When toxic algal blooms and other threats to our water supply make water unsafe to drink, we must provide assistance to local communities for relief, said Brown. This emergency water line will give thousands in Cadiz needed access to safe drinking water. The Village of Cadizs drinking water source is an above ground reservoir. During this past summer, the reservoirs microcystin levels from a toxic algal bloom made the reservoirs water temporarily unsafe. The ADA was passed into law in 1990 before the Internet as we know it existed, and in advance of the information-technology revolution. Because of this, the law on ICT and its implementing regulations lack sufficient clarity on the question of ICT accessibility. This ambiguity has resulted in individuals with disabilities facing frequent and unacceptable barriers to Internet access and ICT. Far too many entities covered by current ADA regulations are not taking appreciable actions to support ICT accessibility, exploiting the current lack of regulatory clarity, wrote the Senators in the letter to OMB. Without a legislative fix, nearly 10,000 Ohio workers would be ineligible for the same tax benefits on savings plans that workers at United, Delta, Northwest, and U.S. Airways received. Last year, we fixed the law to ensure that American Airlines employees wouldnt lose their retirement savings because of the companys bankruptcy, said Brown. TheWorker, Retiree, and Employer Recovery Act of 2008allowed employees of air service providers, who filed bankruptcy prior to 2007, to roll up to 90 percent of airline bankruptcy settlements into an individual retirement account without paying tax penalties through April 15, 2013. American Airlines did not declare bankruptcy until Nov. 29, 2011, and had not yet emerged from bankruptcy by April 15, 2013. This bill will help ensure that Americas servicemembers dont face the threat of eviction or foreclosure when they return from active duty. The current one-year safeguard from foreclosure will expire at the end of 2015 and revert to the three-month protection that was originally enacted under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). In 2008, Congress first extended the period of foreclosure protection under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) from 90 days to nine months in response to a report by the Commission on the National Guard and Reserves.The report found that the threat of foreclosure is a stressor that need not be placed on members of the armed forces during the first months of their return to civilian life. In December 2014, Congress extended the foreclosure protection until January 2016. Unless Congress acts by the end of this year, the period of foreclosure protection will revert back to just 90 days starting in 2016. Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous synthetic opioid drug that has recently been attributed to an increase of fatal overdoses. The Drug Enforcement Agencys (DEAs) assessment is that fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin. Fentanyl is typically prescribed for pharmaceutical purposes, usually to ease extreme pain for patients in finals stages of diseases like cancer. The drug is similar to morphine but can be up to 100 times more powerful. The Stop Trafficking of Fentanyl Act would reduce the amount of fentanyl needed to invoke the most serious trafficking penalties for an individual trafficking and manufacturing the drug. The bill would lower the threshold that triggers federal penalties from 400 grams to 20 grams to ensure that the law appropriately reflects the extreme strength of the drug, which can be fatal in doses as small as 0.25 mg. The DEA has also issued warnings to law enforcement as fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin and accidental inhalation of airborne powder can also occur. In 2014, Ohio ranked number one in the number of fentanyl seizures correlating directly to an increase in fentanyl-related deaths. Ohio reported 514 fentanyl-related overdoses in 2014 compared to 93 in 2013. Ohio has seen yet another record-breaking year for overdose-related deaths, many due to fentanyl. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today issued the following statement on the announced merger between Pfizer and Allergan, which could give Pfizer the ability to avoid paying U.S. taxes. Huge corporations like Pfizer and Allergan shouldnt get to play by different rules than everyone else. Companies should have to settle up on their taxes before shifting their headquarters oversees. This merger is further proof that we must work toward international tax reform that addresses inversions and fixes our broken, corporate tax code. That means establishing a country-by-country global minimum tax. Brown, a member of the Senate Finance Committee and ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, has repeatedly urged Congress to address inversions and take immediate action to address the broken corporate tax code. He was a member of the Finance Committees bipartisan International Tax Reform Working Group, and continues to negotiate a plan to reform our international tax system while generating funds for long-term infrastructure improvements. Brown was also a cosponsor of the Pay What You Owe Before You Go Act in 2014. Brown pressed regulators to resist calls from Wall Street banks to weaken the rules, which are critical to preventing another crisis and shielding taxpayers from another bailout of the financial system. In a letter to the Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), Brown stressed the importance of the enhanced supplementary leverage ratio (SLR) for the largest financial institutions and the margin rules for derivatives transactions. Both of these rules are required by the Wall Street Reform Act. I write out of concern with the arguments made by large Wall Street banks and their allies that these rules particularly the treatment of margin for cleared derivatives and rules governing trades among affiliates should be watered down.
