The report lays out efforts help Rhode Islanders with federal agencies, bring investments and federal funding to the First Congressional District, and advance legislation on key priorities for the Ocean State. The report also showcases the services and programs available to Rhode Islanders such as scheduling tours of Washington D.C., ordering flags flown over the U.S. Capitol, and providing citations for local celebrations and commemorations. “As we wrap up 2024, I'm reflecting on our team’s work for the First Congressional District over the past year. It has been an honor and privilege to work for my constituents,” said Congressman Amo, a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. “As we enter the new year, I’m ready to build on the progress we've made and raise my voice to amplify Rhode Island values.” BACKGROUND Among the achievements for Rhode Island highlighted in the report, Congressman Amo: Recovered $1,615,667 from federal agencies for residents and small businesses. Responded to 13,112 letters, calls, and emails. Secured over $20 million in federal funding for 15 community projects in the First Congressional District. Helped marshal more than $220 million in federal support to rebuild the Washington Bridge. Supported a record-breaking $30 million in federal funding for Rhode Island’s fire departments and firefighters. Conducted a Blue Economy tour of the district and introduced key legislation to advance ocean science and research. Shepherded his bipartisan AI literacy bill — the LIFT AI Act — through passage in the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Introduced common-sense legislation to keep Rhode Islanders safe and curb the epidemic of gun violence. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

This overwhelming voter is a recognition that our most basic responsibility can and should transcend partisanship,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “For Rhode Island, it will create jobs, extend vital telehealth flexibilities for Medicare beneficiaries, and ensure our government continues to provide essential services and programs. “Keeping our government open is a win for hardworking Americans and a rejection of Elon Musk’s temper tantrum. Though America won tonight, we will need to continue to remain vigilant against the pursuit of tax cuts for billionaires and harmful reductions to key programs like Medicare and Social Security.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z
https://amo.house.gov/press-release/ri-delegation-applauds-final-passage-of-legislation-creating-a-southern-new-england-regional-commission RI Delegation Applauds Final Passage of Legislation Creating a Southern New England Regional Commission 2024-12-20 2024 2024-12 Democrat House RI Gabe Amo A000380 amo.house.gov amo https://amo.house.gov/press-releases scraper Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Representatives Seth Magaziner (D-RI) and Gabe Amo (D-RI) today cheered the final passage of legislation establishing a Southern New England Regional Commission to spur region-wide economic growth and attract more federal investment to Rhode Island. The legislation passed as part of the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024, which authorizes improvements to our nation’s harbors and waterways, invests in coastal resiliency efforts, and supports U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects nationwide. The Senate cleared the bill by a vote of 97 to 1, and the measure passed the House last week by a vote of 399-18. The legislation now heads to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. “This is good news for Rhode Island, as is the fact that Senator Whitehouse is ascending to the top of the Environment and Public Works Committee. He’s always been a strong advocate for the Ocean State with an outstanding record of delivering for working families. The inclusion of this provision is a credit to him, as well as former Congressman David Cicilline, who worked the issue for many years as part of the Democratic leadership on the House side during his term in office,” said Reed. “Today’s bipartisan passage of WRDA has some big wins for Rhode Island, but none bigger than the establishment of a Southern New England Regional Commission. During his years in the House, my former colleague Congressman Cicilline was the driving force behind this effort, which will leverage partnerships between local, state, and the federal government to boost the regional economy across state lines and bring home additional federal funding to Rhode Island. I’m proud to have helped secure this long-fought victory for Congressman Cicilline and for Rhode Island,” said Whitehouse, who in the next Congress will be the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, where WRDA is drafted. “The establishment of a Southern New Engla… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

The resolution urges the agencies across the United States Government to explore and support the development and application of DLT and expresses Congress’s commitment to advancing responsible innovation. “In our rapidly evolving world, it’s critical to recognize how innovative solutions like distributed ledger technologies can help promote transparency and strengthen democratic institutions,” said Congressman Amo, a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. “I am proud to partner with Congresswoman Young Kim on this bipartisan resolution to advance the United States’ continued leadership in emerging technology like blockchain as we work to uphold our democratic values around the world.” “U.S. leadership in emerging technologies like blockchain not only improves Americans’ lives, but also helps us advance transparency, human rights, and freedom across the globe,” said Congresswoman Kim, who serves as chairwoman of the Indo-Pacific Subcommittee. “This legislation is vital, especially as we see the Chinese Communist Party exporting its surveillance technologies and authoritarianism abroad. I am proud to join Congressman Amo to lead this bipartisan resolution to ensure the United States continues to be a beacon of hope, freedom, and innovation.” BACKGROUND DLT is the technological infrastructure and protocols which allow simultaneous access, validation, and record updating across a networked database. Rhode Island’s Congressional delegation wants the federal government to coordinate efforts with the state to help keep participants enrolled in Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). “In light of a major cyberattack, we write to urge your Departments to grant the State of Rhode Island flexibility and time to comply with administrative requirements related to its public benefits programs and to provide any additional support to ensure that eligible individuals do not lose access to needed benefits,” the four members of the delegation wrote. The letter comes on the heels of a cyberattack on RIBridges (originally known as UHIP), by the international ransomware group known as Brain Cipher. RIBridges was developed by consulting firm Deloitte under a state contract. The cyberattack put the personal data (including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and bank information) of approximately 500,000 people at risk as the hackers demand a ransom payment. The letter notes that in the wake of the attack: “The State directed the vendor responsible for administering the platform to shut down RI Bridges in order to remove all malicious code and remediate the threat. Individuals now must submit paper applications to secure their benefits. The impact could be large since RI Bridges manages enrollment and eligibility verifications for programs, including Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

This legislation, which is co-led by Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), would prevent former police service weapons from being sold or transferred to unscrupulous firearms dealers. Since 2006, over 52,000 retired police firearms have been found at crime scenes. While law enforcement agencies sometimes resell retired firearms to their own officers, law enforcement agencies also routinely trade or resell their retired firearms to firearms dealers in exchange for discounts on new equipment. As a result, many retired police firearms end up being used to commit crimes. “The Responsible Retirement of Law Enforcement Firearms Act is a common-sense proposal to block the flow of dangerous guns on our streets. I am proud to introduce this legislation alongside Congressman Jamie Raskin to prevent former police weapons from being sold or transferred to unscrupulous firearms dealers,” said Congressman Amo. “These are the kinds of solutions that Rhode Islanders and the American people expect us to do in Congress. I thank all our local officials, law enforcement leaders, and advocates who joined us today in our shared goal to keep communities safe.” “Our Responsible Retirement of Law Enforcement Firearms Act addresses an urgent but little-known public safety problem: the persistent flow of retired law enforcement firearms into the criminal underground,” said Representative Jamie Raskin. “This legislation keeps guns out of the wrong hands — ensuring firearms once used by law enforcement to protect and serve our communities are not resold and repurposed for violent crime. Our nation’s gun violence epidemic demands commonsense solutions like this one, and I’m grateful to my colleague Congressman Gabe Amo for his leadership on addressing this public safety imperative.” The Responsible Retirement of Law Enforcement Firearms Act has been endorsed by Rhode Island Coalition Ag… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T22:13:55Z

The City of East Providence has been awarded a $549,770 federal grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grants Program. This grant will be carried out in conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and will focus on local roadways that serve as critical access points to the Interstate 195, which cuts through East Providence and serves as the only east-west access point connecting eastern Rhode Island and Massachusetts to Interstate 95. This Stage 1 funding will help East Providence determine the best ways to modernize local infrastructure, upgrade advanced traffic detection technology, replace outdated traffic signals, and help acquire new real-time data and traffic controls with the goal of relieving the pressure of gridlock traffic. “I am committed to doing everything I can to help East Providence address traffic control issues and relieve congestion resulting from the emergency closure of the westbound portion of the Washington Bridge. The increased strain on local roads from the closure heightens frustration and increases hazards, drive time, and the potential for accidents,” said Senator Jack Reed. “This grant will help modernize the City’s traffic control systems and make roads safer, more efficient, and easier to navigate.” “The Washington Bridge situation is causing backups into East Providence neighborhoods that were not designed to handle heavy traffic,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. “This federal funding will support upgrades to roads and traffic signals so that drivers can travel more ef… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T22:13:55Z

The NDAA now heads to the Senate for passage and is expected to be signed into law by President Biden. “America’s submarine program is one of the most important and strategic advantages we have against our adversaries, and I am proud to announce that my amendment to support this vital program has been adopted by the House,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “This amendment will help connect departing servicemembers with careers in the submarine industrial base to strengthen our nation’s maritime capabilities and keep Americans safe.” Rep. Magaziner’s amendment was among the less than 25% approved out of all 1,381 submitted amendments in the House. The included language instructs the Department of Defense, in coordination with the Secretary of Navy, to report on how the Department is using the SkillBridge program to connect separating military personnel with careers in the submarine industrial base to improve recruitment and address workforce shortages. The Department of Defense SkillBridge program is a program that allows active-duty service members to gain civilian work experience during their last 180 days of service. The program offers apprenticeships, internships, or industry training to help service members find meaningful employment after they are discharged. Many SkillBridge authorized partners also offer pathways to training and employment to veterans, National Guard, reserve and military spouses. Rep. Carper Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024, which included several priorities to bolster climate resiliency, strengthen flood protection, invest in infrastructure, and increase regional collaboration with neighboring states. Nationwide, the two-year authorization dedicates over $5 billion in new and modified environmental infrastructure authorities and it authorizes 162 new feasibility studies for future water resource development projects. “I’m proud to have secured real wins in this important bipartisan water infrastructure legislation that will benefit our state’s local infrastructure and climate resiliency needs,” said Congressman Amo. “I asked for these projects to be included because I know they would make a real difference for people in our district. I am encouraged this legislation is on a path to becoming law with the strong support in the House because it will strengthen neighborhoods, expand flood mitigation efforts, deliver clean drinking water, and foster cooperation on issues that span borders and communities.” BACKGROUND While the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure considered the bill, Congressman Amo sent a letter to colleagues on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure urging consideration of several measures to strengthen Rhode Island’s water resource infrastructure. Following this letter, the following priorities for Rhode Island’s First Congressional District were included in the final bill: Authorization of “Rhode Island Coastline, Coastal Storm Risk Management” Project Reauthorization of the National Dam Safety Program Increases the federal limit and authorizations for Continuing Authorities Programs (CAP) The final bill also includes the Southern New England Regional Commission Act. https://amo.house.gov/press-release/amo-statement-on-national-defense-authorization-act Amo Statement on National Defense Authorization Act 2024-12-11 2024 2024-12 Democrat House RI Gabe Amo A000380 amo.house.gov amo https://amo.house.gov/press-releases scraper “The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is one of the most important annual bills that Congress works on — with a 60-plus year tradition of bipartisan passage given its importance to our servicemembers and national defense,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “In this year's version, I was encouraged to see consensus provisions that will benefit Rhode Islanders and those serving our nation —a 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted servicemembers, a 4.5% raise for all others who serve, authorization for a second Virginia-class submarine, a Special Envoy to Sudan, and a greater focus on our regional security agreements. Unfortunately, Speaker Mike Johnson decided to detonate a bipartisan bill by inserting an extreme, partisan culture war provision at the 11th hour that I cannot support. “It is unconscionable that Republicans allowed the hijacking of a bill intended to keep our country safe,” continued Congressman Amo. “It will negatively impact the families of our servicemembers. This is dangerous for our national security, which is why I agree with both House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL) and Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-WA) that these provisions have no place in this bill. I voted no because we should have a real bipartisan process that supports our troops and their families, strengthens our national security, and does not target any community. We have to do better.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T22:13:55Z

The Southern New England Regional Commission Act would establish a commission that would encourage jurisdictions at different levels to work together to leverage federal support to strengthen the area’s economy. “It is great to join with our regional leaders in introducing this important piece of legislation to tackle problems that do not stop at the border of one state,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “Through the Southern New England Regional Commission, we will better coordinate efforts to fight climate change and grow our blue economy as we leverage the unique strengths of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts to unlock widespread prosperity for our communities.” "The Southern New England Regional Commission is a game-changer for Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, driving investments in defense, maritime manufacturing, and infrastructure to create good-paying jobs and strengthen our economy,” said Congresswoman DeLauro. “Together, we’ll harness federal resources to tackle shared challenges, because our economic future requires regional collaboration." BACKGOUND This legislation would establish a regional commission covering Rhode Island and surrounding counties in Massachusetts and Connecticut for purposes of promoting economic development in renewable energy, defense manufacturing, the maritime economy, infrastructure, and job training, among others. By facilitating collaboration across various levels of government with federal support, this initiative seeks to bolster the region’s economic resilience and growth. Following the delegation’s efforts to seek information and a timetable from the Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, today, the center is listed as open for business and once again ready to assist Rhode Islanders with their Global Entry applications. “We’re thrilled that U.S. Customs and Border Protections listened to us and reopened the Global Entry Enrollment Center at T.F. The Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust (TRUST) in Congress Act would reduce opportunities for insider trading by requiring Members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children to put certain investment assets into a qualified blind trust during their entire tenure in Congress. This will prevent Members of Congress from using their positions and access to confidential information to unethically inform investment decisions or influence the value of their existing investments. “Our job is to serve the American people, not ourselves — and banning Members of Congress from trading stocks is a crucial step toward restoring accountability in Congress,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “I am thankful for Representative Abigail Spanberger’s leadership on this bipartisan bill, and look forward to leading this effort in the 119th Congress alongside Representative Chip Roy to deliver this much needed reform.” “As Members of Congress, we receive sensitive briefings and take votes that move markets, making it crucial that we do not use these privileges for personal financial gain. That is why I’ve been proud to lead the bipartisan TRUST in Congress Act to ban lawmakers — as well as their spouses and dependent children — from trading, selling, or buying individual stocks while in office,” said Spanberger. “Even the perception of impropriety erodes public trust, and Americans deserve to have confidence in their elected representatives. Each year, 14 million older Americans experience falls, resulting in 3 million emergency room visits and 39,000 tragic deaths. Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults aged 65 and older, with non-fatal falls costing our health care system $80 billion annually. Seniors can reduce their risk of falling through basic home modifications, daily exercises, and other simple precautions. “Falls can be serious, and even deadly, for older Americans, and Congress must consider this issue as seriously as we would for any other medical condition,” said Representative Seth Magaziner. “Passing this legislation would be a step toward reducing preventable injuries among seniors, reducing costs to the healthcare system, and providing seniors with the resources they need to live safely and independently.” This bill requires that Medicare Part B cover the cost of fall prevention equipment including, but not limited to: grab bars, non-slip mats, shower chairs, bed rails, and other necessary devices, as prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider. Rep. Magaziner also introduced a bipartisan resolution with Reps. Lois Frankel (D-FL-22), Carol Miller (R-WV-1), Joe Morelle (D-NY-25), and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12) recognizing National Fall Prevention Awareness Week. The resolution seeks to raise awareness, encourage the prevention of falls among older adults, and highlight evidence-based programs that help reduce fall risks and save the lives of seniors. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T22:13:55Z

For centuries, the river has served as a lifeline to people living in the Blackstone Valley and continues to be rich in both history and biodiversity. The river played a crucial role in transportation, irrigation, as a drinking source, and due to its unique elevation, as a source of hydro power during the Industrial Revolution. In an effort to preserve and restore the Blackstone River and boost its resilience for future generations, U.S. Senators Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Congressman Gabe Amo today announced $1 million in federal funds for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) to study the river and identify solutions to restore its natural infrastructure. The federal funds for RIDEM and its primary project partner, the Blackstone Watershed Collaborative, flow through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s (NFWF) America the Beautiful Grant Program. The project, “Kittacuck Restored: Planning for an Accessible, Connected, Resilient River,” aims to directly engage more than 50 local partners in developing a collective roadmap for watershed improvements along the Blackstone. “The Blackstone River is a natural asset with tremendous cultural, historical, and ecological significance. We’ve invested heavily in cleaning up the river and transforming it into a healthier habitat for people and wildlife. This new federal funding will help RIDEM and its partners take additional steps to safeguard aquatic habitats that support wildlife, improve water quality, and support resilient landscapes,” said Senator Reed. “As climate change continues to impact our communities, it is critical that we invest in a better understanding of our changing environmental assets, like the Blackstone, and devise a plan to keep them healthy and safe for generations to come.” “Rhode Island’s Bla… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T22:13:55Z

The federal funds, which were awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and administered by the Rhode IslandEmergency Management Agency (RIEMA), are targeted to helping synagogues, churches, mosques, and other houses of worship or faith-based organizations enhance their security infrastructure, training, and systems. The federal NSGP funds can be used for things such as purchasing and installing appropriate locks, video cameras, and bulletproof glass. Overall, the delegation helped include a total of $664 million in NSGP funds in fiscal year 2024, including over $300 million in the National Security Supplemental Appropriations bill, which was approved by Congress after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel. During the first round of NSGP funding, DHS received 7,584 applications nationwide requesting $973 million. Of those applicants, 3,288 were approved and allocated $454.5 million. Now, members of the delegation are encouraging Rhode Island faith based entities in need of security assistance to apply for the remaining $210 million in funds available that will be distribute in a second cycle. The federal funding is now available through a Notice of Funding Opportunity published by DHS. “Whether attending a religious service or dropping your child off at camp, everybody should feel safe when they walk into a church, synagogue, or house of worship. The overall project is expected to cost about $26 million, with $19.5 million in federal funding and a $6.5 million local match. Approximately 55.5 percent of the work will be done along P&W tracks in the Ocean State at a total cost of roughly $14.46 million. The improvements will replace up to 48,000 feet of older, lighter rail, install 7,900 ties, and rebuild fourteen public grade crossings on the Providence & Worcester Railroad main line in Rhode Island, and reconfigure the tracks and replace nine track turnouts in the Valley Falls, Rhode Island P&W freight yard. The improved track turnouts will increase spacing and allow for more clearance for hazardous material shipments. When it is completed the new track should result in enhanced operational efficiency with fewer delays and faster travel times. The federal funding is administered by the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) and made possible through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program, which funds projects that improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of both passenger and freight rail. There are 29.2 million left-behind or forgotten 401(k) accounts holding approximately $1.65 trillion in assets. The workers and families who own these funds often have no idea of their existence because they have changed jobs or their former employer has gone out of business. While state unclaimed property programs already work to reunite individuals with financial assets — such as the contents of a safe deposit back or utility reimbursements — regulatory ambiguity allows thousands of accounts to go unclaimed. The letter urges the DOL to develop a uniform, nationwide regulation that allows state unclaimed property programs to help reunite individuals with their lost retirement checks. “Retirement benefits belong to the Americans who worked hard to earn them, not the large financial institutions who service them,” said Representative Seth Magaziner (D-RI-02). “As the former state treasurer of Rhode Island, I know that Rhode Island’s unclaimed property division works tirelessly to reuniteindividuals with their missing property and can do the same for missing retirement checks. The IRA Technical Assistance Summit was hosted by the State of Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources, Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank, Climate Jobs RI, CompeteRI, and the Partnership for Rhode Island. At the first meeting of the District Climate Policy Advisory Committee, there was widespread agreement that more information was needed about “Direct Pay,” an innovative tool that allows tax-exempt entities — from local governments and municipalities to education, faith, and community groups — to receive credits directly in the form of cash payments to deploy renewable energy initiatives. David Eichenthal currently leads the Treasury Department’s engagement with state and local governments on the IRA tax credit issues “Technical assistance is an often overlooked, but critically important, part of helping organizations engage with the federal government. I know this firsthand from my work in the Biden-Harris White House to implement historic federal legislation for states, cities, and towns,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “Today, I was proud to invite senior Treasury official, David Eichenthal, to our Ocean State to help local stakeholders understand how to access historic tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act. Unleashing the full potential of the law will certainly revolutionize the fight against climate change, but it only works if people knowabout it and know howto apply for it.” BACKGROUND Since being sworn into office, Congressman Gabe Amo has been a champion for Rhode Island’s environment and for action to address the climate crisis. Currently, the Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) system program used at ports of entry to scan vehicles and cargo for anomalies such as fentanyl only scans approximately 2% of passenger vehicles and less than 20% of cargo vehicles due to the following issues identified by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP): Only one-third of the passenger vehicle NII scanning systems CBP plans to use at ports of entry have the capability to adequately scan the undercarriage of vehicles, where fentanyl is often located; Certain NII technology can’t physically fit at ports of entry located on bridges and surrounded by privately-owned land; Machines that scan for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) can’t be placed near cargo scanning machines because of the radiation they release, which causes WMD scanning machines to make false detections; And lines at POEs continue to be eight to 12 … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

Neronha will receive a $500,000 federal grant for the office’s cold case unit of investigators and prosecutors. The federal funds are administered by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Prosecuting Cold Cases Using DNA Program. The Attorney General’s Office will utilize the funds for its “Closure Project” to strengthen the state’s DNA analysis capabilities and search capacity, better inventory cold cases, and review and select cases that have developed DNA suspect profiles to assist investigators in prosecuting suspects. The Rhode Island Department of Health will also receive funding from the grant, which will help provide additional capacity for DNA analysis in cold cases. “This federal funding for Attorney General Neronha and his skilled team of prosecutors, investigators, and law enforcement personnel will help make Rhode Island safer and will bring justice to victims of violent crimes and their families who have gone too long without answers and deserve closure,” said Senator Reed, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “Modern technology is constantly adding new tools that are incredibly useful to investigators. By strengthening Rhode Island’s ability to efficiently process and inventory DNA evidence, we’re making a smart investment in public safety, reducing violent crime, and bolstering our ability to pursue justice.” “No victim of a violent crime should have to wait decades for justice to be served,” said Whitehouse, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former U.S. Attorney and Rhode Island Attorney General. “This federal investment will strengthen the state’s ability to process DNA evidence and prosecute violent cold cases, bringing ju… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

In a House Committee on Foreign Affairs markup hearing, Congressman Amo denounced partisan attacks on President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken and called out Republicans who impeded a thorough investigation of the Afghanistan withdrawal by focusing only on actions taken after President Biden took office. Congressman Amo also reminded committee members that Donald Trump was derelict in his duty by failing to process visas for Afghan allies and by insisting on troop withdrawals despite the Taliban’s lack of compliance with the Doha Agreement. “My friends on the other side of the aisle have devolved this investigation into a partisan food fight — complete with spaghetti thrown at the wall in the hopes that it sticks,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “If Republicans are searching for those responsible for impeding this investigation, there is a mirror in the bathroom. By insisting on making this investigation the latest culture war avenue to bash President Biden, they’ve prevented us from carrying out a thorough investigation.” “It’s a damn shame that Republicans would rather attack President Biden before confiding — much less acknowledging — that Donald Trump bears an iota of responsibility for what happened. This is not a complete investigation. The resolution seeks to raise awareness, encourage the prevention of falls among older adults, and highlight evidence-based programs that help reduce fall risks and save the lives of seniors. “Falls can be serious—and even deadly—for older Americans, and Congress must consider this issue as seriously as we would for any other medical condition,” said Rep. Every day, workers across the country are cheated out of the pay they’ve earned by employers who fail to pay the contracted wage, steal tips, deny overtime, or otherwise skim from employee pay. Wage theft costs American workers at least $50 billion per year. That is far more than the value of all robberies, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts combined. Current federal laws on wage theft give bad actors a weak match token punishment for stealing their employees’ wages, and don’t adequately serve as a deterrent. The Don’t STEAL Act updates the penalties for wage theft violations to be commensurate with other forms of criminal theft under federal law: Under this legislation, employers who willfully fail to pay their employees the wages they are owed, fail to compensate their employees for overtime work, or steal tips will face a misdemeanor or felony, depending on the severity of the crime. Under current law, employers who commit wage theft at most face a misdemeanor. These changes will bring the penalties for wage theft to parity with other common forms of theft under federal law. Under current law, an employer who commits wilful wage theft can be criminally fined no more than $10,000, but this bill would remove that cap and require bad actor employers to be fined in proportion to wages stolen. “Here’s a simple idea: If you put in an honest day’s work, you deserve a fair and livable wage, yet so many workers are robbed of the pay they’ve worked hard for by employers who illegally steal from their employees,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner (RI-02). “This is wrong and it needs to change. I’m proud to introduce the Don’t STEAL Act to help ensure American workers receive the pay they have earned and deserve.” “When peo… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

On October 11, 2024, Mr. Nee will step down from his position, concluding a storied career of more than 50 years advocating for the essential right to organize and fair labor protections for working people. “In addition to the hundreds of fights for fair contracts, better wages and better benefits, George boldly led the Rhode Island AFL-CIO in support of marriage equality and stood for common sense gun safety laws to protect workers,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “It is a real honor to recognize my friend George and to congratulate him on his impactful and tremendous career.” “For decades, George Nee has been a dedicated champion for working families like mine in Rhode Island,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “As he prepares to hand over the reins, I thank George for his incredible career and his steadfast dedication to securing economic opportunity and advancing social justice in our state.” WATCH CONGRESSMAN AMO AND CONGRESSMAN MAGAZINER’S REMARKS MAGAZINER REMARKS AS DELIVERED Mister Speaker, I rise today to recognize the remarkable career of George Nee, a good friend, father, grandfather, and tireless advocate for working Rhode Islanders, who is retiring as the President of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO after four decades of service. George has dedicated his life to improving the lives of working people and their families. At 21 years old, he left college to work for the farm workers union, helping organize Boston’s Grape Boycott in the late 1960s and the Lettuce Boycott in 1971. He worked closely with renowned labor leader Cesar Chavez and saw firsthand how these boycotts improved the lives of workers. George then created an independent union of clerical workers, health care workers and jewelry workers in 1976 that grew to more than 1500 members. In 1983 he joined the Rhode Island AFL-CIO, working his way up from staff represen… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

Awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, the federal funds will help Smithfield update their current communications system and provide training for firefighters to better respond to a wide range of emergencies. This funding is part of the nearly $7 million in federal grants for fire departments and first responders that Rhode Island’s congressional delegation has helped deliver this year. “We fill up the bucket [as a delegation] but the fire departments have to win the grants — these are competitive grants,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. “So bravo and congratulations to Smithfield for winning half a million dollars, nearly, for an upgrade to their communications system. Congratulations to [Smithfield Fire] Chief Seltzer and recognition to [Smithfield Police] Chief Dolan as well.” “Our fire departments should be fully-staffed, highly-trained, and well-equipped. That’s the motto and that’s the metric by which we need to hold ourselves accountable,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “Thanks to these federal funds, Smithfield will be able to purchase the radios and provide the training that firefighters don’t just deserve, but have earned, through their service.” Still photos from the event can be downloaded HERE Full video of the event can be viewed HERE LEGISLATIVE BACKGROUND Over the last two years, Rhode Island fire departments and other first responders across the state have been awarded over $30 million in federal funding through FEMA AFG and Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant funding. Cooper made deeply troubling statements, including that the United States was on the ‘wrong side’ in the Second World War, and falsely claiming that millions of Jews in concentration camps 'ended up dead' only because the Nazis did not have the resources to care for them. Not only did Carlson provide a platform for Cooper’s ignorance and hate to millions of viewers, he also promoted Cooper by calling him ‘the most important popular historian in the United States.’ “This revisionist and morally repugnant retelling of history is an insult to the six million Jews who were methodically murdered at the hands of the Nazi regime and is especially dangerous now as antisemitism is on the rise globally. “It is also concerning that Elon Musk called the discussion ‘very interesting’ in a post on his platform X, and Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance refused to condemn Carlson for promoting Cooper when given the opportunity to do so. Acceptance of hateful ideologies by people in power puts Jews and other targeted minorities across the world at great risk. “The normalization of Nazism is unacceptable and dangerous, and must be forcefully condemned. Americans deserve to know that their leaders will rebuke the cancers of antisemitism and Nazism whenever and wherever they appear.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

Seth Magaziner. “However, Social Security is now under attack. Republicans in Congress are proposing to cut funding for the Social Security Administration and slash benefits by raising the retirement age. This is the opposite of what we should be doing. I am committed to protecting and strengthening social security, not cutting it.”.” Social Security keeps 22.5 million Americans above the poverty line. Almost 67 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, including over 230,000 Rhode Islanders. House Republicans’ Fiscal Year 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill cuts the Social Security Administration budget by $453 million. If enacted, this would lead to field office closures and reduced hours, increased wait times of more than 45 minutes per call, and delays for obtaining new and replacement Social Security cards. The Republican Study Committee, which represents nearly 80 percent of House Republicans and 100 percent of House Republican leadership, has also released a 2025 budget that would raise the retirement age for full Social Security benefits to 69 and lower benefits for some beneficiaries. Earlier this year Rep. Magaziner spoke forcefully on the House Floor against Republican attempts to cut social security. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:36:13Z

The funding will support water quality monitoring and public notification programs for beaches. At an event held at the Goddard Memorial State Park Beach in Warwick, Rhode Island today, EPA Deputy Regional Administrator Karen McGuire spotlighted the positive power this funding provides for the state of Rhode Island. "On summer days, everyone deserves clean safe beaches. The funding announced today ensures beachgoers know when waters are safe for swimming and recreation at Goddard Memorial State Park Beach and beaches along Rhode Island's coast." said EPA New England Deputy Regional Administrator Karen McGuire. "The BEACH Act grant provides critical information about the health of our waters which is especially important to Rhode Islanders who depend on them.” “Clean, safe beaches are essential to both our economy and public health. I helped support, pass, and fund the BEACH Act because it helps states and local communities team up to protect swimmers and our waters by collecting, testing, and posting water quality sample results.
