Mrvan M001214 mrvan.house.gov mrvan https://mrvan.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank Mrvan, Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, along with Congressional Steel Caucus Chairman Rick Crawford (AR-01), submitted testimony to the International Trade Commission (ITC) during their hearing on unfair imports of rebar from several countries. The text of the testimony submitted to the ITC is below and a pdf is available here. “We write today in strong support of affirmative finding in the ITC’s five-year sunset review of antidumping duties on unfairly traded imports of steel concrete reinforcing bar (“rebar”) from Belarus, China, Indonesia, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, and Ukraine. “As Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, we represent workers and facilities manufacturing steel and rebar products, including the United Steelworkers and the U.S. manufacturers which filed the original petitions, and we believe these trade remedies are critical to the economic vitality of the U.S. steel industry and its workers. “Rebar strengthens our nation’s buildings, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure. The imposition of antidumping duties has ensured that steel producers have the certainty to make significant investments to expand our country’s rebar production capabilities and invest in our workers. We believe that the potential removal of these antidumping duties would unnecessarily threaten the industry at a crucial time for the U.S. infrastructure investments. “A recent review by the Department of Commerce found that if the trade remedies were not continued, producers in these seven countries would resume dumping rebar into the United States at margins ranging from 17% to 233%. This domestic industry has been materially injured by several waves of unfairly traded imports in recent years, and it now faces growing global capacity that increasingly targets the U.S. market. We are concerned that these imports would depress U.S. prices, injure U.S. producers and have a devastating impact on the investments being made to enhance U.S. manuf… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:57:20Z

Mrvan M001214 mrvan.house.gov mrvan https://mrvan.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank Mrvan, Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, along with Congressional Steel Caucus Chairman Rick Crawford (AR-01), sent a letter to the Administration expressing support for expanding the Section 232 Steel Tariffs to address a recent surge of certain steel imports. Specifically, the letter to the Secretary of the Department of Commerce expresses concern over the recent surge of imports of fabricated structural steel and prestressed concrete strand products and supports the request made by the domestic steel industry to include such products under the Section 232 Steel Tariffs. Vice Chairman Mrvan stated, “As the Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, I believe that every action must be taken to ensure that the domestic steel industry and our hard-working members of the United Steelworkers are able to compete in our global economy. I am proud to have supported the Section 232 Steel Tariffs since day one, and believe we must continue to look for new ways to utilize this tool to hold foreign countries that cheat accountable and support the strength of the American steel industry.” Chairman Crawford stated, “Thanks to the Section 232 Tariffs, American steel producers have been able to compete on a far more level playing field than ever before. Unfortunately, foreign entities have been sidestepping these tariffs by flooding the market with derivative steel products. We have an obligation to protect the American steel industry from these unfair practices.” USW President David McCall stated, “Global overcapacity and unfair trade have for too long undercut our nation’s domestic steel industry, compromising our ability to meet our own national security needs. Now, as we’re making historic investments to rebuild our infrastructure, we must ensure we’re using high-quality domestic products. Our union commends Reps. Crawford and Mrvan for their tireless advocacy in preserving and expanding Section 232 measures so that we can strengthen our supply chains, maintain jo… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:57:20Z

Carson, Jayapal, Schakowsky Introduce UNRWA Funding Bill 2024-09-19 2024 2024-09 Democrat House IN André Carson C001072 carson.house.gov carson https://carson.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, DC—Representative André Carson (IN-07) has introduced H.R. 9649, the UNRWA Funding Emergency Restoration Act of 2024 with Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09). This bill will end the congressionally and administratively mandated pause on funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA). The United States has historically been one of the largest financial supporters of UNRWA, which serves nearly 6 million Palestinian refugees across the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon. In March of this year, the U.S. paused UNRWA funding after the Israeli government alleged that 12 agency employees had direct involvement in Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack. Following the UN’s investigation and proactive commitments made by UNRWA toward complete accountability and reform, all countries except the U.S. have resumed their UNRWA funding, including the European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Finland, Germany, Japan, and Sweden. Approximately 1.9 million people – 9 in 10 Gazans – have been displaced at least once, and an estimated 43,580 are pregnant women. UNRWA has served as the primary humanitarian aid organization operating in Gaza, and without funding, hundreds of thousands of Gaza civilians are left vulnerable. It is estimated that over 1 million Gazans will not have enough food this month, and availability of basic hygiene items has dropped to 15%. In addition to a polio outbreak, Gazans are suffering from malnutrition and treatable diseases due to “systematic dismantling of healthcare”from bombardments on civilians. “The scale of this devastating, man-made crisis in Gaza cannot be overstated,” said Congressman Carson. “Providing humanitarian aid to a starving nation – with funding Congress has appropriated year after year – should not be controversial. I urge my colleagues who care about basic human rights, the rights of pregnant women, and the wellbeing of innocent children to join our bill. UNRWA has t… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

Skorton, MD. “The nation’s medical schools, academic health systems, and teaching hospitals conduct approximately 60% of all NIH extramural research and are proud to pioneer many critical advances that bring the promise of better health to patients, families, and communities nationwide.” “Now, more than ever, it’s important to ensure strong funding growth for NIH so that today’s discoveries can culminate in major breakthroughs in medical research,” said AAMC Chief Scientific Officer Elena Fuentes-Afflick, MD, MPH. This project will prioritize fair and equitable placement to fill gaps left in the Indiana Department of Transportation Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan, which failed to adequately include urban and underserved communities like those in Indianapolis. It also failed to provide quantifiable inclusion of minority and disadvantaged businesses. Congressman Carson first outlined these concerns in a 2022 letter and has since worked with local partners and the federal Department of Transportation to advocate for more equitable distribution of EV infrastructure and was determined to support local efforts in the application for this grant. Electric vehicles could make up as much asnearly half of global car sales by 2035. In 2022, Congressman Carson voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, which included consumer tax breaks for EVs, including a $7,500 tax break for purchasing a new EV. On average, EVs can save consumers $800 - $1,000 annually on gasoline. Battery EVs are about40% less costly to maintain. Roughly one-third of Indianapolis’s citywide greenhouse gas emissions comes from the transportation sector, making the transition to more electric vehicles a part of the pathway to reducing pollution, improving regional air quality and public health, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 - as outlined in Thrive Indianapolis, the city’s sustainability and resilience action plan. “Throughout history, major American infrastructure projects -- like the formation of our interstate highway system --… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:36:13Z

Citizens leadership, U.S. Congressman André Carson, local Indianapolis leaders, and Deputy Administrator Tristan Brown of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) provided remarks commending the impact that projects like this one can have on a community. “Citizens continues to work toward improving our infrastructure, securing outside funding where we can for upgrades across our various utility systems,” said Jeffrey Harrison, President & CEO of Citizens Energy Group. “We’re building upon decades of pipeline safety improvements within our nearly 4,000-mile system by making this four-mile portion even more resistant to corrosion via new contemporary plastic pipeline.” Construction begins in 2024 on a portion of natural gas main in the Avondale Meadows neighborhood, generally along the Rural Street corridor between Fall Creek and 30th Street. The next two years will see additional construction along this same corridor south into the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood and at the site of a legacy natural gas main in the Far Eastside neighborhood installed more than 70 years ago. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver," said Congressman André Carson. "Indiana alone has already received $7.9 billion for necessary improvement to our roads, public transit, and airports. Now, we’re ensuring the safety of our neighborhoods by upgrading natural gas main lines – and it’s all thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which I proudly championed. Together, we can improve public health and safety and reduce methane emissions that could otherwise be a threat to our community for years to come.” Citizens was one of 37 rec… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:36:13Z

Mrvan announced a federal grant award for the City of La Porte Fire Department under the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the City of La Porte Fire Department will receive $128,315 to purchase diesel exhaust removal systems for all three fire stations to minimize exposure to harmful contaminants and carcinogens. In general, the AFG program assists fire departments in making critical improvements to operations and safety, equipping and training emergency personnel, and enhancing operational efficiencies. Congressman Mrvan stated, “Congratulations to the City of La Porte Fire Department on successfully securing this vital funding to improve protections for our first responders and ensure they have the resources to safely perform their duties. I will continue to do all I can to support our selfless first responders and their essential services to protect our region.” Andy Snyder, Fire Chief of the City of La Porte Fire Department, stated, “The La Porte Fire Department is extremely excited to receive funding to purchase diesel exhaust removal systems for each of the 3 stations. As a result, it will minimize firefighters’ exposure to harmful contaminants and carcinogens known to be associated with diesel exhaust emissions. Firefighters are at a much higher risk for several types of cancer just by the nature of the work they perform. One critical step to minimizing these increased risks is to remove the hazards known to cause them, which this grant award will most certainly do. I am very appreciative to our federal elected officials for continuing to fund the AFG program and ensure these federal dollars are returning to the citizens of La Porte.” For additional information on the Department of Homeland Security’s AFG program, click here. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:24:45Z

Congressman Mrvan stated, “Thank you to all of the students from Indiana’s First Congressional District who showcased their creativity in the Congressional Art Competition. Congratulations to Madalyn from Munster High School on your outstanding achievement and exceptional display of artistic talent.” Madalyn Martin stated, “I was working on adding a few pieces to my architecture portfolio for college and took a picture of this shop because I love the influence of Mexican architecture style on the building. I had been working on this painting in my free time for months and decided to use it as my submission for the Congressional Art Competition because I felt that the building style highlights the way that the culture of local people can impact the community as a whole.” Elena Lopez, Art Teacher at Munster High School, stated, “Madalyn Martin has a strong sense of line, color, surface and texture, of balancing and composing her personal works. She applied these as Costume Designer for the Munster HS Theatre, and in presentation of group works for Regional Art shows. She often uses mixed media that challenges the surfaces of her works, brings a fluidity, merging the 2D and 3D Design spaces into cohesive presentations and performances. This translation of design and constructed space will serve her well, as she plans on majoring in architecture at Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning.” Morgan Nolan, Principal of Munster High School, stated, “We are proud of Madalyn’s hard work and dedication to the arts, and this award is well deserved. Mrvan and Chairman Rick Crawford (AR-01, sent a letter to the Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, expressing concern about the department’s reconsideration of Vietnam’s non-market economy (NME) status in U.S. antidumping proceedings. As the letter points out, Vietnam remains a top-down, government-controlled economy. The country practices steel dumping by flooding the U.S. with heavily subsidized steel in violation of international trade standards, which harms domestic production. Vietnam is also known to be a platform for Chinese steel to circumvent U.S. trade remedy orders. This malicious behavior should not be rewarded by a beneficial change of status. In October, the Department of Commerce announced that it would begin reviewing Vietnam’s NME status. This announcement came shortly after Vietnam filed an official request to be considered a market economy. Commerce has 270 days to complete the review, which should occur in mid-July. The Interfaith Staff Prayer Room is available for staff and interns of all faiths to engage in prayer and meditation. The room is designed to accommodate multiple faiths, and opened this week in Room 467 of the Cannon House Office Building. “Every American should be able to practice their religion freely and openly,” said Congressman Carson. “Not only will this space accommodate the needs of the many diverse religions on Capitol Hill, it also encourages interfaith engagement – a key tenant to achieving a more peaceful, understanding community. We have much more in common than we do differences, and this space will reinforce that for decades of Congressional Members and staff.” “I am thrilled that, for the first time, staff of all faiths on Capitol Hill will have a dedicated place to gather for prayer and meditation,” said Congressman Brad Schneider. “This is a notable moment for the home of our federal legislature and a reflection of the respect and honor we all deserve as we practice our individual faith traditions. Working alongside the City of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO), IndyGo will use these funds to construct critical infrastructure and safety improvements along the Historic East section of the Blue Line bus rapid transit corridor. More specifically, these funds will be used to make a 4.7 mile stretch of East Washington Street between Highland and Edmondson avenues safer for all road users by investing directly in the following improvements: Roadway lane reconfigurations. Dedicated bus lanes. Upgraded sidewalks and crossings. Street and pedestrian markings. ADA compliant curb ramps. Signage and wayfinding. Transit signal priority and traffic signals. Eid al-Adha commemorates Abraham’s symbolic sacrifice of his son to God -- as referenced in the Quran, Old Testament, and New Testament -- and marks the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, called Hajj. Eid is of great importance to the United States’ over 3.5 million Muslims and approximately 1.8 billion Muslims around the world. “Muslim Americans are part of the fabric of our country,” said Congressman Carson. “My bill is about recognizing and uplifting these important holidays, but I also hope it sends a clear message to all Muslim Americans – you belong, and our community values you. As millions of Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid al-Adha, this bill is a chance to promote inclusion and tolerance of all people and all religions – the bedrock of our American values.” “Eid is celebrated by millions of people in the United States and around the world, marking symbolic periods of the year in the Islamic faith,” said Congresswoman Grace Meng. “As Muslim Americans begin celebrating Eid al-Adha on June 16, I am proud to join my colleagues in introducing this long overdue effort to add Eid to the calendar of federal holidays. Our city belongs to everyone, and IndyGo is expanding opportunity to all Indianapolis residents -- all while providing much-needed safety and infrastructure improvements.” “IndyGo is tremendously grateful to Congressman Carson for his tireless efforts and steadfast support as we continue to expand the community’s vision through the Blue Line,” said IndyGo Interim President and CEO Jennifer Pyrz. “IndyGo’s third bus rapid transit line will run 24 miles east to west across the city connecting Cumberland to the airport bringing safer, more reliable transportation along with new sidewalks, street paving, ADA curb ramps and more.” As a senior Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Congressman Carson has consistently advocated for expanded public transit, including through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – which will direct $1.2 trillion of federal funds towards transportation, energy, and climate infrastructure projects and create good-paying jobs. To date, $4.7 billion has been announced for Indiana project involving roads, bridges, public transit, ports, airport, electric school and transit buses, EV charging, and more. As our country’s first line of defense, the CIA must function efficiently and effectively. Like any federal agency, the CIA has a responsibility to prevent sexual harassment and assault and to hold perpetrators accountable. According to this report, the CIA failed on both counts. “Sexual harassment and assault are unfortunately prevalent in the intelligence community as well as in workplaces across the country. To address this serious issue, we must look at every level of the reporting and disciplinary processes. In my leadership capacity on the CIA Subcommittee, I’ve heard from survivors who described a confusing process for reporting sexual assault in the CIA and who felt reluctant to come forward without the promise of anonymity. My provisions in the Intelligence Authorization Act directly address those concerns, requiring the development of policies that protect employees’ confidentiality. However, one of the best ways we can encourage survivors to come forward is by setting a clear example: those who have been proven to perpetrate sexual harassment and assault will be held accountable. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T20:47:55Z

Mrvan introduced the Stop Mexico’s Steel Surge Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. The purpose of this legislation is to protect American workers and the domestic steel industry by reinstating certain tariffs on steel imports from Mexico and bring Mexico into compliance with the requirements of the 2019 Joint Agreement on Steel and Aluminum. Specifically, this Stop Mexico’s Steel Surge Act would reinstate the Section 232 tariffs on steel imports from Mexico at 25 percent for no less than a year. The measure would specify that the administration may lift these tariffs once the Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative certify that Mexico has adopted policies bringing it into compliance with the 2019 Agreement. This legislation also would allow the administration to impose certain quotas or tariff rate quotas on specific goods that have experienced major surges. Congressman Mrvan stated, “As Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, I know that it is imperative that we do everything we can to defend American steelworkers against unfair trade practices. I am proud to collaborate in a bipartisan manner with my House and Senate colleagues on this initiative to ensure that our domestic steel industry will compete on a level playing field.” Rep. Crawford stated, “Mexico’s practice of steel dumping is a flagrant breach of our trade agreement and has caused significant harm to our steel industry. We cannot allow bad actors to take advantage of trade agreements by attacking one specific American industry. It’s time to put our foot down and put tariffs in place to prevent Mexico from flooding our markets and causing further damage to American steel manufacturers.” The House legislation is cosponsored by Representatives James R. The letter was signed by 50 Members of Congress. In the letter, Members emphasize the urgent need for humanitarian relief to Gaza following the deaths of over 29,000 Palestinians, with more injured and without access to functioning hospitals. The letter also expresses concern for the allegations against a small number of UNRWA employees and points out that independent investigations are currently being conducted, and these allegations have not yet been substantiated. The letter highlights the UN established UNRWA to provide basic humanitarian needs to displaced Palestinian refugees, including food, water, and shelter. The current humanitarian crisis in Gaza must be addressed, and the letter warns that without UNRWA funding, it will only get worse. The letter also states that no other organization or agency will be able to fill the “humanitarian void” if UNRWA no longer receives funding, leaving millions of men, women, and children vulnerable and at risk of starvation, disease, and death from lack of medical care. The full letter can be found here. A full list of the broad range of human rights organizations who endorsed this letter can be seen here. “Denying millions of innocent civilians shelter, food, water, sanitary conditions and healthcare is simply cruel,” said Congressman Carson. “The campaign to discredit UNRWA’s track record because of unsubstantiated allegations, against a small fraction of UNRWA’s employees, attempts to distract from the reality of a devastating, urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Human rights organizations and advocacy groups have documented concerning acts of violence performed by members of the Armed Forces of the DRC and militias against ethnic minorities that may meet one or more criteria for genocide under Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Targets are primarily Rwandophone communities, or those whose mother tongue is Kinyarwanda. Armed groups and often abusive security forces continue to carry out massacres, abductions, rape and sexual violence, recruitment of children, and other attacks on civilians. “Individuals fleeing violence from the Democratic Republic of the Congo make up one of Indiana’s largest refugee populations,” said Congressman Carson. “The U.S. has strategic interest in this region, but we also have a moral obligation to stand up to human rights abuses whenever and wherever they occur. I remain concerned that the situation in the DRC has not received the international attention it merits for such grave acts of violence. I invite all my colleagues to join me in this resolution and hold perpetrators accountable.” The voices of the people in the Democratic Republic of Congo frequently go unheard both in the United States and on the international stage,” said Amber Maze, co-founder and executive director of Indiana-based Crane Center for Mass Atrocity Prevention. “However, violence targeting ethnic minorities, especially the Rwandophone, Tutsi, and Banyamulenge communities, has been on the rise since the resurgence of the M-23 armed group. Politicians have exploited anti-Rwandophone sentiments to bolster their political agendas, exacerbating the situation. It is imperative we address the needs of those impacted by this conflict. Through this resolution, the United States has the opportunity to remind Congolese officials of the… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T20:21:00Z

Mrvan’s introduction is available here, and the full statement as prepared for delivery is below. “It is my honor to recognize our next distinguished speaker, and while I have not personally been to Scranton, Pennsylvania, I know that the President has been to my hometown in Hammond, Indiana. “I do believe that these two communities have many similarities, comprising of working class families who know the value of hard work, who volunteer their time to charitable causes and look out for one another, who appreciate honesty, fair play, and expect others to do so as well, who understand the importance of preserving the land, and who know the grounding value of family, community, and attending church on Sundays. “I am so very grateful for this upbringing provided by my family, for my years of Catholic grade school at St. Catherine of Siena, under Pastor Pallone. “I know I am not alone in these formative experiences, and that this upbringing is shared by many in this room and many throughout our nation. “Just this past weekend in the City of Gary, I had the honor to join parishioners at Temple of Deliverance in Christ, and I would be remiss if I did not share that Bishop Warren and the entire congregation prayed for enlightenment for Congress and the Administration, and that we work together to make a more perfect union. “Thank you, President Biden for being here with us this morning. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming my friend, the 46th President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T20:21:00Z

A video of the Congressman delivering the statement on the House floor is available here, and the full statement as prepared for delivery is below. “I rise today to express my deep frustration with the unfortunate approach that the House majority is pursuing this week with regard to immigration legislation. “On a personal note, this past week, I held a series of Community Forums throughout Indiana’s First Congressional District, and at each one, the topic of immigration reform and the challenge of securing our Southern border was front and center. “Constituents throughout the region expressed great concern regarding the national security implications related to the increase in migrants, as well as the great need for increased border security agents, for administrative judges, for technology to monitor our border, and for resources to address drug and human trafficking. “More broadly, there was a real desire to comprehensively solve this problem in a bipartisan manner, requiring not only government and federal contractor employers but all employers to utilize the E-Verify system to ensure no labor is being exploited, as well as honor our commitment to Dreamers. “At our Community Forums, we also discussed the devastating impacts of fentanyl, highlighting how our district is home to an international port of entry that must be secure. In my prior position as a local elected official, I often hosted narcan training sessions. I recollect one such program during a polar vortex with 60 below wind chills and no less than 150 individuals attended a training session because drug traffickers flooded our region with fentanyl laced heroin. My office helped assist with burials for many of those who lost the struggle with addiction, and I carry each one of those with me. This is real life, and I pull from these experiences every day for my resolve to move forward with real legislative solutions. “We are not solving the … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T23:46:48Z

The resolution further notes the religious discrimination experienced by Muslim Americans and stresses the “need for public education, awareness, and policies that are culturally competent when describing, discussing, or addressing the impacts of being Muslim American in all aspects of the society of the United States.” “This resolution pays tribute to a community that has enriched the fabric of our nation with their faith, culture, and contributions,” said Senator Booker.“Every day, and especially the month of January, we must celebrate Muslim Americans and their heritage while also working together to combat the continued prejudice and discrimination their community faces.” “As one of just three Members of the House Muslim Caucus, I’m proud to work with Senator Booker to introduce Muslim-American Heritage Month resolutions in the House and the Senate,” said Representative Carson. “Our country is a rich tapestry of different races, ethnicities, and religions, and Muslim-American Heritage Month would recognize an important piece of that fabric. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for the Town of Burns Harbor from the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program. According to the DOT, the Town of Burns Harbor will receive $120,000 under the SS4A Grant program, which aims to improve roadway safety by supporting communities in developing plans to implement infrastructure projects designed to reduce transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries. Congressman Mrvan stated, “Congratulations to the leaders of the Town of Burns Harbor for their successful efforts to secure this federal resource. I appreciate that this funding will enhance your dedicated initiatives to improve the safety of people, commuters, and commerce traveling throughout Burns Harbor and our region.” Burns Harbor Town Council President, Jennifer McHargue stated, "Local roads are dangerous. With high volumes of semi-trucks and cars passing by daily, the Town is concerned with making Burns Harbor more safe, especially along US 12/20 intersections and at-grade CSX crossings. We will engage residents and a range of partners to understand the safety issues and find innovative ways to build connections that reduce accidents and fatalities." Burns Harbor Redevelopment Commission President, Roseann Bozak stated, "Burns Harbor is a growing community. As the population increases, the demand for connected neighborhoods, parks and trails rises. Families most often drive to in-town destinations, like Lakeland Park and the Indiana Dunes National Park, because there is no safe way to travel by foot, bike or motorized wheelchair. Safe and well-connected neighborhoods, businesses and recreation will be a key driver for the long-term economic growth of Burns Harbor and the Northwest Indiana region." Mrvan M001214 mrvan.house.gov mrvan https://mrvan.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper Washington, DC – Yesterday, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan submitted testimony before the International Trade Commission (ITC) during their hearing on tin mill products from Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The text of Congressman Mrvan’s testimony submitted to the ITC is below. Thank you for the opportunity to provide testimony today in strong support of the anti-dumping and countervailing duty petitions filed by the domestic industry, including Cleveland-Cliffs and the United Steelworkers, on tin mill products from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Indiana’s First Congressional District is home to a robust steel industry and workforce, and the livelihood of workers in this district and across the country rely on the full enforcement and protection of our U.S. trade laws. As you are aware, the illegal dumping and subsidization of tin mill products has already had a detrimental impact on workers in Northwest Indiana. Specifically, U.S. Steel idled its East Chicago tin finishing plant in 2019, which employed more than 360 workers, and in December 2022, the company idled its tin mill operations at the Gary Works facility, displacing another 244 workers. Today, hot-rolled steel made by our incredible union workers at Cleveland Cliffs’ integrated steel plants in Northwest Indiana are sent to their facility in Weirton, West Virginia, to produce tin and chromium coated sheet steel products. I would highlight that from 2020 to 2022, tin mill imports from countries under discussion today, including China, Canada, and Germany, increased by more than 25 percent, which prompted the loss of an additional 300 American workers in June 2023. As the Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, I am fighting every day to ensure that everything possible is done to protect the ability of American steelworkers to continue to support the strength of our national economy and our national security. As you review the facts of… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T23:46:48Z
