Graham attended the celebration and congratulated Nephron on this significant announcement. I truly enjoyed being a part of todays celebration as Lou and Bill Kennedy the owners and founders of Nephron Pharmaceuticals announced a five percent pay raise for employees as a direct result of the recent tax cut. This pay raise will increase the hourly workforces wage to fifteen dollars per hour and the average salary at Nephron to seventy thousand dollars per year. A five percent pay raise is real money to Nephrons employees. This tax cut will work. It benefits American business and American workers. The combined effect of a five percent pay raise, a tax cut for working people, and an increase in 401k value is the best evidence yet that President Trump and the Republican Congress are delivering for hardworking Americans. The tax cut, along with deregulating America, will continue to grow the economy, making American business more successful and helping working people earn and save. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) and a bipartisan group of 33 members of Congress have signed and sent a letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, asking him to consider the implications of government intervention on U.S. newspaper and commercial printing industries. Currently, there is a paper mill of 200 employees recently purchased by a Wall Street hedge fund petitioning for additional government interference and intervention in an industry, that as a whole, employs over 600,000 people nationwide. Congressman Norman has released the following statement: "Yet again, this is another example of one company trying to leverage government intervention to gain an unfair advantage. If these tariffs are put into place, over 600,000 jobs in an already declining industry would be put at risk or affected. Not only does this affect jobs, but also hurts all newspapers big and small. This especially threatens to put small newspapers out of business, essentially cutting off rural and small-town America from their local news. Free market principles should guide import levels, not businesses asking for a handout from the government. It is my hope that Secretary Ross seriously considers the ramifications this could have on paper producers and newspapers across the country. We have every right to locate our embassy in Jerusalem, and I support the commitment of President Donald Trump to move forward with these plans. To those who believe including Senate Republican leadership that in 2018 there will not be another effort to Repeal and Replace Obamacare -- you are sadly mistaken. By eliminating the individual mandate in the tax bill we have pulled one of the pillars of Obamacare out. But by no means has Obamacare been repealed or replaced. Obamacare is still the law of the land and will continue to crumble which will drive up insurance costs for hard-working Americans and eventually pave the path to single-payer health care. Im fully committed to Repealing and Replacing Obamacare in 2018 by block-granting the money back to the states and away from Washington bureaucrats who are completely unaccountable to the patients of America. To be successful we will need presidential leadership with the same passion to replace Obamacare as President Obama demonstrated in passing Obamacare. We will need House and Senate leaders on the Republican side as committed to repealing Obamacare as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were to passing it. I know that Republicans and the large group of middle of the road Americans are counting on the GOP to replace Obamacare with something that works better for them and their families. I look forward to working with President Trump, our House and Senate Republican leadership, and the private sector to make Repeal and Replace of Obamacare a reality in 2018. It will be a difficult task but failure is not an option. ##### NPR: McConnell Wants Bipartisanship In 2018 On Entitlements, Immigration And More | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, Congressman Jeff Duncan praised the House and Senate for passing sweeping tax reform for the American people: This is a historic day in America! A unified Congress has passed an overhaul of the tax code to finally give tax relief to individuals, families, and businesses across our nation. For far too long, the tax code has stifled innovation and investment, burdened Main Street, and kept individuals and families from getting ahead. The American people recognized this and spoke with a loud voice in November 2016. I am thrilled that the legislation is now on its way to the White House for President Trumps signature. This has been over 30 years in the making, and we are delivering on a key promise to the American people we are Making America Great Again! ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Im proud to support the biggest change to our tax code in over thirty years. This plan is good for working people across South Carolina. Whether its the store owner on Main Street, the farmer working their fields, or the assembly-line worker on the factory floor, South Carolinians are working harder than ever. They need a tax cut and deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money. We lower tax rates and double the child tax credit. We grow our economy and make it easier for American companies to create jobs in the United States. At the end of the day, this bill means more money in the pockets of hard-working South Carolinians. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The final bill will protect more of Americans money from being taxed, enhances significant credits like the Child Tax Credit, and maintains important features like the Earned Income Tax Credit, and deductions for mortgage interest and charitable contributions. From day one our priority has been simple: fix the broken tax code, and ensure the biggest winners from tax reform are our hardworking American families and our economy, said Scott. And thats exactly what we delivered. Folks will be able to keep more of their hard-earned money, families will get a big break through the enhanced Child Tax Credit, and our corporate tax rate will finally be at a competitive level that will help us create the jobs of the future right here in the USA. We also repealed Obamacares Individual Mandate, an unfair tax that overwhelmingly burdens our middle class families. After years of a stalled economy and stagnant wages, tax reform will help generate the type of economic growth we have been lacking. The last time the U.S. tax code was overhauled was more than thirty years ago. Already, the new legislation is expected to bring economic relief to workers and families, and is also forecasted to strengthen the U.S. economy. A recent study of theTax Cuts and Jobs Acthas predicted that the bill is set to boost our national GDP by 1.7 percent, will create tens of thousands of new jobs, and increase wages by 1.5 percent. Additionally, a typical family of four making $73,000 is expected to see about a $2,000 tax cut or 60 percent reduction, while single parents making around $41,000 will see about a $1,400 tax cut or 75 percent reduct… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This tax-scam bill represents a grotesque set of priorities revealing deep depravity of American values. One of the first principles of our Judeo/Christian value system is grounded in what we do “for the least of these.” From the outset, this bill violates that principle by lowering the marginal rates on the wealthiest among us by 2.6 points; while raising those rates on “the least among us” by 2 points. This tax-scam bill adds insult to that injurious act by doubling the estate tax exemption from $11 million to $22 million. The Republicans add further insult to injury by lowering the tax rates for corporations by 14 points while raising taxes on 86 million middle income families. It makes the tax cuts for corporations permanent and the miniscule individual cuts temporary, while also kicking 13 million people off their health insurance and increasing premiums for millions more. This tax scam caps deductions for state and local taxes, and home mortgages; and adds over $2 trillion dollars to the deficit. Our children and grandchildren will be left with the bill. Today, Congressman Jeff Duncan released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the House-Senate Conference Report on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act: We have moved one step closer to providing historic tax relief to the American people. Our nation has waited over 30 years for meaningful tax reform, and I am excited that we have accomplished another step in the legislative process today. This bill will make a huge impact on individuals, families, and companies in South Carolina, and now we need the Senate to move this process along by voting on the Conference Report. We are on the verge of unleashing the American dream for millions of people in this country. Its disheartening that the Democrats chose to sit on the sidelines throughout this process and attack a pro-growth, pro-family tax plan that is all about bigger paychecks, higher wages, more jobs, and smaller government. I stand committed to my constituents, South Carolina, and the nation, and I will continue to work on getting this tax reform package across the finish line. Lets finish the job! ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) has released the following statement after voting in favor to pass The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act: "American families, workers and job creators were given a much-deserved and much-needed tax relief today with the passage of The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. This tax reform bill is pro-family and pro-growth. Families and individuals at every income level will get a tax cut so that they can keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. A family of four making $73,000 a year will receive a tax cut of $2,059. The Child Tax Credit is expanded from $1,000 to $2,000, to help parents with the cost of raising children. This plan doubles the standard deduction for everyone Job creators will see a lower corporate tax rate at 21%, allowing us to be more globally competitive. The inclusion of an immediate expensing of capital investment will allow a farmer to purchase a tractor to expand operations or allow a mechanic to add a new bay to the shop. For the first time in 31 years, the House passed a comprehensive tax reform bill that breaks the status quo. I look forward to sending this bill to President Trumps desk before Christmas so that we can create jobs, increase paychecks, grow our economy, and improve lives. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Rice Votes for Tax Relief for American Families & Businesses | 2017-12-19 | 2017 | 2017-12 | Republican | House | SC | Tom Rice | R000597 | rice.house.gov | legacy | WASHINGTON Congressman Tom Rice (R-S.C.) today released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 1, theTax Cuts & Jobs Act. Today we voted for the most pro-growth tax policy in decades. Thirty years ago when our tax code and economic system were competitive, we were the worlds uncontested economic leader. But for decades weve sat by while the world has passed us by. The American Dream has been out of reach for far too long. There is an entire generation that has yet to experience true economic growth. TheTax Cuts & Jobs Actwill bolster our recent trend of economic growth, put more take-home pay back in the pockets of hardworking Americans, and restore opportunity for a generation of Americans. It will grow our middle class, it will reduce income disparity, and it will bring American jobs back. I look forward to the Senate passing this bill and to the President signing this historic legislative achievement into law. BACKGROUND As a member of the Ways & Means Committee, the chief tax-writing committee in Congress, Congressman Rice has had a seat at the table in helping craft theTax Cuts & Jobs Act. Estimates show that this plan will cause almost a 2% increase in GDP over the long term, creating an additional 339,000 new jobs. For Congressman Rices district specifically, this plan is estimated to provide a $1,458 tax cut for the typical family of four in the Grand Strand and the Pee Dee. | https://sanford.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/sanford-votes-for-tax-reform | Sanford Votes For Tax Reform | 2017-12-19 | 2017 | 2017-12 | Republican | House | SC | Mark Sanford | S000051 | sanford.house.gov | legacy | WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Representative Mark Sanford voted for H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which passed the House by a vote of 227 to 203. He released the following statement: Over the next 10 years, the federal government is projected to take in $43 trillion from American citizens. With the tax cut, that number will drop to $41.5 trillion, and that $1.5 trillion difference is indeed the cost of the bill. The question we all have to ask ourselves is whether or not you think our federal functions can work at $41.5 trillion instead of $43 trillion. Thats a 3.5% difference, and most folks I talk to at home believe that government could afford a 3.5% cut so that they as individuals, and the economy at large, could use and invest that money instead. A 3.5% cut hardly fits the hyperbole weve heard in this debate, which has been misleading from both sides. From a Democratic standpoint, you would think that the end of the world was coming to government services as a result of this tax bill. From a Republican standpoint, you would think that theyre cutting off the spigot in Washington, and that you and I will be keeping a much larger chunk of the money we earn. As Milton Friedman said, A reduction in taxes would have the same stimulative effect as an increase in spending, yet it would avoid the long-term adverse effect of increasing the role of government in the economy. Ive long said that the government that governs best governs least, and in that regard, it seems to me that the federal government can certainly find ways to trim its budget, so that taxpayers get to keep a bit more in their pockets. For a very comprehensive breakdown of the reasoning behind Representative Sanfords vote, please click here to find his vote explanation on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I am incredibly disappointed to see the Trump Administration continue to treat terrorists as common criminals. Giving Akayed Ullah a lawyer and putting him directly into the criminal justice system means we lose the ability to gather intelligence from a person who fits the profile of an enemy combatant. We couldnt possibly have gathered information on the multiple trips Ullah made to Bangladesh and other relevant activity in such a short period of time. Now that he has a lawyer, there will be no more intelligence gathering and everything will have to be done through plea bargaining. When it comes to the potential interrogation policies regarding terrorists, it is as if President Obama and his team never left. How many more attacks will it take before the Trump Administration embraces the fact that we are fighting a war, not a crime? The evidence against Ullah is so overwhelming, a first year law student could convict him. Our primary goal for terror suspects like Ullah should be to gather intelligence to ensure we prevent and disrupt future attacks. Only after all intelligence gathering is complete, should the suspect be turned over for trial. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Marco Rubio told reporters on Thursday that he would vote no on a tax overhaul bill without an expanded child tax credit, many congressional staffers, political observers and lawmakers from both parties thought the Florida Republican was blowing hot air, looking to appear as though he had leverage when he did not. There was also speculation that Rubio had, by the time he started making noise, already received assurances that his problems would be addressed. But behind the scenes, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was worried. An aide to a Senate Republican member of the tax conference committee told McClatchy that earlier in the week, days before Rubio publicly said he was on the fence about the legislation, Floridas junior senator paid a visit toMcConnell, a Kentucky Republican. Sen. Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina and a point person on final negotiations, accompanied them. In that meeting with McConnell and Scott, Rubio made his position clear. He would vote againstthetax bill unless there was an expanded child tax credit that would net low-earners using the child tax credit a larger IRS refund if they owe little or no taxes. If you dont fix this, Im no, the aide said Rubio told McConnell. And it was a very hard no. Rubios threats to vote against the tax bill were very real, and leadership took them seriously. A second source involved in the negotiations confirmed the meeting and Rubios position. Still, House and Senate negotiators were reluctant to address Rubios demands. They had already agreed to a final deal on all elements of the tax overhaul legislation, in principle, and didnt want to reopen negotiations. Scott, who had helped secure an initial expansion of the child tax credit from $1,000 to $2,000 while the bill was still being debated by the Senate Finance Committee, lobbied on Rubios behalf inside the conference committee. With this bill, we are helping single moms, like mine, by bolstering the Child Tax Credit and allowing more hardworking, everyday Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money. "I want to thank my colleagues both on the Senate Finance Committee and the Conference Committee who worked through the differences, and helped to create a final version of a tax bill that will, without question, produce amazing results. By this time next week, we are hopeful we will have a bill on the Presidents desk ready for signature, and in 2018, Americans will start to see the tangible benefits of this breakthrough agreement. The bill is expected to be voted on by both chambers of Congress, and will eventually land on the Presidents desk for final approval. I thank Chairman Pai for his leadership and transparency. For the first time in FCC history, the text of an order was made available to the public for three weeks before the vote. “The most pressing problem in the field of telecommunications is bridging the digital divide. To address this problem, and to reach unserved areas like those in South Carolina’s 5th District, billions of dollars in investment in rural broadband infrastructure is needed. Title II regulations have proved to be an investment killer – resulting in a $3.6 billion decline in broadband infrastructure investment. A return to the light touch regulatory framework that existed prior to 2015 will create the proper regulatory conditions to make these investments possible. “Ultimately, legislation is the only real solution to this problem. If Democrats in Congress are truly concerned with protecting the net neutrality principles that we agree on, then we should be at the table now working out a deal to put these important consumer protections into law.” Click image below to watch Congressman Norman’s video message: f t # e | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Res. 662, which recognizes Israel's sovereignty to choose its own capital, reaffirms the relationship between the United States and Israel, recognizes that Israel is the United States' strongest ally in the Middle East, and reiterates that the U.S. Congress strongly opposes the United Nations General Assembly's anti-Israel actions. "America's bond with Israel is unique, and its strength is the foundation of American leadership in the Middle East. The president's recent announcement that our embassy will be located in Jerusalem strengthens that bond. Recently, we have seen the United Nations General Assembly pass six anti-Israel resolutions. This is wrong. Israel has not only been our long-standing ally, but also is our strongest ally in the Middle East. "When we see the United Nations and members of the international community target Israel, bullying a country that is surrounded by those who would do it harm, we're going to – in the courageous words of Ambassador Nikki Haley – call them out. The people of Israel should know we have their back. "I am grateful for the leadership of President Donald Trump and Ambassador Nikki Haley, who have restored American leadership on the world's stage by renewing our commitment to peace through strength, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to recognize Israel as America's strongest ally in the Middle East and condemn the anti-Israeli defamation that has defined the United Nations in recent years." -###- | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-08T22:19:19Z |

Claudia Tenney (R-NY). The bill aims to ease the regulatory burden on interstate trucking by expanding a pilot program studying the safety implications of allowing 18- to 21-year-olds operate trucks across state lines. Rep. Sanford released the following statement: “By the end of the year, there will be a national driver shortage of about 50,000 in the trucking industry, and about 2,000 of those are in South Carolina. Indeed, this shortage could reach upwards of 175,000 empty driving positions as soon as 2024. And with more than 70 percent of consumer goods carried on our national highways, having such a big shortage will lead to obvious issues, like delivery delays and higher prices. “The current federal policy that places limits on who can enter the industry is inherently anti-competitive and could lead to even further shortages over time. The expansion of the pilot program to allow even more qualified candidates seems like a step in the right direction to me.” The bill seeks to build upon the pilot program put in place last year by a bill that passed Congress with bipartisan support, the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. This pilot program has been limited by the strict requirements that participants must be veterans between the ages of 18 to 21. The WHEEL Act would broaden the criteria for participation in the pilot program to allow commercial driver’s license holders age 18-21 who have a clean driving record and have received a certification of completion from a qualified training program to participate in the study. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Most notably, it provides our military personnel with a significant pay increase. It is great news when we can compensate our men and women in uniform for everything they do. I was also glad to see special emphasis on building up our missile defense programs, a crucial step to countering future global threats. And as someone who believes GITMO should remain operational in order to keep enemy combatants from returning to the battlefield, I was reassured to see the NDAA continues to keep these individuals from being transferred or released. All in all, today marks a good day for our military and a good day for our country. Print Email Tweet Next Article Previous Article | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The bill requires the Secretary of State of the United States to remove all diplomatic personnel from Cuba until federal investigations into the harmful attacks on U.S. Foreign Service Officers are complete. The congressman's bill was introduced after the Associated Press reported this week that: "Doctors treating the U.S. Embassy victims of mysterious, invisible attacks in Cuba have discovered brain abnormalities as they search for clues to explain the hearing, vision, balance and memory damage." (The Associated Press, 12/6/2017) "We must be able to ensure the safety of our men and women representing the nation overseas," said Congressman Wilson, a senior member of House Foreign Affairs. "In light of the health issues experienced by Americans in Havana, we should consider bringing home all U.S. diplomatic staff from Cuba until we know who committed these attacks and can ensure their safety." At least 20 diplomatic staff from the U.S. Embassy in Havana, and their families, reported a variety of injuries while working and living in Havana. The injuries sustained ranged from hearing loss to cognitive to balance issues and resulted in the evacuation of all non-essential personnel from the embassy and island. Investigators have suggested that these injuries resulted from the use of sonic-based weaponry throughout the U.S. diplomatic staff's time working at the embassy and staying in a hotel. In October, Congressman Wilson asked the U.S. State Department to investigate attacks on diplomats in Havana in a letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. "In light of these serious attacks on U.S. embassy staff, we urge the State Department to immediately investigate the incidents and figure out what is going on in Havana," he wrote. The Associated Press' latest story on the health impact of these Cuban attacks is available here, and information about Congressman Wilson's letter to Secretary Tillerson is available here. -###- | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-08T22:19:19Z |

The Conference Committee for tax reform will be charged with ironing out differences between the House and Senate versions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. "I want to thank the Majority Leader for the opportunity to continue working on our tax reform package that will help so many hardworking American families, Scott said. I have said from the beginning that my goal is to help families keep more of their paychecks at home, and to ensure that the jobs of the 21st century are created right here in America. I am confident we will accomplish these goals, and let those Americans who feel left behind know that we see and hear them. The American people havent seen true tax reform in more than 30 years, and I look forward to getting this once in a generation opportunity over the finish line and to the Presidents desk before Christmas. Earlier in the week, Majority Leader McConnell referred to Scott as one of the Core Four members working on tax reform, alongside Senators Rob Portman, Pat Toomey and John Thune. In addition to the Core Four, Chairmen Orrin Hatch, Mike Enzi and Lisa Murkowski, as well as Republican Whip John Cornyn were named to the Conference Committee. The Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Harassment Act of 2017 would void forced arbitration agreements that prevent sexual harassment survivors from getting the justice they deserve. Graham and Gillibrand were joined by Gretchen Carlson, who previously worked at Fox News Channel and left the network after enduring years of sexual harassment. The perpetrators used forced arbitration to institutionalize protections for sexual harassers and prevent survivors from discussing their cases and taking them to trial. Today, an estimated 60 million Americans are subject to forced arbitration clauses in their employment contracts. The bipartisan legislation would void forced arbitration agreements that require arbitration of sexual harassment and discrimination claims and allow survivors of sexual harassment or discrimination to seek justice, discuss their cases publicly, and eliminate institutional protection for harassers. “To expect change without pushing for change is unrealistic,” said Senator Graham. “This legislation takes off the table the ability of employers to mandate arbitration before claims even arise. Mandatory arbitration employment contracts put the employee at a severe disadvantage. I do not oppose arbitration -- if the parties willingly consent to the process. Ensuring that sexual harassment and assault claims cannot be negotiated away before they occur will create incentives to change the workplace environment, making it less hostile and more respectful.” “When a company has a forced arbitration policy, it means that if a worker is sexually harassed or sexually assaulted in the workplace, they are not allowed to go to court over it; instead, they have to go into a secret meeting with their employer and try to work out some kind of deal that really only protects the predator. Congressman Norman has released the following statement: "In the 5TH District of South Carolina, and across the nation as a whole, the solar industry is a major leader in creating economic growth and providing quality jobs. “The proposed tariffs would affect the entire industry and could have devastating effects on the solar industry as a whole and American families. It is predicted that these trade protections could cost South Carolina alone 7,000 jobs, with a nationwide impact of 88,000. “It is my hope that Ambassador Lightizer and the Trump Administration heavily consider what the proposed trade remedies could have on solar employers and workers nationwide. We need to focus on strengthening American competitiveness, increasing investments, and not risk tens of thousands of Americans their jobs.” View the entire letter here. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The U.S. military should order the family members of U.S. government and military personnel to leave South Korea. Speaking on CBS on Sunday, Graham suggested that "It’s crazy to send spouses and children to South Korea, given the provocation of North Korea. South Korea should be an unaccompanied tour." President Trump should listen to the Senator from South Carolina. First off, the threat of a new war on the Korean peninsula is significant. And after North Korea's unprecedented missile test, last week, Trump has only three options left. He can sanction China in order to pressure Xi Jinping to get Kim Jong Un to alter course; he can accept North Korea's nuclear-ballistic missile capability and the threat it poses to U.S. security, or he can use military force to end that program. The Russians might find it hilarious, but these options reflect a very real crisis. With more than 30,000 U.S. soldiers, airman, sailors, and Marines stationed in South Korea at bases near to the demilitarized zone, we must recognize that thousands of family members now at grave risk. The need to send civilians back to the U.S. isn't just about protecting their lives, it's about ensuring the U.S. and South Korea can rapidly defeat any North Korean aggression. After all, in the event of a sudden conflict, the U.S. military would be tasked with and tied down by the need to conduct a civilian evacuation. That means the military's transport planes, helicopters and warships could not be used to ferry supplies, personnel, and ordnance to the front line. That opportunity cost denies the military of its raison d'être: warfighting. Morale would suffer if family members were ordered home. (Indeed, the U.S. Army advertises its family amenities… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Scotts amendments are the bipartisan Family Self-Sufficiency Act, which will help families living in public housing build their savings and increase their earnings, as well as the bipartisan MOBILE Act, which makes it easier for poor and minority Americans to open a bank account instead of relying on payday lenders and pawnbrokers. I was proud to work with Chairman Crapo and my colleagues on the Banking Committee to pass this important bipartisan legislation, including my two amendments, Scott said. Both the Family Self-Sufficiency Act and the MOBILE Act will help hardworking Americans gain a foothold in our financial system, be it through simply being able to open a bank account or more efficiently growing their savings account. Scott continued, The Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act as a whole is a huge step forward for economic growth and job creation. Too many local communities are being held back by burdensome regulations on small financial institutions, and by providing regulatory relief we can help create jobs and stimulate growth. Community banks are often an invaluable tool for small businesses and local entrepreneurs, and it is critical we provide an environment where they can succeed. Im also pleased we developed important provisions protecting veterans, consumers and homeowners. I look forward to the entire Senate voting on this commonsense, bipartisan legislation! The bill would reform a secretive government spying program to better protect the constitutional rights of Americans. Rep. Sanford released the following statement: “Our Founding Fathers deliberately set up individual liberty and personal privacy as two of the hallmarks of the American experiment. But without active resistance, the normal course of things is for liberty and personal freedom to yield to the so-called good intentions of government. This bill is a win for liberty by working to lessen the risk of Americans having their privacy violated.” The bill would reform Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires on December 31, 2017. This law currently allows the government to compel American companies to assist in the warrantless surveillance of foreigners. This results in the collections of an unknown number of Americans’ private communications. The goal is to end warrantless, backdoor searches of Americans’ communications that are routinely swept up under a program designed to spy on foreign targets. Specifically, the bill would make several reforms, including those listed below: End the backdoor searches: Under current law, the government can conduct unlimited, warrantless searches through the data collected under Section 702 for private communications to, from, and about Americans. The bill requires a warrant for those searches. End reverse targeting: With no limits to the warrantless, backdoor searches of Americans, there are no checks in place to prevent “reverse targeting” of Americans communicating with foreign targets. The bill requires a warrant when a significant purpose of targeting foreigners is to collect the communications of Americans. Doubles the Child Tax Credit: The child tax credit is doubled from the current $1,000 to $2,000, and more parents are allowed to claim the credit. Lowers Tax Rates: Individual tax rates for middle-income Americans are reduced, which will help taxpayers keep even more of their hard-earned money. The passage of the tax reform plan marks a major milestone in finally reforming a tax code that hasnt been overhauled since 1986. The primary beneficiaries of the new plan are typical American families in the low and middle income brackets, who will see substantial decreases in their taxes. Scott said the following in response to the tax bill passing out of the Senate: This is a monumental moment that marks a clear win for the American people. This was always about finding an American solution for American families. It is about helping the average person in this country keep more of their hard-earned income. It makes sure single mothers - like my own who worked 16-hour days to take care of her family - get a better deal under our tax plan. We ensure small business owners, running mom and pop shops, have an easier time expanding and creating even more jobs right in their own communities. Our bill also makes sure the jobs of the future are created right here in America. Today, we are one step closer to starting the New Year off with a tax code that the American people both need and deserve. I want to thank Chairman Hatch, all of my colleagues on the Finance Committee, and my friends in the Senate for their work in helping produce such an important piece of legislation. Sen. Scott has had the opportunity to work alongside a number of his colleagues to shape and develop the Senates the tax bill. In those efforts he specifically advocated for the following aspects of the bill: Inclusion of Scotts the Investing in Opportunity Act (IIOA) The IIOA would provide an opportunity for U.S. investors to use a temporary capital gains deferral in exchange for investing the capital in distressed communities across the country. It is truly devastating that local authorities didn’t cooperate with federal immigration law and that a jury decided to acquit the immigrant who, after illegally reentering our country several times, shot Kate Steinle in San Francisco while walking with her father. Words can’t express how truly appalled I am at this decision. “It appears the jury was too concerned about being politically correct than delivering justice to an illegal immigrant who murdered an innocent woman. It doesn’t fit with the left’s narrative of open borders and shielding illegal immigrants from federal officials. “These actions reaffirm my belief that we need to fix our broken immigration system and build a wall on our southern border. I also believe the Senate needs to take swift action in passing Kate’s Law which passed the House earlier this summer. The bill was introduced by Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), and this legislation will bring more transparency to the congressional harassment claims process paid out under the Congressional Accountability Act and prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to pay future sexual harassment or sexual assault claims. There are currently 29 Republican and 13 Democrat cosponsors. Rep. Sanford released the following statement: “The law, as it currently stands, makes no sense. Taxpayer dollars should not be used as a congressional piggy bank to bail out Members of Congress and staff who have committed acts of sexual harassment or assault. That this has been swept under the rug and kept from the public - both the payments and the acts themselves - makes it even more egregious because it marginalizes the victims and acts to excuse the aggressors with little to no consequences. “This bill seems like an obvious and necessary step in fixing this law, and I’m grateful to join my colleagues in supporting this legislation.” The Congressional Accountability and Hush Fund Elimination Act will: Require disclosure within 30 calendar days of all settlement payments funded by taxpayers, the reason for the payment and the nature of the allegation, and the member of Congress or congressional staffer implicated in the matter. Prohibit the future use of taxpayer dollars to pay sexual harassment and sexual assault claims against members of Congress and staff. Prohibit members of Congress from using office budgets to camouflage payments. Require members of Congress and staff that have ever been named in a sexual harassment or sexual assault settlement paid for by taxpayers to reimburse the U.S. Treasury with interest. Any individual who received an award may make public statements about the claims notwithstanding the terms of a nondisclosure agreement, and nondisclosure agreements canno… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Enacting this legislation ought to be a first step toward affirming with one voice that there is absolutely no place for discrimination nor harassment of any kind in the halls of Congress. As a part of the tax bill, there's an Investing in Opportunity Act that I sponsored. My co-sponsors are Cory Booker, Senator Peters from MichiganDemocrat, Mike BennettDemocrat. There is a bipartisan coalition looking for ways to address the needs of the distressed communities, where 50 million Americans live. If we want to do the right thing, this is one of those opportunities." There are currently 52 million Americans living in distressed communities across the country, and trillions of dollars in unrealized capital gains sitting on the sidelines. The IIOA would provide an opportunity for U.S. investors to use a temporary capital gains referral in exchange for investing the capital in these communities. This public-private partnership will create new channels for investment that will grow jobs, inspire entrepreneurship, and improve the local economy for future generations. Republican co-sponsors include: Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Rob Portman (R-OH), and Todd Young (R-IN). Typical American families earning around $73,000 a year have a 60% cut. Single moms making $41,000 a year, a 75% cut. We nearly double the standard deduction for singles to $12,000, for single head of households to $18,000, [and] two income households to $24,000. We double the child tax credit. "North Korea – a regime that has threatened to strike the United States with nuclear weapons, tortured and murdered an American citizen and conducted assassinations inside of other countries – belongs on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. "I thank the president for demonstrating once again that strong and decisive leadership on the world's stage is what it takes to keep American families safe." As President Donald Trump addressed the South Korean National Assembly in Seoul two weeks ago, Congressman Joe Wilson introduced House Resolution 612 that recognizes the critical relationship that the United States and South Korea have forged since the formation of the Republic of Korea in 1948. The resolution reaffirms U.S. support for South Korean forces and reiterates that the U.S. presence in South Korea should not be discussed in any potential negotiation with North Korea. Earlier this year and prior to University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier's death, Congressman Wilson and Congressmen Adam Schiff introduced the bipartisan North Korea Travel Control Act, which would ban tourist travel to North Korea. Read about the bill Congressman Wilson and Congressman Schiff introduced here. Congressman Wilson recently led a delegation of House colleagues to South Korea. It is clear to me that President Trump wants to avoid a military conflict with North Korea. He’s shown he is more than willing to work with regional partners to solve this national security threat to the American homeland. “It’s equally clear that if economic and diplomatic pressure fails, President Trump would use military force – as a last resort – to protect the American homeland from the North Korean nuclear threat. After months of talking about tax cuts this year, the American people wanted to see members of Congress take action. That's exactly what Republicans have done. The ‘Tax Cuts & Jobs Act' makes the tax code simpler and fairer, allows hardworking taxpayers to keep more of the money they earn and gives small businesses more room to grow and create jobs. The IIOA incentivizes investment in economically distressed areas by allowing trillions of dollars in private capital to be used to encourage small businesses, support entrepreneurs, and to develop dilapidated properties in zip codes most in need of a resurgence. Scott was proud to have the support of several of his colleagues who were essential in advancing the IIOA to where it is today. Since I entered Congress, my goal was simple: create opportunity for everyday Americans wherever possible, said Scott. It is a passion because I grew up in a single-parent household, surrounded in poverty, with very little expectation that I would find my way to success. But I learned that opportunity can truly be the difference that changes the course of ones life. I know that when the IIOA is passed, when it actually reaches the people its intended to help, the results will be truly amazing because it will help everyday people in South Carolina and beyond build their way to a brighter future. Its time to give our middle class the boost they need following several years of job loss and economic distress, said Sen. Capito (R-WV).The Investing in Opportunity Act can help spur growth in these communities and level the playing field, creating new opportunity in West Virginia and other regions. Im pleased to see it included in the latest version of the Senates tax proposal. Our burdensome tax system has stifled innovation, punished middle class families and small business owners, and hindered us in the global economy. This bill is all about bigger paychecks, higher wages, more jobs, and less government in the way of American ingenuity. “We have achieved a critical step in the long process of overhauling our tax code. However, the work can’t stop here. We have continually seen bills become weaker or not make it across the finish line in the Senate. Although this may be a political victory in the House, the American people don’t win until President Trump signs the bill into law. The Senate must stay true to their word. “I will continue to keep my promises to my constituents and support President Trump with the conservative agenda. We must reinvigorate our economy, invest in our future, and unleash the American dream for each and every person in this great country. This bill will incentivize student recipients of the Pell Grant to graduate on time and save taxpayers money: "The taxpayer-friendly Pell for Performance Act will encourage students who receive the Pell Grant - a federally funded grant program - to graduate college in a timely manner,” said Rep. Norman. “Currently, the government provides over $30 billion a year in Pell Grant aid, and 46% of students who attend college receive the Pell Grant. In fact, nearly 40% of all students do not graduate on time. This legislation will ultimately save taxpayer dollars by holding Pell Grant recipients accountable for not graduating on time, rather than leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill. I look forward to working with my colleague, Rep. Rooney, to move this bill through the legislative process.” “This act will focus efforts of both colleges and students to complete their degrees in a timely manner as well as bring forth more bang for the taxpayer’s buck,” said Rep. Rooney. “It is important for Pell Grants to be accessible to students who need them, and are committed to graduating and joining the workforce.” f t # e | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today was a historic victory for middle-class families and small businesses in the 5th District of South Carolina. It is no secret that our tax code is broken. For the first time in 31 years, the House has passed a bill that overhauls our complex tax code. This tax reform bill will deliver more jobs, a fairer and simpler tax code, and bigger paychecks for American workers. “Our plan is pro-growth and pro-family. Under this legislation, South Carolina will see an additional 13,850 jobs created. Hard-working middle-class families in South Carolina will see an income increase of $2,391. We have increased the Child Tax Credit from $1,000 per child to $1,600 to help parents with the cost of raising children. The inclusion of an immediate expensing of capital investment will allow a farmer to purchase a tractor to expand operations or allow a mechanic to add a new bay to the shop. “After listening to people across the 5th District, I am committed to keeping my promise to pass a tax reform bill into law this year, and I look forward to President Trump signing a tax reform bill into law. Let’s work together to create jobs, increase paychecks, grow our economy, and improve lives.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Rice Votes for Tax Relief for American Families & Businesses | 2017-11-16 | 2017 | 2017-11 | Republican | House | SC | Tom Rice | R000597 | rice.house.gov | legacy | WASHINGTON Congressman Tom Rice (R-S.C.) today released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. The American Dream is what separates us from the rest of the world. With hard work and determination, you can improve your station in life and your children have the opportunity for a better life than yours. But over the years for many people in this country, the American Dream has been out of reach. Thirty years ago when our tax code and economic system were competitive, we were the worlds uncontested economic leader. But for decades weve sat by while the world has passed us by. Our outdated tax code is an anchor around the necks of our businesses, our innovators, and the American middle class. Today we voted for a tax cut which will restore economic growth, put more take home pay in the pockets of hardworking Americans, and restore opportunity for a generation of Americans. It will grow our middle class, it will reduce income disparity, and it will bring American jobs back. Congressman Rice also spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives today in support of H.R. 1. View his remarks here or below. BACKGROUND As a member of the Ways & Means Committee, the chief tax-writing committee in Congress, Congressman Rice has had a seat at the table in helping craft the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. Estimates show that in South Carolina this plan will create almost 13,000 new jobs and provide a $2,000 increase in income for median household families. For Congressman Rices district specifically, this plan is estimated to provide a $1,331 tax cut for the typical family of four in the Grand Strand and the Pee Dee. More information about the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act can be found here. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Scotts Bipartisan Investing in Opportunity Act Passes out of Finance Committee | 2017-11-16 | 2017 | 2017-11 | Republican | House | SC | Tim Scott | S001184 | www.scott.senate.gov | legacy | Thursday | November 16, 2017 Sen. Scotts Bipartisan Investing in Opportunity Act Passes out of Finance Committee Washington In a major step toward helping distressed communities nationwide, U.S. Senator Tim Scotts (R-SC) bipartisan Investing in Opportunity Act (IIOA) passed out of the Finance Committee as a part of the tax reform bill that will be voted on by the full Senate in the coming weeks. Capito (R-WV). The Investing in Opportunity Act can help spur growth in these communities and level the playing field, creating new opportunity in West Virginia and other regions. Im pleased to see it included in the latest version of the Senates tax proposal. I am thrilled that our legislation, the Investing in Opportunity Act, has been included in the Senate tax reform plan, said Sen. Ernst (R-IA). I want to thank Chairman Hatch and all of my Republican colleagues on the Finance Committee for their hard work drafting and advancing this once in a generation opportunity to revamp our nations tax code, Senator Scott said. "Were putting money back in the pockets of hardworking American families, ensuring the jobs of the future are created here in America, and giving some breathing room to a middle class that has been taxed too much for too long. Every single income bracket sees a tax decrease, and the typical American family will save upwards of $1,500 a year in taxes. "The defense bill represents a huge win for South Carolina, one of the nation's proudest military states, because it authorizes funding for vital military and national security investments such as the Savannah River Site, including the continued construction of the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility. "The report also includes my bill, H.R. 903, that prohibits funding the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization, an unnecessary organization that prepares for the entry into a treaty that was never ratified by Congress, in turn saving taxpayers millions of dollars." "Finally, I am grateful for the bill's permanent extension of the Special Survivor Indemnity Allowance, under the Survivor Benefit Plan, that finally does away with the widow's tax. Our military personnel, so many of whom call South Carolina home, risk their lives to defend our nation, and they should be able to trust that the benefits they designate for their spouses and families will always be there." The letter raises concerns that a new, proposed rule of origin standard in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) would diminish America’s global, competitive advantage in the auto industry. Currently, NAFTA requires that vehicles assembled in North America get 62.5% of their parts from factories on the continent. However, press accounts report that a new rule of origin proposal for autos and auto parts could drastically increase this requirement, which would fundamentally alter the very supply chains that have resulted in so much auto manufacturing coming to the United States. “If the goal of renegotiating NAFTA is to ‘do no harm,’ then tightening the current rule of origin standard, which is already the highest of any trade agreement worldwide, seems like a recipe for disaster.” said Rep. Sanford. “South Carolina has certainly benefited from a more competitive auto industry, courtesy of NAFTA’s encouragement of open trade and investment. The proof is in the growth of BMW’s Spartanburg plant, Mercedes’ expansion to North Charleston, and the new Volvo plant set to open next year in Berkeley County.” “I’m concerned that changes in the rules of origin in the North American Free Trade Agreement would affect long-standing business relationships and supply chains in and around my district and the Mid-South region,” said Rep. Cohen. “I hope Mr. Lighthizer and the USTR will reconsider plans for tightening rules of origin as proposed and avoid the disruption they would cause.” “Michigan’s economy has always been deeply rooted in the automotive industry. From assembly plants, to suppliers, parts manufacturers, distributors and the many other job providers in between, our automotive supply chain depends on the success of NAFTA,” said… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The IIOA changes the way capital gains are taxed when those gains are reinvested long-term in distressed communities. Scott has led the push for the legislation as a central part of his Opportunity Agenda. "This is fantastic news for low-income and distressed communities across the nation," Senator Scott said. "With more than 52 million Americans living in these communities, bringing long-term investment will help create jobs, spur entrepreneurship and small business, and restore hope where it has been fading for far too long. The Investing in Opportunity Act makes our strong tax reform package even more helpful for hardworking American families, who have been waiting for tax relief for more than a generation." There are currently trillions of dollars in unrealized capital gains in the United States. The IIOA incentivizes investors to make substantial, long-term investments in distressed communities by changing how capital gains are taxed when those investments are made. It creates a win-win scenario for these communities and investors. The Investing in Opportunity Act is cosponsored by fellow Finance Committee member Rob Portman (R-OH), as well as Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Lindsay Graham (R-SC), Chris Coons (D-DE), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Gary Peters (D-MI), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Todd Young (R-IN) and Mark Warner (D-VA). This bill will do just that. “Not only does the NDAA increase sizes to our military branches so we can best be prepared and provides much needed updated equipment, it gives our troops the largest pay raise in eight years. Our servicemen and women, who make sacrifices for us every day, deserve this pay raise. We enjoy the freedoms we have today and continue to have, because of our men and women in uniform. “One of the main responsibilities Congress has is to ensure that our nation’s armed services remain the strongest in the world and are provided the resources and tools necessary to do so. I am committed to ensuring that our servicemen and women will always receive the supplies needed. “I look forward to seeing the NDAA signed into law by President Trump. America is the land of the free because of the brave.” Background: Congressman Norman introduced an amendment to the NDAA in July prior to the bill going to Conference which initially required the Director of OMB to sign off on any additional Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) in order to ensure transparency. It was amended, and passed today, to direct the Comptroller General to conduct a study on the feasibility of separating the accounts. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

As U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) said on the Senate floor, Tax reform is about everyday Americans being able to keep more of their hard-earned money. Tax reform is about families like the one I grew up in--single-parent households, working paycheck to paycheck, year in and year out, praying and hoping for something good to happen. [The Senate bill] is good news for those single moms and single dads out there. It's also good news for the working class families, dual-income, making around $75,000 a year, working every day, trying to make sure they have a little left over for dinner out. We want to say to those folks who haven't really had a raise in a decade, we hear you. We want to deliver to our American family the opportunity to see more money in each paycheck. We are at place where the vast majority of taxpayers will get tax cut; every single bracket will have lower taxes. The reality of is if you define middle-class America as $73,000 because it's the average income per household in the country, that average household will see their taxes go down by $1,500. Those folks living in a single-parent household, head of household could see their taxes cut in half, and folks living in dual household with $117,000 see their taxes going down. Our business tax restructuring will create somewhere near a million jobs over the next ten years, American jobs created here at home, because we're going to have an opportunity to be competitive. This is really good news for the average person in this nation that wants to see the jobs of the future created here at home. You can watch Senator Scott talk tax reform on Face the Nation here. The resolution reaffirms U.S. support for South Korean forces and reiterates that the U.S. presence in South Korea should not be discussed in any potential negotiation with North Korea. "I was grateful to have the opportunity to lead a bipartisan delegation of House members to South Korea this summer," said Congressman Wilson. "During the trip I was reminded that our alliance with South Korea is one of the most important relationships we have around the world. President Donald Trump, who addressed South Korea's National Assembly in Seoul as a part of his trip to Asia, has demonstrated that he understands the significance of our alliance, and that's a breath of fresh air for both countries." In the years since formal hostilities ended and the Korean Armistice was signed, the U.S. and South Korea have deterred communist aggressors, including the nuclear threat from North Korea, and built a $145 billion annual trade relationship that strengthens the economies in both countries. South Korea began an economic boom in the early 1960's as the nation recovered from the Korean War. The country quickly became one of the largest industrialized nations in the world, revealing the stark contrast of a booming South as opposed to the destitution of the communist North. The U.S. and South Korea have cooperated on the peaceful use and implementation of nuclear energy for almost 60 years and worked mutually on pressuring North Korea towards nuclear disarmament. The U.S. and South Korea conduct five major training exercises and several dozen small unit exercises every year in preparation for possible continued conflict with the North. This legislation would allow workers to petition for a union certification election when fewer than 50% of current employees were members during the last election. "I am grateful for the chance to join my colleagues Congressman Francis Rooney and Congressman Bradley Byrne in introducing the Current Employee Representation Act," said Congressman Wilson. "We know that our businesses flourish and the economy grows when employees are empowered and unions are accountable to those who join the workforce." Many current employees are locked into old and outdated union contracts, approved long before they were hired. All employees deserve a voice that is reflective of today's workplace. This legislation would allow employees to decertify and represent themselves if they deem the union unnecessary. Congressman Rooney said: "The Current Employee Representation Act will provide union members more representation, as their views may differ from decisions made decades ago especially in the rapidly modernizing workforce of today. This legislation also gives union employees more power to be heard and hold the higher-up decision makers within unions more accountable to the rank and file." Congressman Byrne stated: "The needs and realities of the 21st Century workforce are a lot different from what workers faced decades in the past. With the Current Employee Representation Act, we can ensure workers are able to fully and effectively advocate for their needs. I applaud Congressman Rooney for his work on this pro-worker legislation, and I look forward to continue advocating for policies that benefit the hardworking men and women in America." -###- | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-08T22:12:50Z |

We must stand with the Cuban people and heroic dissidents who are continually fighting for their freedom from the communist Castro regime. We should not be traveling to Cuba and conducting business with Cuban controlled government or military entities when they are persecuting their own people. Their neglect for human rights is concerning, and I am thankful the Trump Administration is working to reverse part of President Obama’s misguided Cuba policy.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Elliott Williams Post Office Building”: “In honor of Veterans Day this weekend, and his birthday this coming Monday, I was proud to introduce, with the entire South Carolina delegation, the “J. Elliott Williams Post Office Building.” This bill would rename the post office located in Fort Mill after the most highly decorated enlisted sailor in the history of the United States Navy. “James E. Williams was born in Fort Mill on November 13, 1930 and served 20 years in the U.S. Navy in the Korean and Vietnam War. After his retirement he was awarded the Medal of Honor, every sea-service award for heroism, the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart. Furthermore, he was one of three sailors of American-Indian decent in the Twentieth Century to receive the Medal of Honor. “James E. Williams married his wife Elaine, and had five children and seven grandchildren. He is currently resting in peace in the Florence National Cemetery in Florence, South Carolina. Happy early birthday, and thank you to all of those who are serving and have served to defend our great nation.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

He also demonstrated the necessary resolve to help stop North Korea from developing the capability to strike the American homeland. It was a clear, concise, and forceful message which has been missing for the last twenty-five years. “Well done, Mr. President.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Clyburn | C000537 | clyburn.house.gov | clyburn | https://clyburn.house.gov/press-releases/ | scraper | Mr. Speaker, I rise to alert the American people to the tax scam that is the Republican "tax reform" proposal, unveiled last week. It is reported that President Trump wanted to call this bill, "cut, cut, cut." That would have been apropos. The first cut is for him and his family members, the second cut is for his wealthy friends and acquaintances, and the third cut is for large corporations classified as LLCs. It certainly does not cut taxes for middle income families or most small businesses. In fact, it does just the opposite. It is crystal clear who gets the cuts and who gets to pay more. First and foremost, the GOP tax plan eliminates inheritance taxes. This tax only applies to estates of over $11 million and only affects two tenths of one percent of families in America, those who wish to pass along their wealth, unearned and untaxed. Why are Republicans doing this? Because it's a huge priority for some of their biggest donors. In fact, this cut is not even about the 0.2 percent–it's really about two families–the Mercers and the Kochs. The bottom line is that America's hard-working low, moderate and middle-income families will be asked to pay for this $172 billion dollar give away to the super rich. At the heart of this scam is the GOP pretense not to be cutting taxes for the super-rich by maintaining the top rate of 39.6 percent. However, it increases the income level that the 39.6 percent applies to; from $470,000 to $1 million. These proposed rate changes will cost over $1 trillion. This cut also goes to those who make far more than $1 million as well. Whether your income is $1 million, $10 million, or $100 million, this provision alone gives you an extra $25,000 a year. Mr. Speaker, many South Carolinians I represent do not make $25,000 in a year. The GOP tax plan also features a special rate for the owners of "pass-through" businesses at a cost of $448 billion. These are LLCs and partnerships, who pay zero corporate tax, and whose owners' income is treated the same as anybody else's. The Republica… | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-08T22:12:50Z |

| https://norman.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=45 | Congressman Norman Praises Passage of Save Local Business Act | 2017-11-07 | 2017 | 2017-11 | Republican | House | SC | Ralph Norman | N000190 | norman.house.gov | legacy | Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) has released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 3441, the Save Local Business Act: "It may be cliché to say that “small and local businesses are the backbone of our economy” but at the end of the day, there is no denying that statement. Small businesses truly are the gears that keep our economy moving, and when they suffer, our economy suffers. “Since 2015, when the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) adopted an expanded definition of the “joint employer” standard – upending decades of precedent and redefining who an employer is – there has been much confusion and ambiguity. For example, since then, there have been over 65,000 letters sent to Congress expressing confusion and asking for clarity in the aftermath of this rule. “Locally owned franchises are America’s unseen small businesses, and in my district alone, there are roughly 2,000 establishments that provide over 15,000 jobs with an economic output of over 1 billion dollars. Small business development, economic growth, and entrepreneurs will continue to be hurt by the NLRB’s excessively broad definition of “joint-employer” until Congress finds a concrete definition – which this piece of legislation will do. “The Save Local Business Act provides clarity for small and local businesses as to what it means to be a “joint employer,” restoring necessary clarity for employers and employees alike. I am proud to have voted for this bipartisan bill which helps small businesses all across the nation.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | ||

Tim Scott of South Carolina a framed poem as a gift from her class, thanking him for his support of the five-year-old school. How old are you? Scott asked her. My birthday is tomorrow, she said. Scott then gave her a present shed never forget. He led her classmates in chorus of Happy Birthday. Downing, who turns 10 on Tuesday, blushed.
