Torres (CA-35) and Deb Haaland (NM-01), Co-Chair of the Native American Caucus, celebrated this week as their bill, the Indian Community Economic Enhancement Act, was signed into law. The new law expands economic opportunities for Native Americans by addressing the lack of access to credit and community development that hampers entrepreneurialism in Native American tribes. Specifically, the legislation: Updates and provides new resources to the Department of Commerce's Office of Native American Business Development; Ensures effective implementation of the Buy Indian Act within the Departments of Interior and Health and Human Services; Reauthorizes the Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS) grant program administered by the Administration for Native Americans; and Authorizes the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) to provide financial assistance to Native American community development financial institutions. The lawmakers released the following statements: Native communities are one step closer to economic independence and self-charted prosperity today now that the Indian Community Economic Enhancement Act is law of the land, Rep. Torres said. For tribal members whose financial opportunities have historically been limited by the geographic and economic isolation, this new law will allow capital to flow and new businesses to take root. I am grateful for Rep. Haaland's leadership as we ushered this bill through the legislative process, and thank our partners in the Senate for working with us to make this day a reality. All communities deserve access to the tools to grow businesses and build economic opportunities, but years of oppression have left Native American entrepreneurs behind, Rep. Deb Haaland, Co-Chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus, said. As a small business owner while raising my daughter there were times when easier access to capital would have benefited my business. I'm proud of the work Rep. Torres and I did to expand opp… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Last week, Congress passed a bill that includedemergency coronavirus reliefand anomnibus packageto save the lives and livelihoods of the American people. After President Trump previously negotiated lower stimulus payments, he then announced he would support $2000 stimulus paymentslast week. The House presented a standalone bill that would increase stimulus payments from $600 to $2,000. I will always vote to bring more relief to New Mexico families during this challenging time. I know what it's like to struggle to make ends meet and the torture folks feel when deciding which bills to pay and how they're going to put food on the table. We've been fighting for this for months, and finally, the President came around after he blocked negotiations since summer. These direct checks are in urgent need for working families, and I urge the Senate to do the right thing and pass the bill so it lands on the President's desk as soon as possible, said Congresswoman Deb Haaland. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Military Bases, Labs, And Men And Women In Uniform Thursday, December 24, 2020 WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement after President Donald J. Trump vetoed theNational Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021: This is another dangerous move by President Trump to put his own interests ahead of the country's. The National Defense Authorization Act has broad bipartisan support and is foundational to our national security. It includes provisions I fought for to authorize critical funding for New Mexico's men and women in uniform, military installations, national laboratories, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, and job-creating initiatives throughout the state. The bill also includes critical new cyber authorities we need now to protect our networks against the type of devastating attacks we have seen in the past weeks. President Trump needs to stop trying to burn the place down on his way out the door if he ever wants to be remembered as anything other than a tyrant. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

We are enthusiastic about your transformative agenda for women and families and have appreciated our discussions with you about the importance of your policy proposals, the Members wrote. Because of the substantial damage done by Donald Trump to the women of our country, we encourage you to use executive power to immediately begin reversing the harm wrought by the outgoing administration and chart the new course articulated by your platform that affirms gender equity and allows all women and girls to reach their full potential. DWC Members outlined numerous areas in which President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris have the authority to pursue executive action. Those recommendations include but are not limited to actions on the following: Establishing a White House Council on Gender Equity, appointing a Special Assistant to the President on Gender Equity. Protecting and expanding access to reproductive health care by rescinding harmful Trump-era restrictions, addressing urgent maternal health needs; Taking a critical look at child care and care-giving needs; Improving pay equity for women; Protecting victims of sexual assault on college campuses by rescinding harmful Trump administration changes to Title IX; Reunifying families separated at the border; and Supporting women globally by appointing a highly visible Ambassador-at-large for Global Women's Issues, fully reinstating global women's health funding, and rescinding the Global Gag Rule. This has been a historic year for women: the celebration of 100 years of suffrage, our first woman Vice President, and the heroic role women have played as a majority of essential workers and health care providers during the pandemic. But our accomplishments are still coupled with crisis. Women across American are being pushed out of the workforce and pushed into economic turmoil because of persistent policies based on inequality, said Congresswoman Katherine Clark. This playlist is a celebration of women and our refusal to give up in our fight for equal rights and equal representation. I hope that when you listen you feel inspired, empowered, and ready to take on the world. In a year that has been challenging for everyone, particularly working women and moms, it can be easy to overlook the tremendous achievements of strong, successful women across our nation. While I continue to advocate each day for policies that uplift women, I recognize that I wouldn't be able to do what I do if it weren't for the women who came before me, the women I serve with, and the women who sacrifice each day on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19 to make sure that we are safe and healthy, said Congresswoman Lori Trahan. This playlist brought me some joy during this difficult time, and I hope it does the same for all of the strong women out there who need a reminder of just how fearless and inspiring they are. Music has played an uplifting role in the battle for women's rights since the suffrage movement helping women to unify, rally, and assert their unbreakable spirit with songs of protest and praise to uplift and inspire us to keep going. Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, slammed President Trump after he vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which provides important funding for military servicemembers and national security. https://www.heinrich.senate.gov/press-releases/heinrich-announces-support-for-economic-justice-act-proposal-to-address-systemic-racism-and-historic-underinvestment-in-communities-of-color Heinrich Announces Support For Economic Justice Act, Proposal To Address Systemic Racism And Historic Underinvestment In Communities Of Color 2020-12-22 2020 2020-12 Democrat House NM Martin Heinrich H001046 www.heinrich.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is cosponsoring the Economic Justice Act, a major legislative proposal that provides more than $435 billion in immediate and long-term investments in communities of color to address systemic racism and reverse decades of historic underinvestment. Through eleven key initiatives, the Economic Justice Act aims to immediately help communities of color respond to the pandemic by investing over $135 billion in underfunded critical priorities, including child care, mental health and primary care, growth of minority-owned businesses, and job creation. This legislation also seeks to build long lasting wealth and health in these communities over the next five years by investing over $300 billion for infrastructure, a homeowner down payment tax credit, Medicaid expansion, and more. We have a real opportunity before us to rebuild our economy in a way that includes all Americans. The best way to address systemic racial injustice is to make forward-looking and long-term investments in communities that have too often been left behind, said Heinrich.Among other important measures, the Economic Justice Act would represent a huge step forward in ensuring that Tribal communities have the same ability as the rest of the country to access broadband internet for education, business, and health care services. We must build back our economy from this crisis in a way that brings everyone along and create a more fair and just society than the one we had before. Additionally, the bill makes key policy changes to better target federal assistance to high-poverty communities and to implement local hiring provisions to ensure more federal infrastructure spending translates into job opportunities for disadvantaged workers and underrepresented populations. The Economic Justice Act is not the conclusion of efforts in this space, but an initial down payment for communities of color and the first in many focused investments and policy initiatives to begin dismantling systematic racism. The Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act will support grid-scale energy storage research and development and improve the efficiency of the nation's electric grid, while helping to align research efforts on energy storage technologies. As a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, advocating for the research and development of long-term energy storage has been a top priority, said Heinrich. I am proud to see the Better Energy Storage Technology Act signed into law so that we can truly invest in reshaping the power industry. This bipartisan effort offers federal agencies and national labs the opportunity to modernize our energy grid with advanced storage technologies that can provide days, even months, of capacity. With advances in solar and wind energy, New Mexico remains a leader in the charge towards a clean energy future. Signing this bill into law adds the extra spark to boost New Mexico power grids with the potential to do the same around the globe. Energy storage provides a range of benefits including increased resilience and reliability on the grid. Supporting current and next-generation energy storage devices will complement the growth of clean, renewable resources on the power grid, replacing other sources of energy that release harmful emissions that cause climate change. In addition to these benefits, energy storage systems can help decrease energy costs by reducing the need for expensive peak power. Tonight, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) voted to bring relief to New Mexico families. The COVID-19 relief package passed by the House comes at a time when New Mexicans are reporting increased financial strain due to the pandemic economy and the country approved the first COVID-19 vaccines. Haaland also voted to pass an appropriations bill to keep the government funded through the next fiscal year. They will now move to the President's desk. The COVID-19 provisions in this package are not all that they should be, but the need for relief is urgent. I know the struggle many families face to afford basic necessities in tough times New Mexico families need the stimulus payments, unemployment, rent and utility assistance right now. This package will send help right away while protecting workers' safety and funding vaccination distribution. Senator Heinrich has been championing the effort to provide funding for elementary and secondary schools to improve indoor air quality using proven technologies and reduce the transmission of COVID-19. In October, Heinrich introduced theKeeping Schools Safe Act, and has been working with educators from districts across New Mexico during the pandemic to create safer indoor environments in schools. The emergency COVID-19 relief package provides $82 billion in funding for colleges and schools, including support for HVAC repair and replacement to mitigate virus transmission and reopen classrooms. Congress is expected to vote on the legislation soon, which includes this provision and several others to provide much-needed relief to New Mexicans. If we follow the science, we can make pragmatic changes and use proven, innovative technologies to create safer learning environments now and into the future, said Heinrich.I'm pleased we were able to secure funding for elementary and secondary schools to improve air quality and ventilation putting them one step closer to safely reopening. One path to aid in safely reopening schools and school districts across the country is to invest in air filtration, ventilation, and air purification technologies. However, the cost of these technologies is high. From the $82 billion secured in the bipartisan agreement, $54.3 billion will go to the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund for schools to be able to improve ventilation systems and help meet the challenges of th… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Biden requesting that the incoming Biden administration make a full repeal of the Trump administration's harmful section 201 tariffs on imported solar photovoltaic cells and panels an early priority. In the letter, the senators describe how the Trump administration's tariffs have imposed huge financial burdens on the domestic solar industry. These tariffs have come at the cost of thousands of solar jobs around the country, stifled billions in private investment, and slowed desperately needed progress in the fight to address the climate crisis. In just three years, President Trump's tariffs have dealt a significant setback to the solar power sector, wrote the senators.Domestic prices of solar panels are now among the highest in the world, ranging from 43 to 57 percent above the global average. According to industry estimates, as many as 62,000 solar jobs have been lost or not created and more than 10.5 gigawatts of solar capacity delayed, representing a loss of sufficient generation to power 1.8 million homes and $19 billion in investment. "I am pleased this bipartisan agreement extends and expands tax incentives for clean energy, which are proven ways to grow both the wind and solar energy industries in New Mexico and bolster nation's efforts to combat climate change. We saw new evidence of this just last week with the completion of the Sagamore Wind Project--the largest wind farm in our state's entire history,"said Heinrich."As we look for the best ways to rebuild our economy in New Mexico and across the nation in the face of the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, we absolutely need to double down on wind and solar. New Mexico is poised to become a major producer and exporter of clean powerand create thousands of new jobs in the process. I will continue to work to diversify our economy so that we can create more opportunity for all New Mexicans." The package includes a two-year extension of the Investment Tax Credit for solar power, a one-year extension of the Production Tax Credit for wind power projects, and a new five-year, 30% tax credit for offshore wind projects. It also phases down superpollutant HFCs, positioning the U.S. to lead the world in staving off nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit of global warming. Senator Heinrich, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has been a leading advocate of tax credits to support the development of wind and solar energy. He originally spearheaded efforts in 2015 to secure a multi-year extension of wind and solar production and investment tax credits that encourage companies and investors to support major projects like the Sagamore Wind Project. The COVID-19 relief package will extend unemployment benefits; deliver direct payments to millions of American families; provide crucial relief to schools, small businesses, and health care systems; and support the production and distribution of a vaccine. The senators also voted to pass a spending package that includes all 12 appropriations bills for fiscal year 2021. New Mexicans and Native communities have weathered the COVID-19 crisis with resilience, but struggling families and communities need more help. This hard-fought compromise is short of what is needed and long overdue, but I am supporting it to deliver urgently-needed financial resources and public health support to New Mexicans and Tribes to help defeat this virus and rebuild our economy, said Udall. This bill will invest in the safe vaccine distribution, provide extra unemployment assistance to out of work New Mexicans, support New Mexico small businesses, provide rental assistance to families trying to keep a roof over their heads, send direct payments to Americans, and give support to families battling food insecurity. And while this bill does include some support for state, local and Tribal governments including a critical extension of the CARES Act deadline to use existing relief funds it is unconscionable that Senate Republicans blocked direct funding for our teachers, hospitals and essential public health and public safety services that our communities depend on. The bicameral, bipartisanSafeguard Tribal Objects of Patrimony (STOP) Act, introduced and championed by Senators Heinrich and Murkowski, has been endorsed by organizations and Tribes across Indian Country. The legislation will help prevent instances like the auction of a shield, stolen from the Pueblo of Acoma. Senator Heinrich played a role in the effort to bring the shield home by working with Governors Kurt Riley and Brian Vallo to call for its return. For years, I've been proud to work with New Mexico's Pueblos, the Jicarilla and Mescalero Apache Nations, the Navajo Nation, and Tribes across Indian Country to halt the trade of culturally significant items and repatriate stolen pieces to their rightful owners. Passing the STOP Act in the Senate is a significant achievement, and I will continue fighting to see that it makes it across the finish line,"said Heinrich. In New Mexico, we all recognize the incredible beauty of American Indian art--from the ancient wonders that we can explore and admire in places like Chaco Canyon and the Gila Cliff Dwellings to the traditional and modern art masterpieces created to this day by Native artists. "We need a whole-of-government approach with engagement between the private and public sectors to provide a full accounting of what happened and deter future cyberattacks. "Given the gravity of this breach, it's concerning that President Trump is paying so little attention to it. I am greatly encouraged that Kirtland has been selected as the preferred location for a major Air Force Special Operations training mission, said Heinrich. It's been an honor to advocate for Kirtland to host this new mission and worked to ensure this year's National Defense Authorization Act would enable the Air Force to carry out its plan to stand up the unit. This training unit would align well with existing missions at both Kirtland and Cannon Air Force Bases, which benefit from New Mexico's unrivaled airspace, our premier testing ranges, and our on-ground expertise. These factors combine to create an ideal base for training new aircraft units. I look forward to working with the Air Force over the next two years to make sure the Air Force has what it needs to prepare for the arrival of this new mission. The AC-130J Formal Training Unit would educate and train pilots and aircraft crew how to operate the AC-130J platform in some of the most challenging environments in the world. The unit is expected to be composed of six primary aircraft and one additional maintenance aircraft. The mission would support up to 338 full-time Air Force personnel, with additional contract and maintenance support. The mission is expected to begin transferring to Kirtland from its current location in Florida in 2022. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The completion of the Sagamore Wind Project is proof that eastern New Mexico is rapidly becoming one of the best places in the world to produce wind energy, said Heinrich. As we look for the best ways to rebuild our economy in New Mexico and across the nation in the face of the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, we absolutely need to double down on wind energy. Wind projects like Sagamore bring millions of dollars of private investment to our state and create hundreds of new jobs in our rural communities. Unfortunately, the constant stream of misogynistic attacks leveled against accomplished women has no bounds. As leaders of the DWC we give no credence to the idea that Dr. Jill Biden shouldn't be allowed to use a title she earned through merit and tireless work because it does not fit the author's unfounded conception of the work that merits recognition, said the Democratic Women's Caucus leadership. Dr. Biden, like the countless accomplished Ph.Ds. in our country, deserves and should proudly display her hard-earned degree. Belittling the intellect, passion, and dedication of our nation's educators is not only reprehensible on its face, but also reveals a dangerous lack of respect for the power a quality education and compassionate teachers have to change lives. The suggestion that Dr. Biden should settle for the larger thrill of living for the next four years in the best public housing in the world as First Lady Jill Biden,' misses the reality that the future First Lady Dr. Jill Biden alongside Vice President-elect Harris and the other talented women in the incoming Administration will continue to demonstrate that there are no limits to what women can achieve, especially after being given the opportunity of an education. The call comes as the Food and Drug Administration moves toward approving vaccines and companies and health care officials prepare for the widespread distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. At the same time, essential workers, Black, Latino, Native American, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, older adults, immigrants, people with limited English proficiency, and people with disabilities continue to experience COVID-19 infections and deaths at higher rates. VIDEO:Haaland Calls for Equity in COVID-19 Vaccination Distribution. During the call Congresswoman Haaland, Co Chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus said, Over the course of this pandemic, history repeats itself and a spotlight has been put on the disparities that have existed for far too long. The virus has ravaged our communities and the Trump administration has once again failed to provide the resources needed to protect the health of Indian Country. And now, vaccines are here. But again, a comprehensive plan that will serve all people is missing. We have the opportunity to correct a history of deceit by the federal government against Native American people: Tribes need robust education on the vaccine to increase confidence, resources to make up for gaps that have existed for generations, and flexibility to develop their own distribution plans. Congresswoman Haaland (NM-01) joined 159 colleagues in the Senate and House to urge Congressional leadership to support the RESTAURANTS Act, and include it in any future COVID-19 relief package or year-end spending bill. The RESTAURANTS Act is a bipartisan bill that will establish a $120 billion revitalization fund for small and independent restaurants. Haaland is a co-sponsor of the restaurant relief bill, which passed the House in October and has yet to pass the Senate. This unprecedented increase [in COVID-19 cases] has prompted a wave of new restrictions ranging from nighttime closures and restrictions on indoor dining in New York, North Dakota, and Maryland to takeout-only in Oregon and stay-at-home orders in New Mexico. For the second time this year, restaurants and bars are having to limit operations or close their doors completely, raising concerns about their ability to survive the long winter ahead. They need quick relief to keep their workers employed and hold onto their businesses. Congress needs to act speedily and pass the RESTAURANTS Act to help save local restaurants across the country and the millions of workers they employ, wrote the25 Senatorsand138 Representativesin their letter. Delegation Pushes Trump Administration To Act On Navajo Nation Request For Major Disaster Declaration Amid Devastating Impacts Of COVID-19 Pandemic Thursday, December 10, 2020 WASHINGTON U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, and U.S. Representatives Ben Ray Lujn, Deb Haaland, and Xochitl Torres Small are urging the Trump administration to take immediate action on Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez's recent request for a major disaster declaration. Tribal communities have been especially hard-hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a major disaster declaration is necessary for the Navajo Nation to address the ongoing public health and economic effects. Since March, the Navajo Nation has invested over $4 million in Tribal funds to mitigate the COVID-19 public health emergency. According to recent data released by the Navajo Department of Health, the Navajo Nation has suffered 693 COVID-19-related deaths and 18,575 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Long-standing health disparities in the Navajo Nation, such as disproportionate rates of pre-existing health conditions and chronically underfunded federal and Tribal health care facilities have exacerbated the effects of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation, the New Mexico delegation wrote. According to surge projections from the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, steep spikes in COVID-19 cases will soon severely overwhelm Navajo Nation health care facilities resulting in dire shortages of Personal Protective Equipment, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, and ventilators. Already, the Navajo Nation's ICU beds are at 100% capacity. The delegation continued, Due to the life and death nature of this crisis, we urge you to act without delay and approve the Navajo Nation's request for a major disaster declaration. Heinrich, along with a bipartisan group of senators, sent the letter to Senate and House Leadership as the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten rural counties' ability to properly fund basic services. Both of these vital programs ensure many of New Mexico's rural counties are able to pay for police and fire protection, emergency response, schools, road maintenance, and other crucial services. In 2020, New Mexico received $41 million in PILT funds and $9.3 million in SRS funds. SRS and PILT serve as a lifeline to rural America's local governments and now, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the budgets of these rural counties have taken a hit. These two programs fund roads, schools, law enforcement, and essential county services, such as public health programs. With additional demands on their resources as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, rural communities and counties are stretched thinner than ever, wrote the senators. Congress must include a reauthorization of SRS, including the programmatic amendments to S. 430 passed on a broad bipartisan basis in the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The bill must now pass the Senate before going to the president's desk to be signed into law. In New Mexico, we know how vital water is to preserving our economy, our environment, and our way of life. The Water Resources Development Act ensures we are making smart investments in water infrastructure and meeting the needs of our changing climate, said Udall, the lead Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. This bill also includes provisions to ensure the federal government is honoring our obligations to Native communities by consulting with Tribes and ensuring meaningful engagement with local communities on water projects. The Senate should quickly pass this important legislation to help our state prepare for the water challenges that the future holds. Senator Heinrich's remarks as prepared for delivery are below: It is my honor to commend the Senior Senator from New Mexico, my longtime partner in this chamber, and my good friend, Tom Udall, for his years of service to our state and to our nation. Before I speak about Tom, I would like to quickly take a moment to also recognize the service of Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small over these last two years. Congresswoman Torres Small actually served for a time in Senator Udall's office in Las Cruces. For these last two years in the House of Representatives, she has dedicated herself to delivering resources for the people of southern New Mexico. I am so grateful to have served alongside Xochitl in our congressional delegation, and I am greatly looking forward to seeing how she will contribute her heart and talents to New Mexico next. Now let me tell you a little bit about our senior senator. One of the first times I ever spent any serious time with Tom Udall was actually on horseback. Tom was serving at that time as the Congressman for northern New Mexico's 3rd District, while I was leading the Coalition for New Mexico Wilderness. Together, we rode into the rugged mesas and canyons east of Las Vegas, New Mexico that we both hoped could soon be designated as the Sabinoso Wilderness. It was clear right away that he shared my sense of wonder in wild places and a strong commitment to protect precious landscapes for future generations. Weahkee condemning a recent decision to decrease essential services at the Acoma-Canoncito-Laguna (ACL) Hospital. The Pueblo of Acoma has seen a spike in COVID-19 cases. Over a matter of weeks, cases on the Pueblo went from zero in September to 100 in early November. With the recent suspension of emergency services and inpatient care at ACL, the community must now drive one hour or longer to hospitals in Grants or Albuquerque that are already reaching capacity. ACL's benefit to the Pueblo of Acoma and the surrounding community cannot be underscored. As the only hospital between Grants and Albuquerque on Interstate-40, ACL serves as a lifeline for the health and safety of this community, which is only amplified during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. I continue to acknowledge and support the Pueblo of Laguna's right to contract their own health services; however, providing uninterrupted and full capacity hospital services at ACL should remain a top priority for IHS during the COVID-19 pandemic, wrote Heinrich. Heinrich continued, As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionally affected tribal communities, in part due to a lack of environmental and public health infrastructure. IHS' actions with ACL only compound this. In 2019, ACL served 90,000 patients. IHS' actions will now leave many of these patients without the care they need, in the midst of a deadly and vicious pandemic. In the 1990s, a spill of toxic waste from a closed mine killed fish in the river for more than 11 miles. It took decades and millions of dollars to clean up that previous mine, and the last thing this area needs are new mines that would pose a new threat to the Pecos River. Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01),Co-Chairof the Congressional Native American Caucus, released the following statement on the Health and Human Services decision to close the Acoma, Laguna, Canoncito Hospital during a pandemic: Heath care services need to be accessible for every community, especially during a global pandemic, but this Administration made an irresponsible decision to close a health care center in Acoma. This pandemic does not discriminate and its toll in communities of color has revealed the longstanding disparities that exist in Indian Country. This Administration is putting lives in danger and needlessly increasing patients' and families' distress. I'll be looking into this decision and expecting answers from HHS. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Tribes across the country have met this crisis with resilience, but their federal partners aren't rising to the challenge. Cutting essential services, like the closure of IHS's ACL service unit, while New Mexico is experiencing a dangerous surge in COVID-19 cases statewide, is a threat to public health for Native families and for the entire state. It's wrong. It's dangerous. And, it's a complete dereliction of duty. IHS needs to provide clear, direct answers about where the people of Acoma, Laguna, and To'hajiilee are going to be able to access emergency and hospital care during this public health crisis. Throughout this pandemic, I've heard directly from Tribes about their urgent and ongoing needs for healthcare and economic resources to combat the virus. That's why I worked so hard to make sure we included $10 billion in relief funds for Tribal governments in the CARES Act. Yet, I continue to hear how existing federal policies, practices, and program structures have left Native communities particularly exposed to severe and long-lasting impacts. This pandemic is not over, and the call to live up to our trust and treaty responsibilities is still paramount. We must continue the work to build a stronger, better Indian Health Service system so that hea… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) praised the agreement to get clean water to the To'Hajiilee Chapter of the Navajo Nation after the To'Hajiilee Task Force reached a settlement. The community currently haulsin water from Albuquerque for its school and member use.The global pandemic exacerbated the urgency for clean potable water for the chapter's members and those who work for the school, healthcare center, and administrative offices. The water project can now move forward and it is estimated the pipeline will be pumping water to To'Hajiilee the summer of 2021. Every community deserves clean water for drinking, cooking, and to maintain their health, but To'Hajiilee didn't have access to water in their community. Now, the To'Hajiilee Chapter of the Navajo Nation can look forward to clean, potable water. I applaud the work of the To'Hajiilee Chapter, Bernalillo County Commissioners, and State Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto for elevating this health and safety matter and coming together for the greater good, said Congresswoman Deb Haaland. During the past few months, the To'Hajiilee Task Force convened numerous sessions to deliberate a settlement and terms with Western Albuquerque Land Holdings and other owners.State Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto volunteered to mediate the sessions and helped To'Hajiillee finally access potable water. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

In 2019, Udall announced that he would not seek a third term in the U.S. Senate. READ HERE: SENATOR TOM UDALL A CONSERVATION CHAMPION Conservation is a winner: for the economy, for nature, for the climate, and for our way of life. Human health and prosperity depend on the global ecosystems of wildlife that sustain the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat, Udall said. It has been an honor to work with a diverse array of communities and Tribes in New Mexico and across the United States to build grassroots coalitions and secure long-sought wins that protect our natural treasures for all to enjoy and create jobs for our economy. From New Mexico's two newest National Monuments, to the historic, bipartisan enactment of full and permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, to setting a new national goal of conserving 30 percent of our land and waters by 2030, I'm proud of what we've done together. With more and more Americans calling for greater action on conservation, we need to build on our success and ensure that everyone has access to the great outdoors, including communities of color and disadvantaged communities. By doing so, we will not only help save our planet but help save ourselves and future generations. Print Email Tweet Next Article Previous Article 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Instead, each generation is called on to protect and renew our commitment to democracy and freedom and veterans have selflessly answered this call with unmatched courage. New Mexico families have a proud tradition of service, from the Navajo Code Talkers, to the veterans of Bataan, to the service members in uniform today. Last year, my staff and I had the privilege of collecting the stories of New Mexico veterans across the state as part of the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project. It was a profound honor to listen to the stories veterans have to share, and to work to ensure that the experiences of Native and Hispanic veterans are well-documented in the Veterans History Project. I hope that families and communities across New Mexico will take on this project to hear and record veterans' stories for the Library of Congress as their own. We must ensure that the men and women who have sacrificed to defend our nation are remembered and uplifted for generations to come. And that we vigorously defend the Constitution in peace as they did during war. Today also marks the completion of the Native American Veterans Memorial. It is only right that the Native veterans who were prepared to sacrifice everything to defend their land and their country are given a place … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

If Republicans are successful in their efforts, insurance companies can go back to denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions, young adults under the age of 26 will no longer be covered under their parents' plans, patients will no longer receive free annual exams and wellness checks, and women can be charged more for the same health care. The Medicaid expansion that has helped so many hardworking families get covered would be gone. The only proposal we've seen from Republicans would increase premiums, put an age tax on Americans 55 years and older, and would not protect people with pre-existing conditions. Their lawsuit is shameful and without merit, and I hope the Supreme Court will see it for what it is. In 2019, Udall announced that he would not seek a third term in the U.S. Senate. READ HERE: SENATOR TOM UDALL ADVANCING PRIORITIES FOR INDIAN COUNTRY It has been my honor to represent New Mexico's 23 Tribes and Pueblos in Congress, and to work alongside leaders and advocates from the United States' 574 federally-recognized Tribes, fighting for a prosperous, healthy, and safe future for Native communities,Udall said. Together, we have made great strides reinforcing the principles of Tribal sovereignty and self-determination, supporting Native economies and health care, and protecting and sustaining Native cultural resources and languages. The United States has a solemn obligation to uphold its trust and treaty responsibilities, and as the 116th Congress concludes, I will continue to work alongside American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians to ensure that the federal government is living up to its promises to Native communities across the country. I fully support the Appropriations Committee's efforts to enact an omnibus by the end of the year. During that process, I will work to resolve a number of outstanding concerns about this draft in the final Interior Appropriations bill, starting with the funding level of the bill itself. We simply need more resources to fund programs that address existential threats such as climate change, imperiled species, and crumbling infrastructure, improve the lives of American Indians and Alaska Natives, and support the nation's arts and cultural institutions. I am also troubled that the draft continues a number of anti-environmental policy riders from previous years that would bind the incoming Biden-Harris administration before they are even in office and need to be removed, including language to block protections for the sage grouse. Over the past six years, Chairman Murkowski and I have worked through countless tough issues and enacted several very good bills. I expect that this year will be no exception. I am committed to working with my colleagues to resolve these issues and enact a strong, full-year Interior Appropriations bill. Today,Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) introduced the House companion bill to Senator Brian Schatz's (D-HI) announced her introduction of the Native American Languages Resource Center Act, a bill to create a designated resource center for the protection and stability of Native American language education. Congress funded 16 Centers for Foreign Language Excellence in various universities to provide support for foreign language learning. Yet, no such center has been established for Native American languages, even though the federal government has a trust responsibility to Native Nations. The beauty of a Native language is something that has been passed down from generation to generation, but the federal government has fallen short on resources to teach these languages. I learned some Kares from my grandparents and my mom, who still speaks our language fluently, but we're at risk of losing the language and the traditional knowledge that comes with it. That's why Senator Schatz and I introduced Native American Languages Resource Center Act. This bill will protect our Native languages and ensure the next generation has access to the traditions of our ancestors.,said Congresswoman Deb Haaland, Vice-Chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus Over the past three decades Native-run nonprofits and tribal entities have developed exceptional Native American language immersion programs. The COVID-19 crisis threatens to destroy 30 years of progress made by grassroots efforts in vulnerable communities, progress that may not be able to be fully restored without prompt intervention. Operating with limited resources, Native American language schools and programs desperately need coordinated, experienced support in best practices, including how to use technology to instruct, develop teaching materials, and certify Native American language teachers. This is a win not only for the Biden-Harris ticket, but also a win for New Mexico's working families, for decency, for unity, for our health, for our planet, and for our democracy. I'm especially proud that this message of progress and unity resonated so strongly in New Mexico, in Indian Country, and across the Southwest. As President-Elect Biden has said so many times, he will be a president for all Americans not just those who voted for him. That is the spirit that we must all strive toward. It will take mutual respect and cooperation to solve the pressing challenges that we are facing: the devastation this virus has caused our health and economy, and the crises facing our democracy, our climate, and the natural world. We are going to need to heal our divisions as we work to build this country back better to create a more equitable, more prosperous, and healthier future. Today,Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01)released the following statement after the Department of Interior failed to meet thestatutorydeadline to submit its list of projects to fund under the Great American Outdoors Act. Interior's deadline to submit a list of projects it wants to fund was November 2. All Americans deserve the resources for their public parks and outdoor spaces but once again the Trump Administration is taking that away from our families. Though they took acampaignvictory lap about the Great American Outdoors Act, I am astounded by their vendettaagainst conservation funding they celebrated just days ago. It was obvious from the start that their support of the Great American Outdoors Act was a ploy to win votes in a close election year. I urge the Trump Administration to submit their list of designated projects for Fiscal Year 2021funding. Otherwise Congress will step in to ensure protection of the millions of dollars in funding that was set aside for environmental conservation and restoration, said Congresswoman Haaland, Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources. President Trump signed the Great American Outdoors Act into lawin August, which set aside $9.5 billion dedicated to address maintenance for public lands. In that budget was funding set aside for various conservation projects. As of November 5, the Department of the Interior has neglected to provide the required list of projects to be funded. Investing in public lands and fighting climate change are at the top of Haaland's priorities. In July,Congresswoman Haaland in her role as Chair of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, chaired a forum on sustainable job creation to bounce back from the pandemic.Haaland led the discussion on policies to create new conservation-oriented jobs around the country to support both the economy and the environment. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The bipartisan bill includes legislation championed by Senator Heinrich that reauthorizes the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) through 2025 and increases funding for the program to $60 million for each of Fiscal Years 2021 through 2025. The ACE Act also reauthorizes the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Establishment Act, reauthorizes or establishes several other key wildlife conservation programs, and helps to address wildlife diseases like Chronic Wasting Disease and combat invasive species. A hundred years from now, people are going to look back at this time in Congress and talk a lot about the challenges, the changes, and strife. And then they're going to see some bright spots. What we've been able to accomplish for habitat, for wildlife, and for public lands in this year alone has been remarkableand that includes passing the ACE Act, said Heinrich. Our public lands and outdoor recreation are a uniting force. I am proud to help lead this latest effort to conserve wildlife and ecosystems, enhance opportunities for outdoor recreation, and put people back to work restoring our public lands. NAWCA was enacted in 1989 to provide federal cost-share fundingalongside funding from state and local governments, non-profit organizations like Ducks Unlimited, and private industryto projects that conserve North America's waterfowl, fish, and wildlife resources. First observed in 1990, Native American Heritage Month is set aside to recognize Native American contributions to our country and celebrate Native American culture, languages, and traditions. The month of November is set aside to honor and celebrate the contributions of Native Americans to our country, but this year we're urged to keep healthy by staying in our homes while Indian Country is being ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. During this Native American heritage month, we need to reflect on systemic racism and on the failures of the federal government to uphold its trust responsibility to Native Nations. Native Americans have overcome many hardships since the onset of colonization -- genocide, forced relocation and assimilation -- but we're still here. Our cultures, languages, and traditions live on adding to the fabric of our country. As we celebrate the resilience of Native communities, we must work to ensure the federal government upholds tribal sovereignty and that we move toward a culture shift that learns from the dark pages of our history to build a more equitable and brighter future, said Congresswoman Deb Haaland, Co-Chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus. Congresswoman Deb Haaland is committed to making issues facing Native Amreicans more visible on the national level. Joint Statement from Senator Warren and Congresswoman Haaland: Today's vote to censor not just the report, but any official Commission statements on the pandemic's impact on Native Americans, is disgraceful and a missed opportunity, especially because tribal communities have been disproportionately impacted by the virus. It also reinforces a pattern of the federal government minimizing and disregarding the needs ofand obligations toNative Americans. By suppressing this report, certain members of the Commission highlight the need for more scrutinynot lessof this administration's failure to uphold its responsibilities to Native Americans. In May 2020, Senator Warren and Congresswoman Haaland asked the USCCR to update its landmark report, Broken Promises: Continuing Federal Funding Shortfall for Native Americans, in light of the pandemic's ongoing impacts on Native Nations across the United States. They wrote: The Administration's failure to uphold the trust responsibility to provide adequate relief, health services, and public safety resources to tribal communities has exacerbated the pandemic's impact. This failure requires the Commission's voice. The USCCR voted to take up this request. The USCCR then completed the work of collecting important and illuminating testimony from Native advocates and leaders on the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on American Indian and Alaska Native people, and drafted a written update to Broken Promises. The Day of Remembrance honors American workers who supported the nation's nuclear weapons efforts from World War II through the Cold War, as well as nuclear program workers today who continue this heroic legacy to advance nuclear power, nuclear medicine, scientific innovation, and other technology that keeps our country safe. Today, we honor the thousands of miners, millers, maintenance workers, scientists, support staff, and families in New Mexico and across the country whose sacrifice has too often gone unrecognized, said Udall.During the Cold War, thousands of New Mexicans made tremendous sacrifices to build the country's first nuclear weapons and mine the uranium to protect our national defense. Many of these brave Americans have been left out of programs Congress has designated to care for and compensate nuclear workers including the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act program and the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program. While we can never take away the years of pain and suffering these families have endured as a result of their service, we can take action to make them whole. The NALA, which was led bySenators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii),John McCain (R-Ariz.),Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), and others, was enacted on October 30, 1990. For the first time in U.S. history, federal law formally rejected past policies that sought to suppress use of Native American languages and recognized the rights and freedoms of Native Americans to use their traditional languages. The new bill announced by Udall is named after Durbin Feeling, a renowned Cherokee linguist and Vietnam veteran who passed away on August 19, 2020. It would direct the president to review federal agencies' compliance with NALA requirements and make recommendations to improve interagency coordination in support of Native American languages. It will also authorize a federal survey of Native language use and language revitalization program unmet needs every five years. These surveys will serve as health checks to allow Native communities and Congress to improve targeting of federal resources for Native American languages. Native languages hold within them the culture, history, and resiliency of their communities. Over the last 30 years, catalyzed by theNative American Languages Act, Congress has promoted the protection and revitalization of Native languages, said Udall.Throughout my congressional career, I have worked to support these language revitalization efforts. This week, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) joined a bill that would help keep schools safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Safe Schools Act, introduced by Rep. Chuy Garcia (Ill.-04), to provide $17 billion to school districts to pay for PPE, cleaning supplies, technical training, and additional staff support needed to keep students, educators, and communities healthy. As New Mexico schools face a surge in coronavirus cases, administrators and teachers are struggling to acquire adequate PPE. Schools managed tight budgets before COVID-19 and the emergency relief funding in the CARES Act helped schools with initial moves to remote learning. Now, many districts are moving to hybrid models and bringing students back into the classroom creating a need for PPE, hand sanitizer, and other supplies to keep students, teachers, and staff healthy. Our teachers and school districts are doing everything they can to keep our students from falling into the gaps during this pandemic, but the Trump Administration continues to push reopening without giving them the proper resources. The PPE for Safe Schools Act works to address this, by providing crucial funding for our schools that will make sure we keep school staffs, teachers, students and the broader community healthy, said Congresswoman Deb Haaland. The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected our education system. Whether in-person, remote, or a combination of both, students and teachers have returned to vastly different classrooms this fall in Chicago and around our country. Despite the uncertainty, one thing is clear: students, educators, and support staff returning to in-person classes should not have to worry about risking their own health. That is why we are introducing the PPE for Safe Schools Act, said Rep. Jess Chuy Garca. It is simply irresponsible to have our kids return to school without proper safety measures in place. Our teachers, staff, and students need safe schools now. The COVID-19 pandemic has d… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, U.S. Representatives Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02), Elise Stefanik (NY-21), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), and Van Taylor (TX-03) led a bipartisan effort calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to provide a briefing on U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) plans to deploy Autonomous Surveillance Towers (AST) along the country's southwest, northern, and maritime borders. This follows the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP)'s announcement designating the Autonomous Surveillance Towers (AST) system as a Program of Record for the USBP. The Members also highlighted the cost-effective and efficient manner of AST systems which utilizes solar-powered radar scanning technology to track movement along the border: As strong supporters of innovative technology to secure our borders, we believe AST is the type of modern technology that fits into a fair and efficient border security strategy based on a mile-by-mile needs analysis of our borders, wrote the Members. The use of AST reflects Torres Small's vision of border policy that reflects the mile-by-mile needs of its residents and border patrol agents. The Members continued: While we applaud CBP for this accomplishment and for quickly transitioning AST from a pilot to a Program of Record, we want to ensure this technology is deployed in all southwest USBP sectors, including in New Mexico and Arizona, to prevent Transnational Criminal Organizations from exploiting potential security gaps between the sectors in which AST systems are currently deployed. Indeed, the landscape in New Mexico and Arizona is ideal for AST, since this technology is especially useful in mountainous areas where wall construction can be impractical or unfeasible, and in remote and rural areas, which according to USBP are perfectly suited' for AST. "Expanding opportunities in our parks and public lands has to be a part of our national recovery. These are the places where all of us belong. These lands are our lands, and they heal us in a way few things can, said Senator Heinrich. Especially for kids, our public lands are outdoor classrooms with endless opportunities to learn and can inspire a lifelong connection to conservation. I'm pleased the Department of the Interior heeded our call to grant this extension. By extending the Every Kid Outdoors pass into the next year, millions of students and their families can continue to enjoy America's public lands for free and we can help the outdoor recreation economy recover from the pandemic." "The Trump Administration signed an order granting fifth graders and their families free entrance to all federal lands and waters, including national parks more than 2,000 sites in all. This is great news because it will allow students who were not able to take advantage of the Every Kid Outdoors Annual Fourth Grade Pass because of COVID-19 to do so this academic year. The Every Kid Outdoors Act, which I helped introduce in the U.S. Senate and President Trump signed into law, is aimed at encouraging kids to get outdoors and experience America's public spaces, while engaging in healthy activity and educational programs," said Senator Alexander. The licenses are granted through the FCC's first-of-its-kind Rural Tribal Priority Window, which allows tribal communities to apply for the first set of spectrum licenses and access currently unlicensed spectrum for use on rural tribal land. Following a review of applications, 15 Tribes in New Mexico are now able to use a portion of the 2.5 GHz band to provide broadband and other advanced wireless services in their communities. The New Mexico Delegation fought to extend the Rural Tribal Priority Window given the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on tribal communities, with the deadline ultimately extended by 30 days. Every Tribal community should have access to reliable broadband, said Udall, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. That's why I have pushed for the FCC to expand priority windows for Tribes in the CARES Act, and extend the 2.5 GHz Tribal Priority Window for an additional 180 days, as a vital step forward to bridge the Tribal digital divide to connect schools, hospitals and businesses for economic growth. I introduced the Bridging the Tribal Digital Divide Act to mobilize resources to address this inequality, and I will continue to fight for the necessary broadband funding and resources so that all Native communities can get connected in the digital age. New Mexico is currently experiencing a spike in COVID-19 infections, as its rate of new infections is one of the highest in the country. In a joint letter, the New Mexico delegation emphasized the need to provide PPE for the 23 Tribes and Pueblos across New Mexico that have been hit disproportionately hard by the coronavirus. The New Mexico delegation previously called on the Trump administration to release the state of New Mexico's full allotment of PPE in March after the state only received 25 percent of the total PPE it requested. As flu season approaches and the COVID-19 infection rate continues to hit record highs in New Mexico, the state and Tribal governments combating the simultaneous spikes in flu and COVID-19 cases will require a significantly greater amount of PPE to protect frontline health care workers and essential workers as they care for hospitalized patients. While access to PPE has stabilized somewhat over the past several months, we remain concerned that these early failures of the SNS to meet New Mexico's needs will repeat themselves as case numbers once again begin to spike, the delegation wrote. New Mexico is already experiencing a troubling spike in new COVID-19 infections and has set a new daily record for infections three times in the past week. Hospitalizations are up 74%, and some of our hospitals are beginning to reach capacity. The rate of new infections is now among the highest in the country and coincides with the first report of confirmed flu cases in the state on October… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Last week,U.S. Representative Deb Haaland (NM-01)introduced a bipartisan bill withRepresentatives Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Mike Turner (R-OH), and Bill Posey (R-FL)to protect military servicemembers and their families from PFAS forever chemicals contamination, which have been shown to lead to adverse health effects. According to data from the Department of Defense, there are over 700 current and former military installations with known or suspected PFAS contamination. According to theEnvironmental Working Group(EWG), there are more than200 military sitesacross the country with known PFAS contamination in drinking water or groundwater. In New Mexico, tests have detected PFAS in on-base groundwater on and near Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, where 31,000 residents rely on groundwater within the Tularosa Basin. PFAS has also been found to contaminate water on and near Cannon Air Force Base. Cannon AFB is located near Clovis, N.M., a community of about 39,000 where agricultural operations have beendisruptedby the contamination. Contamination at both sites is expected to be due to the use of firefighting foams containing PFAS. Coming from a military family, I know firsthand all that our military families sacrifice throughout their service. That's why I'm proud to have introduced the PFAS Exposure Assessment and Documentation Act with my colleagues across the aisle, to continue protecting our military service members and their families. This bill will increase testing and tracking of PFAS contamination, allowing us to curb any adverse effects from exposure, said Rep. Haaland, member of the House Armed Services Committee. The PFAS Exposure Assessment and Documentation Act takes bold steps to strengthen testing and tracking PFAS exposure in servicemembers, by mandating blood testing for PFAS chemicals for those who may have been exposed, and allowing military families to also get tested for PFAS exposure. The bill also opens up testing to former servicemembers and their families, allowing them to g… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Hokanson requesting an assessment of the National Guard's current firefighting capabilities to better coordinate resources with state and local efforts. The senators requested that the National Guard provide an assessment of trained personnel and equipment availability and work to develop coordinated regional planning with governors. New Mexico's National Guard and Air National Guard have been critical in providing lifesaving community support during the COVID-19 pandemic and wildfire season. Udall and Heinrich joined the request for further coordinated assessment as state firefighters are battling the Luna Fire in Carson National Forest and as climate change is exacerbating the damage of fire season across the country. As devastating fires of historic proportion continue to ravage the United States, we ask you to provide us an assessment of the National Guard's ability to prepare for, respond to, and help state firefighting forces recover from wildfires, the senators wrote. A frank estimation will help Congress address any gaps and use every resource available to respond to this year's fires. It will also help us better resource and equip the Guard for a future in which human-driven climate change will make fire seasons increasingly severe and destructive. We urge you to be candid both about any current challenges and any gaps you think will emerge as increasingly destructive wildfire seasons put greater demands on the National Guard, the senators concluded. WASHINGTON Today,U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.), member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, questioned Chief Executive Officers of Twitter, Facebook, and Alphabet, Inc. (Google) on the role and responsibility of their platforms to protect American users from foreign interference and disinformation campaigns. The U.S. Intelligence community has found that the Russian government is intent on election interference in the United States. They did it in 2016, they're doing it in 2020. The intelligence also says they want to help President Trump. We also know that the Russian strategy this time around is going after Hunter Biden. So I recognize that the details of how to handle misinformation on the internet are tough, but I think that companies like Twitter and Facebook, that took action to not be a part of a suspected Russian election interference operation, were doing the right thing,Udall said in his opening statement. And let me be clear, no one believes these companies represent the law or represent the public. When we say work the refs,' the U.S. government is the referee. The FCC, the Congress, the Presidency and the Supreme Court are the referees. It's very dangerous for President Trump, Justice Thomas and Republicans in Congress and at the FCC to threaten new federal laws in order to force social media companies to amplify false claims, to conspiracy theories and disinformation campaigns. Udall pressed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in addition to Jack Dorsey of Twitter and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Inc., on the influence of the Russian government and other foreign actors in spreading misinformation campaigns to affect the results of the 2020 presidential election. Udall scrutinized the stated purpose of the hearingcalled by Republican lawmakersto examine conservati… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The president's recent executive orderdesigned to gut longstanding civil service protections for the many dedicated New Mexicans and Americans who keep our government runningis nothing short of a direct assault on the federal workforce. The civil service is designed to uphold the critical functions of our government with non-partisan professionals. Many New Mexicans proudly serve in the federal civil service and contribute to their communities and to our nation. Some individuals are quite literally putting out fires in New Mexico and across the West, while others are conducting critical scientific research for a coronavirus vaccine. President Trump's executive order threatens to upend the careers of hardworking civil servants to install cronies who serve their own personal and political interests over the interests of the American people. During a presidential election year, it's even more critical that our government retains the institutional knowledge of career civil servants to safeguard the trust of the American people and our long-term public policy interests. I will be standing firm to defend federal workers against the president's brazen attempts to bend the U.S. government to his political and corrupt wishes just days before the electio… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
