Ranking Member of the Committee. This would follow on the historic tenure of the current Ranking Member Raul Grijalva (AZ-07) who has led the Committee for the last decade as the first Latino Chair, and who endorsed Rep. United States and Idaho v. United States, two consolidated cases concerning the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) under consideration by the en banc Ninth Circuit. EMTALA is a federal law that requires hospitals that receive Medicare funding to provide necessary “stabilizing treatment” to patients experiencing medical emergencies, which includes abortion care. After the Dobbs decision in 2022, an anti-abortion law in Idaho went into effect, making it a felony for a doctor to terminate a patient’s pregnancy unless it is “necessary” to prevent the patient’s death. The United States sued the State of Idaho, arguing that the state’s law is preempted by existing federal law in those circumstances in which abortion may not be necessary to prevent imminent death, but still constitutes the “necessary stabilizing treatment” for a patient’s emergency medical condition. The district court agreed; it held that in those limited, but critically important situations, EMTALA requires Medicare-participating hospitals to provide abortion as an emergency medical treatment. Idaho Republicans appealed that ruling to the Supreme Court. In March, 258 lawmakers, including the N.M. Congressional Delegation, filed an amicus brief, asking the Supreme Court to affirm the district court decision. In June, the Supreme Court dismissed the case but without a ruling on the merits, sending the case back to the Ninth Circuit Court and reinstating the district court’s injunction. In their brief in support of the Justice Department, the lawmakers state “he 99th Congress passed EMTALA to ensure that every person who visits a Medicare-funded hospital with an ‘emergency medical condition’ is offered stabilizing treatment.” The lawmakers contin… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:57:20Z

This letter comes amidst a recent wave of worker organizing activity at Amazon locations around the county, and, to ensure that workers’ rights are respected going forward, the Members requested information from the company and asked if it will commit to following applicable federal and state labor laws. Additionally, USDA will allow farmers to participate in multiple conservation programs simultaneously, such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), without the penalty of losing eligibility. This change will help farmers tackle critical issues like invasive species and erosion while enhancing wildlife habitats. The conversation highlighted the essential role immigrant workers play in New Mexico’s economy, particularly in industries like health care, agriculture, education and energy. The event featured leaders from the Center for Civic Policy, The Semilla Project, OLÉ and Organized Power in Numbers. “New Mexico’s economy depends on immigrant workers, whether it’s the farmworkers in Deming, the health care professionals in Albuquerque, or the teachers shaping the future of our state. If we want New Mexico to thrive, we need policies that reflect the realities of our workforce,” said Vasquez. “In Congress, I am committed to finding common sense solutions to meet the moment and create more opportunities for our communities.” Vasquez emphasized his Strengthening Our Workforce Act, a bill that would create a pathway for immigrants working in essential industries to remain in the U.S. legally. In addition to workforce challenges, the discussion touched on humane immigration policies. Vasquez also spoke about his Humane Accountability Act, which would hold detention centers accountable and ensure that families seeking asylum are treated with dignity. Outdoor equity was also a prominent theme in the discussion. Vasquez strongly believes that everyone deserves access to the outdoors. Throughout his career in public service, Vasquez has led efforts to protect our lands, water and wildlife. That’s why, before serving in Congress, he created the nation’s first Outdoor Equity Fund, a program that is getting more Latinos outdoors all across New Mexico. “After our enlightening discussion during the ‘Building Pathways’ event, it’s clear that our collaboration with leaders like Congressman Vasquez and Representative Small is pivotal,” said Jared Berenice Estrada, Advocacy & Programs Director at The Semilla Pr… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:57:20Z

The event brought together constituents who have directly benefited from his office’s assistance with federal agencies as well as local leaders whose projects have received significant federal support through Community Project Funding (CPF). Since taking office, Vasquez has returned over $1 million to constituents, successfully resolving over 1,200 cases involving IRS disputes, Social Security benefits and VA assistance for veterans. Several constituents shared their stories of how Vasquez helped them overcome obstacles when dealing with federal agencies. “I’m excited to announce that my office has returned over $1 million to hard-working New Mexicans,” said Vasquez. “My office has helped seniors access hard-earned Social Security benefits, resolved IRS issues for families and helped countless veterans. I’m here to fight for everyone in southern New Mexico. Every success story shows the real impact we can have when we prioritize people over politics and ensure the federal government works for them.” “My husband was a Vietnam veteran. The new facility in Chaparral represents a critical investment in the region’s efforts to combat food insecurity and ensure no family goes hungry. Vasquez also announced that he helped secure $300,000 in federal funding for Casa de Peregrinos to build a new food pantry in Hatch, which will extend food access to some of New Mexico’s most rural communities. He highlighted the ongoing need for federal programs like SNAP and WIC, noting that nearly one in four households in southern New Mexico relies on SNAP. These jobs are leading the way to securing our domestic energy supply and harnessing the power of our natural resources. Array’s new facility in my district will employ over 300 New Mexicans, powering the growth of the West Mesa,” said Vasquez. “Array’s expansion is expected to inject over $300 million into the local economy over the next decade. This is the kind of economic impact that strengthens our district and keeps families here in New Mexico.” During the roundtable, they discussed plans for the new production facility in the district and how these investments will bring more good-paying jobs to the area. Array Technologies, an Albuquerque-based global leader in solar tracking systems, recently broke ground on a new production facility on Albuquerque’s West Side. The IRA is a game changer for renewable energy. The 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Tax Credit is directly supporting the growth of solar manufacturing at Array. This credit incentivizes domestic production, which means more investments in local workforces and supply chains. These efforts, along with the strategic investments in solar manufacturing, are part of Vasquez’s broader commitment to ensuring New Mexico remains a hub for renewable energy innovation. Once fully operational, Array’s new facility will increase production of solar tracker systems, key elements of utility-scale solar installations. Thanks to the domestic content bonus credit from the IRA, Array is on track to offer 100 percent U.S.-made solar trackers by 2025, strengthening local supply chains and creating more opportunities. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:57:20Z

"The devastating impact of the fentanyl crisis is deeply personal for me. Sadly, like millions of Americans, this epidemic has touched my life with the death of a close friend," said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01). "Drug traffickers and suppliers adapt quickly, and so should we. Our focus must remain on criminals who pour fentanyl into our streets through tablets and counterfeit pills. Regulating pill presses stops this process at the start - another step in protecting Americans." Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has identified the need to deny illicit synthetic drug producers' access to pill presses, die molds, encapsulating machines, and other counterfeit pill manufacturing materials. Tablets and counterfeit pills containing fentanyl have become more common, and people who consume them may not know that they include fentanyl or other dangerous substances. Congresswoman Stansbury’s legislation targets the production of these fake pills by requiring those who manufacture or distribute pill tableting or encapsulating machines and their critical parts to “serialize” their machinery, keep records of all relevant transactions, and report those transactions to the Attorney General by creating a national registry to track the movement of these pill tableting or encapsulating machines and their critical parts in the stream of commerce. Stansbury S001218 stansbury.house.gov stansbury https://stansbury.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) introduced the San Felipe Pueblo Land into Trust bill, 37 years after the land was designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern back in 1987. First introduced by then-Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham in the 115th Congress, again by then-Congresswoman Deb Haaland in the 116th Congress, and now co-sponsored by Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez (N.M.-03) in the 118th, this bill would direct the Secretary of the Interior to convey the area currently known as the Ball Ranch Area of Critical Environmental Concern in New Mexico, into trust for the benefit of San Felipe Pueblo. “Indigenous peoples have been stewards of the land since time immemorial,” said Rep. Stansbury (NM-01). “But time and time again, they have been forced from their homes and the land that holds sacred meaning to them. For the people of San Felipe Pueblo, the area currently known as Ball Ranch holds a deep cultural and religious significance because of the many irreplaceable cultural resources found there. That’s why I’ve introduced this legislation: because Indigenous people deserve to keep and protect the land they’ve lived on for thousands of years free from pollution and destruction.” “This legislation is the culmination of more than a decade of work, spanning several Congresses, to transfer this land into trust,” said San Felipe Pueblo Governor Anthony Ortiz. “It is a recognition that, working with the BLM, the Pueblo of San Felipe is the best possible steward of this land. This is our aboriginal homeland, surrounded by the Pueblo, and is sacred to all area Pueblos. The Pueblo of San Felipe is very grateful to Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury who is leading this effort here in Washington. She and her staff have gone above and beyond to make this bill a reality and she has demonstrated her strong commitment to Tribal Sovereignty and respect for the federal government to government relationship.” “This bill highlights the importance of everyone working… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

The bill passed as part of the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act. Prior to passage, Vasquez spoke on the House Floor about the importance of his bill to New Mexico. WATCH: Vasquez Delivers Remarks on the House Floor “We need to use every tool in our toolbox to lessen the frequency and severity of wildfires. Livestock grazing can help us accomplish that goal. Grazing targeted areas can help slow the spread of an intense burn and control the temperature of a fire by reducing the amount of flammable organic fuel,” saidVasquez. “In New Mexico, we know the cost of fighting wildfires is astronomical, so we must use every available resource to prevent future natural disasters.” Vasquez is committed to preventing and reducing wildfires that threaten New Mexican’s homes, land and livelihoods. The recent South Fork and Salt Fires, which tragically took the lives of three New Mexicans and destroyed hundreds of homes and tens of thousands of acres, underscores the importance of using every option available to prevent dangerous wildfires. This bill ensures that grazing can be used proactively to mitigate wildfires and keep New Mexicans safe. It helps cut through red tape and makes it easier for New Mexican farmers and ranchers to assist in preventing wildfires that could devastate their land and livelihood. Vasquez voted in support of the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act today, which improves local capacity to address wildfire impacts by allowing different agencies to work together to tackle wildfire risks. In a letter to Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, Vasquez urged the Air Force to reconsider moving forward with plans to expand the Military Operations Area (MOA) in Southwest New Mexico. “Over the past month, I have heard from countless constituents who have expressed serious concerns about the impacts these new flights will have on their lives,” said Vasquez in the letter. “The Gila Wilderness is our nation’s first wilderness area and is known for its pristine landscapes and vast variety of wildlife and plants. The expansion of low-flight military operations poses serious threats to the integrity of this special environment.” Vasquez highlighted the potential economic damage, with increased noise pollution from supersonic flights as low as 5,000 feet likely deterring tourism and disrupting outdoor recreational activities, critical drivers for local businesses. Vasquez’s letter echoes the concerns his staff heard in a local meeting in Animas, where hundreds of New Mexicans voiced their opposition to the expansion, citing similar concerns. He also raised concerns about the potential environmental hazards associated with the use of chaffs and flares, which pose a wildfire risk and may contain harmful chemicals like PFAS, known to persist in the environment and potentially harm human and ecological health. Counties across New Mexico have opposed the expansion, with Grant, Catron and Hidalgo counties passing resolutions opposing the proposal. In the letter to House and Senate leadership signed by 21 Committee members, Vasquez emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive Farm Bill that protects vital nutrition programs and strengthens support for the agricultural industry in New Mexico and across the country. “Families and farmers across New Mexico and the nation have been clear—they need stability and leadership, not delays and partisan political bickering. A strong agricultural sector is necessary for our nation’s food security and national security. House Agriculture Committee leaders need to act now to deliver a bipartisan Farm Bill,” said Vasquez. “I come from an agriculture community, a family of ranchers, and I’ve spent my entire term working on bipartisan solutions to fund traditional Farm Bill programs. Vasquez emphasized his commitment to standing up for a woman’s right to choose and ensuring equitable health care in New Mexico. “Today’s groundbreaking is a testament to our determination to ensure reproductive health care is accessible to everyone. This Center will save lives, defend reproductive freedom and ensure those seeking reproductive health care services in Southern New Mexico are treated with dignity and care.” said Vasquez. “We can all agree that this is not a place for government interference. These are personal decisions between patients seeking reproductive health care, their doctors, their faith and their families.” The Center is a collaboration between UNM Health, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, Bold Futures and Strong Families. Vasquez was joined by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, health care practitioners and community advocates. The new Center for Reproductive Health will provide abortions, miscarriage management, contraception options, pregnancy loss support, women’s preventative care, adoption education and resources and limited primary care for health screenings and cancer prevention. Vasquez is championing the Women’s Health Protection Act in Congress, which would protect the right to access reproductive health care across the country. He has also led the Access to Family Building Act, which would protect New Mexicans’ right to use fertility options, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). During his remarks, Vasquez also talked about New Mexico’s high maternal mortality rate and the existing disparities. He emphasized the importance of equitable health care and how the new Center will support New Mexico’s underserved communities. Vasquez was also joined by the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, the Center for Civic Policy, New Mexico Legal Aid and Casa de Salud. During the meeting, Rep. Vasquez highlighted his Patient Debt Relief Act, which would provide relief and protections to millions of Americans burdened by medical debt. The bill establishes a grant program allowing non-profit organizations to purchase medical debt from hospitals and codifies critical patient protections. “Suffering from a medical emergency should not mean putting your home or family’s future at risk – but too often, New Mexicans are faced with significant medical debt that threatens their financial stability. My bill will protect patients and ensure that debt collectors cannot foreclose on homes simply because of medical debt,” said Vasquez. “The Patient Debt Relief Act will provide relief to those suffering from medical debt while ensuring long-term protections for patients in New Mexico and across the country.” The discussion with New Mexico seniors and local advocacy organizations underscored the urgency of addressing the medical debt crisis, which disproportionately impacts Hispanic families. “We know that thousands of patients across New Mexico, and more across the country, are being sued for unpaid medical bills — having their wages garnished, liens placed on their homes and their credit ruined — all while hospitals benefit from public funds,” said Arika E. Sánchez, Healthcare Attorney at the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty. “We commend and support Rep. The Real Time Crime Center provides information to officers in the field to enhance the Albuquerque Police Department’s situational awareness and decision-making. This year, Vasquez requested $1,184,000 in Community Project Funding for the upgrades to the Center to help keep Albuquerque safe. “Our budget is a statement of our values, that’s why I’m working with local leaders and partners to bring home much-needed federal investments,” said Vasquez. “I’m proud to fight to secure nearly $1.2 million in Community Project Funding for Albuquerque Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center. I recently visited the Center and was impressed by their innovative ways to keep our communities safe. I’m in office to serve New Mexicans and that means assisting in getting the necessary funding for our state to thrive.” Vasquez is committed to public safety throughout the district. Vasquez leads the Auto Theft Prevention Act in Congress, which addresses the alarming rise in vehicle thefts across New Mexico and the country. Albuquerque consistently ranks among the top cities in car theft rates. This bill proposes targeted federal funding to support state and local law enforcement agencies in combating auto thefts. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

The bill provides teachers and staff at Tribally-controlled schools with the same federal retirement benefits as their counterparts at Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools. “Our educators in Tribal schools work tirelessly to shape the future of their communities,” said Vasquez. “My bill ensures Tribal educators receive the retirement benefits they deserve, fulfilling our trust responsibility to Tribal Nations and helping to retain the dedicated teachers our students need. I’m committed to working with Laguna and all Tribal communities to pass this bill into law and ensure that every Tribal school has the resources they need to nurture successful students.” Educators from Laguna, Acoma, Ramah Navajo Chapter, To'Hajiillee Navajo Chapter and the Dine Bi Olta School Board Association joined Vasquez. During the discussion, Vasquez emphasized the importance of dialogue and action. Last year, after hearing from the Ramah Navajo School Board and other New Mexico Pueblos about how lack of retirement benefits made it hard to recruit teachers at Tribally-operated schools, Vasquez introduced this bill to fix it. Vasquez also shared an important update on the bill. This letter comes on the heels of complaints from Tribal communities about late deliveries, spoiled food and shipments not arriving at all. “The FDPIR delays have had real impacts on my district,” wrote Vasquez in the letter. “FDPIR is a lifeline for my constituents and these delays left more than one hundred families struggling to put food on the table. I am calling on USDA to investigate these matters and promptly implement corrective measures to ensure that food deliveries are timely and meet the highest quality standards.” Vasquez’s letter calls on the USDA to address these delivery issues, work with Acoma and Zuni Pueblos to ensure they are compensated for their losses and conduct robust Tribal consultation to make sure FDPIR is working for New Mexico’s Tribes and Pueblos. This program is critical to the well-being of many Tribal Nations in New Mexico, providing nutritious food to Tribal members. Tribes in New Mexico experience higher rates of hunger and poverty and often are located in remote areas without grocery stores. Earlier this year, Vasquez introduced the Tribal Nutrition Sovereignty Act, a new bill aimed at expanding access to the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) for Tribal communities. The CSFP provides low-income seniors with essential food to ensure they receive their daily nutrients. This bill was included in the House-version of the Farm Bill. Currently, Tribal communities lack direct access to the CSFP, creating barriers for low-income seniors. The Tribal Nutrition Sovereignty Act will address this issue by making it easier for Tribes and Pueblos to benefit from the program, granting them greater sovereignty in their food options. The fact that Alamogordo veterans must seek medical services at the Albuquerque VA facility when El Paso is exponentially closer, is an example of government bureaucracy at its worst. That’s why I introduced the New Mexico Rural Veteran Health Care Access Actto directly address this problem and make it easier for our nation’s heroes to access the care they need,” said Vasquez. “Long before I held this position, I’ve been showing up and listening to our rural veterans. I will continue to fight to ensure our veterans get the care they deserve closer to home.” Earlier this summer in Alamogordo, Vasquez sat down with veteran leaders from the Lincoln Otero County Veteran Leadership Council to discuss the continuing difficulties veterans face in accessing timely, affordable, and accessible health care from Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities. Veterans in Otero and Eddy Counties only receive reimbursement for traveling to their assigned VA facility in Albuquerque, almost four hours away, despite El Paso being significantly closer and more accessible. Vasquez committed to working on a solution to permanently include Otero County veterans within the Veterans Integrated Services Network (VISN) lines that would give them access to the El Paso VA hospital–ensuring New Mexico’s rural veterans have access to their closest VA. In response to these ongoing issues, Congressman Vasquez has introduced the New Mexico Rural Veteran Health Care Access Act. In a letter to House leadership, they emphasized the urgent need for federal disaster relief funding to support New Mexico communities affected by recent natural disasters. “As Representatives from the state of New Mexico, we have seen firsthand how natural disasters have affected our state. Federal disaster relief funding has been crucial to helping our communities recover and rebuild, but we must act now to restore New Mexico’s trust in the federal government,” Reps. Vasquez, Stansbury and Leger Fernández wrote in the letter. FEMA’s DRF is vital for New Mexico’s recovery efforts following natural disasters. Recently, the Salt Fire and South Fork Fire devastated more than 25,000 acres across the Mescalero Apache Reservation and the Ruidoso area. Over 2,600 New Mexicans have sought federal disaster assistance, with FEMA approving more than $3.85 million in housing and rental assistance to date. Additionally, storm and flooding events in Rio Arriba, San Juan and San Miguel Counties have caused extensive damage to homes, farms, roads, and other infrastructure. The Department of Homeland Security projects a $6.6 billion deficit in the DRF by September 30, jeopardizing the ability of disaster-stricken communities to recover. Despite the Administration’s request last fall for $9 billion in supplemental funding for the DRF, Congress has yet to appropriate these funds. As wildfires continue to spread across the West, the need for this funding is more critical than ever. The New Mexico House Delegation emphasized the importance of immediate action to ensure FEMA can continue its essential work in aiding communities across New Mexico and the nation. The bill takes a fresh approach by establishing a grant program that enables non-profit organizations to purchase debt from hospitals while codifying protections for patients. Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus announced their support for the bill. “Suffering from a medical emergency should not mean putting your home or family’s future at risk – but too often, New Mexicans are faced with significant medical debt that threatens their financial stability. My bill will protect patients and ensure that debt collectors cannot foreclosure on homes simply because of medical debt,” said Congressman Vasquez. “The Patient Debt Relief Act will provide relief to those suffering from medical debt while ensuring long-term protections for patients in New Mexico and across the country.” Over 100 million Americans are currently struggling with medical debt, which disproportionately affects Black and Hispanic families. A troubling 64 percent of Hispanic adults have had medical debt in the past five years. The Patient Debt Relief Act prevents creditors from foreclosing on a home or seizing wages due to unpaid medical bills. By cracking down on predatory debt collection practices and allowing non-profits to provide debt relief, Vasquez is ensuring that people are able to focus on their recovery, instead of their debt. “Patients should be able to focus on their recovery, not whether they’ll lose their home or have their wages seized due to medical debt,” said Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.). “The Patient Debt Relief Act is about protecting patients and providing peace of mind to hardworking Americans. I am proud to serve this district in Congress and celebrate all the hard work done we see each day." First Nations Community HealthSource received $1 million in FY23 for behavioral health expansions, and the Albuquerque Adult Learning Center received $600,000 in FY23 for their newest program, the Solar Integrated Education & Training Program. The Congresswoman has been a champion for increasing access to education for all New Mexicans. Earlier this year, Rep. Stansbury and Sen. Martin Heinrich co-lead the Postsecondary Student Success Act of 2024 that will award colleges and universities with the funds for a variety of evidence-based practices that support student retention, completion, and success. She also co-sponsored the College for All Act of 2023 that expands access to higher education through eliminating tuition and required fees for eligible students, revising the Federal Pell Grant program, and reauthorizing certain programs to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds. "We are incredibly grateful to Congresswoman Stansbury for supporting us in our mission to empower adults through education," said Gloria Rael, Executive Director for Albuquerque Adult Learning Center. "Each year, our programs are life-changing for our students, setting them up for brighter futures and greater career success. Mark Takano (Calif.-39), hosted a roundtable discussion with local veterans to ensure their voices are heard in Washington. Participants voiced their concerns regarding health care costs, Veterans Affairs (VA) accessibility and the PACT Act that supports veterans affected by toxic exposures while serving overseas. “Veterans are always deserving of our support and attention, which is why I brought the House Veteran Affairs Ranking Member to New Mexico to listen directly about the challenges our veterans face,” said Vasquez. “We discussed issues related to quality or care, rural transportation, access to the PACT Act, and new legislation I’m proposing to change the boundaries of our VA care system to better serve veterans living in our rural communities.” “Thank you to Rep. Vasquez for hosting me and the committee in New Mexico. It was great to meet with Native American veterans in Rep. Vasquez's district and hear about the issues facing the veterans in his community. Rural veterans deserve equal access to care and I will keep working with Rep. Vasquez to ensure equal access and quality care is delivered to every veteran in America,” said Ranking Member Mark Takano. Before the roundtable, Vasquez toured the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center with Reps. Mark Takano and Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01). One of the most pressing issues discussed at the roundtable was the difficulty rural veterans face in accessing reliable, quality health care providers. Vasquez introduced the bipartisan Veteran Medical Exams for Distant Areas Act (VET MEDS) to ensure that rural veterans have continued access to certified health care providers. In Otero County specifically, veterans are struggling to attend required medical appointments and receive little to no money for mileage reimbursement when traveling to El Paso and Las Cruces, despite the fact that those locations are closer … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T18:32:29Z

These initiatives reflect his commitment to fostering community engagement, preserving cultural heritage and promoting the well-being of young people and families in New Mexico. “Preserving our cultural heritage and empowering our youth to be stewards of our environment is work I’ve taken on for many years,” said Vasquez. “There is so much to be learned outside the classroom. I’m committed to working alongside organizations such as the Center for Sustainable Systems, Story Riders and PB&J Family Services, which create opportunities for our young people to learn, grow and receive the support they need.” On a walk through community waterways in Albuquerque, Vasquez and leaders of the Center for Sustainable Systems (CESSOS) discussed and explored the importance of water, agriculture and acequias. Acequias are a key part of New Mexico’s heritage and irrigation practices and have been a staple of the agricultural landscape for centuries. Vasquez also spoke about cycling safety with students with Story Riders, a program that empowers children and youth of color to connect with nature and their cultural heritage through guided cycling experiences. “The opportunity we had today with Congressman Vasquez is very important to our community. The grave need of the future is going to be water, and unless we start teaching our kids today about water, and our water systems, we’re going to be in a lot of trouble,” said Jorge Garcia, Director of the Center for Social Sustainable Systems. “The fact that Congressman Vasquez was here this morning is a testament to his involvement with the community. It shows that he’s interested in coming into our places where we congregate and responding to our kids. It’s phenomenal to have not only a role model like him, who looks like us, but also someone who can really, genuinely come in to be with your community.” “The lack of bic… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T18:32:29Z

This expansion and modernization will transform our space technologies and manufacturing,” said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01). “Rocket Lab is one of only two companies in the United States specializing in producing highly efficient and radiation-resistant compound semiconductors. I am delighted to have their work represent our great state.” Rocket Lab was awarded $23.9 million so the company can produce compound semiconductors for satellites and spacecraft. The expansion would also increase Rocket Lab’s compound semiconductor production by 50% and help meet the growing national security and commercial demand for these solar cells in the United States. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR-05) and Eric Sorensen (D-IL-17). This bill would provide increased funding, technology and staffing for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in order to keep our communities safe and combat the growing fentanyl crisis. “It’s time to stop talking about detaining fentanyl at our ports of entry and time to start doing something about it. Millions of Americans and their families are begging Congress for relief and now is the time to act. I’m proud to work with my Republican and Democratic colleagues, Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer and Congressman Sorensen, on this common sense solution to help end this national crisis,” said Vasquez. “I’ve met with countless Customs and Border Patrol agents and have seen detection investments in inspection technology work right here on our New Mexico borders. Our bill provides funding to support more officers and technology to stop the deadly influx of this drug into our communities. The Stop Fentanyl at the Border Act should be brought up for a House vote as expediently as possible.” “Oregon had the highest rate of fentanyl overdose deaths in the nation last year, and Portland police have already seized more fentanyl-laced pills and powder this year than in all of 2023 combined. During recent meetings with local law enforcement, police officers acknowledged that our southern border is a first line of defense against these dangerous and deadly substances,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “I’m honored to co-lead the bipartisan and bicameral Stop Fentanyl at the Border Act to ensure border agents have the funding needed to staff up and deploy more detection technology to protect our communities.” “I have said from day one that we need to secure our southern border. And it is critical that we stop the flow of illegal drugs like fentanyl that are hurting American families. When I visited the southern border… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:24:45Z

Gabe Vasquez Votes Against Anti-Voter Bill to Protect Voter Access 2024-07-10 2024 2024-07 Democrat House NM Gabe Vasquez V000136 vasquez.house.gov vasquez https://vasquez.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (N.M.-02) voted against H.R. 8281, the SAVE Act, to protect voter access and prevent disenfranchising voters. This bill would pose significant challenges to voter registration and participation for millions of citizens. Americans would not be able to register to vote with commonly accepted forms of identification, such as their driver's license or REAL IDs, as they do not meet the SAVE Act’s citizenship requirements. This also means that military IDs, Tribal IDs and even birth certificates in the case of name changes after marriage cannot be used for voter registration. This is an unnecessary barrier that disproportionately affects women, servicemembers and Native Americans. “Voting is our most sacred right, and we must do everything in our power to ensure that it is protected and accessible to all citizens. This bill, under the guise of safeguarding our electoral process, would disenfranchise millions of Americans, including servicemembers, Native Americans, women and rural communities,” said Rep. Gabe Vasquez. “We have laws to protect election integrity and prevent non-citizens from voting in federal elections. The SAVE Act does not ensure election security, instead it creates significant barriers to voter registration and participation. By voting against this bill, I am standing up for the rights of New Mexicans and all Americans to have their voices heard without unnecessary and discriminatory hurdles.” “As a disabled combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, I fought for the freedoms and rights that our democracy promises to every citizen. If Americans regard service members as our finest citizens, then why are Republicans making service members prove their citizenship? The Republican led Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, institutes voter ID requirements that create significant barriers for marginalized communities, including minorities, the elderly, and low-income individuals,” said Nick Paz, New Mexi… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:24:45Z

Stansbury Releases Statement after Supreme Court Hands Down Three Critical Decisions, Including Chevron Deference Decision 2024-07-01 2024 2024-07 Democrat House NM Melanie A. Stansbury S001218 stansbury.house.gov stansbury https://stansbury.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court handed down decisions on three critical cases involving Administrative Law, prosecutions of January 6 Insurrection cases, and protections for vulnerable and unhoused individuals. "Once again, the extremism of Trump’s Supreme Court supermajority is on full display in today’s decisions handed down by the Court," said Rep. Stansbury. "Taken together, these three decisions gut decades of legal precedent protecting our environment and public health, will undermine the prosecution of hundreds of Jan. 6 cases of individuals involved in the insurrection, and will leave our nation’s most vulnerable and unhoused without protection. As a science professional who has spent my career working to address our nation’s water and climate challenges, it is shocking to watch as the Supreme Court has sought to legislate from the bench without regard for science, the established rule of law, and concern for the basic well-being our communities and environment. This Supreme Court has sought to expand its power far beyond what the Founding Fathers ever could have imagined, undermining our nation’s most basic checks and balances in the name of advancing an extremist conservative agenda. 40-years of legal precedent has been overturned with today’s decisions in the Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo case and countless public health, safety, and environmental protections are now threatened. Cases like this are exactly why we need to reform the Court and hold our Justices accountable—and why I introduced the Judicial Ethics Enforcement Act and am a co-sponsor of the Supreme Court Ethics Recusal and Transparency Act and High Court Gift Ban. The full scope of these disastrous decisions will be seen in the upcoming months, but the Supreme Court is tightening its grip on the everyday lives of the American people with devastating consequences for the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the medicin… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:24:45Z

Stansbury S001218 stansbury.house.gov stansbury https://stansbury.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) released the following statement today after the conservative justices of the United State’s Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in the 6-3 ruling in former President Donald Trump’s immunity case: "Nothing is more perilous to the future of our democracy than unchecked power. Frighteningly, that is what the conservative majority on the Supreme Court appears to be poised to give Donald Trump today in their Presidential immunity ruling. The Court delayed this decision to the absolute final day of their session, effectively stalling Trump’s prosecution before the 2024 election," said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01). "No one is above the law. Not a former President, and certainly not the Justices bending the law to meet their political ends. Donald Trump is a convicted felon and serial abuser of Presidential power—who used his office for personal and political gain--and will do the same if elected again, with frightening implications for our democracy. "In the history of our country, we have never seen a more extreme and political court—conflicted by conservative candidates, donors, and activists. Justice Thomas and Justice Alito should have recused themselves long ago from this and other cases, as it is clear their political activities and those of their spouses and family members violate the most basic tenets of judicial ethics. "It is now more clear than ever, that oversight of the Supreme Court is necessary to preserve its integrity and restore Americans’ trust in the highest court in the land, which is why I have introduced and cosponsored legislation to reform and overhaul oversight over the Court. We must reform the Court. And we must ensure Trump is held accountable under the law." Rep. Stansbury is a champion for judicial ethics reform. She filed the Judicial Ethics Enforcement Act earlier this year and is sending a letter to House Republican leadership urging them to take legislative action to protect the country from this activist court. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:24:45Z

Reps. Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), and Joe Neguse (CO-02) joined as co-leads and 60 other members of Congress signed the letter. “Extreme heat is a growing environmental justice issue,” the lawmakers said. “Heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States and wildfire seasons are starting earlier and ending later. As extreme heat and wildfire smoke continue to plague our communities, we urge FEMA to be more responsive to communities’ evolving needs in the face of the climate crisis.” Across the country, areas with higher rates of poverty experience temperatures as much as 7°F warmer during the summer months when compared with wealthier neighborhoods. Studies also show that historically redlined neighborhoods are on average at least 5°F hotter than non-redlined neighborhoods, with some as much as 13°F hotter FEMA has previously denied requests for extreme heat and related declarations as recently as 2022, finding that the damage from these events “was not of such severity and magnitude” to warrant a major disaster declaration. “We appreciate FEMA’s partnership on this emerging threat to the safety and wellbeing of communities across the United States,” the lawmakers continued. “We look forward to working with the agency to ensure it is using all appropriate and available resources to address the impacts of extreme heat and wildfire smoke.” In the letter, the lawmakers urge the agency to consider ongoing or anticipated public health impacts alongside FEMA’s more conventional parameters, such as the costs of damage done to physical infrastructure, when considering a disaster declaration and issue guidance explicitly related to extreme heat and wildfire smoke and publish this guidance in FEMA’s forthcoming r… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:24:45Z

The delegation urged DOT to prioritize connecting Albuquerque, which currently does not have nonstop service to either of the Washington-area airports, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) andWashington Dulles International Airport (IAD). As the largest city without nonstop service to the nation’s capital, Vasquez is ensuring that New Mexico is not left behind. “This lack of direct connection cuts off significant economic opportunity and tourism for Albuquerque and the entire state of New Mexico,” Vasquez said in the letter. “The lack of direct connection not only affects our New Mexican constituents and businesses, but also the nation’s national security mission and federal government operations - thousands of federal employees at National Labs and regional agency offices in New Mexico do not have straightforward access to our nation’s capital via direct ABQ service to either IAD or DCA.” “It is a priority for the Sunport to provide all New Mexicans more direct access to our nation’s capital and connect them to opportunities in the area,” saidCity of Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller. “We’re grateful to our congressional delegation for recognizing the urgency of connecting our communities, and petitioning for nonstop service.
