"Congratulations to Abdala, Uthej, and Connor on placing in this year's Congressional App Challenge. Every year, I continue to be impressed by the ingenuity and talent displayed by those West Tennessee students who chose to submit an app," said Rep. Kustoff. (Dec. 21, 2020) – Tonight, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted against the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. This legislation is over 5,000 pages long, contains all 12 appropriations bills that are supposed to be voted on individually and has a $2.4 trillion price tag. The bill was released earlier this afternoon, giving every elected official not involved in the drafting process little time to effectively evaluate the straight text of the bill. A COVID-19 relief package -- negotiated behind closed doors by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a small select group of elected officials – was also tacked onto this enormous legislation. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:42:23Z |

From the Chickamauga Lock, to the Oak Ridge Reservation, and the Chattanooga Federal courthouse I will never cease fighting for East Tennessee's priorities," Fleischmann continued. Rose Rejects Backroom, Trillion-Dollar Spending Measure | 2020-12-21 | 2020 | 2020-12 | Republican | House | TN | John W. Rose | R000612 | johnrose.house.gov | johnrose | https://johnrose.house.gov/media/press-releases | scraper | WASHINGTON – Congressman John Rose (TN-6) released this statement following his vote against the last minute, $2.3 trillion pushed through the House at the eleventh hour: "Tennesseans are tired of the swampy, closed-door, last-minute rush to spend our national treasure. This practice has put us in debt by the trillions. The House was forced to vote on a multi-trillion dollar 5,600-page backroom deal that was given to Members of Congress just hours before. I refuse to reward bad behavior with a 'yes' vote and that is especially true on a bill such as this that few people, most importantly my constituents, know what is actually in it. "The $300 weekly unemployment supplement hurts American businesses by incentivizing workers to stay home and sending direct payments to families making up to $174,000 is a misallocation of aide that could have otherwise helped those individuals, hospitals, schools, and small businesses that are truly in need during this pandemic. "I am not content to push the problems of today onto our children and grandchildren when with true leadership, collaboration, and thought, we can and should deal with our nation's problems responsibly. Tennesseans deserve better." U.S. Representative John Rose represents Tennessee's Sixth Congressional District and resides in Cookeville with his wife, Chelsea, and their son, Guy. The Sixth District includes Cannon, Clay, Coffee, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, White, and Wilson counties as well as portions of Cheatham and Van Buren counties. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:42:23Z |

Pennsylvania, et al. "My constituents have expressed their grave concern over the integrity of our elections. As the representatives of the citizens in our respective districts, it is our duty to preserve our republic and ensure trust in our electoral process. The American people deserve transparency, accuracy, and fairness in this and every election," said Representative Rose. "As we point out, the record clearly shows that the Defendant states violated the Constitutional provision that presidential electors be appointed in a manner directed only by the state ‘Legislature[s].' This amicus brief articulates this concern and requests that the Court carefully consider those facts and determine what it means for the 2020 election. I urge the U.S. Supreme Court to take up this case and do their part to restore American confidence in our election system." Background: On Tuesday, December 8, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin to challenge their 2020 presidential election results. Seventeen other states have filed an amicus brief, including Tennessee, in defense of states' authority to ensure the integrity of their elections. The amicus brief Rep. Rose signed today argues that the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin violated the Electors Clause of the Constitution due to changes in voting rules and procedures through the courts or executive actions, but not through the state legislatures. It asserts that these states violated this constitutional provision and maintains that it should be the responsibility of state legislatures to appoint their electors. Congress previously passed a short-term funding measure on September 22 after failing to fully fund the government for fiscal year 2021. Rep. Burchett released the following statement regarding his vote: "Nine months wasn't enough time for appropriators to figure out how to fund the government back in September so they went with a continuing resolution, and here we are three months later with the same result. This is getting ridiculous and the worst part is we will pass a third temporary funding measure next week. Congress needs to fulfill its Constitutional duty and pass an actual budget for fiscal year 2022 so we avoid this disastrous process next year." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:42:23Z |

This bill would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act's list of harmful narcotics. It would eliminate criminal penalties for manufacturing, distribution, and possession of marijuana, expunge a large number of federal marijuana related crimes, and it gives taxpayer dollars to the marijuana industry and services for convicted drug dealers. "As a former U.S. Attorney, I have witnessed firsthand how narcotics like marijuana lead to further addiction and plague our communities," said Rep. Kustoff. "This bill would only encourage more reckless use of the drug and undermine our law enforcement, while creating further challenges in West Tennessee and across the nation." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:42:23Z |

His comments that it is bad news' that the Pfizer vaccine is proving to be effective are both extremely sad and dangerous for the health of Americans. It would be unethical to delay distribution of a proven safe vaccine while Americans continue to succumb to the virus. The federal government is coordinating with state governments, tribal leaders, and private industry to ensure that a vaccine can be distributed swiftly to the American people once it is approved, and Americans should be confident that any vaccine developed under Operation Warp Speed will be safe and effective. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Rose | R000612 | johnrose.house.gov | johnrose | https://johnrose.house.gov/media/press-releases | scraper | WASHINGTON – This evening, U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-6) released the following statement on the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court: "I applaud the Senate for confirming Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court. She is one of the most exceptionally qualified individuals to be nominated to serve on the Supreme Court in recent memory. "When President Donald Trump was elected, the American people made it clear that they wanted justices who will follow the law and interpret the Constitution as it is written, rather than legislating from the bench. Judge Barrett has proven she is a strong constitutionalist and a brilliant and fair jurist with an exemplary judicial temperament. "It is disappointing that this confirmation process was plagued with unnecessary grandstanding and personal attacks on Judge Barrett's faith by Senate Democrats. However, history and the American people will remember what is clear – Judge Barrett is an outstanding, balanced addition to the Court. "I look forward to Judge Barrett continuing her distinguished record serving the American public with honor, respect, and humility on our nation's highest court, and I congratulate President Trump on another successful confirmation." U.S. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:34:36Z |

Today, the GOP Doctors Caucus issued the following statement after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made disparaging comments about the Federal Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and suggested that Americans not take an Operation Warp Speed vaccine to ABC's George Stephanopoulos: Once again, Governor Cuomo's ignorance about safely getting us out of this pandemic is endangering Americans' lives. It would be unconscionable if Americans failed to take a safe, effective vaccine because of partisan politics. Our nation's scientific experts and researchers are heroically working around-the-clock to deliver safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines and treatments that our nation so desperately needs, and they are doing so independent of politics and without sacrificing the rigorous standards or quality controls to which they have always been held. That's why Governor Cuomo's comments are not only wrong they are dangerous. All of us Republicans and Democrats need to be doing everything we can to ensure Americans trust our scientists on the safety of vaccines. We hope ABC will talk to actual scientific experts about the safety and efficacy of vaccines instead of simply letting the governor with the deadliest coronavirus record have an open forum to sow distrust in our medical experts. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, Rep. Burchett introduced a resolution that would require the House Clerk to read the Congressional Budget Office cost estimate of all bills on the House Floor. "What happened with the Oct. 1 continuing resolution was a disservice to every American taxpayer," said Rep. Burchett. "The public needs to know what their elected officials are voting on and how much it costs, but that was impossible with the process that brought the continuing resolution to the floor. I am introducing this resolution so that if legislation is rushed through the House or drafted behind closed doors, the American people will at least know how much it is going to cost them." This new rule will ensure that Members of the House and the American taxpayers are made aware of the cost of any legislation voted upon by the U.S. House of Representatives. The full text of Rep. Burchett's resolution is available here. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:34:36Z |

Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant of $313,361 will be awarded to Ballad Health to fund a school-based telemedicine virtual health clinic for 8 counties across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia: Having doctors available virtually in schools increases students' access to quality health care and is great news for our community. With parents' permission, children will be able to have a doctor's visit virtually, and parents will have the option to join virtually or in-person at school meaning parents will have an alternative to leaving work to take kids to the doctor. I'm pleased the USDA is directing this Rural Development grant to our area. I'm also grateful to Ballad Health for investing in this project and for their dedication to finding innovative ways to increase access to healthcare. This couldn't come at a better time. We need to get kids back in schools and to give schools the resources to do that safely. Note: In addition to this grant, Ballad Health is contributing $55,299 of the project cost. This project will benefit 46,765 people. A list of participating schools can be found here. (Oct. 7, 2020) – Earlier this year, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) sought answers on behalf of his constituents following Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's abrupt operational changes at the United States Postal Service (USPS). Today, Rep. Burchett once again raised the concerns from his August 17 letter during a phone conversation with Postmaster General DeJoy. "I thank the Postmaster General for making himself available to discuss the recent USPS operational changes that negatively impacted many East Tennesseans," said Rep. Burchett. "While the USPS has reversed course on these changes, I expressed to Postmaster General DeJoy why many folks, myself included, felt frustrated and blindsided by the operational changes. I was happy Postmaster General DeJoy agreed that increased communication and transparency are important to maintaining public trust, and I look forward to working with him and my colleagues to make the postal service more efficient and competitive." During the discussion, Rep. Burchett asked Postmaster General DeJoy about the process that led to implementing changes that delayed the delivery of essential products to East Tennesseans. Postmaster General DeJoy explained that reduced traffic at retail postal service locations triggered shorter hours for USPS workers and physical stores. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:34:36Z |

U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted against this legislation last night and released the following statement: "Like the original HEROES Act, this second attempt contains questionable provisions that assert federal control over elections, funding for abortion clinics and stimulus checks for people here illegally. Speaker Pelosi clearly believes this crisis is a chance for political gain, and several House Democrats joined every Republican in voting against this irresponsible bill. The next COVID-19 relief bill needs to focus on jumpstarting the economy by helping small businesses, working families and employers as they begin to reopen," said Rep. Burchett. The Speaker, in another show of prioritizing her political agenda over addressing the pandemic, refuses to allow a vote on Paycheck Protection Program extension legislation. A bipartisan group of more than 150 members, including Rep. Burchett, signed onto a discharge petition that would force a vote on H.R. 8265, which would extend the PPP program using already appropriated funding meant to aid small business and workers. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:34:36Z |

Since 1869, there have consistently been nine justices appointed to the Supreme Court, a number that is set by Congress not the Constitution. House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said that if a justice is confirmed before the November election, he would support packing the court. Specifically, this would amend the U.S. Constitution to prohibit a change to the number of seats on the U.S. Supreme Court until 10 years after enactment of any legislation to alter the size of the Court. U.S. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after President Trump signed H.R. 8337, the Continuing Appropriations Act, into law. In addition to extending federal appropriations through December 11, this legislation extended the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Eastern District of Tennessee, which was scheduled to lapse on September 30, 2020, for an additional four years: This is the only bankruptcy judgeship in Northeast Tennessee, and I'm thrilled we were successful in extending it. I've been working for months, along with Senators Alexander and Blackburn, to ensure this judgeship would continue. Allowing the court to lapse would have greatly disadvantaged Northeast Tennessee. Bankruptcy cases from our region would have been reassigned to the bankruptcy courts in Knoxville and Chattanooga, which would add more cases to both courts, force many East Tennesseans to make hours-long trips to have their cases heard and prevent them from having similar access to emergency hearings to halt foreclosures and injunctions. I'm thankful that this court will be extended for 4 more years and that the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts has recently recommended to Congress that this court be extended or made permanent. Note: Rep. Roe wrote House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and Ranking Member Jim Jordan on July 28, 2020, to encourage the extension of this court. That letter can be found here. H.R. 8337 extended the Eastern District of Tennessee's bankruptcy court, located in Greeneville, for 4 additional years. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after signing a discharge petition led by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) to bring H.R. 8265, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Extension Act, to a vote on the House floor: Many businesses in East Tennessee and across our country are still in desperate need of relief to ensure their survival. Freeing up PPP funds is a no-brainer, yet Speaker Pelosi continues stalling negotiations and delaying relief for American workers and small businesses. I've heard from countless Tennesseans that the PPP was a lifeline for them. House Democrats should stop delaying and pass the PPP Extension Act to give workers and businesses the relief they need to get back on their feet. I was proud to sign this discharge petition, and I hope Democrats who care more about helping small businesses survive than they do about partisan policies will join us in supporting this commonsense effort. Note: A discharge petition is a tool Members can use to try and bring legislation to the floor for a vote absent support from House leadership. To succeed, 218 signatures are needed for the House to consider the legislation. A list of signers of the discharge petition can be found here. H.R. 8265 would extend the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) through the end of 2020, making available $138 billion of unspent PPP funds. This legislation would also allow certain eligible businesses to apply for a second forgivable loan. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

It is critical our schools are prepared to understand and address this condition to maintain student safety. The School-Based Allergies and Asthma Management Program Act will help school personnel and parents ensure students with asthma and other allergies adequately manage their condition so they can focus on their education with peace of mind. America's students ought to be able to go to school and learn without having to worry that school nurses and staff won't be prepared to help in an emergency relating to asthma or allergies,Leader Hoyer said.Parents should have peace of mind that their children's schools are equipped to handle an asthma attack or an allergic reaction. I'm pleased H.R. 2468 passed the House today and I thank my friend Dr. Roe for his commitment to this important issue. In the letter the Members of Congress wrote, "[O]n September 1, FEMA issued Interim Policy FP 104-009-19, which will narrow eligibility of expenditures related to COVID-19 response, undermine the plans Tennessee is already executing, and undercut President Trump's vision to get our children back to school. We urge FEMA to stop implementation of this policy immediately. Employers also could not deny employment opportunities based on the need for reasonable accommodations or require an employee to take paid or unpaid leave instead of providing a reasonable accommodation. The vote was 329 to 73. Congressman Cohen made the following statement: This meaningful legislation will protect pregnant workers and prevent the suffering caused by insufficient workplace protections, a situation far too familiar to many workers who call Memphis home. Two years ago, I was shocked to read of the disturbing workplace abuses occurring in an XPO Logistics warehouse in Memphis. Warehouse workers were denied minor and reasonable accommodations like less taxing workloads and shortened work shifts. As a result, several women suffered miscarriages, some while still on thewarehouse floor. I, along with Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and ninety-five of my colleagues, wrote to the Education and Labor Committee to urge the 115th Congress to take decisive action and consider the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. I'm pleased House Democrats recognized the importance of this legislation in the 116th Congress, and I am proud to vote for it today. I hope to see its swift implementation. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

It makes no sense to discourage the very students Congress wants to encourage to attend college and benefit from federal financial aidThe right time to finish this job is now a time when college students and their families are under so much pressure and facing so much uncertainty, especially homeless students, students in foster care, and those living with grandparents. Senator Lamar Alexander WASHINGTON, September 17, 2020 Senate education committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today said, the time to finish fixing the FAFSA is now and I hope we can pass bipartisan legislation to do so by the end of this year, during this morning's committee hearing to discuss how Congress can finish the job of shortening the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Twenty million students and their families are in the middle of what is likely the strangest first semester of college in a century, Alexander continued. Almost everything has changed for students except for one thing students still have to answer 108 questions on the dreaded FAFSA form. For years now, I've carted around the FAFSA as a prop to make the case for simplifying it but it's no joke, especially this year, Alexander said. Alexander noted an eight percent drop in the number of black undergraduate students enrolled in summer sessions, compared with last summer's enrollment, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Many students are questioning their investment in a college education at a time when many classes are only offered online, Alexander said. Many of the low-income students who would benefit most economically from college long term are putting it off all together. Tariffs are taxes, pure and simple. They make what we buy and sell more expensive. The laws of economics usually mean that when you make what you buy and sell more expensive, you buy and sell less of it,Alexander said. With more than 900 plants in 87 of our 95 counties, and one-third of our state's manufacturing jobs being auto jobs, Tennessee is likely to be hurt more than any other state by these tariffs, which is why I opposed them when they were announced in August. Senator Alexanderalso said, Tennessee is fortunate that Senator Marsha Blackburn serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee and will be able to help shepherd both of these qualified nominations through the confirmation process. She and I have already discussed the importance of these nominations with the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, especially because of increasing caseloads in the Eastern District of Tennessee due to the two current vacancies. Alexander made his remarks at today's Appropriations subcommittee hearing on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' COVID-19 response efforts so far, as well as what steps Congress can take now to prepare for the next pandemic. Jared Diamond, the author of Guns, Germs and Steel,' said the biggest difference with this pandemic versus those in the past is the jet plane,' which enables millions of people to carry infections from one place to another overnight. Because of this, the next pandemic could be as early as next year,Alexander said. This is not a new problem.Fifteen years ago, then Majority Leader of the Senate, Dr. Bill Frist, made 20 speeches predicting that a viral pandemic was no longer a question of if,' but a question of when.' Four presidents and several congresses have done some of what needed to be done to prepare for pandemics, but clearly not enough of it. Alexander continued:In preparing for future pandemics, we tend to go from panic to neglect to panic. In other words, while we're in the middle of a pandemic, it's got our attention, but as soon as it's over, we don't do all the things that we should do. So my hope is that with any action that we take this year, we would include the three or four things that we should do to make sure that we provide sustained funding for a period of years. The measure would prohibit discrimination based on race-based hair styles by extending statutory protection in the workplace to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, twists and knots. Congressman Cohen noted that state Senator Raumesh Akbari of Memphis introduced a related measure, S.B. 1832, in the Tennessee General Assembly earlier this year. See Congressman Cohen's remarks during the mark up here. After the Committee vote, Congressman Cohen made the following statement: Black women are far more likely to be sent home from the workplace because of their hair, and that's not fair. Since the 1970s many courts and the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission have recognized that forcing Americans to change their natural hair as a requirement for work could be racial discrimination. Everyone deserves the opportunity to go to work and do their job without trying to change who they are. This is an issue of equity, not aesthetics. As a state Senator in 1995, Congressman Cohen introduced an African braiding bill in the Tennessee General Assembly. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Student athletes should not be on the payroll and treated as hired hands. I do not see a good ending to allowing a few student athletes to be paid by commercial interests while most of their teammates are not, Alexander said. If young athletes want to be a part of a team, enjoy the undergraduate experience, learn from coaches who are among the best teachers, and be paid a full scholarship that helps them earn a degree worth $1 million during their lifetime, their earnings should benefit all student athletes at that institution. If they prefer to keep the money for themselves, let them become professionals. Alexander made his remarks at a committee hearing he chaired today on 4 new state laws and more than 30 state legislative proposals that would allow commercial interests to pay student athletes for use of their name, image, and likeness. Alexander, a former President of the University of Tennessee, a former member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, and United States Education Secretary, helped set a school track record at Vanderbilt and is one of the NCAA's 100 most influential student athletes. (Sept. 14, 2020) – Today, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) reached a significant achievement for his first term in Congress. The House of Representatives unanimously passed the Microloan Transparency and Accountability Act, the first piece of legislation authored by Rep. Burchett to pass the House. U.S. Representative Andy Kim (NJ-03) joined Rep. Burchett to introduce this bipartisan bill. While speaking in support of his legislation on the House Floor, Rep. Burchett pointed out rural small businesses deserve fair access to Small Business Administration (SBA) resources so they can grow. "As a former local mayor, I know the difference that easy access to loans – even small ones – can make for our American mom-and-pop shops. Rural small businesses will have more opportunity to grow and innovate with the help of this legislation and the steps it takes to promote fair access to financial resources for every American small business," said Rep. Burchett. "The coronavirus crisis has hit our small businesses hard, and they can use all the help they can get," said Rep. Kim. "I'm proud to work with Congressman Burchett to get this bill through the House and hope the Senate takes immediate action to help our entrepreneurs and get people back to work." The Microloan Transparency and Accountability Act provides SBA microloan intermediaries with a 5% technical assistance grant for working with rural small businesses. Microloan intermediaries must make 25% of their loans to rural small businesses to be eligible for the technical assistance grant. The legislation also improves transparency within the Microloan Program by requiring the SBA to update Congress with a Portfolio Risk Analysis of microloans on an annual basis. The Microloan Transparency and Accountability Act now heads to the Senate and awaits floor action. The text of the bill is available here and Rep. Burchett's full floor speech is available here. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:28:51Z |

| https://cohen.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congressmen-cohen-asks-treasury-secretary-mnuchin-exercise-proper | Congressmen Cohen Asks Treasury Secretary Mnuchin to Exercise Proper Oversight of Paycheck Protection Program Loans | 2020-09-11 | 2020 | 2020-09 | Democrat | House | TN | Steve Cohen | C001068 | cohen.house.gov | legacy | MEMPHIS Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today wrote to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asking that he reconsider blanket loan forgiveness for recipients of assistance through the Paycheck Protection Program after both the Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service identified egregious instances of fraud. Congressman Cohen reminded Mnuchin of his public testimony on the issue of loan forgiveness and asked, in light of the fraud concerns, whether he has reversed his position. The letter reads in part: As you'll recall, in July, you testified before the House Small Business Committee and suggested that blanket forgiveness be given to all smaller businesses who received PPP loans without verifying how the funds were used. With widespread fraud and abuse already identified, I find this approach very concerning. The DOJ and IRS have already identified instances of fraud in these programs, and we must remain diligent to ensure the resources Congress allocated reach those for whom they were intended. Even if just a tiny proportion of the total loans were fraudulent, in a program of that size, that could equate to billions of dollars in losses for the taxpayers. See the entire letter here. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | ||

Earlier today, I wrote to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asking that he exercise better oversight of the Paycheck Protection Program in light of evident fraud in the program.I also pledged, on this 19th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, to Never Forget those we lost that day and to meet the needs of survivors. Also this week, I celebrated Labor Day by recognizing all those working on the front lines, and working from home, during this pandemic; wrote to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to register my continuing disquiet over his government's crackdown on student dissent and free expression; reminded constituents of the September 30 deadline to fill out 2020 U.S. Census forms; announced significant community development housing grants to Memphis and Shelby County; spoke in support of restaurant workers and employees of entertainment venues hard hit by the economic consequences of the coronavirus; announced grants to combat sickle cell disease and to better understand aging; remembered my friend state Senator Curtis Person; and offered a coronavirus-related health tip. Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after the National Institute of Standards and Technology published Insights Into Behavior During Chimney Tops 2 Fire Could Improve Evacuation Planning: The Gatlinburg wildfires were a senseless tragedy, and my heart still breaks seeing images of the fire's destruction. I thank the residents of Gatlinburg who participated in this study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology so that our community and others can learn from these painful experiences and improve wildfire evacuation planning. Particularly now as wildfires are raging across our nation, the lessons we can learn from studying previous tragedies can help save lives now. I think we all need to reflect upon what was learned from East Tennesseans who lost loved ones, friends, homes, and businesses. The study also helped us understand more about how residents make the decision to evacuate, including a surprising finding that the long-term presence of smoke actually lowered residents' sense of danger. Fast-moving wildfires present a unique threat, so it's critical we learn from this tragedy to better protect people in the future.
