| https://jordan.house.gov/media/press-releases/jordan-lauds-new-developments-179th-airlift-wing | Jordan Lauds New Developments at 179th Airlift Wing | 2009-11-30 | 2009 | 2009-11 | Republican | House | OH | Jim Jordan | J000289 | jordan.house.gov | jordan | https://jordan.house.gov/media/press-releases | scraper | November 30, 2009 Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) praised today's announcement that the Ohio Air National Guard's 179th Airlift Wing, based at Mansfield Lahm Airport, should see the arrival of its new airlift mission by September. Jordan was on hand at the 179th for a visit by General Raymond E. Johns, Jr., the newly appointed Commander of the Air Force's Air Mobility Command. General Johns assumed his command on November 20. "We're honored to host General Johns at the 179th so early in his tenure at Air Mobility Command," Jordan said. "It's a tribute to the dedication of Mansfield's Guardsmen that General Johns made the 179th Airlift Wing one of the first visits of his new command." Air Mobility Command, based at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, was created in 1992 to undertake worldwide airlift and aerial refueling missions for all branches of the armed forces. As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round, the 179th is slated to lose all of its C-130 cargo aircraft by August of 2010. Since that announcement, Ohio National Guard leaders have promoted Mansfield as the ideal basing location for the new C-27J Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA). Aircrews from the 179th have already begun training on the new airframe at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. The Pentagon announced earlier this month that the 179th would be the first of six Air National Guard units to receive the new plane. Colonel Mark Stephens, Commander of the 179th, confirmed today that he expects the first of these aircraft to be delivered to Mansfield by September. "I applaud Ohio's Adjutant General, Major General Gregory Wayt, and Colonel Stephens and his team for their perseverance and foresight throughout the uncertainites of recent years," Jordan said. "It's because of their commitment that the 179th, which was slated for closure just four years ago, will be the first to receive this vital new mission." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:19Z |

| https://jordan.house.gov/media/press-releases/jordan-statement-narrow-passage-democrat-healthcare-bill | Jordan Statement on Narrow Passage of Democrat Healthcare Bill | 2009-11-07 | 2009 | 2009-11 | Republican | House | OH | Jim Jordan | J000289 | jordan.house.gov | jordan | https://jordan.house.gov/media/press-releases | scraper | November 7, 2009 Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) made the following statement on the narrow passage of H.R. 3962, the trillion-dollar government takeover of healthcare that passed 220 to 215 with 39 Democrats joining all but one Republican in voting no. "During this healthcare debate, millions of everyday Americans called their Congressmen, spoke at town hall meetings, or marched on Washington to express their outrage over the prospect of turning their health care over to the federal government. Unfortunately, congressional Democrats ignored their voices and passed their trillion-dollar, 2,000-page government takeover bill in the dark of night. "Democrat leaders only allowed 2 of the 216 submitted amendments to be debated and receive a vote. I am certain that the American people expect ideas from both parties to be considered, especially in such comprehensive legislation as this. Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats cannot be proud of the process by which they passed this bill." "I joined 175 of my colleagues in supporting a common sense alternative health care reform bill that reduced costs, protected the relationship between patients and doctors, and did not raise taxes on families or businesses. Though our plan did not pass, I still believe these long-term fixes we propose are needed to fix what is wrong with the health care system." "I was pleased to support a pro-life amendment to the health care bill that honored the fundamental truths that life is sacred, life should be protected, and taxpayer money should never be used to take the life of an unborn child." "People in our district are talking about jobs, but in Washington D.C., Democrat leaders seem focused on passing job-killing legislation like cap-and-trade and this federal takeover of health care. Unemployment is at a near 30-year high, and I will continue working to refocus the priorities of Democrat leaders in Congress on stopping the uncontrolled federal spending and beginning to work on turning this economy around to create jobs again." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:19Z |

"The number one issue in our part of Ohio is jobs, but as unemployment rises to a 26-year high, the White House and leaders in Congress are still focused on passing job-killing programs like cap-and-trade and a federal takeover of health care," said Jordan. Jordan pointed to a February 17, 2009 White House document* projecting that federal stimulus spending would create 7,200 jobs in the 4th Congressional District of Ohio. As of October 30th, according to an Obama Administration website**, the nearly $150 million of stimulus money spent in the district since February has "created or saved" just 205 jobs. "Even according to their own rosy numbers, the Obama Administration admits to spending over $720,000 on each job they claim to have created or saved," Jordan said. "This stimulus bill has been a colossal failure, and the money we are borrowing to finance it will take generations to pay back." "We need to end this out-of-control federal spending and turn our focus towards fiscal responsibility and job creation," Jordan added. "Over 80 of my colleagues have joined me in cosponsoring a bill called the REBOUND Act (H.R. 3140) that would halt the stimulus and bailout spending so we can do just that." ### *February 17, 2009 document projecting stimulus job creation per district. **Jobs created/saved by stimulus (click on "funding" in upper right corner, and select "by congressional district") | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:19Z |

"Americans want real health care reform that will cut costs while protecting access to their doctor. They don't want a government takeover of the health care system that will raise taxes, ration care and put bureaucrats in charge of important medical decisions." "The liberal leadership in Congress might think they have the votes to ram this bill through the House, but the American people won't just sit there and take it. Congress needs to get focused on job creation and real health care reform. That's what I'm fighting for in Washington." ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:16Z |

Jim Jordan (R-OH) have sent a letter to Committee Chairman Eldophus Towns (D-MD) and Subcommittee Chairman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) for controversial Obama appointee Kevin Jennings to appear before the Committee. Among the many questionable activities he engaged in prior to being named Safe Schools Czar, Jennings conducted a seminar containing graphic and disturbing sexually explicit information for 12 year-old schoolchildren while serving as executive director of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, as well as an incident in which he failed to report a 15 year-old student's sexual abuse from an older man. "The vetting undertaken by this Administration during its hiring processes, as well as the standards it imposes, appear inadequate. In some cases, individuals have displayed troubling behavior that renders them unfit to serve the American people. This is especially true for Mr. Jennings," wrote Issa and Jordan. Jennings, who once declared "We have to quit being afraid of the religious right….I don't care what they think! Drop dead!" in a 2000 speech, wrote about his past illegal drug abuse in his memoir, expressing no regret for his action or words of caution to young people. Issa and Jordan wrote, "Mr. Jennings' past behavior calls into question not only his fitness to serve the American people, but also the Administration's vetting procedures and standards for his employment. If non-confirmed czars are not required to appear before a Senate confirmation panel, then they should, at the very least, appear before this Committee to justify their behavior to the American people." There is no more important issue to the economic future of our country, so I will continue making the case that the federal government should tighten its belt instead of always asking the American people to do so." Jordan's plan would have saved taxpayers $84 billion just by holding the line on non-defense spending to 2008 levels. The amendment was defeated on a party-line vote in House Rules Committee. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:14Z |

"This bill is a victory for our men and women in uniform—as well as the workers at JSMC who provide the military with the equipment it needs to defend our nation," Jordan said. The bill passed the House with Jordan's strong support by a vote of 400 to 30. Contained in the legislation is $613.6 million for procurement of the Stryker light armored vehicle, the upper hull of which is produced at JSMC. The number represents an increase of $325 million over President Obama's budget request. In supporting the increase, the House cited the importance of Stryker brigades in meeting our challenges in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world. Also included is full funding for Abrams tank upgrades performed at JSMC and related sites. Jordan committed his support for Abrams upgrade programs to the Appropriations and Armed Services Committees earlier this year. Further, the bill contains $243.5 million for continued research and development work on the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, a Marine Corps amphibious vehicle. JSMC performs all EFV manufacture and assembly work. "Our troops serving around the world continue to prove the benefits of modern armored vehicles," Jordan said. "JSMC can take great pride in its outstanding contributions to these programs." Additionally, the bill contains $3 million included at Jordan's request to further develop JSMC's friction welding cell technology. This program, which received federal funding in Fiscal Years 2005, 2006, and 2009, automates the many hundreds of individual welds required in large combat vehicle manufacturing. This funding for the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) program is included in the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Defense spending bill, which passed the House with Jordan's strong support by a vote of 400 to 30. "This is outstanding news for the 179th and the Ohio National Guard," Jordan said. "These funds will help keep the JCA program on track and keep the unit on course for its new mission." Following the 2005 base closure round, under which the 179th was slated to lose its C-130 aircraft, the National Guard Bureau confirmed a plan to assign JCAs to the unit. Under plans formalized by the Air Force last year, the 179th is scheduled to be among the first units to receive the new mid-range cargo planes. Jordan has made the JCA program a top priority since taking office in 2007. Earlier this year, he committed his support for the JCA to the House Appropriations Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. He has also contacted top Pentagon and National Guard leaders--including Lieutenant General Harry M. Wyatt, Director of the Air National Guard--in support of locating all JCA training activities at Mansfield Lahm Airport, home of the 179th. "With two runways, clear airspace, and no competing commercial carriers, Mansfield Lahm is the ideal home for JCA training," Jordan said. Overall, the defense spending bill provides $636 billion in funding to the Department of Defense, including nearly $30 billion for service member medical care programs. It fully funds a 3.4-percent military pay increase—0.5 percent above President Obama's request. "The extraordinary sacrifices of our men and women in uniform make it of paramount importance that we give them the equipment and support they need to complete their mission," Jordan said. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:07Z |

The $11.4 million provision is included in the 2010 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, which was approved by a 415 to 3 vote today. The funding will be put toward the construction of facilities to house a 200-person detachment of the 200th RED HORSE (Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers) Squadron activated at Mansfield Lahm last year. "This is fantastic news for Mansfield and the region," Jordan said. "Mansfield's RED HORSE detachment needs modern facilities to facilitate training and mobilization efforts." RED HORSE units provide heavy repair and construction functions where land-based forces are not available or practical. These self-sufficient air-based units are designed for rapid deployment to remote, high-threat environments. As Jordan noted in letters earlier this year to the House Appropriations Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, the 200th RED HORSE detachment currently operates out of facilities that are too small and not configured for its mission. As a result, important training missions are often postponed, resulting in a reduced level of readiness. Legislation authorizing the funding request was passed by the House last month. Jordan said that he will work to protect the funds as the Senate proceeds with work on the legislation. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:07Z |

"President Obama said that electricity rates would ‘skyrocket' under this cap-and-trade system. Now we know the average American household can expect a $3,100 increase in utility bills per year because of this bill," said Jordan. "It is terrible legislation that will hurt families and cost Americans jobs – particularly the manufacturing jobs in our part of America." Jordan said the 1,200-page cap-and-trade bill was finished being written about 3:00 am this morning, and members were given only three hours to debate the bill before a vote was called. Jordan also said that in a rush to pass the bill, Democrat leaders only allowed 1 of the 224 proposed amendments to be considered. "Americans have a right to be outraged! Congress should be focused on cutting energy costs and increasing competitiveness to turn our economy around, but this bill gives a big payout to the radical environmentalists while lowering the boom on the average American," Jordan added. "The only workers who will benefit from this short-sighted bill are those living in China and India." Jordan said that out of the nearly 1,000 calls, faxes and emails his offices received about the topic in the past few days, his constituents have been opposed to cap-and-trade by a 250-1 margin. The bill passed by a vote of 219 – 212 with 44 Democrats joining 168 Republicans in opposition. It now heads to the United States Senate for further consideration. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:07Z |

The provisions are included in the Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization Act, which was approved with Jordan's support by a 389 to 22 vote today, with one voting present. "Our troops in Iraq rely on the Stryker's mobility and survivability when performing counter-insurgency operations," Jordan said. Jordan championed a multi-state congressional effort to support continued acquisition of the Stryker, the upper hull of which is produced at JSMC. An additional $312.7 million in Stryker funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2009 supplemental spending bill signed into law Wednesday. The authorization bill would also provide more than $185 million for System Enhancement Package (SEP) upgrades to Abrams tanks. Under the SEP program, tanks are fitted with high-tech diagnostic equipment, night vision capabilities, and improved fire control systems. "Getting a handle on the out-of-control spending in Washington D.C. is my top priority," said Jordan. "Families and businesses across the country are tightening their belts in these tough economic times, but Congress continues to spend like there is no tomorrow. For the sake of future generations, we have to restore a sense of fiscal responsibility to this town, and my amendments are a modest first step in doing so." Jordan said his proposal would return spending for most federal agencies to 2008 levels, before over $2 trillion was spent on taxpayer-funded bailout and stimulus bills. "We can save more than the entire two-year state budget in Ohio by simply asking non-defense federal agencies to continue operating on the same budget they successfully operated under just 12 months ago," noted Jordan. Jordan said that he offered more than $20 billion in budget cuts under the Bush Administration, saying that responsible spending is an issue that both Republicans and Democrats must take seriously. "Hard-working Americans are tired of seeing the federal government grow faster than taxpayers can afford," said Duane Parde, President of the 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union. "Congressman Jordan deserves praise for his common-sense proposal to reduce federal spending without forcing agencies to take drastic measures. American families have had to rethink their budgeting to make ends meet – at the very least, Congress should be able to do the same." Jordan concluded, "Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke brought his message to Capitol Hill and it fell upon deaf ears; we have a $2 trillion budget that needs to be reduced while we consider countless spending measures on the House floor. This is a sacrifice that needs to be made for the sake of our country." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:07Z |

In a June 24, 2009 letter announcing the completion of the long-awaited Area Mail Processing study, USPS District Manager Don Marshall wrote to Congressman Jordan that "…After careful review, it has been determined that there are currently no significant opportunities to improve efficiency and/or service through consolidation of mail processing operations at the Akron P&DC. So, no significant changes will be made at this time." Jordan said he credited a community-wide effort of postal workers, elected officials, local media, and residents. He said his staff had been in contact with postal union and management officials about the issue for almost a year. On February 13, 2009, Jordan requested the U.S. Postmaster General provide him a detailed explanation of how the proposed consolidation would save money without hurting service. Having received an unsatisfactory response, Jordan's staff attended the April 7, 2009 public meeting in Mansfield, where they announced Jordan's intent to call upon the General Accounting Office (GAO) to conduct a third-party analysis of any USPS claims of savings. On April 20, 2009, Jordan and California Rep. Darrell Issa sent a joint letter to the GAO about the Mansfield situation. "This proves that by working together, gaining the attention of the decision-makers, and making a strong case based on the facts, great things can happen and jobs can be saved," said Jordan. "Moving forward, we need to make sure that our facility keeps improving while we keep a watchful eye and hold government leaders accountable at all levels," he added. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:15:07Z |

"The decision to close the Ontario facility, one of the most productive and efficient automotive operations in the nation, lies squarely at the feet of the President's Auto Task Force," said Jordan. Jordan said that he will work with city and county officials in their efforts to move forward, but still demanded that the Obama Administration pay greater respect to affected workers and families in Richland County. "Obama Administration officials are touring auto facilities across the Midwest, but they have wrongly neglected us," said Jordan. Our workers deserve better. They deserve that someone from the Administration come here, look them in the eye, and tell them why they chose to close their plant." "There's still time to fix what's wrong and turn our economy and auto industry around the right way. I believe this can be done if the President would enact a five-year moratorium on the newly-proposed CAFE standards, to provide more incentive for Americans to keep buying the trucks and SUVs that the Ontario facility helps produce. Additionally, Congress must end the rush towards the radical "cap-and-trade" environmental policy that is putting the American auto industry at a competitive disadvantage. An "all of the above" energy policy must be at the top of their to-do list to provide incentives for more drilling and refining to keep gas prices down. After proposing over $4 trillion in new federal spending and borrowing over half of next year's proposed budget, President Obama suggested that his administration would be willing to cut 0.0025 percent from federal spending. Jordan said that such a cut amounted to someone making $50,000 per year, while putting an additional $37,500 on their credit card per year, cutting $2.19 from their annual spending. "With all due respect, the President's so-called budget cutting efforts have been a joke," Jordan said. "Since taking office a couple of months ago, President Obama and Congress have spent like there is no tomorrow, with their first-year budget deficit on track to be four times higher than the highest previous deficit in American history." Jordan said that he would propose that the group adopt some of the belt-tightening measures in the balanced budget bill he introduced last month, including a 1% across-the-board cut for non-defense federal agencies for each of the next ten years, and reduction or elimination of over 150 federal programs deemed by the Government Accountability Office to be an ineffective use of taxpayer dollars. "No nation in history has ever taxed-and-spent its way into prosperity, and if we are going to get our economy back on track, we need to set priorities for our federal government and begin to reduce spending in areas where it is not necessary," Jordan added. "I've been working on this issue since day one, and I am pleased that our legislative leaders have asked me to help develop this vision for America's future." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"This is great news both for our troops and for the men and women at JSMC who provide the military with the equipment it needs to defend our nation," Jordan said. The bill, which passed the House on a vote of 368 to 60 today, provides additional funding for Department of Defense and Department of State operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. A total of $451.1 million will go toward the purchase of Stryker light armored vehicles, the upper hull of which is produced at JSMC. Jordan spearheaded efforts in the House to increase this number from the $112.7 million originally requested by the administration, citing the urgent need for Stryker Medical Evacuation Vehicles (MEVs) that are helping to save lives on the battlefield. He led 117 of his colleagues in a letter to the House Appropriations Committee asking for this additional funding for Stryker MEV acquisition. Also included in the bill is $100 million for Abrams tank upgrades performed at JSMC and related sites. Jordan committed his support for Abrams upgrade programs to the Appropriations and Armed Services Committees earlier this year. Jordan said he expects the funding package to head for the President's desk after Senate action on it. "This legislation honors the service and sacrifice of our troops, providing them with the resources they need," Jordan said. "We must remain steadfast in our commitment to a strong national defense in the face of the many threats we must confront." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"On the same day that the government registered the largest monthly deficit in the history of our country, $164.4 billion, Congress continued its bailout spending spree by approving another government bailout to a private industry," said Rep. Jordan. The Congressman has sought to help the auto industry by supporting a comprehensive energy policy. One that will access our nation's own oil and natural gas resources and allow increased drilling and refining to improve the long-term financial stability of our economy. He also supports a lower tax rate and the elimination of government mandates. As another bailout moves forward, the Congressman believes in four fundamental reasons as to why this is the wrong policy for our country. "First, once you start down this road, it's difficult to turn around. Secondly, it does not work – as we've seen from the first round of bailouts. Third, it is wrong to saddle future generations with a debt currently approaching $11 trillion. And finally, the same government that has given us record deficits and debt should not attempt to tell the auto industry how to run its business with concepts like the ‘car czar'." The automobile industry is an integral part of Ohio and the fourth district, in need of real, long-term solutions from Congress that will revitalize the industry and the American economy. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"The situation in the nation's financial markets is at the forefront of everyone's mind, yet I do not believe that a three-quarter trillion dollar taxpayer-funded bailout was the answer. Today, Congress missed the opportunity to unleash the nation's entrepreneurial spirit, along with a wave of private capital and investment, to deal with the needs of the market in a truly American way. Instead, $700 billion of taxpayer money was put towards a bailout that only serves to hurt our nation's long-term financial health. It increases our national debt, increases the size of government, and moves us further down the road of unsustainable federal budget growth. My support is with an alternative plan that would utilize private capital to solve the problem far better than government bureaucrats. By removing the barriers to risk-taking and investment, and providing a government-backed insurance program as a safety net, we would be laying the groundwork to avoid future problems. I came to Washington to stand up for the interests of regular families and taxpayers who have already felt the impact of the market downturn. They should not be forced to shoulder the burden of those who created the bailout as well. This bill is characteristic of this tax-and-spend Congress, and one that I will continue fighting against." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

The oversight was brought to their attention after IRS officials released to employers the new withholding tables to implement the credit. Withholding tables indicate the amount of payroll tax that should be withheld from an employee's paycheck. The IRS also instructed that the new tables be used for withholding tax on pensions. Under the law however, the "Making Work Pay" tax credit does not apply to pension payments. "This is yet another example of the resulting problems from haphazardly passing a thousand-page, trillion dollar spending bill without giving members time to read it," said Jordan. "The victims here will be retirees that receive pensions. These recipients will receive the credits and be required to pay it back on April 15, 2010. Congressman Tiberi and I are demanding that Secretary Geithner and Chairman Rangel find a solution to this problem immediately." The National Education Association, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, and other pension systems have expressed their discontent with problem. The "Making Work Pay" tax credit was included in the 2009 Stimulus bill that was signed into law in February. The 1,000+ page bill was rushed through the House and voted against by both members. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"Congress has been on a spending spree for the past number of years, adding two government bailouts to a current national debt of 10.6 trillion dollars," said Jordan. "I am convinced that unless we change course and begin exercising some fiscal restraint, the debt facing our kids and grandkids will soon be insurmountable." Jordan, who offered more spending cuts than any other member of Congress in the past two years, was named Chairman of the Budget and Spending Task Force for the Republican Study Committee (RSC). He said he will use the position to build bipartisan support for his proposal to have budget watchdogs go line-by-line in the federal budget to identify wasteful federal spending to be cut. "Just like families and businesses in our district have had to do in these tough economic times, Congress needs to tighten its belt and cut wasteful spending." Chairman of the RSC, Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) said, "Jim Jordan has emerged as a bold leader in the fight to bring accountability and sanity to spending in Congress. As we look to restore vibrant economic growth and prosperity, we will be relying heavily on Jim's leadership over the next two years." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Jordan, a member of the House Budget Committee and Chairman of the Republican Study Committee Budget and Spending Task Force, said that there are two fundamental differences between the plans. First, Jordan said that his budget is balanced, while the Obama budget would double the national debt to $23 trillion. Second, Jordan's budget does not increase taxes, while the Obama budget would increase taxes on income, marriage, energy and charitable donations. "Today's economy is forcing families and businesses across Ohio to tighten their belts and make tough choices," said Jordan. "Why shouldn't the federal government have to make tough choices and prioritize its spending? It is an insult to the people we represent that Congress cannot balance its budget just like regular Americans balance theirs." To reach balance, Jordan's budget eliminates all Congressional earmarks and reduces or eliminates funding for over 150 federal programs that have been determined by the General Accounting Office (GAO) to be an ineffective use of taxpayer dollars. Next, it asks most federal agencies to decrease their spending by 1% per year for ten years. Jordan's budget still increases funding for Medicare and Medicaid at the rate of economic growth and inflation, and protects current law for Social Security. "This economic crisis is not an excuse for outlandish and unnecessary federal spending. In fact, it should be an opportunity for us to tighten our belts and instill some fiscal responsibility in the budget," Jordan said. "Americans are demanding that Congress stop the spending spree that will continue our country down a path towards a fiscal train wreck." Jordan's budget alternative is expected to be debated and receive a vote later today. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

I was honored and humbled to speak in front of hundreds of thousands of them on the National Mall today at the March for Life. The passion and commitment of those supporting the Pro-Life cause is woven into the very fabric of our nation. In their wisdom, the Founders listed the Right to Life first among our unalienable God-given rights. Today, we are still tasked with upholding the Founders' vision for a culture of life in America. Polly and I attended our first March for Life twenty years ago, and each year grow more optimistic about the progress we are making. In Congress, I will continue leading the fight to defend life and honor the idea that all Life is a sacred, precious gift from God. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Stephanie brought genuine passion to her work as a representative of the people of Cleveland--her lifelong home. Her tireless advocacy on behalf of her constituents was an example to all members. Her ten years in Congress were preceded by nearly two decades of service as a county judge and later as county prosecutor, where she honed skills that made her such an effective advocate for urban issues in Congress. While Stephanie and I were often on opposite sides during House Floor debates, we worked together seamlessly on many issues of paramount importance to our state. I was honored to stand with her many times in support of Ohio's defense sector and the numerous jobs it supports. The experience she brought to these efforts was invaluable. Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) was recognized for his outstanding pro-taxpayer voting record last year. The 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU), a nonpartisan citizen group, has announced that Rep. Jordan is among only a few dozen 2008 "Taxpayers' Friend Award" recipients out of the entire House of Representatives and Senate. "Given today's economic climate, fiscal discipline is more important now than ever," NTU President Duane Parde said. "Fortunately, taxpayers have a staunch ally in Rep. Jim Jordan to whom National Taxpayers Union is proud to present a ‘Taxpayers' Friend Award.'" The award is given to Representatives and Senators who achieve an "A" grade in NTU's annual Rating of Congress. The Rating, which is based on every roll call vote affecting fiscal policy, assigns a "Taxpayer Score" to each Member of Congress that indicates his or her support for reducing or controlling federal spending, taxes, debt, and regulation. For 2008, a total of 182 House and 104 Senate votes were selected. "Jordan's pro-taxpayer score of 89 percent was the eighth-highest in the House and the highest in Ohio," Parde said. "By voting time and again to reduce federal spending, taxes, and debt, Jim has led by example in the fight to defend overburdened taxpayers across the country." Between 2007 and 2008, the average "Taxpayer Score" in the House rose slightly from 35 percent to 36 percent. The Senate's average dropped by five points, from 37 percent to 32 percent. In 2008, 48 lawmakers attained scores sufficient to win the "Taxpayers' Friend Award" (at least 80 percent in the House and 76 percent in the Senate). Meanwhile, a record 267 Senators and Representatives captured the title of "Big Spender" for posting "F" grades (scores of 25 percent or less in the House and 14 percent or less in the Senate). "If every Member of Congress was as principled as Rep. Jordan, current and future generations of Americans could enjoy much lower taxes and a less wasteful government," Parde concluded. "At a time when instability in the financial markets is making regular Americans uneasy about the economy, this tax-and-spend Congress believes higher taxes and more federal spending is the answer," said Jordan. "Families across America are tightening their belts and bracing for the road ahead, but not this Congress," he added. Jordan said the hastily-passed spending measure, called a Continuing Resolution, stemmed from Democrats' failure to pass the 12 required spending bills before the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. Continuing Resolutions are designed to avoid a government shutdown by continuing expenditures at their current levels into the next fiscal year. However, this Continuing Resolution increased spending by more than 7% over current levels, including a massive $32 billion hike in non-defense, discretionary spending. "Congress should address the important issues facing this country in a fiscally responsible way," Jordan concluded. "Instead, they opted to pass a bill full of earmarks and excessive spending that sets our nation further down the track toward a fiscal train wreck. I remain committed to turning the train around and reintroducing the concept of fiscal responsibility to Washington D.C." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"It was refreshing to see that the overwhelming sentiment of the American people, echoed by House Republicans over the August recess, has moved Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats from a staunch ‘no new energy' position to one that is willing to consider a move towards energy independence," said Jordan. "We need to keep the pressure on them to ensure that we have a comprehensive energy policy that includes new drilling, expanded refinery capacity, and more incentives for renewable and alternative fuels, the combination of which will put us on the path to independence from Middle Eastern oil," he added. Jordan said the Democrat bill included a limited amount of new drilling, but was rife with drilling restrictions and tax hikes, both of which would lead to price spikes. "This bill has no payoff at the pump, where we need it most," concluded Jordan. Instead of looking to address the concern in a free-market fashion, this tax-and-spend Congress chose to spend $700 billion dollars, the equivalent of one quarter of the federal budget, on a Wall Street bailout. The provision is included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Department of Defense authorization bill, which was approved with Jordan's support by a 384 to 23 vote tonight. "Our troops in Iraq rely on the Stryker's mobility and survivability when performing counter-insurgency operations," Jordan said. Jordan helped lead a multi-state congressional effort to support continued acquisition of the Stryker, the upper hull of which is produced at JSMC. Also included in the legislation is more than $351 million for System Enhancement Package (SEP) upgrades to Abrams tanks. Under the SEP program, tanks are fitted with high-tech diagnostic equipment, night vision capabilities, and improved fire control systems. JSMC has been responsible for modernizing hundreds of tanks under this and similar programs. Jordan committed his support for the Abrams upgrades to the House Armed Services Committee in March. "This is an important committee in determining federal spending levels. I am looking forward to playing a hands-on role in the budget process," Jordan said. "This opportunity will help me continue working toward one of my top priorities: keeping federal spending under control." The Budget Committee sets the framework for consideration of the 12 annual spending bills that fund government activities. It also oversees the Congressional Budget Office and holds regular hearings on federal spending. Republican Leader John Boehner (R-West Chester) said that Jordan earned the chance to serve on the committee during his active first year in Congress. "Jim really hit the ground running in Congress, making his passion for limited government well known. His hard work will be an asset not only to the committee, but to taxpayers and families across Ohio and the nation," Boehner said. Budget Committee Ranking Republican Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) welcomed Jordan, noting that "the Budget Committee plays a key role in addressing some of our nation's most pressing challenges, among them: balancing the budget without raising taxes, promoting sustained economic growth, slowing the growth of federal spending, and addressing the coming entitlement crisis." "Jim Jordan has a solid conservative record, and has worked hard to ensure that Ohioans'--and all Americans'--tax dollars are being spent wisely. He will be a great addition to the Budget Committee," he added. Jordan will join Ohioans Patrick J. "Once again, Congress has its priorities all wrong," said Jordan, a member of the House Budget Committee. "In uncertain economic times, with rising energy and food prices, Congress should be putting the federal budget on a diet instead of feeding it." Jordan noted that the $3.1 trillion budget proposal would require nearly $700 billion in new taxes, an amount that would be the largest tax increase in American history. "People talk about the tax-and-spend mindset of Washington, but this Congress has a spend-and-tax problem as well," Jordan quipped. "There are a number of challenges facing our country. We need oil exploration to reach energy independence, we need a concerted effort to secure our borders against illegal immigration, we need stronger protective measures in place to thwart terrorism, and we need to get our country's fiscal house in order." "Solutions to these challenges require a bold, first step," Jordan added. "Holding the line on federal spending is the direction we need to head. This budget doesn't do it, so our fight for fiscal responsibility will continue." Following are Jordan's prepared Floor remarks on the budget proposal. Madam Speaker, I rise today in strong opposition to the bloated budget conference report brought forth by the majority. In this time of economic uncertainty, with record-high energy prices, with the cost of food and fuel taking an increasing share of the family budget, Congress has a moral responsibility to find ways to tighten its belt. Rather than spending in its usual lavish way, Congress should be laser-focused on cutting wasteful and duplicative spending from the federal budget in order to lower taxes and let American families and businesses keep more of what they earn. "It is outrageous that five liberal Supreme Court justices can strike down a state law because they believe the law is too tough on child rapists," Jordan stated. "If there is ever an issue that has no business being decided by the federal courts, it is the laws a community passes to protect itself from violent criminals." The Court's Kennedy v. Louisiana decision overturned a state law that allowed capital sentences for individuals convicted of raping a child under age twelve. Jordan said the court's decision invalidates similar laws in five other states: Georgia, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas. Jordan pointed out the absurdity of a statement in the majority opinion implying that "evolving standards of decency" should influence the decisions of the courts. "The Supreme Court was created by our Founders to interpret the law, not to make it," said Jordan. "The only ‘standard' it should be using to decide cases is the Constitution of the United States." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

There are a number of reasons behind today's spike in energy prices, perhaps the most significant of which is the failure of Congress and the President to enact a commonsense energy policy over the past 30 years. Congress still has time to change course--but short-term, feel-good answers aren't enough. I support a "gas tax holiday" to provide immediate price relief this summer, but more than that must be done in the long term. By making a few bold decisions to increase our domestic energy supply, we can cut fuel prices while putting our nation on a responsible path toward reducing our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. First, it is important to understand some of the reasons why energy prices are rising--beginning with increased demand for energy both in America and around the world. The United States has the world's largest economy, and as such, we are the world's largest oil consumer. Despite advances in alternative and renewable fuels, our economy will continue to depend on energy sources like oil, gas, and coal into the foreseeable future. Further, while conservation efforts and technological advances help increase energy efficiency, our nation's energy needs are expected to grow by 40 percent over the next two decades. Coupled with our increased demand, countries like China and India are also buying a greater share of the world's oil to fuel their rapid economic growth. China's oil needs are expected to triple between now and 2030, adding even more pressure to the world oil market. Growing demand drives up current market prices, and projected increases in demand drive costs up even more through speculation in the futures market. Congress cannot legislate away the increased world demand for oil, but Congress can allow us to increase our domestic energy supply to help meet future demand. It is cr… | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Jordan's topic was the Protect America Act, crucial intelligence-gathering legislation that is set to expire on Saturday night. House Democrats adjourned for the Presidents' Day recess Thursday without bringing a bipartisan Senate-passed renewal bill to the floor for consideration. "Make no mistake: this essential law will expire because House Democrat leaders decided to put partisan priorities over the public interest," Jordan said in his address. "And when that moment comes in a matter of hours from now, our intelligence community will be at a disadvantage--and your security will be at greater risk." The full text of Jordan's address follows. The complete audio file is available at www.gop.gov under "Weekly Radio Address." Hello. This is Congressman Jim Jordan, and I represent Ohio's Fourth Congressional District. Since our homeland came under attack on September 11, 2001, our nation has been engaged in a dedicated effort to eliminate the threat foreign terrorists pose to our security and our way of life. And though the terrorist threat does not expire Saturday night, a law that gives us the ability to track terrorist communications does. The law I'm talking about is called the Protect America Act. It gives our intelligence community the tools they need to track the movements of foreign terrorists in an era when al Qaeda can transmit its marching orders anywhere in the world in an instant. It allows intelligence agents to detect and disrupt terror plots before they can be carried out and kill untold numbers of innocent Americans. It is this law that House Democrats are allowing to expire. Earlier this week, the United States Senate passed a bipartisan extension by an overwhelming vote--and House Republicans and some of our Democrat colleagues demanded immediate action. Yet House Democrat leaders spurned our bipartisan pleas and instead decided to adjourn for a 13-day recess without extending… | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

The money, issued through FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grants account, will be used to acquire and demolish 19 heavily damaged residential homes along the Black Fork of the Mohican River. The properties will ultimately be returned to open space. Jordan noted that this positive result is due to the leadership of Shelby officials working with the community, his office, and the state and county emergency management agencies to develop and promote a top-notch grant proposal. "The day after the flood, I saw with my own eyes how this tragedy pulled the community together. I appreciate Shelby's hard work and perseverance on this issue for the past year," said Jordan. "At long last, Congress is doing the responsible thing by passing a surveillance bill that ensures our continued ability to listen in on terrorist communications," Jordan said. The legislation modernizes and extends the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which allows our intelligence services to monitor communications from foreign terror suspects to points inside the United States. It passed the House today on a 293 to 129 vote. Jordan noted that House Democrats had blocked FISA legislation since last year, refusing to bring up a bipartisan bill that passed the Senate by a two-to-one margin. The intelligence community has cautioned that failure to pass a FISA bill before August could result in the loss of valuable intelligence that could help prevent terrorist attacks. "The threat posed by terrorists doesn't end in August, and neither should our ability to track their communications," Jordan said. "While I am disappointed with the 2012 sunset attached to this bill, it nonetheless avoids another short-term fix." The bill now heads to the Senate, where its passage is not certain due to opposition from members of the Democrat leadership. "The Senate took the lead in passing FISA modernization legislation last year. I encourage Senate Democrats to recognize that we cannot afford to interfere with the collection of intelligence that will save American lives." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Only Speaker Pelosi or the President can call us back into special session, and we're ready to go!" he added. "Congressman Jordan's 100-percent rating reflects his consistent support for conservative ideals across a broad range of issues," said Larry Hart, the ACU's Director of Government Relations. "Grassroots conservatives in Ohio and across the country will continue to look to Congressman Jordan for leadership in the House." The "Best and Brightest" designation is reserved for members of Congress who consistently vote to uphold conservative principles on fiscal, national defense, religious freedom, energy independence, life, and other issues. In determining its ratings for 2007, the ACU scored 25 House votes, including a "yes" vote to expand offshore energy exploration and reduce gas prices. The average rating for House members in 2007 was 43 percent. "I appreciate this high honor from the ACU, and thank the group for its ongoing commitment to the conservative cause," Jordan said. "We share the view that bold action is necessary to address the challenges we face: the need for more oil exploration to reach energy independence, the need to secure our borders against illegal immigration, the need for a stronger national defense to thwart terrorism, and the need for fiscal discipline to cut wasteful spending from the federal budget." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

The award is presented to members of Congress who achieve an "A" rating in the NTU's annual report analyzing congressional votes on fiscal policy. In 2007, 427 House votes were rated. Jordan's pro-taxpayer score for 2007, according to NTU, was 91 percent--the highest among Ohio's congressional delegation. The average pro-taxpayer score for House members was 35 percent. "While many members of Congress talked about reducing the size of government last year, Jim Jordan of Ohio consistently backed up those words with action," NTU President Duane Parde said. "This award proves that Congressman Jordan is a staunch ally we can count on in our battle to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington." "America needs a plan that will lower prices and put us on the path toward energy independence," Jordan said. "This bill provides incentives for new American oil refineries, expanded exploration in ANWR (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) and under federal lands and water, while promoting investments in renewable energy sources. It takes the question of ‘where should we look for new energy' and answers it ‘all of the above.'" Jordan decided that the discharge petition was necessary because of months of inaction on the issue by congressional leadership. He said he planned to sign similar petitions calling for votes on other energy bills as well. Jordan noted that the U.S. is the only nation to place most of its known oil reserves off-limits to exploration. He added that the Departments of Energy and Interior estimate that total American energy resources currently off-limits contain enough oil and natural gas to replace OPEC imports for more than 50 years. "Congress always seems to find time for pointless exercises like naming post offices and holding hearings on steroid use in baseball, but can't seem to find time for an up-or-down vote about when this country is finally going to enact an energy plan that puts American families first," Jordan said. Jordan said that House rules require a vote on any legislation whose discharge petition receives the signature of the majority of House members. "With high taxes, rising food prices, and $4.00 gasoline, the time to act is now," Jordan added. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them and everyone who was affected by the tragedy. In addition to "driver error," the NTSB specifically cited the Georgia Department of Transportation's failure to provide proper signage and road markings to ensure safety at the exit ramp where the accident occurred. Investigators noted that nine accidents have occurred at that location since 1997. I understand that Georgia officials have already implemented some recommendations to improve safety at the interchange. I hope that state and local officials across the country take note of the NTSB's findings and redouble their commitment to protecting motorists in their states. "This budget proposes to spend an astonishing $100,000 a second, $6 million a minute, $350 million an hour--every day for a year," Jordan said. "Our economy simply cannot sustain this obscene amount of spending." Jordan's amendment would have held discretionary spending (except for national defense, homeland security, and veterans' programs) to current levels. The move would have saved $22 billion this year and $277 billion over five years. Committee Democrats opposed Jordan's amendment, which was defeated on a party-line vote. The Democrat budget was subsequently approved along party lines. "Future generations will be faced with unsustainable growth in entitlement programs if we don't get federal spending under control," said Jordan. "Acting now to reduce spending, cut taxes, and eliminate deficits will help us best prepare for the challenges that lie ahead." Jordan also offered an amendment--also defeated along party lines--to create a modern-day "Grace Commission" to identify waste and fraud in the federal budget. The original Grace Commission, named for its chairman, industrialist J. Peter Grace, was formed by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. It identified $424 billion in government waste. "Families and taxpayers already face enough challenges in this economy," said Jordan. "They deserve a government that is doing everything it can to put more money in their pockets and help them succeed. The time for the federal government to begin tightening its belt is now." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"This bill, like much of what Democrats have tried to pass this year, presumes that we can tax-and-spend our way to an energy policy," said Jordan. "In reality, taxing our own energy companies will do nothing but raise prices while increasing dependence on Middle Eastern oil in the marketplace." Jordan said he believes America needs a national energy policy that increases our short-term domestic energy supply through added mining and refining capacity--and makes a long-term effort to move the country toward domestic alternative and renewable fuels. He said the Democrat energy bill adds new environmental mandates on businesses and consumers instead of identifying ways to increase the supply and reduce the price of fuel. Jordan said that he and other fiscal conservatives also opposed the $21 billion tax increase in the bill, as well as a host of new federal mandates that will negatively impact manufacturing jobs in Ohio and the Fourth District. "I simply can't understand why Democrats believe we have no choice but to raise taxes and hurt Ohio's manufacturing jobs in order to accomplish their agenda." "With new challenges from the global marketplace every day, we must focus both our energy and economic policy on increasing our competitiveness--not raising taxes," Jordan added. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"This bill is a victory for our troops as well as the men and women at JSMC who provide the military with the equipment it needs to defend our great nation," Jordan said. Contained in the bill is more than $1.9 billion for procurement of the Stryker light armored vehicle, the upper hull of which is produced at JSMC. Citing the outstanding performance and exceptional troop protection afforded by Strykers currently deployed in Iraq, Jordan spearheaded efforts in Congress to secure additional Stryker procurement funding over President Bush's $1.0 billion budget request. Fourteen of his Ohio congressional colleagues joined him in signing letters earlier this year to the House Appropriations Committee and the House Armed Services Committee in support of this increase. Also included is full funding of the President's budget request for Abrams tank upgrades performed at JSMC and related sites. Jordan committed his support for Abrams upgrade programs to the Appropriations and Armed Services Committees in March. "Our troops in Iraq continue to prove the benefits of a modern Abrams tank fleet," Jordan said. "JSMC can take great pride in its continued outstanding contributions to our heavy armor programs." Further, the bill includes $3.5 million for a flexible high-speed manufacturing cell at JSMC. The cell will satisfy manufacturing requirements for the Stryker program and other cutting-edge military equipment procurement, leading to streamlined production and reduced costs to the taxpayer for JSMC-manufactured vehicles. Congress provided $3 million for this project in Fiscal Year 2007. Also contained in the legislation is $288 million for continued research and development work on the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, a Marine … | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"An important step in bringing fiscal responsibility to Washington is being able to look taxpayers in the eye and say that money spent in their name is going toward its intended purposes, not to line the pockets of lobbyists," said Jordan. Jordan said that pressure from Democrat party leaders kept just enough Democrats from crossing over to pass the measure, which failed on a vote of 218 to 201. "This is the type of partisanship that is most disappointing," said Jordan. "Most Americans realize that it doesn't matter if a Republican or Democrat is behind an idea if it protects taxpayers." "Accountability should be a bipartisan issue," he added. Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, supported Jordan's efforts. "Congressman Jordan is a principled conservative and again sided with the American taxpayer," he said. This summer, Jordan offered amendments to nine spending bills that would have held federal spending throughout Fiscal Year 2008 to 2007 levels. These amendments, if passed, would have resulted in more than $20 billion in taxpayer savings. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"This announcement is yet further evidence that the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 are continuing to produce results for our economy and revenue for the coffers of government," said Jordan, noting that the deficit will now be less than half of what it was just three years ago, and the lowest since 2002. Jordan said that the large spending increases being proposed by the congressional Democrat majority will either reverse this progress or will lead to higher taxes. "That is why I have been offering legislation to hold the line on federal spending," said Jordan. "We are at a critical point where we must get our fiscal house in order. Otherwise, if we allow spending to grow unfettered, our children and grandchildren will be forced to shoulder an even larger national debt." Jordan joined fellow Ohio Congressman Mike Turner (R-Centerville) this week in calling for the policy change after a 17-year-old constituent of Turner's was denied the opportunity to have his flag certificate inscribed: "This flag was flown in honor of Marcel Larochelle, my grandfather, for his dedication and love of God, country, and family." "Allowing ‘God' to be printed on flag certificates at the request of our constituents is the right decision," said Jordan. "Washington insiders sometimes forget that the Capitol and these flags belong to the American people, and no one from the government should censor the religious expressions they want printed on the flag certificates." Jordan said the issue struck a nerve with residents of his district, and he believes the flood of phone calls and e-mails from concerned residents helped change Mrs. Pelosi's mind on the issue. Pelosi initially scoffed at the idea on Tuesday, saying at a press conference "I don't know what [Turner's] point is." Today, she reversed her position and allowed Turner and Jordan's recommendations to be enacted. "This is a great first step, and reaffirms the importance of citizens standing up and speaking out about issues that matter to them," said Jordan. "I am proud of the progress we've made on this issue so far, and I will continue working with Mr. Turner to make sure the new policy is enacted correctly." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

By a vote of 21 to 15 today, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee defeated an amendment sponsored by Jordan and three other committee Republicans that would prevent state and local governments from leveling discriminatory access taxes on Internet users. A temporary ban currently in place is slated to expire on November 1. Committee Democrats also blocked passage of eight-year and six-year extensions. Instead, the Committee passed a four-year continuation of the current ban. "I'm amazed that, even when it looks like they're not raising taxes, politicians always leave the door open to tax increases down the road," Jordan said. Jordan noted that a majority of House members have joined him in cosponsoring stand-alone bills to make the ban permanent--including four Judiciary Committee Democrats who voted against the ban in committee today. Jordan said he will seek another opportunity to permanently ban access taxes when the issue reaches the House floor later this month. "This directly affects the vast majority of American families and businesses, who could face Internet taxes of up to 20 percent if Congress refuses to act," Jordan said. "They deserve to know that their representatives will work to protect the Internet from excessive taxation and burdensome regulations." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Under state legislation signed in 2000, ODA applied to the U.S. EPA earlier this year for the authority to issue National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits to confined animal feeding operations. It started six months ago, when I spoke on the House floor to warn people that House leadership was passing rules to make it easier to raise taxes on families and businesses. Just weeks later, the Democrat majority did just that, ending the "100 Hours Agenda" by raising taxes on domestic energy companies--at the same time many of us believe we should instead try to keep gas prices down and reduce our dangerous dependence on Middle Eastern oil. Then in March, a razor-thin Democrat majority of 216 to 210 passed a budget proposal to spend a colossal $3 trillion of our tax dollars. To no one's surprise, this record level of spending would be fueled by the largest tax increase in American history. Over the past few weeks, the spending spree has continued. Through the first seven of twelve federal appropriations bills, the Democrats have inexplicably voted to increase discretionary spending by $23 billion over the levels the federal agencies themselves requested. True, there are some positive things to mention in these spending measures--including pay raises for our men and women in uniform and a much-needed boost for veterans' programs. However, two overriding factors helped cement my decision to propose holding next year's non-defense discretionary spending to this year's level--essentially providing a "zero-growth" budget. First is unfettered free spending, which amounts to over $5 million per minute. Even worse, the budgets of most federal agencies are slated to grow more than three times the rate of inflation. Second is the looming entitlement-driven fiscal crisis we face in the next decade. "This is about as clear-cut an issue as we face here in Congress, and I hope this bill passes quickly," said Jordan. "Rewarding illegal behavior with the privilege of driving is not just bad transportation policy--it's bad immigration policy, and even worse for America's national security." The legislation, H.R. 4176, comes in response to recent efforts by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome and New York Governor Elliot Spitzer to begin granting licenses to illegals. Having visited the Mexican border on a fact-finding trip earlier this year, Jordan said that our first immigration priority must be to secure our borders to stop the problem of illegal immigration at its source. He also noted that immigration reform efforts in Congress must reject "amnesty" for those who are here illegally, and must also make the immigration process work better for those who follow the rules to become new citizens. "The American people understand this issue very clearly, but unfortunately the politicians don't get it," commented Jordan. "Just as the so-called immigration reform bill keeps resurfacing despite overwhelming opposition to it, this idea likely won't die easily. We must continue to speak out against similar attempts anywhere in the nation that would reward illegal behavior in this way." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

Jordan's concerns include the fact that the vast majority of the funding in the Democrat-authored farm bill would now go to food stamps instead of farm programs. "It's bad enough that Democrats only allow 14 percent of the bill's funding to go to farm commodity programs," said Jordan. "Now they want to fund their runaway social programs with yet another tax increase." Jordan said that the normally bipartisan bill is being derailed by the tax hike move. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

H.R. 2438, the Clean Up Government Act of 2007, would increase penalties for public officials convicted of bribery, graft, and similar offenses. "Government officials must be held to the highest ethical and legal standards," said Jordan, a member of the House Judiciary Committee. "Strengthening penalties for public corruption crimes will go a long way toward restoring the public's trust in their government." Jordan said that current penalties for corruption crimes committed by public officials are insufficient, citing 2006 sentencing data showing that the mean prison sentence in bribery cases was 39 months. Bribery currently carries a lower maximum sentence than similar offenses such as counterfeiting (20 years), securities fraud (25 years), mail and wire fraud (30 years), and bank fraud (30 years). The bill increases the maximum prison term in bribery and graft cases from 15 years to 30 years. It also broadens the application of federal fraud statutes to cover "any thing of value" in addition to money or property. This change ensures that intangible assets such as licenses, permits, government grants, and contract rights are within the scope of these statutes. Jordan was spurred in part by the case of former Deputy Assistant Air Force Secretary Darleen Druyun. In her position as the Air Force's number-two acquisition officer, Druyun admitted to favoring the Boeing Company in official contract negotiations while at the same time discussing possible future employment with the company. She confessed to agreeing to a highly inflated $20 billion price for 100 tanker planes leased to the government by Boeing, in part as thanks to the company for employing other members of her immediate family. Druyun pled guilty to conspiracy, but was sentenced to only nine months in a minimum security prison and subsequent community service. Preston, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), to tour flood-damaged businesses and meet with affected residents in Ohio's Fourth Congressional District. The request follows a visit to Hancock County last week by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director R. David Paulison to see the effects of last week's intense rainfall in north central and northwestern Ohio. "Last week's tour of Hancock County by Secretary Chertoff and Director Paulison helped expedite Monday's disaster declaration by the President, which freed up federal aid to our residents," Jordan said. "The SBA will play a key role in getting area families and businesses back on their feet after these devastating storms, so it's important for the SBA to see the damage firsthand." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"This is an exciting development, giving me an opportunity to play a bigger role in the legislative oversight functions of Congress," said Jordan. "I expect that we will examine some of the highest profile issues being considered by Congress." This assignment comes in addition to Jordan's current positions on the House Judiciary and Small Business Committees. He joins fellow Ohioan Michael R. Turner (R-Centerville) and 16 other Republicans on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Traditionally, the Committee's jurisdiction has included oversight of the federal workforce, the District of Columbia, the National Guard, and the Census. Current Chairman Henry Waxman (D-California) recently expanded the Committee's investigatory role into such areas as steroid use, White House e-mails, state gun laws, and Iraqi reconstruction. Chairman Waxman also made news recently, issuing a subpoena to compel testimony from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

"Until we get control of our borders, we will never truly solve the problem of illegal immigration," said Jordan. "Border security must come first." Jordan noted progress in improving security when he joined his colleagues and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on a tour of border security construction projects in Arizona earlier this year. He said that he expects robust debate on the Kennedy proposal in Congress, but still believes amnesty sends the wrong message to American families. "We are a nation of laws, and giving blanket amnesty to those who break the law violates our core American principles," Jordan said. "Amnesty is nothing more than rewarding illegal behavior by giving criminals the fruit of their crime." Jordan added that there are problems with the current legal immigration system, but does not believe the Kennedy proposal is the answer. "America is a nation built on legal immigration. We should continue to welcome those who want to follow our laws, learn our language, and become Americans," he said. "But this proposal will usher lawbreakers to the front of the line--ahead of those who are following the rules. That is the wrong direction for America." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

H.R. 1684, the Department of Homeland Security Authorization Act, provides the framework for the department's appropriations for Fiscal Year 2008. Democrat amendments offered by Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi), Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, cut programs designed to protect America's food supply, and eliminated funding for employee immigration checks at high-risk sites like airports and nuclear power plants. "In light of this week's thwarted terrorist plot aimed at Fort Dix, we need to recommit ourselves to ensuring that homeland security is a top priority of our federal government," said Jordan. Jordan said the proposed cuts to Homeland Security funding will have a far-reaching impact, but they fit the pattern of spending from the Democrat majority in Congress. "House Democrats are taking a short break from debating whether to cut off funds for our troops in battle, and now they are diverting resources from critical homeland security programs," said Jordan. "They seem to think that because 9/11 happened over five years ago, we can turn our focus away from homeland security and toward their priorities," he added. "I'm all for limiting federal spending in other areas, but I firmly believe the primary responsibility for homeland security and the U.S. military belong to the federal government," Jordan said. "They need to leave their personal agendas aside and begin putting the safety and security of our families and our homeland first," he concluded. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |

David Paulison. "Having surveyed the damaged areas and spoken extensively with affected residents, it's clear to me that federal resources are needed," Jordan said. The text of Jordan's letter follows. August 27, 2007 President George W. Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Through: Mr. Edward Buikema Administrator Federal Emergency Management Agency, Region V Chicago, Illinois 60605-1521 Dear Mr. President: I write today in support of the emergency declaration request for the State of Ohio submitted by Governor Strickland in response to the damage caused by severe storms and extensive flooding across the state. I appreciated the opportunity to speak with and tour flood-damaged areas with Secretary Chertoff and Director Paulison on Thursday, August 23. Per our conversations and after their review of the situation, they agreed with me that expedited federal assistance was in order. The State of Ohio's initial request for assistance applies to six of the 18 affected counties, of which ten had made local and/or state declarations. I represent all or part of five of the affected counties, of which four are included in the Governor's initial request for assistance. My staff and I have been in contact with local and state EMA officials throughout the crisis. I have personally visited the affected areas to gain a firsthand account of the damage. "We witnessed firsthand the widespread damage of these floods from the day the rain started," said Jordan. "The way communities across northern Ohio came together to help their neighbors recover is a model for the nation. I'm proud to have this opportunity to thank local volunteers, our first responders, and federal, state, and local officials for their hard work," he added. Fifty-one House members cosponsored Jordan's resolution, including the entire congressional delegation from Ohio. The resolution commends the efforts of public officials, emergency personnel, volunteers, charitable organizations, and other groups that assisted in the response. In House Floor remarks, Jordan praised the work of the late Congressman Paul E. Gillmor in helping affected communities in his district recover from the disaster. Jordan also thanked Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, Federal Emergency Management Agency Director R. David Paulison, and Administrator Steven C. Preston of the U.S. Small Business Administration for touring the region with him in the immediate aftermath of the flood. "Our ability to address the ongoing needs of affected residents and local governments--as well as long-term solutions to flooding and infrastructure concerns in our part of Ohio--will require continued teamwork like we had in passing this resolution," Jordan said. The text of the resolution follows. House Resolution 728 IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Mr. JORDAN of Ohio submitted the following resolution, which was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. "Tens of thousands of Ohio's senior citizens save money on prescriptions every month through Medicare Part D," Jordan said. "With an average monthly cost of $25, the program helps seniors and the disabled get the drugs they need at affordable prices." The open enrollment period, which runs through December 31, is an opportunity for senior citizens to enroll in the prescription drug program--and for those currently participating to change plans to best meet their needs. "Health care is not one-size-fits-all," Jordan said. "The 58 Medicare drug plans available in Ohio give our seniors the opportunity to pick the one that's right for them." Jordan noted that 34 of these plans have a $0 deductible, and two others have premiums under $20. For help in choosing the best plan, seniors should contact the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (1-800-MEDICARE or online at www.medicare.gov) or the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (1-800-686-1578). Low-income seniors should inquire about additional assistance through the Social Security Administration (1-800-772-1213). "I encourage all seniors in our district to sit down with their families and review their drug needs to ensure they're getting the best deal at the lowest cost," Jordan said. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T21:14:27Z |
