In a letter sent today to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the members wrote, “As champions of voting rights in congress, we write to express serious concern about the year ending without a path forward on advancing voting rights.” “After months of compromises, Republicans have not come to the table on voting rights in numbers sufficient to overcome the existing filibuster.” “Ending 2021 without voting rights reform will allow state legislatures to continue their efforts in the new year to limit the right to vote. Meanwhile, failing to end partisan gerrymandering will allow some states to finalize maps that enshrine profound partisan imbalances for the next decade. We have no time to lose to ensure people have access to the ballot box and have a fair voice in selecting their representatives.” “We can no longer allow Senate procedure to stand in the way of ensuring people have their voice heard, and we ask that you do what is necessary to advance the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. An allocation from the New Markets Tax Credit Program is also being pursued to enable an expansion of planned capabilities and upgrade of equipment, making the plant more efficient and competitive in the global market. “I'm thrilled that Globe Metallurgical Inc. is reopening its silicon metal facility in my hometown of Selma!” said Rep. I applaud everyone for their continued work in promoting growth and economic opportunity through high-quality jobs to residents in Selma and across the Black Belt.” Background: The Selma plant closed in 2018 due to low prices for silicon metal caused by foreign dumping. Sewell. “We have an obligation to pay our bills that have piled up under previous administrations including President Trump's. Addressing the debt limit is the responsible thing to do, and I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues to protect families from catastrophe and pay our bills.” Notably, raising the debt limit does not authorize future spending. It is about meeting obligations the government has already made, including to Social Security recipients, veterans and to the millions who have benefited from the bipartisan COVID relief legislation passed in December – which was authored by multiple GOP Senators and voted for by more than 40 Republicans and signed into law by the previous president. Today, 66 years ago, Rosa Parks took a bold stand against racial discrimination by refusing to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat did more than simply desegregate the bus systems of Montgomery. Her dignified courage inspired a movement that changed our nation. Rosa Parks’ quiet refusal to surrender her seat to a white passenger on December 1, 1955, sparked a city-wide boycott of the Montgomery bus system that lasted one whole year and broke the very will of a city heavily steeped in segregation. Biographer Douglas Brinkley recounted the powerful moment in his biography of Rosa Parks. He writes: “Are you going to stand up?" the driver demanded. Rosa Parks looked straight at him and said: "No." Flustered, and not quite sure what to do, the bus driver retorted, "Well, I'm going to have you arrested." And Rosa Parks sat next to the window and quietly said, "You may do that." Her soft yet forceful response led to an arrest, a $10 dollar fine, and the beginning of the most important demonstration in American history. Sewell introduced in February, takes aim at the United States’ urgent maternal health crisis, providing critical funding to increase maternal vaccination rates and reduce vaccination disparities. The Maternal Vaccination Act was included in the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021. “Today, the House took an important step in our fight to address the nation’s urgent maternal health crisis by passing my Maternal Vaccination Act!” said Rep. Sewell. “We know that the U.S. suffers from the highest pregnancy-related death rate in the developed world with Black women facing disproportionately high maternal mortality rates.” “By providing funding to increase immunization rates for women and babies from communities with historically low vaccination rates, my Maternal Vaccination Act will help protect our mothers and babies from preventable diseases,” continued Sewell. “Passage of this bill brings us one step closer to ensuring that women of every background enjoy equal access to maternal health care.” “Low vaccination rates put both mothers and babies at risk, so we must work to increase maternal vaccinations during this public health emergency and beyond. I was proud to see the House of Representatives pass Congresswoman Terri Sewell’s Maternal Vaccination Act with unanimous bipartisan support—it’s a crucial part of my Momnibus package that will protect moms and babies against vaccine-preventable diseases and save lives,” said Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Founder and Co-Chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus. “I urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill and other key priorities from the Momnibus and get them signed into law.” The Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021 will build on existing maternal health legislation, like policies to extend postpartum … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T20:30:49Z

https://sewell.house.gov/2021/10/rep-sewell-calls-senators-reform-filibuster-and-pass-federal-voting Rep. Sewell Calls on Senators to Reform the Filibuster and Pass Federal Voting Rights Legislation 2021-10-26 2021 2021-10 Democrat House AL Terri A. Sewell S001185 sewell.house.gov sewell https://sewell.house.gov/press-releases scraper Washington, D.C. – On Monday, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) spoke on the House Floor during the Congressional Black Caucus’ Special Order Hour to call on her Senate colleagues to reform the filibuster and pass federal legislation to protect the right to vote, including her bill, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Below are Rep. Sewell’s remarks: Rep. Sewell: Madam Speaker, as we speak, our nation is facing the most concerted effort to restrict the right to vote in a generation. Just this year, 400 bills have been introduced in state legislatures across this nation to restrict the right to vote. And in 19 states, at least 33 of these bills have become law, including the most egregious of state legislatures, Georgia, where now it is a crime to give a bottle of water to a voter as they stand in line. Even as our very democracy comes under attack, we see Republicans standing firm in their opposition to protecting the right to vote, a bedrock principle that should never be partisan. Just last week, we watched as every Senate Republican voted to block debate on the Freedom to Vote Act, a commonsense bill that would ensure every American has access to the ballot box. What are they afraid of, I ask? What are they afraid of? Last week’s vote made clear that Senate Republicans are unwilling to even debate voting rights, let alone hold a fair vote. This just further demonstrates that in order to protest and protect our democracy and the sacred right to vote, we must reform the filibuster to create a path forward for must-pass pieces of legislation. Madam Speaker, almost three weeks ago, we saw Senator Leahy introduce S. 4, the John Robert Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, in the Senate. But unless we take action on the filibuster and take action now, this critical bill will face the same fate as the Freedom to Vote Act. The way I see it —every Senator is now faced with a choice. It’s voting rights or the filibuster. It’s protecting our sacred right to vote and our democracy or the filibuster. It’s … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T20:24:51Z
https://sewell.house.gov/2021/10/rep-sewell-votes-pass-family-violence-prevention-and-services Rep. Sewell Votes to Pass Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act 2021-10-26 2021 2021-10 Democrat House AL Terri A. Sewell S001185 sewell.house.gov sewell https://sewell.house.gov/press-releases scraper Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) applauded the passage of H.R. 2119, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act. This bipartisan bill would reauthorize the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) which—nearly 40 years after its enactment—continues to be the primary source of federal funding for domestic violence shelters in the US. H.R. 2119 would enhance and refocus federal investment to address intimate partner violence (IPV). The bill passed the House today by a vote of 228-200. “We have a duty to prevent the scourge of domestic violence and ensure that survivors in Alabama and throughout the country are safe and cared for,” said Rep. Sewell. “That’s why I’m proud to join my colleagues in voting to pass the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act. At a time when rates of domestic violence are on the rise, ensuring that we fully fund programs to combat domestic violence is paramount!” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in four women and nearly one in ten men have reported experiencing some form of IPV during their lifetime. Yet, according to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, in just one day in 2020, domestic violence programs were unable to meet 11,047 requests from survivors of domestic violence for shelter and/or supportive services. This is an increase of almost 2,000 requests (almost 18 percent) in just two years. FVPSA, which is the central pillar in fighting against IPV, has not been reauthorized since 2010, leaving programs underfunded and outdated. COVID-19 has increased the risk of IPV and disrupted services that offer resources and support. Communities of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals experience disproportionate rates of IPV but face significant barriers to accessing services. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T20:24:51Z
