The team developed an application called “BiteSense,” using Python as their programming language. BiteSense photographs insect bites and uses AI to identify and provide treatment advice for the bite. “My office has been proud to host the Congressional App Challenge for the past 9 years to encourage students in the 16th Congressional District to pursue their passion in STEM fields,” said Rep. LaHood. “Each year, I have been amazed by the talent of our students and the creativity of the applications they put together to solve real-world problems. Congratulations to Saaketh, Sohum, Abhilash, and Sonit, and thank you to all the students who participated this year!” The winning group will receive an invitation to demonstrate their application in Washington, D.C., have their application featured on the House of Representatives website, www.house.gov, and receive a copyright fee waiver provided through the Arts Act. A video link to the winning group’s application can be found here. The Congressional App Challenge is an annual competition hosted by the U.S. House of Representatives aimed at encouraging students to pursue careers in STEM fields. Since its inception in 2015, the Challenge has grown to become the largest student computer science competition in the United States, with the 2024 Congressional App Challenge setting multiple records. This year’s CAC included the participation of 12,682 students and a total of 3,881 original applications submitted from districts across the United States. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

Today, the United States is the only major country that uses citizenship-based taxation, a system that levies taxes on individuals regardless of where they live or whether they earn income in the United States. This bill would permit Americans living overseas to elect to be treated as a non-resident American, allowing them to be subject to U.S. tax only on U.S.-sourced income and gains. According to recent estimates, more than 5 million U.S. citizens are currently living abroad. This group includes both Americans that were born and raised in the United States but have since moved abroad indefinitely, as well as “accidental Americans,” or individuals who hold dual citizenship in the United States and a foreign country but are unaware of their status as U.S. citizens. This issue has received more attention in recent years and was a priority for President-elect Trump during the campaign trail earlier this fall. In an exclusive with The Wall Street Journal in October, President Trump stated, “I support ending the double taxation of overseas Americans.” “This is a non-partisan issue that impacts U.S. citizens with roots in districts across the country. In today’s world, Americans choose to live and work abroad for a host of reasons, and that does not mean that they should be subject to more onerous tax and compliance burdens,” said Rep. LaHood. “I look forward to working with President-elect Trump and my House colleagues on both sides of the aisle to modernize our tax code to ensure Americans are not punished for living and working abroad.” “For the first time in our lifetimes, Americans abroad can see the light at the end of the long, dark tunnel that has cost them huge amounts in accounting fees, ruined relationships, and made it im… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T19:07:19Z

Under this legislation, the Department of the Treasury will now mint coins in commemoration of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at no cost to taxpayers. All proceeds from this process will support soccer programs in the United States, specifically aiding youth programs and programs for underserved communities. "I was thrilled to see the FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coin Act signed into law,” said Rep. LaHood. "This legislation will commemorate the largest comprehensive sporting event in our nation’s history, while also supporting youth engagement and elevating soccer – which remains the fastest growing sport - throughout the United States. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on the bipartisan Soccer Caucus to ensure the success of the 2026 World Cup.” “Soccer brings people together, and in 2026, the U.S., Canada and Mexico will host the world’s largest sporting event - the FIFA World Cup,” said Rep. Castor. “I’m thrilled that the bipartisan Soccer Caucus is marking this momentous occasion while raising money to support youth soccer initiatives. We also are ramping up our work with host communities to ensure a safe and memorable 2026 World Cup.” "I am happy to see H.R.7438, FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coin Act was signed into law by President Biden," said Rep. Bacon. "As co-chair of the Congressional Soccer Caucus, I look forward to the United States hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in 11 cities and its impact on soccer in communities across our nation and our nation's youth." “The FIFA Men’s World Cup is coming to Puget Sound and Seattle in 2026, and a commemorative coin is a great way to celebrate the beautiful game in the Pacific Northwest while supporting youth soccer and underserved communities," said Rep. Included in this reckless act, President Biden commuted the sentence of Rita Crundwell, the disgraced and corrupt former Dixon Comptroller, who stole $54 million of taxpayer money from the city. While many families in Dixon were living paycheck to paycheck, she took advantage of their trust in government and used her access to live an unearned life of luxury, in what the FBI still believes to be the largest theft of public funds in U.S. history. Carper Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024, which provides critical support for flood protection, locks, dams, and waterways in Illinois. Multiple provisions submitted by Congressman LaHood to strengthen Illinois’ waterway infrastructure, boost economic opportunity, and mitigate flood risks were included in the final version of the legislation, which has now passed both chambers and will head to the President’s desk to be signed into law. “In Illinois’ 16th District, our communities rely on water infrastructure resources for economic development, trade facilitation, and protection from natural disasters,” said Congressman LaHood. “I was proud to support this legislation, which will work to limit the damage caused by flooding and help impacted communities recover. This year’s version of the WRDA bill is also critical to ensuring our farmers and businesses have updated transportation infrastructure, providing easier and more efficient access to markets across the globe.” Provisions submitted by Congressman LaHood include: Authorizing the Upper Mississippi River System Flood Risk and Resiliency Study, which allows the planning authority to develop strategic and durable approaches to preparation and response for flood risk in the Upper Mississippi River System floodplain. Adjusting the cost share requirement from 65/35 percent to 75/25 percent for the Inland Waterways Trust Fund, which would assist in expediting the completion of authorized navigation projects on inland waterways and strengthen America’s supply chain. Other sections of WRDA benefit Illinois by allocating funds to improve existing water and wastewater infrastructure and increasing support for restoration projects, including the Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program, which Congressman LaHood has championed in previous federal funding cycles. In a letter to FWS Director Martha Williams, Bost challenged the agency’s lack of transparency and backtracking on previous pledges to maintain public access to the lake during structural repairs. "People are furious at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and they have every right to be,” said Bost. “We were promised continued access to Little Grassy Lake for recreational activities – even as water levels were reduced for structural repairs – and that nothing would change without constructive communication with the public. As far as I’m concerned, those promises were broken. Like many Southern Illinoisans, I grew up on this lake; it’s been a vital part of our community for generations. I’ll fight to get the answers we deserve and make clear to the D.C. bureaucrats how much this lake means to the people of Southern Illinois." Little Grassy Lake, located in the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, has been a hub for recreation, outdoor education, and economic activity for 77 years. After previously indicating that repairs to the lake’s dam could be made without completely draining it, FWS reversed course in a press release posted to its website last week, a decision that will shut down public access for up to seven years. Bost will be meeting with Director Williams in his Washington, D.C., office on Thursday to share his concerns directly. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T22:13:55Z

The failure to adhere to the Lebanese constitution and hold an open and fair parliamentary session to elect a president clearly benefited Hezbollah and the Iranian regime that calls the shots from the shadows and harms the Lebanese people. LaHood and Issa urged the Administration take a revitalized policy approach toward Lebanon, including renewed diplomatic efforts and effective targeted support through USAID and to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). In the letter, LaHood and Issa write in part: Since October 7, 2023, we have watched Isarel fight against Iranian terror proxies Hamas and Hezbollah, including increasingly significant engagement on the southern border of Lebanon. Hezbollah is today dramatically weakened through the targeting of Hezbollah militants and leadership. As Hezbollah’s grip on Lebanon weakens, and it continues to lose leaders, foot soldiers, infrastructure, financing, and influence, we believe the United States should move forward with direct pressure of Speaker Nabih Berri, Lebanon’s Parliament, and other political leaders to act quickly and hold immediate elections for president. Any continued delay by the Speaker of the Parliament – or others – to obstruct the constitution and hold an open and fair parliamentary session to elect a president is unacceptable. As we remember the over 1,200 lives lost, we continue to pray for the hostages that remain in Hamas hands, including Americans. In the wake of this devastation, Jewish Americans and Jews around the world have been the target of vile and unacceptable acts of antisemitism. The United States has an obligation to continue our support for Israel's right to self defense and protect our troops in the Middle East from those who seek to harm us. "For years, Nasrallah and Hezbollah, an Iranian terrorist proxy, have sought to sow divide in Lebanon and the Middle East, disrupting ongoing efforts for peace in the region. In the years since the Beirut port blast, Hezbollah has obstructed the democratic process in Lebanon, prevented the formation of a government and election of an independent president, and blocked humanitarian assistance to the Lebanese people. Mike Bost (IL-12) voted this evening against a short-term spending compromise that funds the government through December 20th while stripping out a provision requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote. Bost voted last week for a package that would have funded government until March 20th of next year while implementing SAVE Act reforms to require proof of citizenship to register to vote. "There are two urgent priorities facing Congress right now: funding the government and securing the election. That’s why I was proud to vote last week for a bill that helped accomplish both goals. Unfortunately, it was defeated when nearly all House Democrats opposed a provision requiring a proof of citizenship to register to vote. How you could oppose ensuring the integrity of what may be the closest presidential race in modern history is beyond me. That’s why I voted against the bill when it was brought back to the House floor with the election protections stripped away. We’re facing what may be the closest presidential election in modern history, and I couldn’t justify voting for a bill that’s half as good and funds government for half as long as the one we brought to the floor last week. Southern Illinoisans deserve to have confidence that our elections are secure and that their vote won’t be cancelled out by someone casting a ballot illegally.” The SAVE Act amends existing law to mandate in-person verification of citizenship when registering to vote at DMVs, voter registration agencies, or by mail. Additionally, the bill requires states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls, provides states access to federal databases to verify citizenship, and allows citizens to sue election officials who fail to enforce these requirements. The SAVE Act passed the House with bipartisan support as a standalone bill this summer. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

Mike Bost (IL-12) today introduced the Upending Secret Postal Shutdowns (USPS) Act to prohibit the U.S. Postal Service from shutting down a post office under the guise of an "emergency suspension" without first notifying impacted communities and providing a full justification for the closure. Under current law, postal operations can be suspended due to emergencies ranging from staffing shortages to natural disasters, with a loose expectation that service be restored within 280 days. Bost’s bill would set strict periodic deadlines for public notifications, require community input, and mandate annual reports to Congress on long-term postal shutdowns. “Communities rely on the Postal Service for the timely delivery of letters, prescriptions, bills, and other mail,” said Bost. “When a post office closes, especially in a rural area, it hurts the people who depend on it most. My legislation will help clear up the confusion and uncertainty that comes with a postal closure by improving transparency and setting aggressive timelines for communicating with the public about when service will be restored. This is an issue I hear a lot about from my constituents; we can’t rest until we improve postal services in Southern Illinois and across the United States.” Bost reported that his congressional office has received over 250 complaints over the last two years from constituents in nearly every county of his district regarding post office closures and delays. He recently visited USPS’s regional distribution center in St. Louis and met with postal officials in Washington, D.C., to share his constituents concerns and urge an immediate resolution. Mike Bost (IL-12) voted Wednesday evening for a federal spending package to fund the government through March of next year and require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Due to overwhelming Democrat opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act reforms, the bill failed to pass the House. Congress must approve legislation funding the government by September 30th or risk lapses in essential services. “Congress has two urgent priorities before the end of September: funding the government and ensuring only legal ballots from U.S. citizens are cast in the election. We must accomplish both objectives but have little time to do so. That’s why I supported linking passage of the Continuing Resolution with the SAVE Act. Sadly, House Democrats – some of whom voted for the SAVE Act earlier this year – stood in near unanimous opposition to the plan, killing both bills just 12 days before a shutdown. Rest assured, I will not back down in the fight to ensure Southern Illinoisans have access to essential government services and the comfort of knowing we’ve protected the integrity of the most important election of our lifetimes.” Congressional leaders are expected to resume efforts this week to end the spending impasse before the end of the month. ### 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T21:43:57Z

The op-ed can be read HERE or below. Originally published in the Pantagraph: Congress must pass the SAVE Act to help secure our elections By U.S. Representative Darin LaHood Like many Americans, my ancestors immigrated to the United States to forge a better life for themselves and their families. They worked hard and followed the rules to legally immigrate to this country and become citizens. One of the most important rights afforded to American citizens is the right to vote. The right to vote is inherent to our ability to choose our leaders and put a check on those in power. It’s a right that’s been fought for since the founding of our country, and we must protect and secure the sanctity of the vote. Unfortunately, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ reckless open border policies have allowed millions of illegal immigrants to enter our country. Their failure to enforce our laws at the border has led to the endangerment of our communities, our families and our democracy. In Illinois, where sanctuary city policies are championed by Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, hundreds of thousands of migrants have been moved throughout the state, costing the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. As the unmitigated crisis at our southern border continues, constituents in the 16th Congressional District have raised concerns about election integrity throughout the country. To help restore faith in our federal elections, I supported the recently House-passed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The SAVE Act is a commonsense policy that would strengthen our current election laws by requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. In a letter to VA Secretary Denis McDonough, Bost and Wagner emphasized the urgent need to fund the replacement of the hospital's aging bed tower and modernize clinical services to ensure veterans from across Missouri and Southern Illinois receive the high-quality care they have earned. The letter, also signed by U.S. Reps. "For far too long, St. Louis and Metro East Illinois veterans served by the John A. Cochran VA Hospital have been waiting for improved medical facilities," said Bost. "The VA has recognized for well over a decade that the hospital’s bed tower needs to be replaced and its clinical services need to be modernized. This project must be funded as a top priority – and it needs to happen now. As chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I will continue working with Rep. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) awards annual Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) grants to states and territories providing individual reemployment services for Unemployment Insurance (UI) claimants. Reemployment services give workers who might otherwise struggle to find new jobs the tools that they need to get back to work and reduce the number of weeks that UI claimants receive unemployment benefits. The bills will reverse a harmful budget gimmick in Democrats' American Rescue Plan that targeted gig economy workers and strengthen investments in nonprofits seeking to provide scholarships to students in elementary and secondary schools. "Under Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and JB Pritzker, burdensome taxes and regulations have been levied on workers and small businesses and school choice has been diminished in Illinois," said Rep. LaHood. "The Saving Gig Economy Taxpayers Act and the Educational Choice for Children Act of 2024 will ensure that workers aren't unfairly targeted by the IRS as they try to make ends meet and give students the chance to fulfill their potential in the classroom. As families navigate high inflation and the negative impact of COVID lockdowns on learning, I applaud the Ways and Means Committee for advancing legislation to address everyday challenges our communities face in Illinois." Background: H.R. 190, the Saving Gig Economy Taxpayers Act, would repeal burdensome tax hikes in Democrats' American Rescue Plan that lowered the 1099-K reporting requirement for taxpayers and independent contractors who use payment platforms like Venmo to $600, and return the threshold to $20,000 and 200 separate transactions. H.R. 9462, the Educational Choice for Children Act of 2024, would incentivize investments in non-profit organizations that provide scholarships to elementary and secondary students, providing more options to parents looking to give their kids a quality education. Representative Miller released the following statement: “Joe Biden is undermining years of progress women have made in securing their rights under Title IX. For more than half a century, Title IX has protected women and girls, ensuring they have equal opportunities in education. However, the Biden Administration is putting our girls at risk by allowing men to access women and girls' bathrooms and locker rooms. This divergence is a blatant violation of the protections Title IX was meant to guarantee, and it undermines the very foundation of women's rights and security in their private spaces." “The Biden administration’s final rule hacks Title IX into pieces and expunges decades of progress for women and girls across the nation. This is a clear and present threat, and one that cannot go unaddressed. Vice Chair Miller’s resolution under the Congressional Review Act to stamp out the Biden administration’s radical Title IX rule is a much-needed prescription to safeguard opportunities for women and girls – and I am proud to support it.” - Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) “I’m proud to support Representative Mary Miller’s legislation to block the Biden Administration’s radical efforts to roll back women’s rights and undo President Trump’s policies that ensure every American receives due process under the law.” - Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) “I am proud to stand with Congresswoman Mary Miller on her joint resolution—Joe Biden’s DOE does not get to decide what being a girl or woman means,” said Congresswoman Luna. “As society drifts into the chaos of postmodernism, it is crucial that we, as legislators, stay firm and protect the rights of young women across America. Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) released the following statement: "Joe Biden's 'Open Borders' plan would allow 2,500 illegal aliens to cross into our country per day, when that number should be zero. Joe Biden is lying when he claims he wants to secure the border because his plan would continue to allow 1 million illegal aliens to walk into our country and receive mass amnesty and welfare benefits paid by U.S. taxpayers. "The Biden Border Invasion is overwhelming our schools, our hospitals, and our local police departments. Today, we had an Education Committee hearing about schools failing to teach American students because they are spending so much time and money on translators for foreign national students who have no legal right to be here. "Biden also LIED about how the cartels operate, claiming his actions will stop the cartels when he is actually completing the final leg of the cartels' human trafficking operation by using taxpayer dollars to fly and transport illegal aliens to their final destination. Retreading is a manufacturing process that replaces the tread on worn tires to help extend the life of the tire. “As Illinois residents continue to face challenges related to inflation and the high cost of goods, this commonsense, bipartisan bill will incentivize the purchase of American-made tires and create jobs in communities across the country,” said Rep. LaHood. “This bill makes an important investment in our manufacturing sector in Illinois, ensuring we keep jobs at home. I look forward to working with Congresswoman Sykes and my Ways and Means Committee colleagues to strengthen economic opportunities throughout the Midwest and America.” “The Retreaded Truck Tire Jobs, Supply Chain Security and Sustainability Act will encourage consumers to purchase high-quality American tires while putting more money back into their pockets,” said Rep. We thank them for their brave service. Our police officers play an essential role in our community—working to keep us safe, upholding the rule of law, and responding to emergencies. Illinois is home to many upstanding, honorable, courageous, and self-sacrificing police officers, including Peoria’s Police Chief Eric Echevarria and Durand Police Chief Michael Reiman. Mr. Speaker, we also take this time to mourn the loss of our fallen officers whose lives were lost in the line of duty. On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 61 hours. We must never forget their sacrifice. Lastly, I want to thank the law enforcement support network—their families, parents, wives, husbands, and children for the sacrifices they make when their loved ones serve as police officers. Representative Miller made the following statement: “The Biden administration’s continued regulatory encroachment in the workplace bogs down American employers with more red tape and hinders the advancement of free enterprise in our country. Joe Biden’s government wants to control every aspect of American taxpayers’ lives, including in the workplace. Funding the Ukraine proxy war should not take priority over protecting American citizens from the terrorists, murderers, and fentanyl crossing our border. This forward-looking legislation brings the GSP into the 21st Century economy by promoting economic growth around the world and preventing the proliferation of restrictive digital trade policies. The bill’s inclusion counters China’s growing economic influence in the developing world. In remarks during Committee debate on the General System of Preferences Reform Act, Rep. LaHood stated: "I want to commend this body for taking up the important task of renewing and revising the Generalized System of Preferences. The updates that we are considering today will not only promote economic growth around the world but also provide much needed modernization to GSP – America’s oldest trade preference program. I also want to acknowledge Trade Subcommittee Chairman Smith for his leadership and advocacy on both a renewed GSP and on the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill, or MTB. These trade preference programs are vital to promoting American manufacturing and ensuring U.S. global leadership, and it is regrettable that we allowed both programs to expire nearly three and a half years ago. The GSP bill before us today is the first step in getting back on track and I look forward to moving the bill forward and hopefully considering an MTB renewal in the near future as well. I am especially pleased that the GSP renewal bill we are marking up today incorporates my bill, the Digital Trade for Development Act, which will add new criteria for countries seeking beneficiary status to account for digital trade barriers and deter the proliferation of restrictive digital trade policies. Many of us on this side of the aisle are exceedingly frustrated with the Administration’s inability to promote a coherent trade agenda. When we think about digital trade, obviously there is growing concern about the Chinese Communist Party’s global economic influence, and their promotion of digital trade policies that run counter to American ideals. These Chinese policies promote censorship and surveillance, encourage human rights abuses, and force unwanted technology transfers through initiatives like the Digital Silk Road. Rather than providing a free-market alternative to the CCP’s digital governance model, this Administration sends mixed messages on the global stage by walking back long-held, bipartisan digital trade proposals outlined at the World Trade Organization without clearly articulating a policy path forward. Last November, Congresswoman DelBene and I co-led a bipartisan letter along with 36 House colleagues to you underscoring how your decision threatens America’s leadership and ultimately harms American businesses and workers. Participants were judged anonymously by a volunteer panel and award winners were chosen by a cumulative vote. There were 125 pieces of art submitted from 16 schools throughout the 16th District. “It was great to see so much energy and enthusiasm from students and teachers in this year's art competition, enabling students to express themselves through art," stated Rep. Obama and Biden officials cannot be allowed to abuse government power to spy on their political opponents without consequences, and I do not trust the Biden officials to adhere to the reforms in this bill because they are blatantly violating our immigration and border security laws daily. "We know Biden is lying when he says he needs warrantless spying powers to protect our national security because if Biden was serious about our national security, he would secure the southern border instead of allowing 10 million unvetted foreign nationals to walk into our country, including terrorists, murderers, and drug traffickers. The U.S. Trade Leadership in the Indo-Pacific Act will reassert Congress’s authority over trade to combat China’s growing economic influence in the Indo-Pacific through renewed American efforts at re-engaging our allies and identifying opportunities for regional partnerships. The U.S. has not concluded a single comprehensive trade agreement with an Indo-Pacific partner in more than 10 years. Meanwhile, China has engaged our allies, actively pursuing trade agendas that block the U.S. from competing. The United States is failing to promote a meaningful trade agenda in the region and could risk falling behind. Trade with our Indo-Pacific allies is critical as it supports millions of American jobs and represents several of our top export markets. A targeted U.S. International Trade Commission study will develop meaningful solutions to achieve U.S. objectives through a bipartisan Indo-Pacific Trade Strategy Commission, which will deliver recommendations on options that Congress can take to compete in the region. LaHood released the following statement after the vote: "We face the greatest terrorist threat since 9/11. The most important tool our Intelligence Community has to keep Americans safe from those threats is Section 702 of FISA, but it must be reformed to protect American civil liberties from abuses. H.R. 6233 would expand protections under existing law to third-party groups who participate in the cleaning and re-purposing of inactive coal mines, abandoned before modern regulations. Throughout the United States, there is over $12 billion worth of abandoned mine sites with no responsible party. The outstanding abandoned mine land (AML) liabilities, or the estimated cost of the earth work needed to complete the reclamation of all remaining AML sites, in Illinois is currently $163 million. "Mining is an important part of our economy, but unused or abandoned mines present safety risks and leave opportunities for economic and land development on the table," said Rep. LaHood. "The Community Reclamation Partnerships Act will enable partnerships between states and nongovernmental entities to reclaim and restore land and water resources adversely affected by coal mining activities. This legislation would establish guidelines for solar panel projects on prime and unique farmland funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. This will ensure that rural communities have a say in the approval process for solar panel projects, while still giving farmers the flexibility to utilize renewable energy on their operations. The SOLAR Act will also require that funding recipients have soil remediation plans in place and the funding secured to remove the solar panels upon project completion. “We are losing precious and productive farmland that is being used up, acre after acre,” said Bost. "That has a big impact on America's agricultural supply chain, our food security, and our local economies. The worst part is, many local communities aren't allowed to have a say in what land is designated for solar projects. My legislation puts the power back into the hands of our local communities by allowing them to determine what's best for the area, not bureaucrats in Springfield." LaHood, who is the Chairman of HPSCI’s Subcommittee on the NSA and Cyber, has led the committee’s effort to reform and reauthorize Section 702 of FISA. You can view Rep. LaHood’s statement and questioning here or below. Key Excerpts LaHood walked through the extensive reforms HPSCI Republicans proposed to reform the FBI, prevent the abuses carried out in Crossfire Hurricane, and bring greater transparency to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC). He also highlighted the extensive support HPSCI Republicans received from national security conservatives for HPSCI's FISA reforms. In questioning, Rep. LaHood stated: "When we think about how essential Section 702 has been over the last nine years, I think about instances like taking out al-Zawahiri, the al-Qaeda leader, in Kabul, I think about Soleimani the Iranian general, al-Baghdadi the leader of the Islamic State, al-Sudani, the ISIS leader in Somalia, and of course Osama bin Laden. Director Burns, can you talk about how essential 702 was in general for those instances and other counterterrorism actions? In follow up, CIA Director Burns said: "It was crucial in each of the areas that you mentioned and in 2022 when the United States took out both Zawahiri in Kabul, but also the Hajji Abdullah, the then Emir of ISIS. 702 was also crucial in that operation." On efforts to address the current fentanyl crisis in the United States, CIA Director Burns went on to add: "702 has been absolutely crucial. Last year, for example, 70% of the successful CIA disruptions of illicit synthetic drug operations came as a result of 702. The CHEERS Act would expand tax incentives for qualifying investments into energy-efficient systems to include keg and tap property, supporting the use of draft lines and keg equipment at restaurants and bars. Draft beer is the most sustainable way for packaging by retailers and suppliers and the legislation would provide immediate relief to local small businesses. "Illinois has a rich history of craft brewers and local bars from Chicago to Peoria and beyond," said Rep. LaHood. "Many of our local businesses and the hospitality sector at-large are still facing economic challenges. This bipartisan bill will support these local establishments by incentivizing the expansion of tap lines and keg equipment on commercial premises. Local bars and restaurants are an essential part of the identity of our communities in Illinois, and I am proud to lead this effort to revitalize the hospitality sector, support local jobs, generate economic growth, and promote the use of sustainable tap equipment in bars and restaurants." “Las Vegas is our nation's hospitality and entertainment capital, if not the world. The CHEERS Act would boost not only our smaller bars, clubs, and entertainment venues but also many of our casinos, hotels, and arenas. This will allow many small business owners in my district to grow their business and invest more in their employees. And we will reduce waste created by using smaller, disposable containers at many restaurants, bars and other venues,” said Rep. Horsford. “I am proud to join my colleague, Mr. LaHood, in introducing this legislation to boost our local and national economy.” Hospitality groups a… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-07T20:32:04Z

"Biden took a victory lap for an economy the American people have no faith in and celebrated a legislative agenda that’s already failed. He led off his speech asking for more money to secure Ukraine’s border; but he made securing America’s border his 17th priority, soon after Snickers bars and fixing online concert ticket sales. "This was Biden’s last big chance to convince the American people he deserved four more years in the White House. The President's open border policies are an unmitigated disaster and have created humanitarian and national security crises that are now reaching communities throughout Illinois. Working families in Illinois are also bearing the burden of radical energy policies, government overreach, and inflationary spending, while prices at the pump and in the grocery store have reached unbearable levels. "I agree with President Biden that we must work together to address the threats from China, Iran, and other adversaries, as well as pass the critical bipartisan provisions I authored to boost low-income housing and provide relief to Illinois families. In the letter, LaHood and Sorensen write: "As you know, the Peoria P&DC facility employs over 120 people. The potential decision to move good-paying, high-quality jobs from downstate Illinois to the South Suburban P&DC in Bedford Park, Illinois, will harm working families in our region and likely have a negative impact on the downstate economy in Illinois. Our constituents rely on the services provided by USPS, and our local postal service centers are important cornerstones of our community. "In order for us to better understand the potential impact on our constituents, we ask you to answer the following questions with a response by March 29, 2024: How many jobs and families in the Peoria area are expected to be impacted by these potential changes? What guarantees can you provide that moving operations to the South Suburban P&DC will improve efficiency and achieve quicker mail delivery? For employees unable or unwilling to move from Peoria to Bedford Park, which is 150 miles away, what efforts are USPS taking to provide retraining programs or alternative opportunities within the postal service?" "Pritzker said that every Illinois resident needs to step up and provide free services for illegal immigrants, but he did not announce that Hyatt Hotels would be providing free hotel rooms to shelter illegal aliens at no cost to taxpayers. "Pritzker is placing this burden on working families and bizarrely blaming President Trump, even though Joe Biden has occupied the Oval Office for three years and Biden is the one who opened our southern border to this invasion by reversing all of President Trump's border security policies. "Pritzker argued that Congress should pass amnesty legislation, which would worsen the crisis by offering 'asylum amnesty' and a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants who are seeking free housing, healthcare, welfare, and benefits from US taxpayers.
