Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to increase the amount of money in a second round of direct payments to $2,000. Michigan families are hurting and need a survival check to help put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, and pay the heating bill. Democrats and Republicans in the House came together to pass $2,000 stimulus checks for the American people, but Senator McConnell just blocked the bill. Our families are in desperate need of help and Senate Republicans are standing in the way. ### Previous Article 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) released the following statement after the House passed the CASH Act to bring the stimulus payments to the American people up from $600 to $2,000: I have supported meaningful direct payments to American families since the beginning of this crisis. Democratic leadership fought for those payments in these latest negotiations, which involved the president's administration, but Republicans rejected our demands and the president was absent from the playing field, more focused on spreading lies about the election results than the tackling the challenges working families are facing. House Democrats remained more than willing to take his apparent support for $2,000 payments seriously and to bring an increased direct payment bill to the floor. Unfortunately, on Christmas Eve, House Republicans delivered a big lump of coal and blocked this bill's passage, just as their party had blocked larger payments during negotiations for the COVID relief package. Today, we took a recorded vote with Democrats voting overwhelmingly to provide larger checks to struggling American families. Now, we will see whether Republicans who control the Senate will allow Americans to receive larger checks or will block them. This entire ordeal was typical of a president who from the beginning projected a message of faux populism and accomplished absolutely nothing for working people over the past four years. In this Congress, House Democrats passed a $15 an hour minimum wage, comprehensive labor law reform, job training measures and much more that would make life better for American people and rebuild the middle class. Trump got his party behind none of this and Senator Majority Leader blocked all of it. President Trump's only legislative accomplishment was a major tax giveaway to billionaires and corporations. Who is on working people's side? In 2021, House and Senate Democrats will work tirelessly with the Biden Administration on our economic recovery in a way that puts poor and middle-class people … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The president's inaction made an already stressful holiday season worse for Michigan families and small businesses. I strongly support $2,000 direct payments to Americans. Democrats have consistently pushed for higher payments, but Republicans have for months opposed larger stimulus checks. As millions of Americans this holiday season struggle to put food on the table or keep a roof over their head, Congress must do more to provide relief. Democrats and President Trump support $2,000 direct paymentsnow Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must allow for a vote on this relief immediately. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
https://lawrence.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/us-rep-lawrence-votes-override-president-trump-s-veto-approve-2000 U.S. Rep. Lawrence Votes to Override President Trumps Veto; Approve $2,000 Economic Impact Payments 2020-12-28 2020 2020-12 Democrat Senate MI Brenda Lawrence L000581 lawrence.house.gov     legacy Washington, D.C. Today, Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to override President Donald Trump's reckless veto of the annual National Defense Authorization Act, as well as the passage of H.R. 9051, the Caring for Americans with Supplemental Help Act of 2020, legislation that would increase the economic impact payments authorized by the new COVID-19 stimulus package from $600 to $2,000 per person. Following four years of chaos, the House of Representatives convened to respond to President Trump's latest erratic whim by voting to override his remarkably dangerous veto of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), said Rep. Lawrence. For nearly six consecutive decades, Congress has passed the NDAA to strengthen our national security and provide for the heroic men and women who have and continue to serve this country. Even though this year's iteration passed in veto-proof margins in both chambers, President Trump vetoed the legislation because he is more concerned with defending deceased Confederate generals and continuing his ongoing feud with Twitter rather than providing our service members with a pay raise, giving paid parental leave for thousands of federal employees, and investing in our cybersecurity, mere days after possibly the largest cyber-attack in our nation's history. Today, I was proud to stand with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to reaffirm that our national security and service members are more important than President Trump's unrelated, petty grievances. Last week, in a bipartisan manner, Congress passed our annual government funding legislation combined with another COVID-19 stimulus package, Rep. Lawrence continued. Instead of promptly signing that legislation into law, President Trump's cruel decision to wait several days allowed federal unemployment provisions to expire, causing further hardships on millions of Americans. However, for once, I do agree with something President Trump saidthe ec… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

https://dankildee.house.gov/media/press-releases/new-kildee-initiative-help-low-income-families-water-bills-passed-congress New Kildee Initiative to Help Low-Income Families With Water Bills Passed Congress 2020-12-25 2020 2020-12 Democrat Senate MI Dan Kildee K000380 dankildee.house.gov     legacy FLINTCongressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced a new federal programto help low-income families pay their water bills and reduce their water utility rates. As part of the recent coronavirus relief package passed by Congress, Kildee was able to secure $638 million in federal funding to create a newprogram, through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to provide grants to states and tribes and help ratepayers. The Low-Income Household Drinking Water and Wastewater Emergency Assistance Program will provide much-needed relief to low-income families that pay a high proportion of their household income on water utility services. This new program comes as the country continues to face a health and economic crisis, where families have struggled to pay their water bills. Even before the pandemic, manycommunitiesincluding Flintfaced high water rates and lacked access to clean and affordable water.A recent survey of the 500 largest water systems in the country found that on average, Flint residents paid about $864 a year for water service nearly double the national average. Every family should have access to clean, affordable drinking water, especially during a pandemic. In Congress, I fought to create this new program to help provide direct relief to families facing high water bills, Congressman Kildee said. My hometown of Flint knows all too well the consequences of failing to invest in our water infrastructure and ensure clean drinking water. Families in Flint and across the country deserve relief from high water bills. Congressman Kildee has been a strong advocate for investing and improving Michigan's water infrastructure. During the coronavirus pandemic, Congressman Kildeewrote a lettertocongressional leaders urging that any legislative relief packages to contain the spread of the coronavirus must include relief for Americans facing high water bills and water shutoffs. Previously, in 2019, he introduced landmark legislation, theWater Justice Act, wh… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This holiday season, families arebeing forced to make incredibly difficult decisions, such as whether they should keep their lights on or buy groceries, said Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. They are suffering to no fault of their own. We must protect public health and the economic well-being of those we serve. Providing $2,000 survival checks would give those struggling right now a lifeline as we continue to fight to defeat COVID-19. It's time for Trump to stop bluffing and get the members of his party in lineso that the government can provide thislong overdue relief topeople across the country during this time of great need. While President Trump has indicated support for the $2k direct payments, it is highly doubtful he has done anything to encourage congressional Republicans to support the effort. This morning on Christmas Eve, House Republicans blocked an attempt to provide survival checks. Families in my district and all across the country are struggling under the weight of this unprecedented crisis, saidCongresswoman Ayanna Pressley. We've been fighting all along for robust survival checks to help people meet their most basic needs, and the broad support that has emerged is a testament to the power of the people and the urgency of this moment. $2,000 in direct cash assistance will help families weather the crisis while we continue fighting for additional relief that meets the scale and scope of the hurt so many are feeling. Let's get it done. It's long overdue that Congress approves COVID-19 relief that actually m… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

He has vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) not out of concern for the security of the American people, but for himself and himself alone. He's fixated on two things: repealing an obscure law so that he can spread dangerous lies to the American people unabated; and blocking the renaming of military bases that commemorate Confederate leaders, i.e., traitors to our country. There may be no more fitting end to his presidency: a last-ditch attempt to create his own realitya far cry from that of American families struggling to get by during this pandemic and economic crisisand to continue to stoke racial animus in order to divide our communities rather than heal our wounds, because he believes that division serves his political interests. And now he is even threatening to veto a bipartisan COVID relief package over a charade to demand $2,000 stimulus checks that Democrats support wholeheartedly. The only thing standing between those checks and the American people are Republicans in Congress who, like the president, are focused less on struggling working families and more on pleasing their corporate donors to suit their political interests. I have made no secret of my desire to get our country's bloated military budget in order and invest in our schools, our infrastructure and the pressing needs of working families like the ones in Michigan's 9th District. That is why I voted against the NDAA just weeks ago. But I will help override Donald Trump's veto in order to reject his depredations and slam the door on a shameful chapter animated by one person's selfishness and malice. Let us move ahead and govern based on the best interest of the American people, not Donald Trump. ##… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

TheFlint Registrywas created and funded by Congress in 2016 in the wake of the city's water crisis. The Flint Registry is a community-based effort to identify individuals exposed to lead during the Flint water crisis and improve their health and development through connections to health care and other resources. To date, theFlintRegistryhas enrolled over 10,500 people and completed over 13,500 referrals. Referrals have connected Flint families to critical services like health care, nutrition, early education, lead elimination and more. Funding for the Flint Registry was set to run out on July 30, 2021. While theU.S. House passed legislation in Julyto fund the Flint Registry, the bill was not taken up in the U.S. Senate. Subsequently, Congressman Kildee, Senator Stabenow and Senator Peters worked to include funding for the Flint Registry in must-pass appropriations bills to ensure continued funding. The Flint Registry plays a critical role in Flint's recovery from the water crisis by connecting families to the services they need to minimize the impact of lead on their health, said Congressman Kildee. I am proud that Republicans and Democrats came together to fund the Flint Registry. This important public health program is critical for Flint families, especially during the ongoing pandemic.I remain committed to working with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to maintain support for this program for many years to come. It is my hope that President Trump signs this bill into law right away. With 10 of his standalone bills having been signed into law or awaiting the President's signature since 2019, Peters has continuously built on his record of effectiveness and bipartisanship. Additionally, Peters: In addition to his legislative efforts, Peters' office has also been able to assist Michiganders this year by returning more than $1.7 million in federal benefits that they were owed by resolving their cases. For the President of the United States to veto this bill that provides a pay raise for our troops, enhances our cybersecurity and strengthens our national security is reckless and dangerous particularly as our nation faces ever-evolving threats, including from this pandemic. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I was proud to work on this legislation which also supports Michigan's growing defense footprint and manufacturers. I will be voting to override this veto, and I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do the same. The legislation includes provisions Peters authored and supported to benefit servicemembers and their families, support Michigan's defense sector, shore up our cyber defenses and strengthen our national security. ### Print Email Tweet Next Article Previous Article 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-05), incoming Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Albio Sires (NJ-08), Chair of the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security and Trade Subcommittee, released the following statement on recent developments in Haiti. As members of the House of Representatives, we have spent recent weeks working urgently to rush relief to the American people amidst the COVID-19 public health and economic disasters. We want our friends in Haiti to know, however, that we are still watching what is unfolding there with growing concern. Haitian President Jovenel Mose is pursuing an increasingly authoritarian course of action, issuing a series of recent decrees that include creating an extra-constitutional domestic intelligence force. His latest actions are reminiscent of past anti-democratic abuses the Haitian people have endured, including the run-up to the Duvalier dictatorship. We will not stand idly by while Haiti devolves into chaos. When the 117th Congress convenes, supporting democratic actors in Haiti will be a top concern for this committee. We will work urgently with the incoming Biden administration to develop a U.S. policy that prioritizes the rights and aspirations of the Haitian people and supports a credible, Haitian-led transition back to democratic order. We will engage international allies and institutions to coordinate a multilateral strategy to address the ongoing crisis in Haiti and pursue accountability for Haitian officials who commit human rights violations and acts of corruption. As members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, we consider it our responsibility to monitor the events in Haiti and work in close collaboration with Haitian civil society organizations and citizens of goodwill that seek peace and democracy in their country. I have long advocated that the Lead and Copper Rule is outdated and needs to be updated. But today's rule allows millions of toxic lead pipes to remain in the ground. Sadly, it will do nothing to stop the next Flint water crisis from happening in other communities across the country. Instead of taking bold steps to produce a new rule that is based on science, this rule is based merely on convenience. Doctors and experts tell us there is no safe level of lead. Yet this new rule allows high levels of lead in drinking water. The Trump administration's new rule actually allows toxic lead pipes to remain in operation, even after they are identified and there are high levels of lead in the water, for up to three decades. Simply put, this new rule is too weak to protect the health of the American people. The Flint water crisis should have taught policymakers at all levels of government that we must get serious about removing lead from our water systems. In Congress, I successfully secured $170 million to help Flint be able to replace all of its lead service lines. But the Trump administration's weak Lead and Copper Rule leaves millions of families vulnerable to lead exposure in their drinking water. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
https://slotkin.house.gov/media/press-releases/after-months-long-push-bipartisan-covid-relief-package-slotkin-votes-extend-aid After Months-Long Push for Bipartisan COVID Relief Package, Slotkin Votes to Extend Aid to Michiganders 2020-12-22 2020 2020-12 Democrat House MI Elissa Slotkin S001208 slotkin.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) voted today to deliver vital relief to Michiganders suffering from the COVID-19 crisis. The package, based on a compromise, emergency relief proposal Slotkin put forth with the Problem Solvers Caucus earlier this month, follows Slotkin's months-long, bipartisan push to revive stalled negotiations on a federal COVID relief package, to alleviate suffering felt by Michigan families, businesses, and communities due to the pandemic. After months of stalled negotiations on COVID relief, our bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus worked together with counterparts in the Senate, and came up with a $900 billion emergency relief package, designed as a bridge to get folks to the spring, Slotkin said. Our bill jump-started negotiations and served as the basis for the hard-fought compromise package we voted on today. The 25 Democrats and 25 Republicans of the Problem Solvers Caucus said we would not go home for Christmas without a deal. Even if it meant dragging our tree and our presents into the office, we would not rest until we delivered relief for the American public. Today, we are making good on that commitment. This bipartisan package was designed to get us through the next few months, Slotkin continued. It will deliver relief to Michiganders who need it now in the form of direct stimulus payments, an extension of federal unemployment benefits, a new round of PPP loans for the hardest-hit businesses and streamlined loan forgiveness for smaller loans, money to get the new vaccine out and into communities, and so much more. Unfortunately, it doesn't include aid to state and local governments risking layoffs for first responders and tough cuts to basic services while leaving out dedicated grants for our local restaurants. That said, I'm still hopeful that in the new Congress come January, we can come back to the issue of state and local aid, and other relief today's bill doesn't include. The members sent the letter in advance of expected congressional hearings early next year on the waiver Austin would require to serve as Secretary of Defense. The full text of the letter can be found here, and follows: December 18, 2020 Secretary-designee Austin, Congratulations on your historic nomination to serve as Secretary of Defense. As Members of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, we are committed to a productive working relationship with the Secretary. Our nation faces a range of distinct national security challenges, and, should you be confirmed, you will lead the Department of Defense and its more than 1.2 million active duty service members, 800,000 reservists, and 750,000 civilian personnel during a critical time. We have tremendous respect for your experience, your talent, and your service to our nation. We are grateful for your willingness to continue that service. And we recognize the truly historic nature of your nomination, especially at a time that so many segments of our society, including the military, are confronting issues of equality and justice. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines of color have fought for this country since its founding, and currently constitute over 40 percent of active duty service members. Your nomination is both well-deserved based on your experience, and a long-deserved recognition of the men and women who have fought and died for this country. But separate from your exceptional qualifications, your selection raises fundamental issues that go beyond any one nomination, no matter how qualified or historic the nominee. As you know, civilian control over the military is a fundamental principle of American democracy, dating back to the founding of the United States. As part of his examination, Peters is seeking information, including documents, communications and interviews, related to the federal government's Coronavirus pandemic preparedness and response. As the top Democrat on the Senate's primary oversight committee, Peters is seeking detailed information from the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, State Department and the Office of Management and Budget to analyze the challenges and flaws in the Trump Administration's pandemic preparedness and response efforts. Peters intends to use this information to identify critical reforms to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response to prevent future pandemics from wreaking havoc on our nation's health, safety and economic security. Congressional oversight of the executive branch is now necessary to understand and assess the U.S.'s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and any needed reforms to combat this and future pandemics. U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Roy Blunt (R-MO) today announced that they successfully secured $850 million in funding for the national Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic Expansion Grants program in theConsolidated Appropriations Act of 2021,which includes emergency COVID-19 assistance and federal funding for FY 2021. CCBHCs provide a comprehensive set of high-quality services including 24/7/365 crisis services; outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment services; immediate screenings, risk assessments, and diagnoses; and care coordination with emergency rooms, law enforcement, and veteran groups. For years, Stabenow and Blunt have led the effort to transform the way mental health and addiction treatmentservices are delivered in communities across the country. In the past year, they secured $200 million in the FY 2020 appropriations bill and $250 million in theCoronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Actfor the national Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic Expansion Grants program. In Michigan, there are more than 210 school-based health centers that play a crucial role in providing basic health services for thousands of students who have limited access to medical care outside of school.School-based health centers provide a combination of primary care, mental health care, substance abuse counseling, case management, dental health, nutrition education, health education and health promotion activities. School-based health centers play an important role in providingcare to so many children who don't haveaccess to a family doctor, said Senator Stabenow. They are also meeting a critical need for mental health services for children impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Today, the Senate has acted to support these health centers that are a crucial part of our health care system. Children across West Virginia rely on the primary care, mental health services, health education, and drug addiction prevention counseling available within many of our schools. This makes it crucial that our school-based health centers receive our full support, said Senator Capito. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the important role our school services play in the development of our young people. I'm thankful that our legislation was included in the year-end package and that many of our school-based health centers will be eligible to receive this vital assistance through 2026. … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Thanks to theirsuccessful bipartisan push in 2015, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced in November 2016 that Medicare would begin covering new care plans in 2017, effectively implementing the HOPE for Alzheimer's Act. The Improving HOPE for Alzheimer's Act requires the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct outreach to make more health care providers aware of this important benefit and to report back on rates of utilization and barriers to access. Care plans are an important tool to ensure that those living with Alzheimer's disease and their loved ones who help care for them every day have the support they need to cope with this devastating disease, said Senator Stabenow. The Improving HOPE for Alzheimer's Act will help make sure patients, their families, and their health care providers know about and can take advantage of the available resources. "It is imperative that those living with Alzheimer's disease and their families receive the resources they need, including information about treatment options and what medical and community services are available, said Senator Collins. Fortunately, following our advocacy, CMS implemented a new rule in 2018 that allows Medicare beneficiaries to receive a care planning session. Today Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), Vice Chair of the House Education & Labor Committee, released the following statement after the House passed an omnibus spending bill that included COVID-19 relief for small businesses and working families and Rep. Levin's bipartisan bill H.R. 7933, the COVID-19 WIC Safety and Modernization Act: Almost nine months since we passed the CARES Act and more than seven months after I voted with my Democratic colleagues to pass the Heroes Act, my Republican colleagues have finally agreed to send additional COVID relief to Americans. Let me be clear: the GOP focus on keeping the topline number low rather than on the number offamilies we keep in their homes, workers that stay on the job and small businesses that reopen is backwards, and this shortsightedness will have a lasting impact on our recovery. Nevertheless, our Democratic leadership bargained hard for Americans to see some measure of help from their government before the New Year, and I voted for this without hesitation. I am so grateful that my bill, the COVID-19 WIC Safety and Modernization Act, was included in the final omnibus package and is on its way to the president's desk to be signed into law. This important bill will establish a taskforce at the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help the Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program innovate to meet the safety needs of WIC families during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond through programs like curbside pick-up and online delivery. This is a huge win for the growing number of women and children in Macomb and Oakland Counties, and across the country who rely on WIC for nutritious food. Since the onset of the pandemic, I have written other legislation and lifted up the voices of my constituents to protect our workers, our communities and our vital public services. This pandemic is not over. Michiganders still need our help to get through this pandemic, Congressman Kildee said. While a safe and effective vaccine brings us hope, the coronavirus is still ravaging our country. This past week, we witnessed more deaths from COVID-19 over a single 24-hour period than at any other point during this pandemic. This additional economic relief for workers, families and small businesses is long overdue. I strongly support additional economic stimulus payments to families, extended unemployment insurance benefits for unemployed workers, additional relief for small businesses and more resources to help with the distribution of coronavirus vaccines. While this bipartisan compromise does not include everything I would have hoped for, it is a down payment that will provide much-needed relief to those struggling. I look forward to working with the incoming Biden administration to provide additional relief to struggling Americans in the weeks ahead. Thisrelief package will: Distribute Direct Payments to Americans:The bill will provide a new round of direct payments worth up to $600 per adult and child, also ensuring that mixed-status families receive payments. Extend Unemployment Benefits:The bill will extend federal pandemic jobless insurance programs by 11 weeks and provide a $300 per week additional federal unemployment benefit for three months. Provide Additional Funding for Small Businesses:The bill will provide eligible small businesses, non-profits and live event venues with an additional $315 billion in the form of emergency loans and grants that can be forgiven if businesses keep workers on the payroll, instead of laying them off. Stevens S001215 stevens.house.gov stevens https://stevens.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement after voting for H.R. 133, Omnibus Appropriations and Emergency Coronavirus Relief. “Too many Michiganders and Americans have endured a global pandemic and unprecedented economic crisis for more than nine months now. Tragically, over 310,000 Americans have lost their lives due to COVID-19, while millions more have lost their livelihoods. As we head into 2021, millions of families are struggling to pay their rent or put food on the table, through no fault of their own. State and municipal governments across the country are facing severe budget shortfalls as they attempt to address an unprecedented crisis while maintaining vital services for our communities. Despite the urgent need for additional stimulus, the federal government has failed to enact meaningful relief for the American people for several critical months. “While I will support this bipartisan compromise, I remain frustrated that it took so long to reach this agreement in a moment of crisis. I want to make it clear to my colleagues and constituents that our work is not done. The first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are being distributed. There is more reason than ever to support the American people and ensure their safety in the months to come. In the 117th Congress, we have a responsibility to pass additional relief to aid vaccine production and distribution, provide direct support for struggling state and local governments, secure paid leave benefits for American workers, and support nationwide economic recovery efforts.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-06-28T00:42:23Z

Our society grinded to a halt as we grappled with the worst public health crisis in our lifetimes. The COVID-19 pandemichas brought loss and suffering to communities and families at every corner. Many of our neighbors did not have the chance to say goodbye to their loved ones and we will forever have to depend only on the memories of those who we've lost and were cornerstones of our lives and neighborhoods. To effectively combat this pandemic, people across the country have made the effort to stay home, they've been laid off, andthey've sacrificed as much as they could so that their government could protect them.As elected representatives, it is our responsibility to show up for our residents in time of need. We must protect public healthandsafeguardthe economic well-being of families. That means providing robust direct payments to ensurefamilies can pay their bills, put food on the table, and protect their families. That means providing adequate unemployment assistance, extending eviction and utility shutoff moratoriums, and providing assistance to our state and local governments, who are at the forefront of dealing with this pandemic. Today, I voted against the latest COVID-19 relief legislation because it is woefully inadequate in addressing the needs of people. I have watched as many of my colleagues rush to provide billions to corporations and wealthy individuals, while admonishing the needs of the majority of families. Republicans continue to do all they can do to poison our society further with corporate greed, while abandoning the very people they are supposed to be working for. This is evident by the inclusion of the three martini lunch' tax giveaway. A bipartisan bill backed byU.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, to save taxpayer dollars by requiring the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ensure more effective use and management of its advance contracts for goods and services is headed to the President's desk to be signed into law. The bill gives states and local governments flexibility to coordinate with FEMA and allow them to secure contracts for recovery efforts before a disaster strikes. Having advance contracts for debris removal and other disaster response efforts not only saves taxpayer dollars, it also allows communities to move quickly following a disaster and get on the road to recovery as soon as possible. Planning ahead to respond to natural disasters can help streamline recovery efforts and save taxpayers in Michigan and across the country millions of dollars in the long run, said Senator Peters.I was proud to work with my colleagues on these bipartisan and commonsense reforms to help communities be better prepared to respond when disaster strikes and ensure they can quickly access the resources they need for a speedy recovery. The Federal Advance Contracts Enhancement (FACE) Actwill require FEMA to ensure more effective use and management of its advance contracts process by incorporating the U.S. Government Accountability Office's (GAO) recommendations from its report titled,2017 Disaster Contracting: Actions Needed to Better Ensure More Effective Use and Management of Advance Contracts. These recommendations will ensure that federal preparedness actions are coordinated to prevent gaps in recovery efforts from occurring. U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is pressing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to ensure that Michigan ports, particularly the Port of Monroe, are treated fairly and held to the same standards as other ports. The Port of Monroe has been restricted by CBP's Detroit field office from accepting international break bulk cargo countering nearly 90 years of practice since the Port of Monroe began operations in 1932 unless the Port invested in significant and costly screening technology and infrastructure upgrades at their own expense. Other Great Lakes ports have not been subjected to the same restrictions. As you know, Michigan has active air, land, and sea ports of entry that are critical to the state and national economy. Despite having engaged CBP since 2016 on issues facing the Port of Monroe and unequal application of policy at different Great Lakes ports, insufficient progress has been made to ensure that Michigan ports are being treated fairly by CBP,wrote Peters. Peters continued:I understand that Field Offices and Port Directors require standards to have some degree of flexibility to respond to the unique characteristics of their jurisdictions, however there must also be clear and consistent standards nationwide for sea ports and other stakeholders to conduct business with levels of assurance. CBP implementation of policy for incoming commerce and travel at ports of entry can have severe impacts on communities that rely on economic activity from cross-border activity or trade. Small businesses have been forced to shutter or are barely staying afloat. Workers are out of jobs through no fault of their own and are stressed about feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads. Health care workers are exhausted pressed to their breaking points from caring for COVID patients. Let's be clear: this deal does not go nearly far enough. There's much more to be done, particularly to assist communities facing budget shortfalls and forced to make difficult cuts to essential services. But there is also no question that Michiganders need help and they need help immediately. This package provides important relief to help us get through these next few difficult months, from vaccine distribution to small business support to direct payments to put money in the pockets of struggling Americans, expanded unemployment assistance and resources for schools. The bipartisan bill will reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which is set to expire at the end of FY 2021, for another five years. The bill increases the current authorization level from $300 million to $375 million in FY 2022 and increases funding by $25 million per year until it reaches $475 million in FY 2026. The legislation passed the House earlier this year and now heads to the President's desk. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which I authored in 2010, has been a major success story that has been critical to addressing the threats that face our beloved Great Lakes. In Michigan, this program has helped clean up contamination, restore wetlands, and fight invasive species, but there is much more to be done. The good news is that Republicans and Democrats have come together in a bipartisan way to reinvest in this important program, said Senator Stabenow. I've seen firsthand in Michigan how successful the GLRI is towards protecting the Great Lakes, said Senator Peters. We must protect the Great Lakes for future generationsit's not only a source of drinking water for millions but an economic driver for our country. I'll continue working to ensure that we have the resources needed to preserve the Great Lakes. U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) released the following statement regarding the significant cyberattack carried out against government and private networks: I am deeply concerned by the ongoing penetration of U.S. government and corporate computer networks by a sophisticated foreign attacker. I have been monitoring this situation carefully since last week, and after receiving a classified briefing yesterday, two things stand out to me. First: it's clear that we have a lot of work ahead of us to protect our country's cybersecurity. On the House Armed Services Committee, we made the NDAA one of the most significant cybersecurity bills to ever hit the President's desk. It specifically strengthens our ability to hunt for these very same threats across federal networks, and helps the Pentagon protect our national security systems. So, the President should end his veto threats and sign that bill. Second: We have to strengthen our defenses against cyber threats, while also making clear that those who try to attack us will be held accountable. This is one of the most serious breaches we have seen in our country, but unless those who carried it out face consequences, it won't be the last. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Emergency response teams are frequently exposed to harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in firefighting foams as they work to keep communities safe. PFAS substances have been linked to a number of health problems, including certain cancers. TheProtecting Firefighters from Adverse Substances (PFAS) Actdirects federal agencies to developbest practices, training, and educational programs to reduce, limit and prevent exposure to PFAS, also known as forever chemicals' because they do not naturally breakdown. The bill would also require guidance to be issued on alternative foams and personal protective equipment that do not contain PFAS. Firefighters risk their lives every day to protect our local communities in Michigan and across the country, said Senator Peters. We must make every effort to protect their health and safety, including preventing potential exposure to harmful PFAS chemicals. I am proud that the Senate has passed my bipartisan legislation that will help ensure first responders and the communities they serve are safe from these dangerous chemicals, and I will fight to ensure its swift passage into law. "Fire fighters have committed their lives to serving others while keeping communities safe. Regrettably, these brave men and women experience repeated exposures to toxic forever chemicals' in their day-to-day work, subjecting them to higher risks of cancer and other serious health effects, stated Harold A. Today, Congressman Andy Levin, who served in Governor Jennifer Granholm's Cabinet overseeing the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth, released the following statement upon President-elect Joe Biden's nomination of Granholm to lead the United States Department of Energy. As someone who saw Jennifer Granholm's energy leadership firsthand, I can say that Joe Biden will have an Energy Department that leads the world on climate change policy at this crucial time for bold action. He has chosen a person with an excellent track record of running a state in very difficult times, who will be an effective and inspirational administrator and a hands-on policy leader, a brilliant mind racing ahead toward the green future our nation and planet need. I'll never forget the day she asked me to come and work for her. I started in January 2007 in the middle of the auto implosion. She knew that vehicle electrification and retraining workers were key to Michigan's recovery and future and had the foresight and wisdom to combine energy, labor, and economic growth in a single department, knowing that we could tackle climate change and unemployment while creating new opportunity for workers and businesses alike. The only way for Detroit to remain the Motor City is if we dominate the development and production of electric and autonomous vehicles. Jennifer Granholm understands the auto industry and can help America compete effectively with China and Europe to make sure we lead the profound technological transformation the industry must go through. I am proud to have partnered with her on another big part of her legacy in leading Michigan, the No Worker Left Behind Program, in which we put 162,000 unemployed and underemployed workers back to school to study for certificates and degrees leading to in-demand jobs, with substantial investments in green jobs. Renewable energy was such a priority for her that it was memorialized in her official portrait in the Michigan State Capitol, where her hand rests … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) released a statement following the request of Attending Physician Dr. Brian P. Monahan that all Members of Congress take the COVID-19 vaccine without delay: Earlier this week, I hosted a tele-town hall with thousands of constituents from across Michigan's Ninth District featuring Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Caller after caller asked a variation of the question, Should I take the vaccine, and how will I know when it is my turn?' Dr. B's answer was unequivocal: your doctor will communicate when it is your group's turn based on your job, age and other factors and you should take it without delay. The Attending Physician has advised that Members of Congress, and next essential staff, should receive the safe and effective Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for continuity of government operations. As such, I am following my doctor's orders and will be receiving the vaccine tomorrow morning. I encourage every one of my constituents to heed this advice and to take the vaccine as soon as it is made available to you. I will continue to push for the rapid production and successful deployment of the vaccine in Michigan and across the country so everyone can participate in this life-saving, patriotic project as quickly and safely as possible. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, the Bipartisan Women's Caucus leadership led by Representatives Brenda L. Lawrence (D-MI), Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), and Jenniffer Gonzlez Coln (R-PR) introduced H.R. 9016, the Delivering Optimally Urgent Labor Access for Veterans Affairs, or the DOULA Act. This legislation would establish a pilot program to furnish veterans with doula support services and to measure the impact these services have on pregnant veterans' childbirth, mental health, and infant care outcomes. Pregnant veterans disproportionately experience mental health afflictions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Perinatal Education found that expectant mothers matched with a doula had better birth outcomes than did mothers who gave birth without involvement of a doula. While women veterans have increasingly been relying on the Veterans Health Administration for maternal health services, doula services are not currently an integrated part of this model. High maternal mortality rates in the United States necessitate strident action on the part of Congress to uphold commitments to the women we serve, including pregnant veterans, said the Bipartisan Women's Caucus leadership. Pregnant veterans must be afforded optimal maternal and mental health care that considers their veteran-specific experiences. The support of doulas has demonstrable positive effects on health outcomes, lowering the likelihood of pregnancy complications which could harm the mother or the child, and will assist women veterans as they navigate pregnancy and childbirth. Under the DOULA Act, the Department of Veterans Affairs would be required to administer the pilot program of doula support services, developed through consultation with stakeholders, including veterans' organizations, community-based health care professionals such as doulas, and experts in promoting equity in health care. The program will provide meaningful support to pregnant veterans before, during, and after their p… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

They will lead the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee in the new Congress and plan to hold hearings and work on bipartisan comprehensive cybersecurity legislation in the New Year. The recently discovered and ongoing cyber-attacks cannot be tolerated and demonstrate the weakness of our cyber defenses and capacity to respond. These attacks were highly complex and they must be unraveled to know the full extent of the exposure to federal and state agencies and the private sector. The immediate effort must be to stop the immediate threat and ensure our systems are secure. We will in the future need to understand the full scope and impact to ensure that we know what damage has been done and to better prepare to respond next time. These types of sophisticated attacks are going to continue and we must work across the federal government, as well as with our private sector and state and local partners, to learn from this and strengthen our cyber defenses moving forward. In June 2019, the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations released a bipartisan report that extensively documented the cybersecurity vulnerabilities and weaknesses in many of our federal agencies, including the Departments of State and Homeland Security. Next Congress, through the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, we intend to work together to understand the origin, scope, and severity of this breach, and plan to work on bipartisan comprehensive legislation to improve our cy… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The Drone Advisory Committee for the 21st Century Act, which Peters introduced with Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Pat Roberts (R-KS), who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Forestry, and Nutrition Committee, would ensure that the FAA provides representation for local government officials, including those from county and tribal governments, on the Drone Advisory Committee (DAC). With more Michigan farmers and small business owners depending on drone technology to bolster their daily operations, it's critical that rural representatives have a seat at the policy making table especially when it impacts their bottom line and as they deal with unprecedented challenges related to the Coronavirus, said Senator Peters, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. I am pleased that this commonsense bipartisan legislation is now headed to the President's desk, and I look forward to working to making sure that we incorporate agriculture, forestry and rural perspectives across the state into drone policy decision making. As technology becomes more sophisticated, farmers will increasingly rely on drones to assess, monitor, and manage their farm activities, said Senator Thune.Rural areas like South Dakota where agriculture is the state's top industry deserve to have a seat at the table when it comes to making decisions on drone policies and best practices. U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, applauded House passage of his bipartisan bill to address rising water levels and shoreline erosion. The bill, which passed the Senate earlier this week, would provide support for local communities facing rising water levels, coastal erosion, and flooding that have put homes, property, andcommunities at risk, and caused millions of dollars in damages. TheSafeguarding Tomorrow through Ongoing Risk Mitigation (STORM) Actnow heads to the President's desk to be signed into law. Communities in Michigan are facing serious shoreline erosion challenges that have destroyed homes and beaches and have even forced residents to relocate. TheSTORM Actwould establish loans that local governments could access to help mitigate the impact of rising water levels, coastal erosion and other damage caused by natural disasters in a more cost-effective way. Studies have shown that resilience and mitigation spending saves taxpayers more than $6 for every dollar invested. Providing cost-effective tools directly to local communities across Michigan is critical to helping them stave off the harmful effects that coastal erosion, flooding and rising water levels have on people's lives and livelihoods, said Senator Peters.I urge the President to sign this commonsense, bipartisan legislation as soon as possible so that we can ensure that Michigan's coastlines remain safe and pristine for generations to come. Today, on the eve of a hopeful vote on the next COVID relief bill that our Problem Solvers Caucus has so ably led the charge on, I rise to tell the stories of three individuals in my district. Their stories represent just a fraction of the messages I've been receiving on COVID relief, but today, on the floor of the People's House, I rise because they deserve to be heard. Their stories are the reason we refuse to go home for Christmas without an agreement. They are why we continue to fight until a deal is reached. First, I would like to talk about Bob, who wrote to me from Brighton. Bob is a pillar of his community. After serving his nation in the Army National Guard for six years, he's been giving back to his fellow veterans for over 21 years as a District Post Commander at the American Legion. But for the first time in 16 years, Bob recently found himself laid off from his job in construction due to the coronavirus. To cover his expenses, he like 171,000 others in Michigan had to file a first-time claim for unemployment insurance. But despite being eligible for the state's maximum benefit, he still can't make ends meet. Between medications and health insurance, mortgage and car payments, utilities and food, he's having to turn to savings that he knows won't last long. Bob is responsible, a straight shooter, he has served our country, he's the kind of Michigander that anyone would want in their corner. But right now, he's asking for help. Not sometime in the future. Not after the inauguration of a new President. He's asking us to pass a bill that helps the millions of Americans who are in need. It is our job and it is our duty to rise to that call. I'm also pushing for relief because of Richard, who is from my hometown of Holly, Michigan. Richard chairs our Downtown Development Authority board, which supports the business… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Stevens S001215 stevens.house.gov stevens https://stevens.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement in response to recent reports of a major cyberattack targeting several U.S. government agencies. “Last year, a bipartisan Senate investigation revealed the cybersecurity flaws and weaknesses plaguing federal agencies,” said Congresswoman Stevens. “The report revealed that agencies have been relying on outdated systems, failing to safeguard vulnerable hardware, and ignoring credible threats. Now we have learned of a malicious, widespread breach involving several federal agencies which is tragically as unsurprising as it is terrifying. Nearly one in three cybersecurity jobs go unfilled because we have not invested in training our workforce. Our failure to prioritize cybersecurity across all levels of government is a glaring threat to our national security and our economy. I will continue working with my colleagues on the House Science Committee to identify opportunities to strengthen cybersecurity within federal agencies to protect personal data and public safety.” In June 2019, Congresswoman Stevens led a roundtable discussion with cybersecurity experts from the public and private sector to identify challenges and opportunities for strengthening cybersecurity audits to protect personal data and public safety in the Federal government. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-06-28T00:42:23Z

Kildee, Bergman Bill Protecting Injured Servicemembers Passes Congress, Headed for Presidents Signature 2020-12-16 2020 2020-12 Democrat Senate MI Dan Kildee K000380 dankildee.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTONCongressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, and Congressman Jack Bergman (MI-01)today applauded the passage of their legislation, theTransparency for Wounded Warriors Act,which was included in H.R. 7105 theJohnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020. Their legislation will ensure that injured servicemembers receive their benefits earned through service to our country. The TraumaticServicemembers' Group Life Insurance (TSGLI)provides financial support to help eligible servicemembers recover from severe injuries. At times, servicemembers have been denied from receiving these benefits due to a lack of transparency and bureaucratic hurdles in the process.TheTransparency for Wounded Warriors Actwould make theTSGLIbenefits process more transparent and minimize the potential for bureaucratic errors. This legislation is a result of a local veteran in Congressman Kildee's district. In 2013, Sergeant First Class (SFC) Cameron Corder, of Clio, was injured while on active duty with the Michigan Army National Guard serving as a flight medic in Afghanistan. SFC Corder sustained severe injuries to his back during a medical evacuation flight. Despite his traumatic injury, the Army for years repeatedly denied SFC Corder's requests for the injury benefits to which he is entitled, including $100,000 from theTSGLIprogram. For years, Kildee fought to get SFC Corder his benefits, including bringing him to a presidential State of the Union Address to draw attention to his case. In November 2017, SFC Corder received his $100,000 in back-owed benefits. I am pleased that Congress passed this bipartisan legislation to cut the red tape and get our servicemembers the benefits they have earned through service to our country, said Congressman Kildee. An injured servicemember should never have to go through a difficult and lengthy bureaucratic ordeal to get the benefits they deserve. We are already seeing first-hand the effects climate change is having on our Great Lakes, including record lake levels and threats of invasive species like Asian carp. Many Flint residents have expressed their concerns to me about this appointment and I have relayed their concerns to senior members of the Biden-Harris Transition. While the position of White House Climate Coordinator does not require confirmation by Congress, we must never forget the failures of the Flint water crisis. All levels of government, including the state of Michigan and the Environmental Protection Agency, failed Flint families. The EPA should not have taken the state of Michigan at its word about the quality of Flint's water. That's why I led the fight to pass new laws that require public notifications within 24 hours of high lead levels in drinking water. I also led the fight to secure $170 million to replace lead pipes and expand health care for residents after this man-made crisis. What happened to Flint is not an anomaly, it is a warning to the rest of the country that we must get serious about better protecting public health and addressing the injustices that we see in society. I have already had several conversations with the incoming Biden administration about how we can help Flint recover, and I will continue to aggressively push policy solutions that help families in my hometown. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA) today introduced legislation to ensure workers are guaranteed access to training and potential benefits when an employer adopts new technology that impacts their employment. With a quarter of jobs in the United States at risk of automation, the Workers' Right to Training Act will enshrine essential rights and resources for workers at companies seeking to use new technology to replace an existing workforce. American economic power has always been built on the strength of our workers to adapt to new technology, said Congresswoman Dingell. But sustained attacks on our labor unions have eroded access to critical training programs and workplace protections that have kept us at the forefront of innovation. With the Workers' Right to Training Act, we can restore power in the hands of a high-skilled workforce that best understands how to reinvent their industries and their companies. The introduction of automation in the workplace may happen quickly and its effects will be felt deeply by working people across the country. As we prepare for this inevitable transition, we must harness the power and knowledge of our most valuable asset: our skilled workforce. With care and planning, we can shape the future of work for the better, said Congressman Mark DeSaulnier. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced a companion version of the legislation in the United States Senate. Specifically, the Workers' Right to Training Act would require that companies offer workers on-the-job training and compensation to employees affected by the implementation of new technology, mandate advanced notification of new technology's impact on employment, and ensure workers have a voice in an employer's decision to introduce new technology in the workplace. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The One Small Step to Protect Human Heritage in Space Act, which Peters introduced with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), would enact first-of-its-kind legal protections for the Apollo sites by making NASA's preservation recommendations a requirement for future activities on the Moon. As a child, I watched the achievements of the Apollo missions with excitement about what is possible when we come together with a common goal, said Senator Peters, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. I was proud to author this bipartisan legislation to preserve for all of humanity the incredible achievements of the Apollo astronauts on the Moonand also to honor the 400,000 people around the world who made it possibleincluding the now famous African American Hidden Figures who were crucial in calculating trajectories that got astronauts to and from the Moon. As we look forward to new expeditions to the moon and placing American boots where they have never gone before on Mars, it is crucial to safeguard the history of American exceptionalism and ingenuity in space, from Apollo 11 to the upcoming Artemis program missions, said Senator Cruz. As the chairman of the Aviation and Space subcommittee and as a Texan, I am honored to help preserve these historic human heritage sites, while continuing to maintain a dominant presence in low-Earth orbit and beyond. As we go forward to the Moon with the Artemis Program, NASA has been clear that we must do so sustainably, said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. As part of the Artemis Accords agreements signed with partner nations, NASA has emphasized that protecting historically significant sites is critical, and I applaud the leaders of this legislation for their commitment to ensuring that… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Surprise medical bills occur when a patient gets medical care, unknowingly or unintentionally, then receives care from a medical provider outside of their insurance network. The patient is then left with the bill when the health care providers and insurance companies cannot agree on the cost of care. When a patient has a medical emergency, the last thing they should have to worry about is an unexpected medical bill especially during a pandemic, Congressman Kildee said. This bipartisan legislation will protect patients from surprise medical bills, lower health care costs, and provide increased transparency for patients, ensuring they won't be stuck in the middle of a billing dispute. The No Surprises Actwould end surprise bills for patients by ensuring: No surprise bills for emergency care:Whether a patient is taken to an out-of-network emergency room or treated at an in-network emergency room, but by a medical provider who is not covered by their insurance, they are now protected. No surprise bills for scheduled care:The bill forbids out-of-network health care providers from making patients foot the bill for the difference between the amount the medical provider charges and the amount that the patient's insurance pays, known as balance billing, for care without notice. Providers must give the patient notice of their out-of-network insurance and an estimate of charges 72 hours before receiving out-of-network services and the patient must agree to receive out-of-network care. The bill also provides protections against surprise bills and a period of transition for patients with complex care needs if their insurance changes. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) today urged immediate action from Facebook to eradicate anti-Muslim bigotry from the platform and demanded Mark Zuckerberg implement six measures to combat bigoted content. In a letter signed by 29 colleagues, Dingell cited instances of anti-Muslim content on Facebook and recent reports showing the role of the platform in inciting violence against the Muslim community. Facebook cannot celebrate the success of its platform, while ignoring its role in elevating the dangerous, deadly content targeting Muslim people, said Congresswoman Dingell. In Christchurch, New Zealand, a terrorist attack that stole the lives of fifty-one Muslims worshipping in their mosque was streamed live on Facebook around the world. But in the ensuing weeks and months, Facebook failed to offer a single policy intentionally designed to eradicate hateful, anti-Muslim content. Nearly two years later, it's time for Facebook to demonstrate that this company recognizes the life and death consequences of their lack of action. In her letter to Mark Zuckerberg, Dingell asked for Facebook to implement the following measures: Form a working group comprised of senior staff focused on anti-Muslim bigotry issues and responsible for coordinating work within the company to address hate groups, tropes, bigoted content, and anti-discrimination training. Enforce your hate content and hate group policies in a way that ensures militias and white supremacists cannot use your event and group pages to terrorize targeted communities. She understands how energy and environmental policies can be used to support working families, and she knows how to craft solutions to the most pressing issues we face today. This appointment is good news for Michigan and it's good news for our country. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The decision could slow efforts to launch a nationwide vaccination campaign as the U.S. will reportedly be unable to purchase additional doses of the vaccine from Pfizer until pre-orders from other countries are filled. Pfizer's largest American manufacturing site is located in Portage, Michigan, where the first batches of Coronavirus vaccines were shipped out across the country on Sunday morning. In their letter, the Senators express concern about the Trump Administration's lack of planning and transparency, and press for more information about the Administration's preparations to purchase additional vaccines. We write to you about reports the United States Government declined to exercise its option to purchase additional doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine earlier this year. We are concerned the failure to secure an adequate supply of vaccines will needlessly prolong the COVID-19 pandemic in this country, causing further loss of life and economic devastation. We fear this is yet another instance in which the Trump Administration's failure to develop a comprehensive national vaccines plan in a timely manner could jeopardize efforts to get people vaccinated and ultimately end this pandemic, wrote the Senators. The Congressional App Challenge is a well-known competition in computer science held by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Internet Education Foundation (IEF). Michigan's Ninth District 2020 winner is Vijay Daita, a sophomore at Bloomfield Hills High School, who created an app in Javascript called Click for a Cause. Click for a Cause helps people connect to businesses that match their values through an easily accessible interface that allows users to search for businesses and apps associated with causes like social justice, public health and environmental justice. As a prize, Congress will showcase Daita's app in the United States Capitol. A panel of two judges, Adam Romanko and Elijah Sattler, chose the winner for this year's App Challenge. Adam Romanko, MBA is a Cybersecurity Analyst specializing in application security at General Motors and lives in the Ninth District. Elijah Sattler is a Software Engineer at Capital One and earned his bachelor's degree in computer engineering at the University of Michigan. Elijah also has a passion for developing Slack bots and has presented at Slack's annual Spec Conference. He is a native Michigander from Flint. Young Americans who have grown up with code as a second language will be essential to rebuilding our country and ensuring technology betters the lives of working people, said Rep. Levin. The Congressional App Challenge is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the homegrown STEM talent in Macomb and Oakland Counties. I couldn't be prouder of everyone who applied to the App Challenge this year. Every one of you has the opportunity to help your community with your innovation and creativity, and I hope you will continue to build, tinker and code. Congratulations to Vijay on being selected as this year's winner! I'm inspired by the work you're doing to connect people to businesses… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), Vice Chair of the House Education & Labor Committee and member of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, along with Congressman Brendan Boyle (PA-02), member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Congresswoman Cindy Axne (IA-03), member of the House Financial Services Committee, today introduced two pieces of legislation to protect and increase sustainable investments. The Sustainable Investment PoliciesAct and the Retirees Sustainable Investment Policies Act together would give workers a bigger say in where they invest their retirement savings by requiring plan investors and fiduciaries to take into account and explain to beneficiaries how they consider environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) factors when making investment decisions. Sustainable investing and profitable investing are not mutually exclusive. According to Morningstar, a leading research source on investment performance, on average, investments based on environmental, social and governance goals outperformed conventional offerings during 2019 and the first quarter of 2020. Yet on June 30, the Department of Labor proposed regulations seemingly designed to discourage and block sustainable retirement investing. The Department received more than 8,000 comments on that proposal, 95 percent of which opposed the proposed regulations. Those comments came not just from green investors and advocates, but also giants of the investment industry like Vanguard, Fidelity and BlackRock. On October 30th, the Department finalized a version of this rule. This is workers' money. The investment process should be transparent to them and in line with workers' values, said Rep. Levin. Fortunately, we are seeing that there is a convergence of sustainability values and diversity priorities in governance with durable performance over time. Companies perform better if they are aimed at where the economy is going, which is towards sustainability and inclusion across all aspects of how … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, released the following statement on the bipartisan COVID relief package negotiated by the Problem Solvers Caucus and a group of Senators of both parties: Today was a good day. The first COVID-19 vaccine was administered in the United States, and the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and a bipartisan group of Senators today finalized a COVID-19 relief package that represents our best hope to get help to Americans before the end of the year. We held a bipartisan press conference to announce it, doing what the American people have been asking of us for nine months: to put partisanship aside and find a way to help the country. The Problem Solvers Caucus made up of 25 Democrats and 25 Republicans stood today to push for a single bill that includes aid for our state and local governments, rather than two, separate bills. All negotiation requires give and take, and in order to preserve the state and local aid, it meant compromising on the issue of limiting liability for our businesses. There are aspects of this language I don't love, but my concerns are far outweighed by the critical financial condition of our state and local governments. I refuse to go back to my district for the holidays and tell our mayors, teachers, police, fire and first responders that we couldn't come up with a deal to prevent them from getting pink slips in 2021. And if we don't get state and local funding now, I do not believe we can count on a future deal to get these funds. To my House and Senate colleagues who may be critical of this compromise: I urge you to read the bill, acknowledge that it was designed as a bridge to the spring, and look beyond politics, to the suffering of the American people. Now is not the time for messaging bills that have no chance of passing. Platitudes and empty demands from the sidelines won't feed the people standing in food lines, or help the small business owner just trying to mak… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Michigan workers are the best in the world, and with a COVID-19 vaccine being manufactured here, Michigan workers will play an important role in saving lives. I hope every Michigander will join me in continuing to wear a mask, practicing social distancing and frequently washing their hands to slow the spread. Davis (IL-07), Chairman of the Ways and Means' Worker and Family Support Subcommittee, today sent aletterto President Donald J. Trump urging his administration to extend federal unemployment insurance benefits, which are set to expire at the end of December without action by the White House and U.S. Senate. The letter was signed by 75 additional Members of Congress. Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, a $600 per week supplemental federal unemployment benefit that proved to be a lifeline to millions of Americans throughout the pandemic, expired at the end of July.Without expeditious action, additional direct benefits to workers and supports for employerswill expire at the end of the year, including: Up to 13 weeks of additional benefits for those who have exhausted state unemployment; Up to 39 weeks of benefits for workers who are not eligible for state unemployment insurance, including self-employed and gig workers; and Interest-free loans to states to keep their unemployment trust fund solvent and delay unemployment tax increases to employers. The U.S. House of Representatives passed two relief billsThe Heroes ActinMay and anupdated version ofTheHeroes Actin Octoberto extend critical unemployment provisions. Kettles. Lieutenant Colonel Kettles, a lifelong resident of Ypsilanti who passed away in January of 2019, served in the Vietnam War as an Army helicopter commander and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2016 for leading a rescue operation that saved 44 soldiers. The lawmakers' legislation passed the House of Representatives in October. Now, it heads to the President's desk for his signature. The story of LTC Charles Kettles' selfless bravery must be told and cherished for generations. By engraving his name above the VAMC in Ann Arbor, not only will people learn of his courage, but the doctors, nurses, and staff within those walls will carry on his mission of caring for his fellow servicemembers and veterans, said Congresswoman Dingell. Over the years, LTC Kettles was more than a hero to me, he became a close friend who I miss dearly. With this lasting honor, we will listen to the wishes of a community that wanted to celebrate the legacy of one of their neighbors. LTC Kettles' bravery and commitment to his fellow servicemembers embodied the values that make our military and nation so strong, said Senator Peters, a former Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. I was honored to help pass this legislation to recognize LTC Kettles for his contributions to Michigan and our nation. Michigan will be forever proud to call him a native son and his selflessness and exemplary service will continue to inspire generations to come. Decades ago, Lieutenant ColonelKettlescourageously went back into enemy territory to save the lives of 44 of his fellow servicemen. It is a fitting tribute to rename the Ann Arbor VA hospital for a hometown hero. The President should sign this bill right away. Former First Lady Rosalynn Smith Carter used her powerful voice and passion for mental health care to force a long overdue reckoning in our nation, said Congresswoman Dingell. When many saw mental illness and substance use disorders as weakness, Mrs. Carter chose compassion and empathy to see the inherent strength in patients who deserved accessible treatment and affordable care. For five decades, has made the cause of behavioral health care her own and we are all better for her work and her legacy. Former First Lady Rosalynn Smith Carter has fought to end the stigma against mental health illnesses and to increase access to mental health care, said Congressman Carter. Mrs. Carter has made Georgians proud, and I'm very glad to see this resolution pass the House today to recognize her as a champion in this fight. https://debbiedingell.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2795 Dingell Introduces Legislation to Improve Investments in Home Care Worker Training 2020-12-10 2020 2020-12 Democrat House MI Debbie Dingell D000624 debbiedingell.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) today introduced the Home Care Worker Training Improvement Act to improve the quality of home care by providing additional support and advancement opportunities for home healthcare providers. A week after introducing the COVID HCBS Relief Act, Dingell's bill continues her leadership on long-term care by proposing legislation incentivizing investment in critical training programs for home care workers. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) introduced a companion version of the legislation in the United States Senate. Home care workers strengthen communities, care for patients, and save lives, but are still too often denied living wages and basic workplace protections, said Congresswoman Dingell. In the midst of a pandemic that has upended our health care system and our economy, we need to invest in recruiting and training a new generation of home healthcare providers to meet this rapidly growing need in our country. This legislation won't just improve our nation's long-term care system, it will support the working families caring for our most vulnerable patients. "Despite the essential work home care workers do, for too long they have not been treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, said April Verrett, SEIU Local 2015 President and Chair of the SEIU National Home Care Council. While home care is one of the most in-demand and fastest-growing jobs in this country, home care workers endure low wages, insufficient benefits, and little to no training. The devaluing of this essential work is directly connected to the reality that this workforce is dominated by women of color. We must transform home care jobs into good, union, family-sustaining careers. Transformation requires a major investment and strategy to create a Medicaid Home and Community Based Service infrastructure that both delivers quality care to everyone that needs it and adequately protects, respects, and pays workers. None of this is possible without increased funding for training. We thank Repr… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
https://debbiedingell.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2796 Dingell, Moolenaar Introduce National Dam and Hydropower Safety Legislation 2020-12-10 2020 2020-12 Democrat House MI Debbie Dingell D000624 debbiedingell.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, DC Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Congressman John Moolenaar (R-MI) today introduced bipartisan legislation that makes reforms and improvements to dam and hydropower safety operations and oversight. Dingell and Moolenaar pushed for the provisions after the breach of the Edenville Dam and Sanford Dam failures in Michigan caused extensive damage throughout the region's downstream communities, destroying homes, businesses, roads, and bridges. The lawmakers' legislation, the National Dam and Hydropower Safety Improvements Act of 2020, would enhance dam and hydropower safety operation requirements nationwide and aims to modernize existing infrastructure through the development of new best practices and improved communications between FERC and states. This legislation was written in response to the aftermath of the Edenville dam and Stanford dam failures in Michigan this year and would also require a FERC to provide a briefing and report to Congress on the tragic incident. In the midst of a global health pandemic and economic devastation, Michigan experienced a catastrophic, avoidable infrastructure collapse. The breach of the Edenville and Sanford dams caused extensive damage in Michigan and its downstream communities. It drowned homes, businesses, and whole cities, said Dingell. It is clear there are serious gaps in existing laws that need to be addressed and this could have been prevented. We can never let this happen again in any city in America with a high hazard dam. I look forward to continuing to advance this legislation next Congress and hope to enlist strong bipartisan support from my colleagues. I've been working hard to help our community recover, including securing approval for more than $100 million in federal assistance that has come to our community to rebuild homes, small businesses, and private wells, as well as roads and bridges, said Moolenaar. However, there's no doubt that the federal and state regulators failed our community when they were working with an uncooperative pr… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
