http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-announces-introduction-of-legislation-to-protect-nevada-s-budding-medical Titus Announces Introduction of Legislation to Protect Nevadas Budding Medical Marijuana Industry 2015-04-22 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 22, 2015 Washington, DC Today Congresswoman Dina Titus announced the introduction of the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act to preserve states rights and ensure that individuals and businesses following the laws of the State of Nevada, and other states where marijuana use is legal, are protected from federal prosecution. Titus is an original cosponsor of the bipartisan legislation reintroduced today in the House of Representatives. State adoption of marijuana laws and accompanying regulations has created a legal patchwork of conflicting state, local, and federal statutes, said Titus. As more states join Nevada in adopting medical marijuana laws and accompanying regulations, it is essential that Congress address the issue to preserve states rights and ensure patients and businesses are protected from federal prosecution. The bill is led by Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and is cosponsored by Reps. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Don Young (R-AK), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Thomas Massie (R-KY), Jared Polis (D-CO), Justin Amash (R-MI), and Mark Pocan (D-WI). 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-calls-on-va-to-quickly-find-a-qualified-leader-to-serve-as-new-director-of-the Titus Calls on VA to Quickly Find a Qualified Leader to Serve as New Director of the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System 2015-04-20 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 20, 2015 Las Vegas, NV Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District and Member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee sent a letter to Veteran Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald requesting the VA work quickly to find a highly qualified leader to serve as the new Director of the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, following the retirement of current Director Isabel Duff. Last week, Ms. Duff announced her decision to retire after 35 years of service to our nations veterans. A copy of Titus letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald can be read here: April 20, 2015 Dear Secretary McDonald, After 35 years of service to our nations veterans, the Director of the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, Isabel Duff, has decided to retire. As you know, activating the new hospital has been a tremendous undertaking, and I appreciate all Ms. Duff has done to move the project forward, including opening of the inpatient units of the medical center, 24/7 ancillary services, the Womens Health Center, and planning for the Fisher House. I now respectfully request that you work to quickly find a highly qualified replacement for Ms. Duff. Southern Nevada is home to more than 155,000 veterans; that number is expected to increase considerably over the next decade. It is critical that the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System has a highly qualified leader to ensure that our nations heroes are receiving the best care possible. As construction and activation activities continue at the new hospital, it is also important that the new director have significant experience initiating new health care services. I am confident that you will quickly begin the search for a new director. I thank you for your attention to this issue and offer my services as needed. Sincerely, Dina Titus Member of Congress 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//news/floor-statements/titus-congratulates-the-fisher-house-foundation-on-25th-anniversary Titus Congratulates the Fisher House Foundation on 25th Anniversary 2015-04-16 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 16, 2015 Washington, D.C. Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District spoke on the House Floor to congratulate the Fisher House Foundation on 25 years of exemplary service to our military families. The Fisher House Foundation provides comfortable housing to families of veterans who are receiving medical treatment. Below are her remarks: Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate the Fisher House Foundation on their 25th Anniversary and to thank them for their services to our military and veteran families. The Fisher House Foundation is the result of the vision and efforts by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher. They wanted to provide a home away from home for the families of servicemen and women while their loved ones receive treatment. And their vision has come to fruition. Since the first Fisher House opened in 1990, over 250,000 families have saved $282 million in lodging and transportation costs. The 64 locations throughout the United States and Germany have provided families 5.8 million days of lodging. Just a few weeks ago, I was fortunate and proud to participate in the ground breaking of Nevadas first Fisher House located across the street from our new VA Hospital and what a wonderful day it was. So congratulations, Fisher House Foundation, and thank you and your volunteers for all you do to make a difficult time just a little easier for our nations heroes. Thank you and I yield back. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-statement-on-bill-to-make-permanent-sales-tax-deduction Titus Statement on Bill to Make Permanent Sales Tax Deduction 2015-04-16 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 16, 2015 Washington, DC Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First Congressional District released the following statement on HR 622, the State and Local Sales Tax Deduction Fairness Act of 2015, to make permanent the local and state sales tax deduction in the federal tax code. This provision allows Nevadans and others living in states without local or state income taxes to deduct sales taxes from their federal tax return. Making permanent the state and local sales tax deduction not only simplifies the tax process, it also provides more certainty and tax fairness for hard working Nevada families and small businesses. I applaud the passage of this important provision, and call on my colleagues to build on this progress by working together on long-term tax reform. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-statement-on-appropriations-subcommittee-votes-on-failed-yucca-mountain-project Titus Statement on Appropriations Subcommittee Votes on Failed Yucca Mountain Project 2015-04-15 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 15, 2015 Washington, DC Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First Congressional District released the following statement in regards to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies consideration of the Fiscal Year 2016 Energy & Water Appropriations bill. The Energy & Water Subcommittee demonstrated a lack of judgement in the drafting of this bad bill, and doubled down by moving it to the full Committee with hundreds of millions of dollars more for the boondoggle of a project known as Yucca Mountain. Worse yet, the bill includes hush-money to try and buy off Nevada communities to support this dangerous endeavor. Nevada is not for sale. Our state does not have a single nuclear power plant, did not create this problem, and should never be the nations nuclear waste dumping ground. I urge the members of the full Committee to remove the Yucca language and concentrate on investments that move our nation forward, not backwards, when it comes to addressing our energy challenges. Any Members in our delegation who are open to even entertaining the idea of this dangerous project should be ashamed. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-statement-on-committee-passage-of-the-regulatory-integrity-protection-act Titus Statement on Committee-Passage of the Regulatory Integrity Protection Act 2015-04-15 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 15, 2015 Washington, DC Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First Congressional District released the following statement in regards to the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee consideration of H.R. 1732, the so-called Regulatory Integrity Protection Act. Consideration of this legislation is beyond premature. I have been forthcoming with my concerns about the proposed rule by the EPA and the Army Corps to define Waters of the United States under the Clean Water Act. It is vital that any final rule provides certainty and clarity for our local communities, developers, ranchers, and farmers. Trying to press the reset button on a rule that has not yet been finalized and before anyone has even had a chance to see it, is bad policy. I look forward to reviewing the final rule and consulting with our local stakeholders prior to casting judgment. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//in-the-news/take-five-rep-dina-titus Take Five: Rep. Dina Titus 2015-04-14 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 14, 2015 Its time again for Take Five, when HOH talks with a member of Congress about topics relatively unrelated to legislative work. This week, the multitalented (and potential Senate contender) Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., talks about teaching, traveling and tap dancing. Yes, tap dancing. Q: You have written [a book] about nuclear power and waste; can you tell me what prompted you to write [it], and what the process was like? Im an academic, so youre expected to do research and publication, and I enjoy writing and research. Its kind of like detective work, and that was especially the case for the atomic testing book that I wrote. I got interested in that when I worked as a faculty intern for Sen. Howard Cannon here in Washington back in 1982. Q: You were a professor of political science for [more than 30 years.] How is that different from doing politics, or are there any similarities? Well, when youre a professor you have the luxury of being a critic, and when youre in elected office its your neck on the line. But I think being a teacher made me a better public servant, and vice versa. All the time I was teaching, I was in the state Legislature. So students always like to know whats it really like besides just what the book says. My knowledge of the system helped me be better able to make public policy. Q: What is one thing that everyone should do when they visit Las Vegas? My district includes the fabulous Strip, the exciting arts district and the hip downtown. So I would say, when you get off the plane, take a picture in front of the iconic welcome sign, and then just travel the strip all the way. That shows you the old and the new, and its all very exciting. And you might want to take a picture with Liberace right outside our door here [in the Cannon office building]; youd be surprised how many people do! Q: What is your favorite pastime? Well, traveling with my husband. Hes a Latin American historian, and he teaches abroad a lot. Traveling is good, but when I cant travel, on the weekends I usually go… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

John Shimkus (R-Ill): "This taxpayer-funded junket does not move the conversation on long-term nuclear waste storage any closer to a solution. Nevada, which does not have a single nuclear waste plant, didnt create this problem, and should not be forced to be the nations dumping ground, Titus said. In March, Titus joined Rep. Joe Heck in introducing the Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act, the House companion to the Senate bill introduced by Nevada Senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller. The Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act permits the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to authorize construction of a nuclear waste repository only if the Secretary of Energy has secured written consent from the governor of the host state, affected units of local government, and affected Indian tribes. For far too long, supporters of the proposed Yucca Mountain repository have ignored the concerns of Nevada and its local communities. The Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act ensures that our voices are heard and respected when it comes to our states future, Titus said. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

As a member of the House Committee on Veteran Affairs, the Congresswoman has been a leading voice on behalf of female veterans. In response to Titus October 2014 request, the VA Committee will hold a hearing on April 30 to examine access and quality of care and services for women veterans. Additionally, Titus last month led a letter to Richard Griffin, Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Veterans Affairs, requesting a review of VA and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies to better identify the needs of female veterans I have met with many of our communitys female veterans who have shared serious concerns with the quality and access to care they have received through the VA. As the population of female veterans continues to grow in Nevada and across the country, it is imperative that the VA take immediate action to address these issues and modernize its services to adapt to the unique needs of our nations female heroes, said Titus. I look forward to hosting Director Basnight in Las Vegas for a much needed discussion on improving care and support for Southern Nevadas female veterans. The full text of the letter can be found here: April 6, 2015 Dear Ms. Basnight, Thank you for taking the time to meet with me recently to discuss the Center for Women Veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs and ways that we can work together to improve services and access for the growing population of female veterans. As you know, this is a priority for me as I continue my work on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. According to the VA, Nevada is home to more than 21,000 female veterans. http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-announces-3-million-in-counter-terrorism-funding-for-the-las-vegas-metropolitan Titus Announces $3 Million in Counter-Terrorism Funding for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area 2015-04-02 2015 2015-04 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy April 2, 2015 Las Vegas, NV - Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will award the Las Vegas Urban Area $3 million as part of the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant program. This grant award is a $2 million increase from last years UASI grant allocation. Titus has been actively working with officials from the Department of Homeland Security to increase UASI funding for the Las Vegas metropolitan area. She has also urged DHS to replace the flawed methodology used to make counterterrorism funding decisions so as to better reflect the unique nature of Las Vegas and other cities with a significant number of visitors. I am glad the Department of Homeland Security has recognized the importance of increasing funding for Las Vegas through the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). These funds are critical for ensuring the safety of our 1.5 million residents and the 42 million visitors that we welcome every year. I will continue to work with DHS to improve their funding formulas to better evaluate the unique nature of tourist destination cities like Las Vegas. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This funding will be used to provide services to very low-income veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. When the brave men and women of our armed services go into battle, they pledge never to leave a fellow soldier behind. We need to do the same when they return home, said Titus. These funds will help veterans in Las Vegas receive the support they need to find permanent housing thus reducing veteran homelessness in our community. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-introduces-weekends-without-hunger-act-0 Titus Introduces Weekends Without Hunger Act 2015-03-30 2015 2015-03 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy March 30, 2015 Las Vegas, NV Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District announced today that she has introduced the Weekends Without Hunger Act, legislation to help prevent high-risk children from going hungry when they are not in school. With 58 percent of Clark County school children relying on free and reduced price lunch programs, more than 170,000 students in Southern Nevada are facing hunger at home, and many depend on school meals as their main source of food throughout the week, Congresswoman Titus said. As students across Southern Nevada start their week long Spring Break, far too many of these young men and women will go hungry without access to the school meals they depend on as their main source of food throughout the week. Vacation from school should never mean hunger for children. This legislation will fill a gap in federal programming and provide funding for nutritious meals to ensure that vacation from school does not mean hunger for children. Childhood hunger is a serious issue in Clark County and throughout our country. This bill fills a critical need in our community by providing a nutritious meal to students who would not otherwise have access to food on weekends and during school breaks, Rick Moonen, Chef/Owner of Rick Moonens rm seafood said. I applaud Congresswoman Titus and her incredible commitment to ending childhood hunger. Rick Moonens commitment to fighting hunger in our community is unparalleled, and I am honored to have his support on this legislation, said Titus. Rick Moonen has supported the Weekends Without Hunger Act since it was first introduced by Congresswoman Titus in 2010. The Weekends Without Hunger Act will establish a five-year pilot program that provides commodities to eligible institutions, such as schools and food banks, to carry out projects that provide nutritious food to at-risk school children over the weekend and school holidays during the school year. His leadership on issues of health care and environmental protection has left legislative landmarks unlikely ever to be matched. http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-leads-bipartisan-group-to-reintroduce-the-veteran-spouses-equal-treatment-act Titus Leads Bipartisan Group to Reintroduce the Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act 2015-03-25 2015 2015-03 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy March 25, 2015 Washington, D.C. Today Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV), Ranking Member of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, led a bipartisan group of colleagues to reintroduce the Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act, to ensure all military families have equal access to the benefits they earned serving our country. The bill is cosponsored by Representatives Mike Coffman (R-CO), John Conyers (D-MI), Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Richard Hanna (R-NY), David Jolly (R-FL), Beto O'Rourke (D-TX), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R- FL), Mark Takano (D-CA), and Adam Smith (D-WA). Nearly two years ago a landmark Supreme Court decision struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and effectively extended federal benefits to all legally married couples, including those under the Department of Defense. Yet, gay and lesbian veterans and their spouses continue to face obstacles when accessing the VA benefits to which they are entitled. This is due to outdated federal laws governing VA benefits which bar access to benefits for same-sex couples who reside in a state that does not recognize their marriage. The Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act aligns the VA laws with other federal agencies ensuring access to federal VA benefits for thousands of deserving military spouses. These benefits include surviving spouse benefits, dependency benefits, and home loans. "Every military family deserves our respect and admiration for the sacrifices they make on behalf of this great nation, regardless of whom they love or where they live, said Rep. Dina Titus, Ranking Member of the House VA Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs. Our men and women in uniform do not serve in defense of a particular state, but of the United States. Thats why Congress must act now to pass the Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act. This bill is about protecting the right of our nations veterans to share the benefits they have earned to the person they have lawfully married, said Rep. http://titus.house.gov//news/floor-statements/titus-stands-up-for-lgbt-veteran-families Titus stands up for LGBT Veteran Families 2015-03-24 2015 2015-03 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy March 24, 2015 Washington, D.C. Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District spoke on the House Floor in advance of reintroducing her bill, The Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act, to ensure that all legally married same-sex veteran couples have access to federal VA benefits regardless of their state of residence. Below are her remarks: I rise today on behalf of the LGBT veterans who face discrimination by the very government they fought to defend and to urge my colleagues to join me in ending this injustice. Two years ago DOMA was struck down and most federal benefits were effectively extended to legally married same-sex couples. Yet, an outdated law continues to bar access to VA benefits for LGBT veteran families in states that do not recognize marriage equality. Our men and women in uniform do not serve in defense of a particular state, but of the United States. All veterans should have access to all federal benefits, regardless of where they live, just as they do when they are in the military. When President Lincoln laid out his vision of caring for veterans, he said we should support those who shall have borne the battle. He didnt say anything about discriminating against some because of whom they love. So please join me in ending this injustice and supporting the bipartisan Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act which I will reintroduce tomorrow. Thank you and I yield back. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-statement-on-doe-proposal-for-nuclear-waste-disposal Titus Statement on DOE Proposal for Nuclear Waste Disposal 2015-03-24 2015 2015-03 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy March 24, 2015 Washington, D.C. Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District released the following statement on the Department of Energy announcement of a new strategy for the disposal of high-level defense and commercial nuclear waste. The strategy recommends a consent-based approach and allows for different disposal pathways for defense and commercial waste. I applaud this decision by the Administration, and urge my colleagues in Congress to support the bipartisan, commonsense Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act, which would codify a consent-based process for the siting of nuclear waste depositories. No community should have waste pushed on them by the federal government without having a say, said Titus. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan signed an Executive Order calling for the disposal of defense and commercial nuclear waste in a dual-purpose repository. Today Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced that the Department has been authorized by President Obama to develop dual tracks for the disposition of defense and commercial waste as a way to move the nations nuclear waste policy forward utilizing a consent-based approach. This recommendation was identified by the Blue Ribbon Commission for Americas Nuclear Future and outlined in the bipartisan Senate legislation, the Nuclear Waste Administration Act. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//in-the-news/protecting-nevada-s-past-and-future Protecting Nevadas past and future 2015-03-23 2015 2015-03 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy March 23, 2015 U.S. Senator Harry Reid and Rep. Dina Titus have introduced legislation to permanently protect a reservoir of prehistoric Nevada history while preserving a slew of marvelous outdoor recreation activities. The region is known as the Basin and Range area, and the legislation to protect it is called the Garden Valley Withdrawal Act SB 196 in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and HR 857 in the House Committee on Natural Resources. Permanent protections would preserve the unusually intact and unspoiled Garden and Coal Valleys and the connections between eight distinct mountain ranges, conserving an intact landscape and ecosystem. All traditional uses of the land such as hunting and grazing would be protected under this legislation, while destructive forms of development such as oil and gas drilling, mining and built structures would be prohibited. On a recent cloudy Sunday morning, we drove two hours out of Las Vegas to Lincoln County to explore the Basin and Range landscape. It was time to experience what makes Basin and Range worth protecting. The entrance to our destination was a dirt road off State Route 318. As we gained elevation, snowflakes danced in the air around us, blanketing the landscape in white for miles. We came to a stop at the Mount Irish Archaeological District, located in the southern part of this more than 800,000acre area. Before long, we noticed the ancient carvings in the rocks: images of bighorn sheep, human-like figures and abstract symbols. These carvings were left behind thousands of years ago by people who once called this vast area home. Sherds of broken pottery and lithic flakes littered the ground and were on display for those of us with eyes attuned to such artifacts. http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-introduces-the-recognizing-achievement-in-classified-school-employees-racse-act Titus Introduces the Recognizing Achievement in Classified School Employees (RACSE) Act 2015-03-19 2015 2015-03 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy March 19, 2015 Washington, D.C. Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District re-introduced the Recognizing Achievement in Classified School Employees Act. This legislation acknowledges the dedicated work of classified school employees by seeking to establish a National Classified School Employees of the Year Award Program. Classified school employees are the bus drivers, secretaries, school nurses, custodians, and other support staff who keep schools running to help students learn and enable teachers to teach. Whether they are in the classroom alongside teachers, helping to establish and promote a high-quality instructional educational environment, or in a bus making sure that students arrive at school safely and on time so they are ready to learn, these classified employees play a vital role in our schools; and they should be recognized for the outstanding work that they do, Congresswoman Titus said. The Recognizing Achievement in Classified School Employees Act proposes the nomination of one classified school employee of the year for the Secretary of Educations approval. The award winner will be chosen from the following classified staff categories: paraprofessionals, clerical services, custodial and maintenance services, transportation services, food services, skilled trades, health and student services, security services, and technical services. Classified school employees work tirelessly to ensure the success of our students and public schools, Titus said. Yet too often their contributions go unrecognized. That is why I am proud to introduce a bill that would officially recognize their contribution to helping students meet the highest educational standards. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District released the following statement today in opposition to Republican efforts to undermine labor and working families by voting on S.J.Res 8, a Resolution of Disapproval challenging the National Labor Relations Boards (NLRB) recent rule changes: For decades, unions have fought to preserve the American dream, sustain the middle class, and protect our working families. Let us always remember the union men and women without whom Nevada wouldnt have made it this far: those who laid the railroads and built the Boulder Dam; who dug the mines and won the Cold War; who wait the tables and teach our children. When organized labor prospers, we all prosper, said Titus. Thats why I strongly oppose the Resolution of Disapproval and the latest Republican attempt to undermine labor and roll back workers rights. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District today spoke on the House Floor in opposition to the GOPs proposed budget for FY2016. Below are her remarks: You know, I never thought I'd be quoting Ronald Reagan, but There you go again. Another Republican budget that kicks the poor, the hungry, and the disabled to the curb; strangles the middle class, and deserts hard working families. There you go again. Another Republican budget that stymies research and development, abandons essential infrastructure, and stifles access to education. There you go again. Another Republican budget that robs senior citizens, degrades the environment, and devastates our cultural institutions. There you go again. Another so-called Republican path to prosperity thats really a road map to distress and decline for all but big corporations and the mega wealthy. Today, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced the Senate companion to the Titus legislation. It is essential that our local communities have a seat at the table when these critical decisions are made, said Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV). In Las Vegas, and cities across the country, the ability to move people and goods safely and efficiently is critical to all aspects of our economy. Empowering major businesses, travel and tourism authorities, and local entities as part of the process will ensure that projects reflect the economic development priorities in our communities. The Innovation in Surface Transportation Act will empower local communities to have a greater say in transportation investments. The legislation sets aside a portion of funding that state departments of transportation receive for an in-state, competitive grant program for transportation projects for local communities. Funding decisions for the grants would be made by a new board representing state and local leaders, as well as business organizations, travel and tourism authorities, bike and pedestrian safety groups, and others who are impacted by transportation decisions, but are not currently at the table when decisions about investments are made. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Bob Casey (D-PA) are original cosponsors of the Senate version of the Innovation in Surface Transportation Act. Additional House cosponsors include Representatives Gregg Harper (R-MS), Cheri Bustos (D-IL), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), and Matt Cartwright (D-PA). This legislation has received support from the AARP, League of American Bicyclists, and The National Center for Safe Routes to School. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

If granted, the stay will allow the federal government to move forward and begin accepting applications for expanded DACA and DAPA. I applaud the Department of Justice for taking action to correct the district courts flawed decision and allow the implementation of key protections for certain undocumented men, women, and children, including some 20,000 living in Southern Nevada. While the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals considers the Department of Justice request for a stay and as the appeals process moves forward, I remind those seeking relief under expanded DACA and DAPA to be prepared to file applications once the ruling is final. Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV) and Congressman Ryan Costello (R-PA) of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs led a letter to Richard Griffin, Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Veterans Affairs, requesting a review of VA and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies to better identify the needs of female veterans. Female veterans represent 10% of the population served by the VA, and that figure is expected to grow significantly. According to the Disabled American Veterans recent report, Women Veterans: The Long Journey Home, 20% of new recruits are female, along with 14.5% of the active duty component and 18% of the reserve components. Close to 200,000 women have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet recent reports indicate that the VA drastically underserves our female veterans. Female veterans, like all veterans, deserve access to quality healthcare, said Congresswoman Titus, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs. Unfortunately, recent reports have highlighted chronic problems that are compromising this care, including a lack of womens health providers, problems with the coordination of care, and inappropriate treatment. With the percentage of women veterans seeking care from the VA likely to increase, it is imperative that the VA modernize its services to adapt to the unique needs of our nations female heroes. I look forward to receiving the results of the Inspector General's review, and working with my colleagues on the committee to ensure our female veterans receive the care and support they earned through their service to our country." With each year, the number of female veterans returning home increases, said Congressman Ryan Costello. As a result, we need to honor our commitment to them and ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs is able to provide them with the appropriate care they deserve. The Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act permits the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to authorize construction of a nuclear waste repository only if the Secretary of Energy has secured written consent from the governor of the host state, affected units of local government, and affected Indian tribes. No other state or community would stand for the kind of political targeting that we have faced since passage of the Screw Nevada Act, said Rep. Dina Titus. For far too long, supporters of the proposed Yucca Mountain repository have ignored the concerns of Nevada and its local communities. In doing so, they have relied on bad politics, not sound science, thus creating a dangerous boondoggle. This bipartisan, commonsense bill ensures that our voices are heard and respected when it comes to our states future. "The people of Nevada deserve to have a seat at the table in the nuclear waste storage conversation," Rep. Joe Heck said. "Allowing the governor, local government units, and Indian tribes to review proposals and make a determination on the project is consistent with the Blue Ribbon Commission on Americas Nuclear Future recommendations and, more importantly, will ensure the safety of Nevada's citizens and our environment. I'm pleased to join with members of the delegation on this bill and look forward to moving it forward in a bipartisan, bicameral process." The Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act is consistent with recommendations made by the Blue Ribbon Commission on Americas Nuclear Future, stating that: We believe a good gauge of consent would be the willingness of affected units of governmentthe host states, tribes, and local communities to enter into legally binding agreements with the facility operator, where these agreements enable states, tribes, and communities to … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-reintroduces-sports-bets-collection-tax-correction-act Titus Reintroduces Sports Bets Collection Tax Correction Act 2015-02-27 2015 2015-02 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy February 27, 2015 Washington, D.C. - Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District introduced H.R. 1108, the Sports Bets Collection Tax Correction Act, and urged Chairman Paul Ryan and Ranking Member Sander Levin of the House Committee on Ways and Means to include this legislation as the committee begins work on tax reform. This legislation repeals a decades old federal handle tax on sports wagers. Originally intended as a source of revenue to pursue illegal sports betting, revenue from the handle tax is now used for other purposes. As the only state with fully inclusive wagering on sports, the handle tax places an undue burden on Nevada companies. Titus legislation would save Nevada companies an estimated $9 -$11 million in taxes every year. A copy of the letter can be read here: February 27, 2015 Dear Chairman Ryan and Ranking Member Levin, As you begin your work to reform the tax code in the 114th Congress, I respectfully ask that you consider including legislation that I introduced in the 113th Congress and reintroduced today. The Sports Bets Collection Tax Correction Act (H.R. 5383 in the 113th Congress, H.R. 1108 in the 114th Congress) repeals a decades old tax policy that is outdated and in need of reexamination. When originally imposed, this tax was designed to provide funding for the IRS to investigate illegal wagering operations by imposing a one-time levy on legal wager collection entities, as well as a levy based on the total amount of each wager collected by legal sports books. When I contacted the IRS for additional information, they were unable to confirm that the funding is being used for investigations or in any way related to gaming. Because Nevada is the single state with fully inclusive wagering on sports, companies based in our state are the only entities paying this specific tax. Based on discussions with these companies, it is estimated that they pay between $9.5 and 11 million per year. While this is a minuscule percentage of the federal budget, retaining these funds in Nevada … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District today spoke on the House Floor to call on her Republican colleagues to pass legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS will run out of funding and be forced to shut down on February 27th unless Congress passes legislation authorizing continued funding. Below are her remarks: The day after the election, Speaker Boehner and Senator McConnell outlined an agenda for the so-called New American Congress, pledging to focus on the people's priorities. Well, they have obviously failed to deliver on this promise, instead allowing anti-immigrant, right-wing radicals to trump the safety of American families. Recent events around the world provide a stark reminder of the threats we face. Yet amid the rising risk of terrorist attack, Republicans are holding critical Homeland Security funding hostage in a misguided attempted to undermine and roll back key protections for immigrant families. To quote the Washington Post, the fervor of Republican partisanship is immune to logic beyond an insistence on victory at any cost. In this case, the cost is some 1,500 DHS personnel in Nevada who would be furloughed or forced to work without pay, and nearly $10 million dollars in grant funding that Nevada counts on to protect the safety of our citizens and the over 40 million visitors who come to Las Vegas every year. Only two days remain until DHS shuts down. I call on my Republican colleagues: Stop holding our national security hostage and lets get to work. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevadas First District today spoke on the House Floor to oppose Nevada Attorney General Laxalts recent decision to join two dozen states in a lawsuit challenging the Presidents Executive Action on Immigration. Below are her remarks: Just this morning, Nevada Attorney General Laxalt testified before the House Judiciary Committee claiming that the implementation of DAPA and extension of DACA would cause undue economic hardship for our state. Well, I'd like to see his evidence, because data show that granting administrative relief to qualified undocumented immigrants would actually contribute to economic growth. Thanks to these Executive Actions, the legal workforce will expand and average wages for all workers will increase by $170 a year; the Federal deficit will be reduced by $25 billion; and GDP will grow from $90 billion to $210 billion over the next decade. Furthermore, it is estimated that DAPA and DACA will increase Nevadas GDP from $700 million to $1.7 billion over the next ten years and lead to $21 million in additional tax revenues for the State over the next five years. In short, General, not implementing the Presidents actions is not only morally indefensible but also economically foolish. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The full text of the letter can be found here: February 25, 2015 Dear Attorney General Laxalt, I write regarding your testimony at the House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary on February 25, 2015, about the lawsuit filed by 26 states challenging the Presidents Executive Action on Immigration. I am concerned that you signed the State of Nevada onto a frivolous lawsuit that has legal standing based on the claim that the Presidents Executive Action on Immigration would create economic hardship on the states involved. In your written testimony, you state that the states cannot protect themselves from the costs inflicted by the [Federal] Government when 4.3 million individuals are granted legal presence. Please provide specific evidence that demonstrates the costs that Nevada would incur if DAPA and expanded DACA were implemented to cover undocumented immigrants in our state. Data show granting administrative relief to qualified undocumented immigrants would actually help decrease the Federal deficit and increase U.S. GDP. If granted, the stay will allow the federal government to move forward and begin accepting applications for expanded DACA and DAPA. Titus is an original co-sponsor of a Congressional Resolution recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year). The celebration of Chinese New Year dates back over 4,000 years, and it continues to be a worldwide event thanks to the Asian diaspora. “From the arrival of the first Chinese immigrants in the 1850s to James Chen’s opening of the Chinatown Plaza in 1995 until today, Chinese Americans have played an integral role in our city’s cultural, social, and economic development. In fact, the New York Times listed Las Vegas as one of the 10 best Chinatowns in the United States. “This Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the Year of the Sheep. According to Chinese tradition, individuals born in the Year of the Sheep are said to be tolerant, peace-loving, and kind. So in that spirit, we must recognize how much we all benefit from enacting immigration reform that honors our city’s history and our country's legacy as the ‘land of opportunity.’ I look forward to joining you for New Year’s celebrations at Chinatown Plaza and at the Linq to enjoy good food, music, dance, and shopping. “Gong Hei Fat Choi!” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Below are her remarks: “Hello, I’m Dina Titus, your Congresswoman from the First District of Nevada. “This February, I hope you will join me in celebrating Black History Month by attending various events throughout the Las Vegas Valley which help recount this important aspect of the American story. “Let us also be sure to remember that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act.  By prohibiting barriers to political participation and outlawing efforts to suppress the right of minorities to vote, this landmark legislation ensures that all eligible Americans have equal and fair access to the ballot box. “It was a sad day in our country however when the U.S. Supreme Court last year rolled back voter protections in states with a history of voter discrimination. Since the decision last summer, seven states have enacted controversial laws that severely impact the voting power of seniors, young people, and minorities. “That's why I joined a bipartisan group in Congress in sponsoring the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014, led by Civil Rights hero, Rep. We should not be making it more difficult for Americans to exercise the right to vote. Instead, we should be doing everything we can to improve access and increase participation in the democratic process. “Let us stand proudly on the shoulders of such great Civil Rights heroes as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rep. When a servicemember is discharged from the military, he/she leaves under honorable, general, other than honorable, or dishonorable conditions. Those who are discharged under honorable and general conditions generally have access to the veterans’ benefits they have earned, whereas the other two discharge statuses can bar access to benefits.  “Many of these veterans may be suffering from mental illness caused by their service to their country, and access to mental care can be a life or death situation,” said the Congresswoman.  DOD recently issued new official guidance in September 2014 to the Boards for Correction of Military/Naval Records (BCMNR) asking them to fully and carefully consider any petition to change an individual’s discharge status when based on PTSD.  Ranking Member Titus voiced concern that other than honorable discharges could stigmatize servicemembers for decades by placing information regarding their health on their DD-214.  “While taking care of mental and physical health of veterans is the responsibility of the VA, private medical information should not be on the DD-214,” Rep. Titus said.   She suggested she would be urging the Department of Defense to take further common sense steps that would increase consistency across the services and ensure passionate and measured review of upgrade requests. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I had the opportunity to hear directly from Susan and Richard Selke, the parents of Clay Hunt, during a hearing last year. Their message was a powerful call to action. Today, we see those efforts continue to move forward with the signing of this bill into law.” A recent study done by the state of Nevada found that veterans in the Silver State commit suicide at a rate more than two and a half times higher than that of non-veterans and quadruple the national rate. The study further reported that Nevada’s female veterans commit suicide at more than triple the overall rate for females statewide and nearly six times the national rate for females.  The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act will take a multi-faceted approach to improve mental health services for veterans.  Most notably, the bill will establish a peer support and community outreach pilot program to assist transitioning servicemembers with accessing VA mental health care services. It will also offer a student loan repayment pilot program aimed at recruiting and retaining psychiatrists to help address the shortage of mental health care professionals in the VA.   “Just as the military pledges to leave no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must promise that when our heroes return home, we will not abandon them,” emphasized Titus.  Veterans who are struggling with thoughts of suicide, or friends and family members of veterans who need help can call the VA operated confidential support center, whi… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Below are her remarks: “Mr. Speaker, I rise with a heavy heart to mourn the loss and honor the life of my friend, Coach Jerry Tarkanian who passed away this morning. “A leader and role model, both on and off the court, The Shark was not only a legendary collegiate men’s basketball coach, but a pillar in the Las Vegas community. “As coach at UNLV, he led the Running Rebels to a 509-105 record over 19 seasons, four Final Four appearances, and a NCAA championship in 1990. In 2013, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame; and a statue of him was placed outside UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center which is home of the basketball court bearing his name. “Coach Tarkanian was known for giving young players a second chance. He supported numerous charities and programs that helped build character, life skills, and talents that fostered success in later life. “My thoughts go out to his wife Lois and his family, and I am sure the Coach is now chewing on that famous towel up in heaven. “I yield back.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Without Congressional action, the Department of Homeland Security will run out of funding at the end of the month which will trigger a partial government shutdown. House Republicans, however, refuse to pass legislation to fund the DHS unless that legislation includes measures that would prevent the implementation of the President’s executive actions to improve our broken immigration system. They want to end both the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) program, which would put thousands of DREAMers, including almost 10,000 young men and women living in Nevada and their families, at risk of deportation.  Today, Congresswoman Titus cosponsored H.R. 861 to fund the Department of Homeland Security through the end of the fiscal year, without the unreasonable amendments included in the House Republican version of the bill.  “House Republicans are playing a dangerous and reckless game of partisan politics with the safety of the American people. They have put their extreme agenda over national security. I am appalled by this war on immigrants being waged by House Republicans. As threats grow daily, both overseas and at home, it is unconscionable for the GOP to continue holding the DHS hostage.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

These trusted traveler programs make travel more enjoyable while allowing TSA to better focus their limited resources. As Members of Congress representing districts with significant travel and tourism industries, we recognize how important these programs are in expediting and encouraging more air travel for both business and pleasure. http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-cook-introduce-bill-to-ensure-effectiveness-of-veterans-programs Titus, Cook Introduce Bill to Ensure Effectiveness of Veterans Programs 2015-02-10 2015 2015-02 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy February 10, 2015 Washington, D.C. – Rep. Paul Cook (R- Apple Valley) and Rep. Dina Titus (D- NV) re-introduced the “Veterans Employment and Training Service Longitudinal Study Act of 2015”, a bill to ensure veterans are receiving effective and successful employment training services.   This bipartisan bill authorizes an independent organization to collect and analyze data on the effectiveness of the Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment Training Service (VETS). The study will focus on veterans who have received intensive services from two programs under VETS, the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) and the Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVER).  Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) specialists provide intensive services to meet the employment needs of disabled veterans and other eligible veterans. Their primary focus is on veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, including homeless veterans and veterans with barriers to employment. Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVER) conduct outreach to employers and focus on increasing and promoting employment of veterans. The study will track the employment status of veterans who have received these services, determine if the program contributed to their employment, monitor the employment retention rate, and determine if the services provided helped them increase their average earnings. A report on the findings will be presented to the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in the House and Senate every year for the next five years. The study’s findings will allow Congress to make improvements to these programs, better serve veterans, and more efficiently spend taxpayer dollars. Cook said, “Congress has a duty to provide our veterans with the best employment services possible. We can’t just authorize these programs and hope they work; we have to follow up and ensure that they are working as they were intended to. The analysis of long-term outcomes is precisely the type of oversight Congress needs to determine the effectivenes… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Nationwide, veterans are waiting almost 1,300 days to have their appeals adjudicated. In Nevada, some 1,400 appeals claims are waiting to be decided. The full text of Titus’ letter to Secretary McDonald is below. “Since joining the Veterans Affairs Committee two years ago, I have been very concerned about the prospect of an appeals backlog. Unfortunately, the VA has failed to implement a comprehensive strategy to address this backlog,” said Titus. “While increasing staffing to address the backlog will not be a silver bullet, it is an important step to ensure veterans’ appeals are evaluated in a more timely fashion.” A copy of Titus’ letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald can be read here: February 5, 2015 Dear Secretary McDonald, Since becoming the Ranking Member of the Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs (DAMA) Subcommittee of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs (HVAC) in 2013, I have been increasingly concerned about a looming backlog of appeals at the Veterans Benefits Administration. In June 2013, the DAMA Subcommittee hosted a hearing at which I warned that we were trading a claims backlog for an appeals backlog.  While the VA and the BVA have increased their output, metrics continue to show that the appeals problem is indeed growing; and veterans in Nevada and across the country are waiting far too long for a VA decision. Nationally, the average length of time to receive a decision on an appeal that went to BVA in FY 2013 was 1,255 days.  In Nevada, there are close to 1,400 appeals waiting to be adjudicated. http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-mckinley-introduce-bill-to-help-student-veterans Titus, McKinley Introduce Bill to Help Student Veterans 2015-02-05 2015 2015-02 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy February 5, 2015 Washington, D.C. — Today Reps. Dina Titus (D-NV) and David B. McKinley (R-WV) re-introduced bipartisan legislation that will help veterans get the education they need to thrive in the modern workforce. H.R. 748, the GI Bill STEM Extension Act, will give students utilizing GI Bill benefits more flexibility to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, math and health fields.  “The transition from war zone to campus is not always an easy one,” said McKinley. “We owe it to men and women who served to do all we can to help them return to civilian life and pursue their dreams.” “As a country, we have a responsibility to help our servicemen and women when they leave the military and return home to civilian life,” said Titus, a Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. “This legislation honors that commitment by providing resources to help veterans pursue higher education and gain the skills and training they need to succeed in STEM careers.” This proposal gives students who utilize the Post-9/11 GI Bill the option to apply for an extra nine months of benefits if they pursue a degree in one of the STEM fields. “Given the appropriate resources, veterans possess the talent and experience to make a huge, positive impact in America’s communities and economy,” said D. Wayne Robinson, President of Student Veterans of America. “We must do everything we can to help veterans capitalize on their experience and pursue careers in advanced fields like STEM.” “This common sense plan will give those who have sacrificed for our freedom the tools to be successful in the 21st Century economy,” added McKinley. “This will not only benefit veterans, but will make America’s economy more competitive as well.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//in-the-news/titus-helps-launch-bill-to-allow-va-patients-doctors-to-discuss-marijuana Titus helps launch bill to allow VA patients, doctors to discuss marijuana 2015-02-04 2015 2015-02 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy February 4, 2015 Nevadans will soon have access to medical marijuana, but veterans could be left out of the mix. Under Nevada law, residents with specific ailments can request a medical marijuana card from their doctor. But veterans who use their government-provided doctor don't have that option. The Department of Veteran Affairs prevents its doctors from approving cannabis as a treatment option. The VA is taking its cue from the federal government, which lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug — as dangerous and addictive as heroin — despite the fact Nevada and 22 other states have legalized marijuana in some form. Rep. Dina Titus, a Las Vegas Democrat, joined eight of her House colleagues Tuesday to introduce a bill that would overturn the VA's prohibition on doctors signing off on pot for patients. "With so many of our brave service members returning from battle with significant injuries and medical needs, we must provide access to the very best care available," she said in a statement of the bipartisan bill. Titus, who sits on the Veterans Affairs committee, has consistently championed protections for the medical marijuana industry. She's supported bills to give legal medical marijuana businesses better access to banking. She's also championed amendments to prohibit the federal government from interfering with the states that have legalized medical marijuana. Nevada voters OK'd the drug for medical use in 2000, but only in 2013 did state lawmakers approve statewide dispensaries and labs. Two years later, dispensaries are finalizing complex details and regulations. Medical marijuana dispensaries in Clark County are expected to open their doors in the next two to three months. Nevada law lists eight specific conditions residents can use medical marijuana for, including cancer and glaucoma. Post-traumatic stress disorder also is covered under the law after a veteran petitioned the state to include it, said Pam Graber, a spokesperson for Nevada's medical marijuana program. Titus and her fellow Democrats first introd… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-abraham-introduce-bills-to-increase-cost-of-living-benefits-for-veterans Titus, Abraham introduce bills to increase cost of living benefits for veterans 2015-02-04 2015 2015-02 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy February 4, 2015 Washington, D.C.– Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-LA., chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, and ranking Democrat Congresswoman Dina Titus, D-NV, announced Wednesday the introduction of two bills that support America’s veterans by providing cost of living adjustments (COLA) to their benefits. The American Heroes COLA Act of 2015 (H.R. 677) would authorize the Secretary of the VA to provide an automatic annual increase to the rates of veterans’ disability compensation, compensation for dependents, clothing allowance, and compensation for surviving spouses and children based on the Consumer Price Index Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Another bill, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2015 (H.R. 675), would provide those cost of living adjustments next year, beginning Dec. 1. “These benefits are instrumental to supporting those who have honorably served our nation. Passing the American Heroes COLA Act would provide our veterans much-needed peace of mind so that they know their benefits will be secure each year. We must demand higher protection of our veterans and their financial security. These bills, which enjoy bipartisan support, ensure our veterans and their families’ needs are met. Rep. Titus and I urge Congress to swiftly pass these bills into law,” Dr. Abraham said. Like Dr. Abraham, Rep. Titus urged the passage of American Heroes COLA Act so that veterans’ benefits are automatically adjusted each year, as Social Security benefits are. Unlike Social Security benefit increases, veterans’ benefit increases currently rely upon Congress to pass legislation authorizing the increase.   "Unlike with Social Security COLA increases, Congress must act each year to provide veterans with the COLA increases they need and deserve. Our nation’s heroes should receive their full compensation payments each year, in a timely fashion, removed from the political vagaries of Capitol Hill. http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-joins-bipartisan-group-to-reintroduce-veterans-equal-access-act Titus Joins Bipartisan Group to Reintroduce Veterans Equal Access Act 2015-02-03 2015 2015-02 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy February 3, 2015   Washington, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District joined eight colleagues to reintroduce H.R. 667, the bipartisan Veterans Equal Access Act, which would make it easier for qualified veterans to access medical marijuana.  Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) specifically prohibits its medical providers from completing forms brought by their veteran patients seeking recommendations or opinions regarding participation in a state medical marijuana program. The Act would overturn this prohibition for veterans who live in the 23 states where medical marijuana is legal, including Nevada. “With so many of our brave servicemembers returning from battle with significant injuries and medical needs, we must provide access to the very best care available. We need to remove the barriers that prohibit our VA medical community from recommending medical cannabis as an option for treatment if that veteran lives in a state where access is legal. That's why I'm proud to cosponsor the Veterans Equal Access Act to provide a much needed update to our antiquated drug laws, allowing veterans access to the full range of treatments, including medical marijuana, available to relieve their suffering,” said Titus. “This is a commonsense measure that ensures that the medical staff at our nation’s VA hospitals and clinics can recommend the best course of treatment available for our retired servicemembers without fear of federal interference.” Approximately 20 percent of the 2.8 million American veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTS and Depression. In addition, a recent study found that of the nearly one million veterans who receive opioids to treat painful conditions, more than half continue to consume chronically or beyond 90 days. Another study found that the death rate from opiate overdoses among VA patients is nearly double the national average. In states where patients can legally access medical marijuana for painful conditions, often as a less addictive a… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Hosted by the office of Congresswoman Titus, the competition is designed to encourage local middle school students to participate in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through the creation, development, and presentation of a software application on the platform of their choice. Students will have the opportunity to interact with local high tech professionals, showcase their technological talents, hone their creativity, and learn valuable skills for the future. “In Congress, I have been a strong supporter of STEM education which broadens an individual’s horizons and opens the door to interesting, well-paid jobs that strengthen our country and our economy. Unfortunately, too few students are choosing to study science, technology, engineering, and math. The House App Challenge gives students in the First District an opportunity to explore their creativity and develop important STEM skills that they can use now, when they are in college, and in their future careers. This competition is also a chance to show students that STEM can be fun,” Congresswoman Titus said.    The winning team will enjoy a private meet-and-greet with a NASA astronaut and their school will hear a special STEM presentation by the NASA astronaut. Middle school students from Nevada’s First Congressional District can sign up at www.titus.house.gov/students-youth/2015-stem-competition. Registration is open from February 1st through April 15th. Additional information on 2015 rules and regulations are also available on the Congresswoman’s website. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This critically important program promotes comprehensive early childhood development for low-income families of Las Vegas. The program serves both expectant mothers and their children with a focus on newborns and toddlers.   “Too many under privileged children start primary school already behind their peers. That’s why it is so important that we increase access to programs like Early Head Start so all children can receive the critical education, health, and nutrition services they need to prepare for school,” said Congresswoman Titus. “I commend the Sunrise Children’s Foundation for its commitment to the babies of Las Vegas. Our children will shape our future, so we in turn must do our best to equip them from an early age to do so. We must continue to invest in high quality programs, such as the Early Head Start Program at the Sunrise Children’s Foundation, not just so we can see improvements in these children today, but so we can see improvement in our nation tomorrow.  I am sure that this grant will allow the Sunrise Children’s Foundation to help many more children in the year to come.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

CSN is the first institution in Nevada to achieve this federal status from the U.S. Department of Education, which will allow the college to apply for Title III and Title IV funds under the Higher Education Act. Titus wrote a letter of support for CSN on the importance of this designation to Southern Nevada.  “Congratulations to the College of Southern Nevada on achieving this important designation,” said Titus. “This milestone accomplishment not only reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to improving access to higher education and enhancing diversity but also to serving our local community. I commend CSN for their hard work and tireless efforts to achieve HSI status, and look forward to continuing our partnership to help all local students succeed.”    A copy of Titus’ letter to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in support of CSN’s waiver application can be read here:   Dear Secretary Duncan,   I write today in support of the College of Southern Nevada’s waiver application to become a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HIS) under Title V of the Higher Education Act.   The College of Southern Nevada (CSN), located in my Congressional District, is the largest and most ethnically diverse higher education institution in Nevada. CSN applied for this designation in December, and meets all Title V HSI requirements except the needy student threshold which increased by 10 percentage points this year over last year. In the base year (2012 – 2013) 42 percent of CSN’s students were eligible for Pell grants, but CSN fell just short of meeting the new 45 percent needy student threshold.   I have reviewed CSN’s waiver application and believe that the college meets three of the six waiver options. President Obama has put forward a budget to grow our economy, strengthen the middle class, and empower future generations by making strategic investments in infrastructure and education, and by reforming the tax-code to better support working families. The budget accomplishes these goals in a fiscally responsible way that will reduce the deficit by $1.8 trillion, end sequestration, close special interest tax loopholes, and invest in comprehensive immigration reform.  “Building on the progress we’ve made, this budget proposal helps ensure that hard working Nevadans share in the benefits of our economic growth while also making our country more competitive in the 21st century global marketplace. I applaud the President for offering an agenda that truly reflects our shared values. I hope my Democratic and Republican colleagues will be able to work together to pass this budget and provide greater economic mobility and security for all Americans.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The reports do not change the fact that efforts to restart the failed Yucca Mountain project are a waste of time and resources. This is a boondoggle of an idea, and I will continue to stand firm in my opposition.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-calls-on-va-to-relocate-reno-ro-to-las-vegas Titus Calls on VA to Relocate Reno RO to Las Vegas 2015-01-28 2015 2015-01 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy January 28, 2015 Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District and Ranking Member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs sent a letter to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald asking him to consider relocating the Veterans Affairs Regional Office from Reno to Las Vegas as the Department begins the process of simplifying its regional organizational structure. Since joining the VA Committee, Titus has focused on improving the Reno Regional Office, which is one of the most underperforming offices in the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) system. “As the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, I am committed to ensuring Southern Nevada Veterans receive the benefits they've earned in a timely manner,” said Titus. “While the Reno RO has seen some improvements, the office continues to be plagued by deficiencies in leadership, poor customer service, and significant turnover of employees. Moving the Regional Office to Las Vegas will help to address many of these ongoing issues and will significantly benefit both veterans in Nevada and the VBA.” The full text of the letter can be found here: January 28, 2015 Dear Secretary McDonald,  I am encouraged that you are taking steps to reorganize and streamline the current disjointed and confusing VA regional organizational structure. As I noted during our meeting on this subject, Nevada is currently split among three VISN’s and Las Vegas shares a VBA regional office with counties in Northern California. As we discussed, simplifying this regional structure will improve services and reduce confusion for veterans. As this process continues, I respectfully request that you consider my earlier appeal to relocate the Reno Regional Office to Las Vegas. As you know, the Reno Regional office is one of the worst performing offices throughout VBA. It has been without a permanent Director for some time, and I am concerned that the current location of the offic… 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//news/floor-statements/titus-condemns-republican-war-on-immigrants Titus Condemns Republican War on Immigrants 2015-01-27 2015 2015-01 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy January 27, 2015 Washington, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District spoke on the House Floor to condemn Nevada’s Attorney General’s decision to join the lawsuit challenging President Obama’s executive action on immigration. Below are her remarks: “Last week, House Republicans voted to eliminate DAPA, a program that would protect nearly 40% of undocumented immigrants, promote family unity, and boost our economy. They also voted to end DACA, which has helped some 630,000 DREAMers, including 10,000 in Nevada, come out of the shadows and pursue the American Dream.  “This Republican attack is not only being waged at the federal level. Yesterday, Nevada's Republican Attorney General joined more than two dozen other states in a lawsuit challenging President Obama’s executive action on immigration, although every president since Eisenhower has used similar executive authority to protect immigrants in our country. “So what then is the real reason for declaring war on immigrants? Could it be that they want to keep a desperate underclass to fill those low-wage, no benefit jobs? Or is it because of some fear that these folks might become citizens and vote them out of office? Regardless of the reason, these modern-day Know Nothings should be ashamed of themselves.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Representative Titus will once again serve on the Subcommittees on Highways and Transit; Aviation; Water Resources and the Environment; and Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Preparedness.  “I am honored to once again serve on these subcommittees that are so critical to Southern Nevada. Transportation and infrastructure are vital to our local economy and these assignments give us a seat at the table for some of the most important legislative issues facing our region. I look forward to using my position to advocate for the needs of Nevada including the development of Interstate 11, continued modernization of our nation’s aviation system, the development of autonomous aerial systems, advancing technologies like driverless vehicles, and protecting the precious water resources that allow Southern Nevada to thrive. I look forward to working with my Nevada colleague, Rep. Cresent Hardy as he joins the Committee.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-applauds-passage-of-legislative-package-combating-human-trafficking Titus Applauds Passage of Legislative Package Combating Human Trafficking 2015-01-27 2015 2015-01 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy January 27, 2015 Washington, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District announced passage of a package of bills aimed at combating human trafficking in the United States and around the world.  “Human trafficking is a growing concern in our community and across the country. Nearly 21 million people worldwide, including 5.5 million children, are reported victims of human trafficking. In recent years we’ve seen an uptick in cases of human trafficking in Nevada with 82 cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline in 2014 and 81 the year before. This modern-day slavery must be eradicated from society,” said Titus. “The bills passed this week are important steps toward ending human trafficking by providing needed resources to law enforcement at the international, state, and local levels so they can help support victims, prosecute criminals, and prevent this heinous crime.” January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The following legislation passed as part of this legislative package: Human Trafficking Prioritization Act, the International Megan’s Law to Prevent Demand for Child Sex Trafficking Act, the Human Trafficking Prevention Act, the Enhancing Services for Runaway and Homeless Victims for Youth Trafficking Act, the Strengthening Child Welfare Response to Trafficking Act, the Human Trafficking Detection Act, Human Trafficking Prevention, Intervention, and Recovery Act, the Stop Exploitation Through Trafficking Act, the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, and the Stop Advertising Victims of Exploitation Act, and a bill to improve the response to victims of child sex trafficking. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The U.S. Senate passed bi-partisan comprehensive immigration reform more than a year and a half ago. House Republicans had 18 months to bring bi-partisan options to the floor for a vote and they refused. Instead they voted to repeal both DACA and DAPA and keep some 40,000 eligible undocumented immigrants living in Southern Nevada from coming out of the shadows and applying for deportation relief.  “In the absence of legislation, President Obama rightly used his authority to protect families, strengthen our community, and boost the economy,” continued Titus. “Every U.S. president since Eisenhower has used executive powers to protect groups of immigrants living in our country. This lawsuit is just another attempt to undermine efforts to fix our broken immigration system; it creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and intimidates eligible immigrants from applying for deportation relief.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-announces-new-legislation-to-combat-va-appeals-backlog Titus Announces New Legislation to Combat VA Appeals Backlog 2015-01-22 2015 2015-01 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy January 22, 2015 Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District and Ranking Member of the Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee of the House Veterans Affairs Committee announced today the introduction of legislation to create a special taskforce to address the backlog of appeals for VA benefits. The VA currently has some 300,000 appeals pending and this backlog is expected to grow. Titus’ legislation will create a special task force to study the current appeals process and make recommendations to the VA, as well as Congress, on ways to improve the appeals process so veterans receive accurate decisions in a timely fashion. “While it is a good thing that the overall backlog of VA claims has been dramatically reduced, this has correspondently led to an overload of the appeals process. Since joining the VA Committee, I have consistently voiced my concerns about this pending problem. Now Nevada has some 1,400 appeals claims waiting to be decided," said Titus. "A taskforce will bring together the brightest minds to address this backlog and make recommendations that will be critical to meeting this challenge head on before it gets worse. Improving the speed and efficiency of both the claims process and the appeals system is the least we can do to recognize and compensate military men and women for their service and sacrifice.” Today the VA Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs held a hearing on “Veterans’ Dilemma: Navigating the Appeals System for Veterans Claims.” Below is a copy of Titus’ opening statement, as prepared for delivery: “Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I want to congratulate you on your recent election to serve Louisiana’s Fifth Congressional District and your selection as chair of this subcommittee. I was fortunate to have had a very productive partnership with former Chairman Runyan, and I hope we can carry on this committee’s long tradition of working in a bipartisan way on behalf of our nation’s heroes.  “I am excited to once again … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Current law restricts the use of federal funding for abortion services, except in the extreme circumstances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. H.R. 7 goes further by restricting women from using private dollars to purchase private insurance for comprehensive health coverage, including reproductive care. “This bill drastically undermines a woman’s constitutional right to choose, and effectively eliminates access to reproductive care for low-income women across the country,” said Titus. “It also hurts small businesses finally starting to recover from the Great Recession by raising taxes on those employers who offer female employees comprehensive health insurance. “Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of understanding about basic women’s healthcare, and this bill is one more example of their continuing attack on a woman’s right to make the best decision for herself, her health, and her family,” continued Titus. “It is nothing more than an attempt by House Republicans to distract from the critical work that needs to be done to create jobs, invest in infrastructure, and strengthen the middle-class. Less than three weeks into the new Congress, and House Republicans have failed to act on any of these economic priorities choosing instead to deport DREAMers, separate families, and attack a woman’s right to choose.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

He spoke out against Republican inaction that has allowed wages to remain stagnant and income inequality to grow, and put forward a plan to level the playing field to help all hardworking Americans get ahead. “I agree with the President that if we don't invest in our future, we won't have much future to invest in - that means commitment to education, infrastructure, and comprehensive immigration reform. “We've got to stop asking the modern day robber barons, ‘How much is enough?’ while telling hungry children, working women, and minimum wage earners, ‘it's not much, but it's enough.’ It's time to get our priorities straight - government is not intended to make a handful of people extremely rich; it's there to build a great nation where all people have an equal chance to prosper. “Let's tonight remember the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, ‘The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.’” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

These cases may very well decide that no loving couple can be denied the right to have their commitment legally recognized and respected by their government regardless of where they live. I am confident, as the Supreme Court has ruled previously, that equality will win out over bigotry. As the Supreme Court moves forward with these cases, I will continue to advocate in Congress for equality and justice for LGBT families.” A member of the House Equality Caucus, sponsor of the Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act, and cosponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, and the Student Non-Discrimination Act, Congresswoman Titus has been a leading advocate for LGBT rights in Congress. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-applauds-plans-to-strengthen-america-s-middle-class-by-ensuring-paid-sick-leave Titus Applauds Plans to Strengthen Americas Middle Class By Ensuring Paid Sick Leave and Expanding Access to Paid Family Leave 2015-01-15 2015 2015-01 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy January 15, 2015 Las Vegas, NV - Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District applauded plans announced by the White House today to strengthen the middle class through a bill that ensures earned paid sick leave and new funding in the budget to help more states to create paid family leave programs. “Today too many working men and women struggle to balance the demands of work and home,” said Titus. “As women and men increasingly share breadwinning and caregiving responsibilities, it is important that our workplace policies evolve to meet the needs of today’s working families.” In 1965, both parents were working outside the home in 40 percent of America’s households with children.  Today, both parents are working outside the home in 60 percent of these households.  Similarly, in the early 1970s, 31 percent of women with children under the age of five were participating in the labor force.  Today, that figure has more than doubled to 63 percent of women with children under the age of five. “Paid leave is an investment that countless other nations have already made in their families, their economies, and their futures,” Titus continued. “Indeed, research shows that family-friendly policies meet the needs of both employers and employees alike. Mothers and fathers have time to care for new babies; adult children are able to take leave to care for a sick parent; and working men and women have the opportunity to address their own serious medical needs without fear of jeopardizing their jobs or their families’ economic security. Paid sick days and paid family leave have also been shown to both reduce turnover and increase productivity – improving employers’ bottom-line and strengthening America’s economy.” Following are some of the plans outlined by the White House today that are strongly supported by Rep. Titus: Pushing Congress to Pass the Healthy Families Act.  The Healthy Families Act, sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro and Sen. Patty Murray, would allow working Americans to earn up to seven days per … 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Yet amid the rising risks of terrorism, Republicans are holding critical Homeland Security funding hostage in order to undermine and roll back key protections for immigrant families. I urge the Senate to pass a clean, bipartisan bill so we can restore certainty to DHS funding and protect the American people.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
http://titus.house.gov//press-releases/titus-statement-on-republican-homeland-security-funding-bill Titus Statement on Republican Homeland Security Funding Bill 2015-01-13 2015 2015-01 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy January 13, 2015 Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District released the following statement regarding House Republicans’ Homeland Security funding bill. The legislative package includes provisions to prevent the implementation of the President’s executive actions to improve the immigration system as well as to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, putting hundreds of thousands of DREAMers, including almost 10,000 young men and women living in Nevada, at risk of deportation. “House Republicans' plan to hold critical Homeland Security funding hostage in order to advance their partisan, anti-immigrant agenda is reckless and irresponsible, especially in light of recent events,” said Titus. “It is clear that Republicans will stop at nothing, including putting Americans at risk, in order to dismantle key protections for immigrant families.” A new report, based on data from the White House Council of Economic Advisors, projects the President’s Immigration Accountability Executive Actions will grow the U.S. economy by $90 billion to $210 billion over the next ten years – which translates into increasing Nevada's GDP by $700 million to $1.7 billion. This economic growth means more revenue to meet Nevada’s needs. The CEA data also show the executive actions will have no impact on the likelihood of employment of U.S. born workers, and would raise average wages for U.S. born workers by $170 a year.  All of these increases would be lost under House Republicans’ radical anti-immigrant Homeland Security bill. "The President's executive actions to improve our immigration system will help to protect families, strengthen communities, and boost our economy," continued Titus. "I urge House Republicans to stop playing partisan games and restore certainty to DHS funding right away.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The action is supported by the National Association of Realtors. “Nowhere was the impact of the housing crisis felt more than in Southern Nevada; and while we’ve made progress in the last six years, we still have a long way to go until we fully recover. I applaud the President for using his authority to advance the housing recovery. His actions will help homeowners stay in their homes and enable millions of families to purchase a home for the first time,” said Titus. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The program expired on December 31, 2014. “Since its enactment, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act has provided certainty to businesses and stability to the markets. TRIA reauthorization is essential for cities like Las Vegas, and especially crucial for our hospitality, travel, and tourism industries,” said Titus. “I’m pleased that the House has made TRIA reauthorization a top priority in the new Congress and urge the Senate to pass this bill without delay.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
