Governor Edwards has always been extraordinary not only for all that he has accomplished but the way in which he did so. He had an ever-warm spirit that was infectious for the way that he showed concern and care for so many of us in the Lowcountry and across the state, and in that regard, he will be particularly missed. My prayers and thoughts go to Ann and the family. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

"My thoughts and prayers go out to Anne and Governor Edwards' entire family. Jim was an early mentor of mine as I entered public service, and I am forever thankful for his advice and encouragement. From the dedication of Patriot's Point during his time as Governor to his efforts expanding MUSC while serving as President, Governor Edwards has left an important legacy in our state. No matter if he was serving as a Cabinet member for President Reagan or on a board for President George H.W. Bush, we always knew that Jim's heart was here at home with the people of South Carolina." "There are multiple efforts in the United Nations Security Council to set parameters for final status negotiations, effectively imposing terms on our ally Israel in matters that are vital to its security and national interests," wrote Graham and Schumer. "We strongly urge you to make clear to all parties that the United States strongly opposes, and if need be will veto, any effort to bypass direct negotiations and impose peace terms on Israel through the United Nations. "A failure to decisively announce that we will veto any resolution from the United Nations that dictates the peace process runs counter to decades of American foreign policy and only gives momentum to these counterproductive proposals," concluded the senators. The text of the letter is below. ##### Dear Secretary Kerry: We write to express concern about ongoing efforts to impose the terms of a peace agreement on our friend and ally Israel outside of direct negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians. We urge you to make clear that the United States will veto any United Nations resolution and would oppose any efforts to bypass direct negotiations and impose peace terms on Israel through the United Nations Security Council and other international bodies. For decades, the United States has consistently opposed efforts to bypass direct negotiations and impose terms on Israel through the United Nations Security Council. President Obama's statement today of ‘a new course in our relations with Cuba' is a complete reversal of U.S. policy without receiving any concrete reforms by the Cuban government, which is required by U.S. law.” “President Obama’s decision wastes decades of hard work to support the Cuban people, provides Cuba with legitimacy that ten American presidents have refused to provide, and strengthens the Castro regime to the detriment of the Cuban people and the region at-large. Worse still, the President’s intention to initiate a review of Cuba’s status as a ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism’ willfully turns a blind eye to Cuba’s very public record of directly facilitating terrorism and criminal activities, opposing freedom for the Cuban people, and enabling Iran, Russia, North Korea, and China’s activities in the Western Hemisphere.” “The President must follow U.S. law with any policy or regulatory changes toward Cuba, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs to require accountability from this Administration on this issue.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I wanted to send you an e-mail to give you an update on some things going on inside of DC: Immigration: I believe what the Administration has done is unprecedented, unconstitutional, and an affront to the American people. In addition to poisoning the well and making it almost impossible to work together on other issues, I believe the Administration’s actions have created a constitutional crisis that our Founding Fathers had hoped to avoid. Presidents cannot create law. Regardless of how one feels about this issue or any other, I believe that hopefully reasonable minds can come together and agree that the precedent set by this Administration is dangerous. I am fighting hard to make sure that Congress uses the power of the purse to stop this in its tracks. CRomnibus: While the spending bill contained several good reforms, I believe it didn’t address the fact that this Administration has taken extraordinary steps to violate both the Constitution of the United States and our separation of powers. For this reason, I voted against the legislation. I believe it simply did not do enough to stop the Administration’s executive action. Congress will have an opportunity to reevaluate the funding for the Administration’s executive order when funding for the Department of Homeland Security expires in February. Field Hearing: Recently, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency, part of the Committee on Homeland Security held a hearing on the campus of Clemson University. The hearing focused on challenges local communities face concerning emergency preparedness. We heard from some of the most qualified officials spanning from academia to law enforcement. Thanks to all of the participants, especially the law enforcement community who put their lives on the line every day to… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
| http://sanford.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/rep-sanford-issues-statement-on-cuba | SANFORD ISSUES STATEMENT ON CUBA | 2014-12-17 | 2014 | 2014-12 | Republican | House | SC | Mark Sanford | S000051 | sanford.house.gov | legacy | WASHINGTON, DC Today, Congressman Mark Sanford released the following statement regarding the Presidents move toward normalizing relations with Cuba. Though I have been a critic of many of the Presidents actions, I think it is important to give credit where credit is due. Accordingly, I am encouraged by the Presidents move today to ease restrictions for Americans wanting to travel to Cuba and the promise of efforts to begin a dialogue with the people of Cuba. Unlike many of his recent actions with regard to Presidential authority that I have worked hard with others to counter, this one is actually clearly within the scope of his authority as President. Furthermore, Cuba travel policy was inconsistent with our countrys founding principle of individual liberty and the freedom of movement that should come with it. In fact, with the exception of Cuba, we are allowed to travel to any country in the world. Think about that. Americans could travel to Iran, North Korea, or Syria, but not Cuba fifty miles off our coast. The move toward diplomatic conversation and a United States Embassy in Cuba is both wise and a statement of the obvious, as the U.S. Interests Section in Havana has long been one of the busiest of State Department facilities in the Western Hemisphere. I will be introducing a bill with Democratic and Republican colleagues at the beginning of the next Congress that mirrors a similar bill Jeff Flake is advancing in the Senate. It preserves the right of Americans to travel to Cuba, regardless of who occupies the White House. This is important because actions similar to todays (to relax travel restrictions) were taken in the 1970s by President Carter and quickly removed when President Reagan took office. Since the 1990s, with legislation I offered then, I have been an advocate for preserving Americans constitutional rights to travel freely. This is a step in the right direction, and in that regard, I credit the President. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | ||

"I am certainly happy that Alan Gross has come home to his family. His imprisonment in Cuba for the past five years is yet another example of the dangers of the authoritarian regime in Havana. However, I am also very concerned that the President has decided to reward Cuba for decades of human rights abuses, weapons trafficking, espionage and other abuses. Not only are three Cuban spies, one of which was convicted of murder, being returned to Havana, but with the Castro family still holding absolute power in Cuba we cannot trust that loosening travel restrictions and economic sanctions will do anything but line the pockets of the regime. These actions will do nothing to increase the freedom and liberty the Cuban people deserve. Unfortunately, this is yet another example of this administration continuing to show the rest of the world, and dangerous leaders like those in Iran and North Korea, that the United States is willing to appease them." ### Print Email Tweet Next Article | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

As I’ve said before, the President’s actions are unprecedented, unconstitutional, and violation of our rule of law. We have a responsibility as Members of the legislative branch to protect the Constitution of the United States. I sincerely believe that voters were loud and clear that they wanted Republicans to act boldly against the President’s unlawful unilateral actions. This legislation failed to stop this unconstitutional encroachment, and that is why I urged the Republican Leadership in the House to adopt defunding language for executive amnesty to the spending bill. I voted against the legislation because it did not do enough to stop the President’s executive actions and honor the will of the voters.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Scott also keeps his assignments to the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, and Committee on Aging. Scott becomes the first Senator from South Carolina to sit on the Finance Committee since Senator James Hammond in 1861. "I am excited to join both the Finance and Banking Committees for the 114th Congress, and to continue my work on the HELP, Small Business and Aging Committees," Senator Scott said. "These committees will help me serve the people of South Carolina on a wide variety of issues, and provide a strong foundation to continue my Growth and Opportunity Agenda focused on job creation, education and economic growth." The Committee on Finance concerns itself with matters relating to: taxation and other revenue measures generally, and those relating to the insular possessions; bonded debt of the United States; customs, collection districts, and ports of entry and delivery; reciprocal trade agreements; tariff and import quotas, and related matters thereto; the transportation of dutiable goods; deposit of public moneys; general revenue sharing; health programs under the Social Security Act, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) and other health and human services programs financed by a specific tax or trust fund; and national social security. The newly finalized rule will allow as few as 10 days to pass between employees filing a petition to unionize and a vote occurring; currently the median time passed is 38 days. "Today's rule issued by the NLRB is perhaps the most pro-union action taken by the current administration, which is quite a feat in itself," Senator Scott said. "Ambush elections hurt the ability of employees to make a well-informed choice on joining a union, as it gives limited time to hear both sides of the debate. The rule also requires an unprecedented amount of an employee's personal information to be given to union representatives, such as personal cell phones and email addresses." Senator Scott continued, "The NLRB is also now placing burdensome requirements on employers that unions do not themselves have to comply with, providing an unfair advantage to union organizers. In South Carolina we have seen the potential ramifications that come as the result of a wildly partisan NLRB, and today's rule simply reinforces the fact that the board must return to acting as the neutral arbiter it was intended to be." Earlier this year, Senator Scott joined Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) to introduce the Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act, which would require 35 days to pass between the time employees file a petition to unionize and a vote is held. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Scott introduced legislation, the Employee Rights Act, which would require 40 days to pass. He is also a cosponsor of the National Labor Relations Board Reform Act, introduced earlier this year, which would reform the structure of the board. Res.772, the Uphold the Oath Americans Trust and Honor (OATH) Resolution. This legislation would authorize legal action against the Administration for President Obama’s latest immigration overreach. “Article I, Section 8, Clause 4 of the Constitution grants Congress the responsibility to craft our country’s immigration laws,” said Congressman Rice. “Furthermore, Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution states that the President shall take care that our nation’s laws are faithfully executed. President Obama has acknowledged these roles and took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. Instead of upholding this oath, the President has repeatedly chosen to ignore it.” “Today I introduced a resolution that directs the House of Representatives to authorize legal action against the Obama Administration for implementing unilateral changes to our immigration laws,” Rice continued. “This resolution will restore legislative order and force the President to govern within his authority.” The Uphold the OATH Resolution is similar to Congressman Rice’s Stop This Overreaching Presidency (STOP) Resolution, H. Res.442, introduced last December. The House of Representatives voted on a similar version of the STOP Resolution this summer and filed a lawsuit against the Obama Administration for unilaterally changing Obamacare last month. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

"Mr. Carter has a wealth of experience that I hope will lead to solid decision making and long-term strategic thinking. I look forward to learning more about his ideas and abilities through the confirmation process. However, it does not matter how qualified a nominee is for Secretary of Defense if the White House will not engage them in decision making. The new Secretary must be empowered to develop a cohesive long-term plan to combat threats such as ISIS. America cannot continue to lead from behind on issues of national security at home and abroad, and this administration needs to let experts, not politics, drive our policies." ### Print Email Tweet Next Article | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The bill my colleagues and I passed today guarantees that our military has the resources it needs to keep us safe. Furthermore, this legislation prevents the transfer of any National Guard Apache Helicopters in fiscal year 2015, ensuring that the South Carolina Apache fleet remains in our state for another year.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

As the nation’s first Defense Secretary to be an enlisted combat veteran, Mr. Hagel brought a unique and important perspective to the Department." "Just under a year ago, President Obama compared ISIS to a JV basketball team. Now ISIS represents one of the greatest threats in the Middle East and a major concern across the globe. The lack of vision from the White House on national security matters has been astonishing, and I am hopeful that the next Secretary of Defense will have the boldness and expertise to correct some of the Administration’s shortsightedness. I urge my Senate colleagues to hold a rigorous confirmation process for Secretary Hagel’s successor in order to ensure that our military is managed by a highly capable leader who will listen closely to the advice of our military commanders." ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Senator Scott supported the passage of WRRDA earlier this year, and the harbor maintenance funding is utilized to dredge and maintain America’s ports, including the ports in Charleston and Georgetown. The Senators wrote, “More than $1.8 billion in annual HMT revenue is being collected specifically to meet the nation’s annual authorized harbor maintenance needs for harbors of all sizes. Unfortunately, annual appropriations have been significantly less than annual collections, resulting in harbors and navigation channels getting narrower and shallower due to accumulating sediment, declining dredged material disposal area capacity and deteriorating harbor structures such as breakwaters and jetties due to inadequate funding. Harbors and navigation channels are a vital part of our nation’s transportation infrastructure, and the elimination or reduction in their capacity can have significant impacts on local communities and economies as well as the national economy.” Also signing the letter were Senators David Vitter (R-LA), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Al Franken (D-MN), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Bill Nelson (R-FL), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Jim Risch (R-ID), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), John Cornyn (R-TX), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). "Nationally, these new regulations could cost $270 billion per year and jeopardize millions of jobs as our economy continues to recover. In South Carolina alone, the new regulations could cost over 37,000 jobs per year and more than $41 billion over time. "Affordability for families and businesses need to be at the center of all new policies by the EPA, but sadly it is not. The EPA must immediately reconsider their current course and work to better balance our country's environmental protection with our economic growth." In addition to poisoning the well and making it almost impossible to work together on other issues, the President’s actions have created a constitutional crisis that our Founding Fathers had hoped to avoid. Presidents cannot make law on their own. Regardless of how one feels about this issue or any other, I would hope that we could all come together and agree that the precedent set by this President is dangerous." "My oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States is clear. It requires me to use every power at my disposal to make sure this type of action is stopped, condemned, and prevented from ever happening again. One of the most important and effective ways Congress can stop this is by blocking funding. Federalist 58 states, ‘This power over the purse may, in fact, be regarded as the most complete and effectual weapon with which any constitution can arm the immediate representatives of the people, for obtaining a redress of every grievance, and for carrying into effect every just and salutary measure.’ It is the prerogative of Congress to deny funding to Executive proposals in which they believe are unconstitutional or damaging to the country. Presidents have frequently signed legislation that contained such funding restrictions. Democrats such as Senator Carl Levin of Michigan have reaffirmed that restricting funding is a proper role of the legislative branch by stating it ‘(is) not bringing down the government. (It’s) a fairly traditional, targeted approach to make a policy point." "The President’s actions seem to have more to do with politics than policy. The President’s not considering the fact that he’s hurting Americans from all walks of life who are still struggling to find jobs. As federal and state officials continue to examine all the facts surrounding this tragedy and the subsequent events, I encourage the public to allow a thoughtful and thorough search for justice and truth for the Brown family and the community of Ferguson. Each investigation and inquiry must be allowed to run its full course and do so without leaks or an attempt by one side or another to skew the public’s opinion. “I encourage all people concerned about the death of Michael Brown and the events in Ferguson to channel their frustration, hurt and anger into productive, meaningful ways to build our communities, no matter where we live. Earlier this evening, Michael Brown’s parents - Michael Brown, Sr. and Lesley McSpadden - respectfully requested that those who seek to have their voices heard, do so peacefully and without violence. I stand with them in that request, because it is time to rebuild and restore the Ferguson community, and others, which have been so hurt by these events. On Wednesday, November 19, Sen. Scott joined his Republican colleagues in a letter to President Obama expressing their concerns with the negotiations and the administration’s apparent attempt to circumvent Congress on sanctions relief despite previous pledges to follow the law and work with Congress. “Every time President Obama and Secretary Kerry fail to meet deadlines in Iranian nuclear negotiations, we learn of more concessions given to Iran and are less certain that a deal will end Iran’s nuclear ambitions. This is absolutely unacceptable and will only make Americans less safe and endanger our friends and allies abroad. Iran is a recognized state sponsor of terror and one of the most dangerous actors in the world. The Obama administration cannot break the law and circumvent Congress to lift Iranian sanctions—the one tool that has actually proven to work in hindering Iran’s quest for a nuclear weapon. President Obama’s recent actions that circumvent Congress and the rule of law are extremely reckless and create greater risk and insecurity for America. President Obama needs to end his Congressional runaround and work with Congress to end Iran’s nuclear threat." ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Tom Rice says everything he hears from the Army Corps of Engineers about the Georgetown port is positive and he is hoping for a decision any day about federal funds for dredging. Officials in the Corps’ Charleston District said last week they had no funds for Georgetown in their budget and they worried that dredging the harbor to a depth of 27 feet before customers are on board at the port would be a waste of state and county money. Rice said Wednesday that Georgetown County voters’ approval of a one-cent sales tax that designates $6 million for harbor dredging supports his case that a viable port will bring industry to his district. The state has proposed spending $18 million and the State Ports Authority $5 million to dredge at Georgetown in addition to the county’s $6 million. Rice is trying to get the Corps of Engineers to pay $4 million of the project cost, estimated at $33 million two years ago. Charleston District officials said the cost to dredge the Georgetown harbor will be higher because silt continues to accumulate. “There’s a little room for adjustment,” Rice said of federal funding for Georgetown. “I think the state and county have certainly shown their belief in the merit of the project.” Rice said Rep. Bill Shuster, chairman of the House Infrastructure Committee, was impressed with Georgetown’s argument for funding. “We feel good about it,” Rice said, “but they haven’t made their decision yet. They’ve gone past the time they told us it would take.” The Corps may have been working off the assumption that Congress would pass an appropriations measure by Sept. 30, a source familiar with the process said. Funding might depend on when Congress passes an appropriations bill. That could come before the present bill expires Dec. 11 or could be delayed until next year by a continuing resolution. House leadership has said it wants to pass an appropriations bill before Dec. 11, but some members of Congress want to delay until Republicans take control of the Senate. Through an unconstitutional change in our nation's laws, President Obama has ignored the Constitutionally-mandated separation of powers again. Instead of deepening the dysfunction of a broken immigration system, I implore President Obama to reconsider his course, and learn to work with Congress.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Trey Gowdy (R-SC), chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security, released this statement following the announcement of the President’s executive action on immigration: “The thread that holds the tapestry of our country together is respect for and adherence to the rule of law. The law is our greatest unifier and our greatest equalizer. Attempts to undermine the law via executive fiat, regardless of motivation, are dangerous. President Obama may seek a fight with Republicans in Congress, but in reality he is fighting with founders of this republic and the carefully crafted separation of powers. “Whether previous administrations acted outside of constitutional boundaries is not license to do the same. The President himself recognized his inability to do what he just did - 22 separate times. This action is not only detrimental to any chance in the new Congress for a sustainable, long-term solution on immigration, but also to the bedrock of our system of government— respect for the rule of law. “When the executive branch acts outside of constitutional boundaries the legislative branch must use all powers afforded it to respond and restore the constitutional equilibrium. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. Rather, it should hasten the resolve of all Americans to make certain her elected officials honor the foundational document they swore to protect and defend.” ### f t # e | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Unfortunately, he has now decided that politics trump that fact. This short-sighted view and these ill-advised actions will unfortunately have a host of unintended, negative consequences on an already strained immigration system. Attempting to justify his actions by harkening back to the 1986 immigration reform package is flat wrong - and ignores the fact that almost 30 years after 1986 our immigration system is more broken than ever. While the President has decided once again that separation of powers only matters when it is beneficial to him, I sincerely hope he will reconsider these actions as we continue to look for solutions. The process must begin with securing our borders and fixing our legal immigration system, and I stand ready to work on those issues anytime. America is both a compassionate nation and a nation of laws, and to keep that balance the White House must work with Congress, not, as the old phrase goes, take their ball and go home. Together, we can address the current issues with targeted, responsible efforts that secure the border, enforce existing U.S. laws, and create a workable, efficient system for future immigrants." According to a news release, the scam involves a call to the customer telling them that they're late on their utility bill or might need a new meter, and that their electric service will be cut off if they don't pay immediately. The scammer then instructs the customer to purchase a prepaid debit card and tells them to call back with the numbers on the card. Representatives from SCE&G, Duke Energy, Santee Cooper and The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, as well as S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson and S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs Administrator Carri Grube Lybarker will hold a news conference on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. to go over more details of this scam. The conference aims to give people more information about scam warning signs so that people will be "more aware and better prepared to protect themselves especially during the upcoming holiday season," the release said. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Their opposition to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs continues to amaze, and six years of stalling and delaying must come to an end. While we all agree our energy policy should promote sustainable, accessible and affordable sources of energy – decision-makers too often forget the affordable piece. The fact of the matter is if your income is under $30,000, 25 percent of your income goes towards energy consumption. This is an incredible burden to place on single parents and low-income families struggling to make their ends meet. Keystone provides opportunity not only to address that issue in the broader topic of energy, but to specifically address issues faced by millions and millions of Americans – unemployment and energy poverty. While Senate Democrats unfortunately once again ignored these facts, I look forward to tackling this issue in the Republican majority next year.” Senator Scott released a white paper on energy poverty earlier this year with Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who is expected to serve as Chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee beginning next year. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The amendment nullifies attempts by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to limit the options parents and states have in regards to Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) funds. Senator Scott’s amendment, originally passed in March of this year, would clarify that the CCDBG Act does not favor or promote the use of grants or contracts over the use of child care certificates or vouchers, nor does it adversely impact the use of certificates in faith-based or other settings. The most recent HHS data, from 2011, shows that South Carolina uses only certificates to supply care to families in South Carolina under the CCDBG program. “I am very pleased that my amendment was accepted as part of the overall bill, and look forward to the President signing it into law as soon as possible” Scott said. “My amendment was necessary to ensure parents keep the options they have today in regards to caring for a most important part of their lives – their kids. ” S. 1086 reauthorizes the CCDBG program, originally established in 1990 with a primary goal “to promote parental choice to empower working parents to make their own decisions on the child care that best suits their family’s needs.” The last reauthorization was in 1996 as part of the welfare reform act and expired in 2002. CCDBG is the primary source of federal funding for child care services, providing block grants to states for child care subsidies for low-income, working families. States currently have the flexibility to provide for the payment of child care services through certificates, grants or contracts, and nationally 90 percent are awarded as vouchers. However, HHS proposed a rule to increase the use of grants and contracts over certificates, limiting parental choice in child care. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I am especially pleased with the President’s decision to award a medal to professional golfer Charlie Sifford, the first African American player on the PGA Tour. Last July, I organized a bipartisan letter with 64 signatures encouraging the President to consider Mr. Sifford for this honor. Referring to Mr. Sifford as ‘the Jackie Robinson of golf,’ we wrote: The courage of Charlie Sifford opened the gates of golf to people of color across the world. While no award can restore the right of an athlete to compete that was unjustly denied decades ago, bestowing a Presidential Medal of Freedom upon him would rightly remember this injustice and extol the attributes of determination and persistence that enabled him to ultimately prevail. “It is fitting that Mr. Sifford is being recognized alongside such luminaries as John Dingell and the late Patsy Takemoto Mink, whom I have had the privilege of serving with in Congress; Steve Wonder, who has used his immense musical talent to promote civil rights; and James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, who gave their lives, during the “turbulent sixties,” fighting for the rights of all Americans to participate in our democracy. I thank each of them and all of the recipients for their remarkable contributions to our pursuit of ‘a more perfect Union.’” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I thank each of them and all of the recipients for their remarkable contributions to our pursuit of ‘a more perfect Union.’” | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T22:43:56Z |

The 19.6 million men and women that have worn our nation's uniform for the cause of freedom deserve our gratitude daily, but today we pause to honor them as a country, a practice that America has done since 1919 "As home to nearly 400,000 veterans, South Carolina is very proud of our veterans community. "Today, we also recognize the families and communities that stood with and by our veterans while they served. And with the greatest respect, we also remember those soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. "As we reflect on our veterans and their families today, we must continue to fight to end the VA claims backlog, protect veterans' pension cuts, increase accountability at the VA and allow our veterans improved access to care both inside and outside of the VA system. The Internet is open and free today thanks to the U.S. Congress having enough sense to leave a good thing alone, despite President Obama's repeated attempts to 'fix' something that is not broken by imposing onerous government red-tape and regulations. "Thankfully, federal courts have twice upheld current law by striking down President Obama's ill-advised attempts to regulate the Internet. The Communications Act is in dire need of an update, but President Obama should not again attempt to circumvent Congress and shove a square peg in a round hole with another unilateral action that violates Congressional intent. "I urge President Obama to stop this Congressional end around now and work with us on reasonable updates to the Communications Act that preserve Internet freedom." ### Related Issues: Print Email Tweet Next Article | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Dear Democratic Colleague, Congratulations! I am looking forward to serving with you in the 114th Congress. While I wish our numbers were greater, we must use the election results as motivation to redouble our efforts to create an America where hard work is rewarded and every American has an opportunity to succeed. I am more determined than ever to succeed in this fight, and in that spirit, I ask for your support of my continued service as Assistant Democratic Leader. To successfully advance a progressive agenda in a Republican-controlled Congress, our Caucus needs to be united. The history of our nation shows that unity is very challenging but can also be very rewarding, especially when a group as diverse as our Caucus works together in pursuit of common goals. Because of my record in current and previous Leadership positions, I feel uniquely qualified and well positioned to help our seven internal caucuses find common ground and present a united front in pursuit of greater opportunities and fundamental fairness for hard-working Americans. The facility had previously been set to close on November 30. "Losing theAir FacilityCharleston and its search-and-rescue helicopter would have serious implications on one of our nation's critical port cities and adversely impact the safety of mariners, residents and tourists in the region. Admiral Zukunft's commitment to delay closure of this important facility until at least December 15th is positive news for the Lowcountry," said Senator Scott. "With this extra time, it's my hope that the Coast Guard will look closely at the safety and economic benefits of the facility to South Carolinians and those in the region. I will continue to work closely with our Congressional delegation and the Coast Guard to explore options that will keep theAir FacilityCharleston operational." "Closing theAir FacilityCharleston will mean that the closest Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter will be almost 80 miles away," said Graham. "And when it comes to rescue missions, seconds and minutes are literally the difference between life and death. I'm hopeful the extra time will allow Congress to find the necessary funds to continue operation of this critical facility." The National Strategic Agenda, with specific policy proposals to address each of the four goals, will be developed over the course of the next year through working groups and meetings all over the country with elected officials and policy experts, business and community leaders, and citizens. No Labels will be developing the Agenda in partnership with Deloitte Consulting LLP, a worldwide leader in strategy consulting. Rep. Rice will be among those participating in the process. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) - 10/21/14 Recently, we have seen a hydra of terrorist organizations wreak havoc around the world. ISIS continues to destabilize the Middle East and has ambitions to expand globally. Al Qaeda recently expanded its operations to India and had plans to attack a U.S. aircraft carrier on 9/11. Boko Haram kidnapped 50 more women in Nigeria and continues pursuing an Islamic caliphate in Africa. Only a year ago, Al Shabaab attacked Westgate Mall in Kenya, and Hezbollah attempted several assassinations around the world. Such an uptick in terrorism was reflected in an April report published by the State Department, which found terrorist attacks had increased 40 percent worldwide since 2013. As the Obama administration stumbles its way toward a strategy to confront ISIS, some have suggested that the US could try to enlist help from Iran to combat this threat. Specifically, Secretary of State John Kerry said on September 19 that “there is a role for nearly every country in the world to play, including Iran.” This would be a monumentally bad decision. Iran is one of the world’s leading sponsors of terrorism and has directly enabled groups like Hezbollah and Al Qaeda to flourish. Additionally, it also continues its march towards nuclear weapons and its attempts to shift the balance of power in Iraq and Syria to its favor. Iran has deeply engaged in Latin America, and its presence and networks have the potential to directly threaten the U.S. homeland. Iran has a record of terrorism in our hemisphere. Iran sponsored car bombings in Buenos Aires, Argentina of the Israeli embassy in 1992 and the AMIA Jewish community center in 1994. Iran has also plotted terrorism on American soil, such as the 2007 attempt to blow up the JFK airport in Queens, NY, and the 2011 attempted assassination of the Saudi ambassador in Washington, DC. Michael McCaul, and other Committee members calling on U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and U.S. Department of State Secretary John Kerry to temporarily suspend travel visas for individuals traveling from areas of West Africa impacted by the Ebola virus until the outbreak is under control. Congressman Duncan has also previously advocated for adopting quarantine protocols for any persons traveling into the United States from West Africa. Below is the text of the letter sent to Secretaries Johnson and Kerry outlining the request. October 15, 2014 The Honorable Jeh Johnson Secretary U.S. Department of Homeland Security Nebraska Avenue Center Washington, DC 20528 The Honorable John Kerry Secretary U.S. Department of State 2201 C Street NW Washington, DC 20520 Dear Secretaries Johnson and Kerry, We write today concerning the urgent need to contain the Ebola Virus. While we understand significant efforts are underway to screen travelers at the point of exit leaving West Africa, as well as recently established procedures established at five ports of entry in the United States, we believe additional steps should be considered to curtail the potential spread of Ebola to the United States. Last week, the Committee on Homeland Security held a field hearing in Dallas, Texas, where we received testimony from Federal, State and local officials on the government’s current response to the recent Ebola cases in Texas. While we remain confident in CBP’s ability to adequately screen individuals with overt signs of disease, given the virus’s long incubation period of up to 21 days, individuals carrying the virus may not show symptoms when they leave West Africa or upon entry in the United States. As was the case with Thomas Eric Duncan, th… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Senator Scott is a member of both the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committees. “First and foremost, my heart goes out to those infected with Ebola and their families both in the United States and in West Africa. This is a terrible virus, and one the world must come together to stop. As infections continue to spread here in the United States, the trust of the American people has been shaken by the administration’s response thus far. It is clear that a temporary travel ban for foreign nationals traveling from Ebola-stricken nations in West Africa should be put in place. The President has the authority to do so, and we have seen that airport screenings and self-reporting simply are not enough. While both the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health state that patients without a fever are not contagious, recent studies from West Africa show that almost 13 percent of confirmed cases did not present with a fever. Screenings have also only been initiated at five airports, and even at airports travelers’ symptoms can be masked by over-the-counter medications. This is about the safety of the American people, and nothing more. As the fight against Ebola continues, a temporary travel ban for foreign nationals traveling from the epicenter of the outbreak is a necessity.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Some major business leaders, however, voiced concern over filling jobs because of a lacking skilled labor force. “My goal is to give skills to the people that are already here,’ Rice said. “We have a workforce that has suffered from industry from leaving our shores. Thank goodness we have facilities like the one we’re standing in right now, SiMT. Admittedly we have not kept up, but we’re ramping up.” The French yacht builder Beneteau has called Marion its home away from home since 1986, when it located its first U.S. production facility outside of the country and in the Pee Dee, an area with the feel of rural France that was on the Eastern Seaboard, near an Interstate highway, between New York and Miami, executives said. However, senior level supervisor Rick Pease said in a presentation that a skilled labor force is one of the company’s biggest challenges at the site. “From a business point of view, we’re getting competition from the rest of the world,” Rice said. “How can we compete when we do not see the top applicants of the pool? It takes up to 40 conversations to make one hire. We don’t see the competitive edge with these applicants. They may be passing the requirements to graduate, but they are not prepared to enter the workplace.” The luxury yacht company has churned out more than 8,000 yachts since opening and 250 boats in the past fiscal year at the Marion site where 167 full-time and temps are employed. “Big boats being a true luxury item, we were hit very hard with this Great Recession,” Pease said. “So it takes a long time for our business to recover, yet we feel that we are on a continually improving track.” Beneteau isn’t alone in finding quality talent in the area. We are talking about some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world, including planners of September 11th and the attack on the U.S.S. Cole. They should stay right where they are – in cells at the prison on Guantanamo Bay, far away from our schools and families. It is also outrageous that this administration is reportedly preparing to once again circumvent Congress for its own political goals. The President may be searching for a way to keep a campaign promise, but perhaps he should take a look at the reality of the situation. Recent polls show only 29 percent of Americans support transferring detainees to domestic locations, and Congress passed a bipartisan law barring the transfer of detainees to the United States. Chairman Jim Martin, who founded 60 Plus in 1992, commented, Jeff Duncan can be counted on to protect Social Security and Medicare, fight to repeal Obamacare and end the 'death tax.' As a trusted public servant, Jeff Duncan will continue to protect the pocket books of senior citizens and end the wasteful spending of our tax dollars, which has our government now borrowing over 40 cents of every dollar to pay its bills. Seniors have to live within their means and so should our government.” In a statement released by 60 Plus, Boone remarked, “I’m still singing at concerts, but today I’m singing the praises of Jeff Duncan. Seniors can depend on Jeff Duncan.” Boone, 80, and his wife of 60 years, Shirley, reside in Beverly Hills, California. Boone is familiar to audiences as a star of music, film and television. Boone has had 38 top-ten hits since his recording career began in the 1950s, and, according to Billboard magazine, still holds the record for the most consecutive weeks (220) on the charts by any performer. Martin added, Jeff Duncan is more than just a committed public servant with a distinguished track record of fighting on behalf of seniors in Washington; Jeff Duncan is a trusted voice for smaller, more effective and less expensive government. Jeff Duncan is a tireless worker who makes decisions every day based on what's best for our children and grandchildren. Seniors have no better friend in the U.S. House of Representatives than Congressman Jeff Duncan.” -30- | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The rating, which is based on every roll call vote affecting fiscal policy, assigns a “Taxpayer Score” to each Member of Congress that indicates his or her support for reducing or controlling federal spending, taxes, debt, and regulation. For 2013, a total of 253 House and 90 Senate votes were selected. “With so many remaining doubts that our economy has completely turned a corner, it's never been more important for Washington to change direction on fiscal policy. Senator Scott’s pro-taxpayer score of 96% was one of the best in the entire U.S. Senate,” NTU President Pete Sepp said. “Fortunately, the taxpayers of South Carolina could count on Senator Scott to help put our nation on a saner path. Day in and day out, Senator Scott earned the title of 'Taxpayers ' Friend.' For the first session of the 113th Congress, only 58 lawmakers were awarded the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award.” “I am pleased to be named a “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” for my time in the U.S. Senate,” said Senator Scott in receiving the honor. "I will continue working to reduce federal spending, lower taxes and repeal burdensome regulations so that every South Carolinian has the opportunity to succeed." It would also keep the general counsel from operating as an activist for one side or the other. "South Carolina has experienced firsthand what happens when the National Labor Relations Board tries to bully a state and I'm proud we fought back and won,” said U.S. Senator Tim Scott, a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. "The National Labor Relations Board Reform Act will go a long way toward stopping the ongoing partisan actions of the Obama Administration and the activist board. From their attempts to undermine secret ballots for union elections to the President’s unconstitutional play to stack the board with leftwing partisans that would side exclusively with big unions, the NLRB is out of control and must be changed now. Senator Scott continued, The “National Labor Relations Board Reform Act is a needed first step to putting the NLRB in its proper role as a neutral arbiter, an impartial and unbiased board protecting the rights of both employers and employees. By reforming the NRLB, we can continue to make it easier to get our economy back on track and allow more South Carolina workers to get back to good paying jobs.” The National Labor Relations Board Reform Act, introduced by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) a… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
