On Wednesday several of my staff members attended the girls' basketball tournament at Excel Academy to present the school with a flag flown over the Pentagon on Veterans Day of this year. SJCOE Superintendent Mick Founts dedicated the flag and one of my staffers led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. I hope that the flag will inspire their young athletes for years to come. This flag, which SJCOE framed and had placed in glass on their gymnasium wall, was flown above the U.S. Pentagon on 11/11/13. Last night I participated in a discussion about immigration reform with the City Ministry Network in Modesto. I believe our immigration system is broken and needs real and effective reform, and I am committed to working across the aisle to find a bipartisan American solution to solve this problem for the next generation. The Democrats insisted on funding the government according to existing law. The Republicans sought one simple change: that the individual insurance mandate under Obamacare be delayed for one year. They were trying to spare the American people the Obamacare disaster that is now unfolding, but to no avail. The American people sided overwhelmingly with the Democrats on the principle that the government should be funded according to current law without any side issues. Why wasn’t that principle applied just two months later? Republicans were in the ideal position to hold the budget line simply by insisting on enforcing current law. Instead, the House Republican leadership pushed through a two-year budget that will allow the federal government to spend an additional $63 billion more than current law allows – money that our country does not have. Some of the discussion has focused on how much of the spending spree will be paid with higher taxes. The answer is, “all of it.” Once government spends a dollar, it has already decided to tax that dollar – the only questions that remain are who gets the bill and when. Sixty-three billion dollars of new spending – and therefore new taxes in some form – is not a small amount of money. It averages about $570 of added burdens for every family in America. Not so, say supporters. Over the next ten years, fee increases and spending reforms will pay for all of this, with $22 billion to spare for debt reduction. The claim is a practical application of the economic principles of J. North Korea is emboldened and more defiant, and the world is no safer from North Korean aggression than it was decades ago. To think of Iran any differently is foolish. Where North Korea is constrained, Iran fills the same void through growing capability, regional influence and alliances. The deal reached by the Obama administration will need to be thoroughly examined to understand its full scope, but the preliminary details are cause for alarm. Bottom line: The deal provides no real assurance that Iran will stop pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran's centrifuges will still spin by the thousands, while its belief that enrichment is an inalienable right has gone undeterred. A deal that involved Iran's centrifuges would have surely instilled more confidence, not just by observers in the U.S., but elsewhere, including Israel. Without centrifuges at the center of the deal, there is little real reason to celebrate what could be a toothless agreement built on false hope that Iran is serious and has divorced itself from its recent past. It is because of Iran that improvised explosive devices were such a threat during the Iraq War. Iran's involvement in Afghanistan is no less a problem. Meanwhile, in Syria, Iran is supporting the Assad regime against rebel forces. Funding and material support from Iran to terrorist organizations also continues. These actions underscore why any deal with Iran must be met with caution and skepticism. Unfortunately, sometimes unscrupulous individuals seek to take advantage of veterans’ initiatives. Earlier this year, my Committee – the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee – learned of a flaw in the current system that allowed a contractor to secure a “service-disabled veteran” designation and, as a result, receive millions in government awards, despite never having served one day in the military. While attending a military preparatory school, Braulio Castillo injured his ankle and, shortly after went on to play quarterback and linebacker at a civilian college. Twenty-seven years later, Castillo applied for service-disabled veteran status – conveniently, just months before he started his business and sought out lucrative federal contracts worth over $500 million. Despite never serving a day in the military, Castillo secured this designation for contracting purposes. Those who have never actually served our country should not be entitled to receive the special status of service-disabled veteran in order to secure advantages in receiving contracts. This loophole must be closed so that future service-disabled veteran businesses can fairly compete for government contracts. That’s why I have worked with fellow Congresswoman – and disabled veteran – Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) to introduce the SERV (Support Earned Recognition for Veterans) Act. This bill will prevent future abuses of the veterans-preference contract system so that those whom never served in the actual armed forces will not be eligible for this status.
