Today, I meet Ohioans who are remission from that same cancer due to the amazing research and therapy advances of the past two decades. But even with that progress, there is still so much work to do. While any year is busy due to the often chaotic legislative process, 2016 was also an election year. The beginning of the year saw the conclusion of a frenzied primary season for both parties that soon gave way to a bruising general election, culminating in the election of not only a new president but one-third of the Senate and every single member of the House. I can understand that as the year and Congress draws to a close, most Northeast Ohioans are happy to leave the year's political twists and turns behind, but I wanted to take the time to share with you what my staff and I have worked to achieve for the people of Ohio's 16th District this Congress. While there are some things we might want to forget, there is also much in which we can take pride. I know I speak on behalf of all my staff when I say that despite how busy our schedules might have been this year, our commitment to the 16th District always stayed at the forefront of our minds. The 114th Congress was a productive one legislatively. In total, five of the bills I introduced were passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. Three of these bills were included in a larger package called the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act. The first of these bills better protects hardworking American taxpayers from tax-related identity theft, and the second eliminates the need to file amended returns for very minor errors on certain tax information statements. The third bill prevents political targeting at the Internal Revenue Service and adds political targeting to the list of offenses for which an IRS employee can be terminated. My most recent bill to become law was the Establishing Beneficiary Equity in the Hospital Readmission Program Act, which was included in the 21st Century Cures Act.
