What resulted was an unfair process that lacked credibility and transparency and put a premium on political theater instead of facts. As the Democrats' case fell apart, they struggled to make their hyperbolic claims stick and so neither article of impeachment names a specific high crime or misdemeanor. By any objective standard, it is the thinnest case imaginable. The bottom line is President Trump has not committed an impeachable offense, and I was proud to vote against the articles of impeachment this week. USMCA Passes House After months of delays, Michigan workers have another reason to be optimistic about the economy thanks to passage ofH.R. 5430, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) Implementation Act. Passing the USMCA will put NAFTA in the rearview mirror and helplevel the playing field for farmers, workers, and manufacturers. With the USMCA, Michigan will be in a stronger economic position, boosting our state's manufacturing and agriculture sectors and creating many more good-paying job opportunities. Strengthening Retirement Security All Americans deserve a financially secure retirement. Yet for too many families, having enough money in their golden years is a source of constant worry and uncertainty. That is why I was proud to see my bipartisan Increasing Access to a Secure Retirement Actpass the House this week. Once it is signed into law, it will make it easier for employers to offer broader savings options for their employees, taking an important step in removing barriers for Americans as they work to achieve a financially secure retirement. Supporting the Great Lakes This week I voted forfunding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, Soo Locks, and other important Michigan priorities. First place went to Gabby Dougherty from Chelsea High School. Her winning app, "G.L.A.M.," educates the user about Michigan and the Great Lakes in a fun and interactive way. The user can learn through playing games, reading fun facts, looking at pictures, and playing trivia. It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol and featured on the House of Representatives website along with other winning entries from around the country. "The Congressional App Challenge is a wonderful chance for students to have fun learning about coding and display their creativity at the same time," said Walberg. "Congratulations to Gabby on winning this year's contest, and I appreciate her drive to share her love for Michigan and our treasured Great Lakes. In the digital age, I am proud to see students in our district pursue an interest in computer science, and I encourage them to continue to work hard and flourish in and out of the classroom." Second place was awarded to Nicole Stafford, John Manahan, and Morgan Kasper from Chelsea High School. They created an app entitled "J.M.N. Weather Games," which informs children about the importance of weather safety through topics such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards. The app cleverly uses a game to educate in an entertaining and informative way. They were inspired to create their app from interest in meteorological events. The Congressional App Challenge, now in its fifth year, is a nationwide contest designed to highlight the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education by encouraging students to create an application for a mobile phone, tablet, or computer. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:45:33Z |
| http://huizenga.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=401023 | Huizenga Speaks and Votes in Support of Michigan Workers, Job Creation, and the USMCA | 2019-12-19 | 2019 | 2019-12 | Republican | House | MI | Bill Huizenga | H001058 | huizenga.house.gov | legacy | Today, Congressman Huizenga (MI-02) voted in favor of the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA). The USMCA passed the House with strong bipartisan support by a vote of 385 to 41. Prior to the vote, Congressman Huizenga spoke on the House floor discussing the impact of the USMCA on West Michigan, manufacturing, agriculture, and our nation. Congressman Bill Huizenga: I rise today in strong support of the United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement negotiated by President Trump and his team as well as the leadership here in the House. For more than a year, I have called on Speaker Pelosi to have this vote on this trade agreement. I am glad the day has arrived. The stakes for Michigan are extremely high. One estimate is that 38.9% of Michigan's total GDP depends on trade the highest in the nation and a staggering 65% of the state's exports are bound for Canada and Mexico. Trade with our nation's neighbors support more than 338,000 Michigan jobs. Ratifying the USMCA will lead to more than $30 billion of investment in new automotive manufacturing in the U.S. and create more than 75,000 jobs for American autoworkers Passing the USMCA is also vitally important to our agricultural community. Michigan's food and agricultural exports total approximately $1.98 billion annually, and support roughly 805,000 food and agricultural jobs. This agreement will level the playing field for our farmers, growers, and producers and expand market access for commodities such as dairy goods, poultry, and eggs. The is a win for Michigan workers, farmers, and job creators and I support this bill. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | ||

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed the 2020 spending package, which includes a permanent repeal of the Medical Device Tax. Upton voted for and the U.S. House passed the legislation earlier this week, and it now heads to the President's desk to be signed into law. Protecting Michigan jobs and American medical innovation have been two of my top priorities, so the repeal of the Medical Device Tax is welcome news, especially for local employers like Stryker. Because of this repeal, Stryker could save nearly $100 million over the course of a year, allowing them to invest more into jobs, their employees, and research that will result in huge benefits for patients, Upton said. This is a huge bipartisan win for patients, jobs, and medical innovation in southwest Michigan and across the country. "Repealing the Medical Device Tax will provide a substantial boost to the healthcare innovation ecosystem,"Kevin Lobo, Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Stryker, said."It will enable Stryker to invest more in research and development, jobs, and innovation that will support our mission of working together with our customers to make health care better." The 2.3 percent tax on the gross sales of medical devices became law as part of the Affordable Care Act but has not been collected over the past four years. The tax was set to take effect again in January. Upton visited Stryker in Kalamazoo this past November to participate in an answer and question session with employees and see their innovative medical devices. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) today issued the following statement after the U.S. House passed the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement with wide bipartisan support. The new US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement will help American workers, American jobs, and the American economy, and I am proud to support it. Canada and Mexico are two of our state's and our nation's most important trading partners, supporting more than 2 million jobs nationally at 43,000 manufacturers. The bottom line is it's a win for Michigan workers. Trade is absolutely vital to our state's economy, and our auto suppliers, manufacturers, and farmers will all benefit greatly from this new agreement. I hope to see it passed through the Senate and signed by the President quickly. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
| https://bergman.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=504 | Bergman Votes in Favor of Historic USMCA Trade Deal | 2019-12-19 | 2019 | 2019-12 | Republican | House | MI | Jack Bergman | B001301 | bergman.house.gov | bergman | https://bergman.house.gov/news/documentquery.aspx | scraper | Today, Congressman Jack Bergman voted in favor of the United States-Mexico-Canada-Trade-Agreement (USMCA). The USMCA promotes a more fair and free trade policy, and will lead to a more prosperous Michigan. The trade deal has been supported by groups ranging from labor unions and retailers to rural farmers and manufacturers alike. In 2018, Michigan exported over $36 billion of goods to Canada and Mexico, including transportation equipment, oil and gas, metal products, foods, and machinery. The USMCA agreement passed the House 385 - 41. “From giving Michigan dairy farmers a more open market in Canada to cutting red tape allowing small businesses easier access to foreign markets - USMCA is a win for First District workers. American farmers, manufacturers, and workers have been left behind by outdated and poorly negotiated trade deals. The USMCA corrects many of these wrongs and sets our trade policies on the right course,"said Rep. Bergman. Passage of the USMCA is a win for every sector of our economy, including: Agriculture: The USMCA reduces Canadian and Mexican tariffs on American agricultural goods and eliminates other unfair trading practices – helping our farmers and ranchers sell more of their goods abroad. Autoworkers and Manufacturers: The USMCA creates new requirements for producing auto parts in North America and ensuring those parts are made in high-wage areas – supporting U.S. autoworkers and giving U.S. automakers an edge over foreign competitors. Digital Trade: The agreement creates the strongest standard for digital trade in any international agreement to date. This chapter will provide certainty for our tech sector, protect our privacy, and encourage cross-border growth of digital transactions and e-commerce. Small Businesses and Consumers: Both Canada and Mexico are increasing their de minimis thresholds, or the maximum value of a good shipped across the border before tariffs are applied. This will make it easier for consumers and small businesses to participate in cross-border trade. Intel… | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:45:33Z |

This updated agreement is a victory for all Americans and demonstrates what can be accomplished when Democrats and Republicans put partisan politics aside and work together for the American people. In my home state of Michigan, thousands of jobs are supported by agriculture, and the USMCA will ensure greater market access for exports important to Michigan farmers. Michiganders also know the importance of manufacturing jobs in our state, especially in the automotive sector, and the USMCA will support these industries by requiring new labor standards across North America. For far too long American workers have suffered from NAFTA's outdated policies and the USMCA is a massive improvement over NAFTA in every way. I applaud Ambassador Lighthizer and all his deputies at the USTR for their hard work on seeing this trade agreement through, and I proudly voted yes. The new agreement fulfills President Donald Trump's promise during the 2016 campaign to pursue a better trade agreement for the American people. "Hardworking men and women in Michigan are enjoying a strong economy right now with risingwagesand low unemployment. The USMCA is anotherwin forthose workersbecause it levels the playing fieldfor manufacturing andmakes our country more competitive with our neighbors," said Congressman John Moolenaar. "This agreement also helps Michigan farmers, especiallyour dairy farmers in the Fourth District, by opening new markets for them to sell their products." This holiday season will be a bit brighter for America's dairy farmers as today's vote brings us one step closer to finalizing USMCA and securing a more certain future for the dairy industry, said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation. Michigan's dairy industry appreciates the work that Congressman Moolenaar hasdone to ensure USMCA will provide expanded market opportunities and a more level playing field for dairy exports. Now we are counting on the Senate to act quickly and finalize USMCA in order to deliver its improvements to North American trade. The agreement was first signed on November 30, 2018, by President Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on November 30, 2018. More than a year later, it finally received a vote inthe House of Representatives. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Throughout this process, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat Majority have broken historic bipartisan standards, denied the President due process, and moved the goalposts time and again in order to shape their desired narrative and outcome. The fact that 44% of my Democrat colleagues voted to impeach the President of the United States before the Ukraine Call on July 25th even took place exemplifies their partisan desire to remove this President. Our nation's founders warned about using impeachment as a political weapon. Today, Speaker Pelosi ignored those warnings and the House proceeded with the most partisan and divisive impeachment vote in the history of our nation. The Democrats' endless drive to impeach this President has further divided our nation and damaged the House of Representatives as an institution of government. By making the decision to abandon the Judiciary Committee and conduct the majority of the impeachment proceedings behind closed doors through the Intelligence Committee, Speaker Pelosi has set a dangerous and partisan precedent that will have a chilling effect on how constitutional matters are handled in the future. After reviewing the facts, I believe Speaker Pelosi, Adam Schiff, and their Democrat colleagues have failed to make their case for impeachment. In just under 11 months, the American people will go to the polls and have the opportunity to vote and make their selection for President. By engaging in a rushed, partisan process, Democrats are seeking to either overturn the outcome of the 2016… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I do not believe President Trump's actions constitute high crimes and misdemeanors and therefore voted against both Articles of Impeachment. Congressman Mitchell spoke on the House floor during debate on the Articles of Impeachment.Click here or above to watch his remarks. (Remarks as prepared) Today the House of Representatives votes on two Articles of Impeachment for President Trump. Members, and all Americans, must recognize that impeachment was intended to be a safety valve, rarely used only when a President acts in such an immoral and blatantly unlawful manner as to threaten the basis of our Republic. As we cast votes on these Articles, the future tone of this House and politics in this nation must be carefully considered. The issue is not whether we agree with the rhetoric of the President, his political tactics, his use of Twitter, his policy choices, or his political rallies. One of our Founders, Alexander Hamilton, warned of the risks of impeachment becoming a partisan act in the Federalist Papers. This impeachment inquiry and these Articles clearly have not heeded this warning. These proceedings are weaponizing impeachment, making it simply another election tool. I have deliberately examined the evidence presented throughout this inquiry, and used as a guide our nation's history and our founding documents. My decision is not guided by my party affiliation. I do not believe President Trump's actions, as described in these Articles, constitute high crimes and misdemeanors. I will be voting NO on both Articles of Impeachment. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, House Democrats passed the first partisan impeachment in the history of the United States with not a single member of the minority party voting for impeachment. The inquiry which was announced on September 24 has yielded months of investigations and hearings. However, Democrats did not allow Republicans to call their own witnesses or the opportunity to have their own hearing. Democrats have also repeatedly argued that the president shouldcooperate if he has nothing to hide, a logic-defying argument thatupends the principles ofAmerica's legal system. Today, Democratspassed two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump even though theircase for impeachment has faltered badly in recent weeks astheir public hearings have actually turned the public against impeachment. A new Gallup poll out this morning showed Americanssiding withPresident Trump, with his approval ratingrising six points since the Democrats launchedtheirinquiry against him. The same pollalso showed a majority ofAmericans' oppose impeachment. Additionally, a recentgroup of Saginawresidentssaid theyoverwhelmingly do not support impeachment. As Axios reported, the residents believe impeachment is"a distraction from the issues that would actually improve their lives." According to reporting in The Washington Post,Democrats have been working on waysto impeach Trump sincethe day hetook office, and they might pursue impeachment again next year. The articles of impeachment now go to the Senate for a trial, and if they are rejected, Congressman Al Green (D-TX) has already said "we can impeach again" and pursue additional impeachment articles against President Trump. Congressman Bergman has advocated for long term spending deals that provide stable and continuous funding, stating that, “Continuing Resolutions are not a sustainable path for long-term fiscal stability.” With today’s vote, Rep. Bergman supported many First District priorities, including: $75 million for building a new Soo Lock; Providing the largest pay raise for our troops in a decade; Maintaining pro-life protections; $642 million for rural broadband programs, helping communities throughout the First District improve connectivity and competitiveness; Increasing funding for the U.S. Coast Guard, including projects under the Great Lakes Icebreaker Program Office; Extending Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding; $1.7 billion funding for the border wall and additional border security; Increasing Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) funding to $320 million; Increasing funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF); Maintaining long-standing Second Amendment protections that were at risk in previous versions of this bill; Extending funding for Community Health Centers and the Special Diabetes Programs; Funding for the Department of Transportation’s Essential Air Service; Maintaining the freeze on Congressional pay; Increasing funding for Rural Development programs; and Fully funding the VA MISSION Act and the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act. Again, Congress needed a last-minute agreement to fund the federal government for the remaining ten months of FY2020. This process is not something that should be pushed off until the last minute, as Congress failing to pass appropriations bills on time puts American families and our military in a position of uncertainty. Cramming eight months of legislative work into the last days of the year is irresponsible and the American people deserve better. That's why earlier this year I introduced the Protecting Our Children's Future Act, which would make long overdue reforms to Congress' broken budget process. I encourage all of Congress to work together to fix our broken budget process in order to stop the cycle of continuing resolutions and last-minute spending bills like these. Despite my continued disappointment at the process, I ultimately voted yes for both pieces of legislation because they contain important priorities for the people in Michigan and America. These bills include full funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to protect the Great Lakes, funding for Army Corps of Engineers projects like the Soo Locks, funding for agriculture and rural development, funding for improved security at our border, and increased funding for national defense with a pay raise for our troops. They also maintain all existing pro-life protections, extend community health center funding, and repeal three onerous Obamacare taxes. This is a historic day. For the first time in decades, legislation funding the construction of a new Soo lock is on track to become law. This is a major priority for our state and as our state's senior member of the House Appropriations Committee I have worked hard to get this funding through Congress, said Congressman John Moolenaar. A new lock will create jobs and help ensure Great Lakes shipping can move the raw materials needed for American manufacturing and Michigan-made products. The $75.3 million in funding is included in a year-end government Appropriations bill and it will be used to begin the design and constructionof a new lock. Additional funding will need to be appropriatedannually and the entire project is expected to cost nearly a billion dollarsby the time it iscompletedin the years ahead. The Army Corps of Engineershas alreadylistedavailable positions and aSoo Locks Virtual Job Fair has been set up by Michigan Works to recruit engineers and construction workers. InvestUP, an economic development organization, estimates the new lock will create 1,100 jobs. Congressman Moolenaar previously voted for the funding in May when it passed the House Appropriations Committee. The letter urges the FCC to account for the sustainability of deployed service that will stand the test of time and be capable of delivering rural broadband that is comparable to urban areas for the foreseeable future. "Living in the 21st century economy, access to reliable and affordable broadband is a necessity. Business, health care, education, and communication all rely heavily upon high speed internet, so ensuring availability in rural areas is critically important," said Congressman Walberg. "Too many citizens don't have access to these services and we need to encourage future-proofing broadband deployment so rural areas will no longer be left behind." "High speed internet access is an essential service in our interconnected world. As the FCC funds efforts to make broadband service more available in rural America, it's critical that they do so with the future in mind," said Congressman Welch. "Our bipartisan letter demonstrates the breadth of support in Congress for ensuring that broadband deployed now is ‘future proof' so that rural residents are not stuck in a perpetual state of second class service compared to more populated areas of the country." The full text of the letter is below and a PDF can be downloaded here. Jack Bergman passed the U.S. House of Representatives. These proposals would improve federal support for rural broadband buildouts in the most unserved and underserved areas of our nation. “Representing and living in a truly remote area of Michigan, I understand the need for expanded broadband infrastructure. However, inaccurate mapping data has impaired the FCC’s ability to decide who should receive funding. Current mapping methods leave our unserved and underserved communities at risk of being overlooked. This legislation helps us take a step forward to directly address connectivity issues that limit opportunity for the First District, and other remote communities,” said Congressman Bergman. H.R. 4229 – Broadband Deployment Accuracy and Technological Availability (DATA) Act and H.R. 4227 – Mapping Accuracy Promotes Service (MAPS) Act passed the House by voice vote. The Broadband DATA Act would make the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) requirements for broadband data collection more accurate and standardized to produce accurate broadband maps used in funding decisions. Similarly, the MAPS Act increases accountability by making it illegal to knowingly report inaccurate broadband mapping data to the FCC. Improved broadband mapping will level the playing field for rural and remote areas, such as in Michigan’s First Congressional District, when applying for federal funding. Background: In August 2019, the FCC announced it would begin the process of modernizing broadband mapping. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:45:33Z |

Lower Drug Costs, More Cures Act This week, I took to the floor to advocate for a bipartisan solution to bring down the cost of drug prices, while not risking future cures. The Lower Costs, More Cures Act puts a cap on seniors' out-of-pocket costs for the first time ever, makes insulin more affordable, increases transparency in pricing, cuts the cost of drug administration, and creates a new trade negotiator so America will no longer subsidize the world's drug innovation. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today announced that Kevin Wang, a student at St. Joseph High School, has won the 2019 Congressional App Challenge from the Sixth Congressional District. Upton met with Wang at his school earlier today, where he got to see the app and discuss the importance of science and coding to 21st century careers. Kevin and the app he created serve as shining examples of the talented students we have here in southwest Michigan, Upton said. The app that Kevin developed not only allows students to use their eBooks to continue their studies outside of class, but it also serves as a kiosk app which will lock users into their app without distractions and notifications from other sources, helping them to focus on their studies. It's really a great idea and I'm incredibly proud of him. I'm grateful for all of the students who submitted entries, and I also want to thank our judges who helped select the winning app. I was studying for my final exam in biology, and I couldn't focus on my ebook without changing my music, visiting Youtube, or chatting, Wang said. So, I needed a way to "lock" me into my ebook, but there was no app to do that for Chrome OS at the time. There wasn't even an app for my ebook platform, and I desperately needed one. Hence, I spent the rest of the day, making the kiosk mode compatible app. Wang's app will be featured on the Congressional App Challenge website for the remainder of the year. His app was selected from a number of entries from across the district. Students were invited to submit computer programs (or apps) written in any programming language, for any platform, such as desktop/PC, web, mobile, raspberry Pi, or other devices. Read the full letter HERE or below. December 13, 2019 The Honorable Mitch McConnell Majority Leader United States Senate The Honorable Charles Schumer Minority Leader United States Senate The Honorable Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House United States House of Representatives The Honorable Kevin McCarthy Republican Leader United States House of Representatives Dear Congressional Leadership: As we wrap up the year and finalize the negotiations on Fiscal Year 2020 appropriations, we urge you to include No Budget, No Pay as part of any end-of-year spending package. Appropriating funds is the most basic duty of Congress, but for the past 40 years, Congress has cut corners by passing short-term spending bills – Continuing Resolutions – that just keep government funded at existing levels. When Congress fails to pass appropriations, American people are hurt. Just this year, American families suffered under the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Air traffic controllers, members of the Coast Guard, and fire safety officials worked without pay, while Members of Congress continued to receive their paychecks. That is wrong, and we’re urging you to move forward with No Budget, No Pay before the end of the year. The concept is simple: Members of Congress should not be paid if they don’t pass appropriations. If Congress can’t do its most basic task, then Members of Congress shouldn’t get a paycheck. This proposal has bipartisan support and is already moving through Congress. It was approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee in June, and is included as part of the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act (S. 1877). Instead, the Speaker and the Democrat majority chose not to work with Republicans and ram through a very partisan messaging bill that has no chance of becoming law. In reality, H.R. 3 is a sweeping expansion of government control over patients' health care. This misguided legislation will result in less medical innovation, fewer cures, and less access to both life-saving treatments as well as prescription medications that enhance our overall quality of life. In order to deliver results for West Michigan and communities across the nation, Congress must strike a bipartisan approach. That is why I voted in favor and continue to support the Lower Costs, More Cures Act. This legislation includes more than 40 provisions that have garnered bipartisan support. With the Trump Administration showing a desire to lower the cost of health care as well as the cost of prescription drugs, Congress must rise to the occasion. The Lower Costs, More Cure Acts can deliver cost savings for West Michigan, increase transparency and accountability, and maintain our innovative edge that is crucial to discovering new cures and developing new treatments. Background: H.R. 19, the Lower Costs, More Cures Act, uses bipartisan reforms to lower out of pocket spending, protect access to new medicines and cures, strengthen transparency, and champion competition. Congressman Huizenga is a cosponsor of this important health care legislation. Here are some examples of how the Lower Costs, More Cures Act would impact the status quo and enact positive change for patients. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today delivered remarks on the House floor in opposition of H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, and in support for the bipartisan alternative, H.R. 19, the Lower Costs, More Cures Act. As the author of the historic 21st Century Cures Act, Upton expressed his concerns with how H.R. 3 would stifle innovation, leading to fewer life-saving cures and drugs. The CBO says 15 fewer cures could be developed because of H.R. 3, and other estimates, including from the Council of Economic Advisers, say that number is closer to 100 fewer cures. H.R. 19 will help reduce drug costs on patients, advance cures for devastating diseases, and can pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law. The final vote on H.R. 3 will happen later today. Click here to view Upton's remarks. Full remarks: Well, thank you, Madam Speaker. I want to thank the Democratic leadership for, I think, the first time this year allowing our side to actually have a substitute to a major piece of legislation. And I want to thank our leadership because of that substitute is not a partisan substitute but a bipartisan substitute. In fact, every single provision in this bill has got strong bipartisan support, which was packaged together. Tomorrow will mark the third anniversary of President Obama's signing of 21st Century Cures, a bill that Diana DeGette and I helped shepherd through our committee on unanimous vote, and we passed here in the House 392-26. It increased NIH funding by some $45 billion over a 10-year span. It sped up the approval of drugs and devices, and just after three years, we've seen the number of cell, gene, and nucleoid therapies have more than doubled. In fact, research this last year will actually exceed $13 billion. And the FDA is predicted as approving 20 to 30 gene therapy drugs by the year 2025. That's wonderful news. We all want to do something about drug prices, and that's what a vote for our substitute, HR 19, will do, and the president will sign that bill. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today issued the following statement opposing the Articles of Impeachment. Regrettably the impeachment process has become exactly what our great founding fathers warned us against. It has been highly partisan and clearly motivated by what I believe is an attempt to overturn the last election.I get it. Democrats aren't happy with the result. But the time to vote on the next President is next November, not next week. Within 24 hours of President Trump's election, efforts began to impeach him.We can't have the impeachment process decided by political whim. It must be decided by the standard set by the founders of our democracy. The President's behavior was wrongheaded, inappropriate, and ill-advised, but was it impeachable? My answer is no. I might add I voted against the abuse of power article of impeachment against President Clinton for many of the same reasons. Many times throughout history Presidents have demanded executive privilege. The Constitution establishes an independent judiciary for a reason, to settle disputes between the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch. Since the courts have not ruled in this situation, obstruction of Congress is premature. After these votes, we need to work on bridging the partisan divide in this country. We can't rewind; we need to reset. Together, we need to focus on what the American people really want us to focus on, solving problems that actually impact their lives. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Upton spoke with the EPA on Tuesday. This is welcomed news for our community and our environment, that's for sure. We have been working with our local, state, and federal partners on this issue for years, and today's announcement marks an important step, Upton said. Protecting the health and safety of southwest Michigan families is one of my top priorities, and cleaning this site up and restoring it is absolutely necessary for the well-being of our communities. This Superfund site has been listed on the EPA Administrator's Emphasis List of Superfund sites targeted for immediate, intense action. Each site on the list has a short-term milestone to provide the basis for tracking the site's progress. According to the EPA and Department of Justice, under the settlement terms, NCR Corporation has agreed to spend approximately $135.7 million cleaning up three areas of OU 5. OU 5 includes 80miles of the Kalamazoo River and three miles of Portage Creek. In addition, NCR will pay: $76.5 million to EPA for past and future costs in support of river cleanup activities; $27 million to natural resource trustees of the Kalamazoo River Natural Resource Trustee Council for natural resources damage assessment and claims; and $6 million to State of Michigan for past and future costs. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today voted for and the House passed bipartisan legislation that aims to help build a legal and reliable workforce for our nation's agriculture community. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act would provide agricultural workers an opportunity to earn legal status through continued agricultural employment, improve the H-2A visa program, and establish a mandatory E-Verify for the agriculture industry. Upton was an original cosponsor of the legislation, which was introduced by U.S. Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA). The bill now advances to the U.S. Senate. Upton spoke on the House floor earlier today in support of the legislation. Our farmers in southwest Michigan who help to literally feed the world have made clear to me that labor shortages are one of the biggest obstacles they face year after year. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act is a solution to that challenge, Upton said. For our ag sector to remain the envy of the world, we need real ag labor reform that is fair for workers and growers and results in a reliable workforce. I'm proud that my colleagues in the House came together to pass this bipartisan legislation that will make a real positive impact on our ag industry, and I hope to see it advance through the Senate and be signed by the President. The bill will: Establish a program for agricultural workers in the United States to earn legal status through continued agricultural employment and contribution to the U.S. agricultural economy. Reform the H-2A program to provide more flexibility for employers, while ensuring critical protections for workers. The bill focuses on modifications to make the program more responsive and user-friendly for employers and provides access to the program for industries with year-round labor needs. Establish mandatory, nationwide E-Verify system for all agricultural employment with a structured phase-in and guaranteed due process for authorized workers who are incorrectly rejected… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The measure will now go to President Donald J. Trump's desk for approval. This NDAA Conference report restores the tradition of bipartisan support for our national defense in the U.S. Congress. The FY 2020 NDAA contains important priorities for Michigan’s First District, including: expressing the importance of the Northern Strike exercise at Camp Grayling, expressing Congressional support for the construction of a second Poe-sized lock in Sault Ste Marie, prohibiting the use of firefighting foam containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and authorizing the National Guard to access Defense Environmental Remediation Account (DERA) funds to address PFOS and PFOA exposure and contamination in and around National Guard bases. Congressman Jack Bergman stated, "The men and women of our Armed Forces sacrifice so much for our nation, Congress must ensure they have the resources needed to maintain mission readiness and have the tools necessary to confront our enemies. The FY 2020 NDAA gives our troops their largest pay raise in a decade, repeals the widow tax, and includes provisions to help mitigate the future risk of PFAS exposure. I'm proud to support this legislation, and give our troops the resources and consistency needed to remain the readiest and most lethal force in the world." Additionally, the FY 2020 NDAA: Includes an additional $5.3 billion in emergency funding for military installations damaged by natural disasters; Provides a 3.1% pay raise for our troops, the largest increase in a decade; Removes poison pills included in the initial House version of the bill; Provides the resources to continue to rebuild readiness, advance modernization of the nuclear triad, develop emerging technologies, enhance missile defense, and confront our adversaries; Provides up to 12 … | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:45:33Z |

This year's NDAA funds military readiness and modernizes our Armed Forces to confront threats to our national security. Critically, it also provides our troops and their families with a 3.1% pay raise, the largest increase in a decade. The NDAA is of great importance to our national security, and I am proud to fulfill one of our Constitutional duties of providing for the common defense. This NDAA includes provisions that address PFAS contamination, as well as support for capabilities important to Michigan's 10th District, such as A-10s and ground combat vehicles. I am pleased to see bipartisan support for this bill and am proud to do right by military families and continue to build and maintain the strongest military in the world. Several of Congressman Mitchell's priorities were incorporated into the bill, including a prohibition on the use of Russian natural gas at American bases in Europe and reforms to the acquisition workforce. The FY20 NDAA also establishes the United States Space Force as the sixth service branch to advance our capabilities to ensure security and stability in this rapidly developing domain, sustains our investments in nuclear modernization, and supports our allies in Europe and the Middle East, including Israel. Other notable accomplishments include sanctions on the Russian Nordstream II and Turkstream pipelines, the repeal of the Widow's Tax to ensure Gold Star families receive the benefits they deserve, and reforms to the Feres Doctrine to hold the military accountable for medical malpractice against servicemembers. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

For the past year, I have consistently called on Speaker Pelosi to schedule a vote on the USMCA because it will strengthen our economy, create jobs, and provide new opportunities for families across Michigan. H.R. 729 creates a Living Shoreline Grant Program which authorizes $50 million per year from Fiscal Year 2020-2025 for grants to state and local governments, Indian tribes, and nonprofit groups for projects to protect and restore shorelines from erosion, coastal storms, and high water. The Huizenga Amendment, which was adopted unanimously by the House, requires that no less than 10% ($5 million annually) of this grant funding will go to projects within the Great Lakes. H.R. 729 passed the House by a vote of 262 to 151. Our communities are facing devastating consequences if we don't act to protect our shorelines now, said Congressman Bill Huizenga, who serves as a Republican Chair of the bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force. It is imperative that resources are provided through all available options to enhance the shorelines of the Great Lakes and protect our homes and our communities. I have a responsibility to not only highlight this issue but to advocate for those who are in desperate need and in desperate situations. That is one of the reasons why I supported this package. Congressman Bill Huizenga: While I stand here today as I offer my amendment, residents across the Great Lakes are facing imminent threats to their property, their infrastructure and to the shorelines themselves due to historically high water levels. Great Lakes communities, including many in my own district along the shores of Lake Michigan, are in critical need of shoreline projects to protect against devastating erosion. For those of us who call the region home, the Great Lakes forever shapes our way of life. It's where we recreate. It's where we do business. It's where we pass along the heritage of our region. Today, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton spoke at today's leadership press conference to discuss his opposition to H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, and his support for the bipartisan alternative, H.R. 19, the Lower Costs, More Cures Act. As the author of the historic 21st Century Cures Act, Upton expressed his concerns with how H.R. 3 would stifle innovation, leading to fewer life-saving cures and drugs. Click hereto view Upton's remarks. Full remarks: Well this week marks the third anniversary of the enactment of 21st Century Cures that President Obama signed. The bill of course passed the House 392-26, strongly bipartisan in both the House and Senate. And one of the things that, the main focal points of what it did was expedite the approval of drugs and devices, and now three years later we've seen some tremendous successes. I was with a young girl last week in a wheelchair who has SMA, that's spinal muscular atrophy, its often fatal for young children. She had been on a drug just barley for 15 days and already she was getting muscle, she was able to move her head back and forth for the first time in more than a decade. Last week, I met with some folks that we're very excited about. A new stage 3/stage 4 pancreatic cancer drug that has been enormously successful in the first number of trials and, because of Cures, if it is successful, could be the first drug that actually deals with this and gets to market years faster than perhaps it otherwise would have. We've seen some success on the Alzheimer's drugs, last week in USA today, the headline, Autism Research Takes a Step Forward. All of these happen because of what we did on 21st Century Cures. The Democratic bill, H.R. 3, would stifle the innovation, and whether it's the CEA or the CBO, they all talk about drugs that will not likely make it to market for years, slower than it otherwise would have. Our substitute would continue the innovation surge we have seen because of 21st Century Cures and be able to find the cures for the diseases that … | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The legislation is included as part of a broader bill aimed at preserving coastal communities and natural habitats, H.R. 729, the Coastal and Great Lakes Communities Enhancement Act. The final vote will happen this evening. Click here or the image above to watch Upton's remarks. Full remarks: I thank Mr. Quigley who just spoke as the two of us are the bipartisan sponsors of the Great Lakes Fisheries Authorization Act. We are glad it's part of this package. And I rise in support, Madam Speaker, today, for this package of bills to help protect our coasts and the Great Lakes. In the southwest there is a saying, don't mess with Texas. Well, as one that grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan there is an issue we have, too - don't mess with the Great Lakes. This issue is deeply personal. It's one of great importance to the nation. Our Great Lakes hold 18% of the world's fresh water supply, covers some 9,000 miles of shoreline, and this helps generate over $7 billion a year in sport and commercial fishing Industry alone. This bill would authorize the U.S. Geological Survey Great Lakes Science Center to conduct science and research activities to support fishery management decisions in the Great Lakes. Funds will be used to restore the loss of basic fishery science capabilities, accelerate the development of invasive species controls, and the restoration of native species and implement advanced autonomous and remote sensing technologies. Today, legislation introduced by U.S. Representatives Fred Upton (MI-06) and Mike Quigley (IL-05) to support fisheries within the Great Lakes Basin passed the House of Representatives as part of a broader bill aimed at preserving coastal communities and natural habitats. H.R. 729, the Coastal and Great Lakes Communities Enhancement Act, included the text of Quigley and Upton's bipartisan legislation, the Great Lakes Fishery Research Authorization (GLFRA) Act. The GLFRA Act was introduced to provide the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center with funding to conduct critical monitoring, scientific assessments, and research of fisheries between the United States and Canada that lie within the Great Lakes Basin. Michigan, the Great Lakes region, and the entire nation rely heavily on Great Lakes fisheries to support the economy and feed our families, Upton said. The GLFRA Act will provide the Great Lakes Science Center with the necessary funding and cutting-edge tools they need to help ensure our fisheries remain a strong economic driver for generations to come. I am grateful for the bipartisan efforts that helped make this legislation possible and am proud to see it pass the House. Over 35 million people depend on the Great Lakes for everything from drinking water and recreation, to fish and wildlife activities and commercial navigation. The passage of this legislation means that the Great Lakes Science Center will be able to protect this precious resource for those millions for years to come, said Quigley. For too long, the Great Lakes Science Center has been forced to rely on unreliable, piecemeal funding to support its mission. I am proud to have championed this legislation to ensure that the fishery industry continues to thrive. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, the leading Republican on the House Energy Subcommittee, today hosted Dr. Qingliu Wu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Paper Engineering at Western Michigan University, at the Energy and Environment Innovation Showcase in Washington, D.C. The event highlighted organizations from across the nation that are using innovative technologies to reduce emissions, tackle climate change, protect our environment, secure reliable and affordable energy, create American jobs, and strengthen our economy. Today we had a packed house with 18 companies, like DTE Biomass Energy from Ann Arbor, academic institutions, such as Western Michigan University from Kalamazoo, and other organizations to showcase their innovative work that is really making a positive impact on our environment and our economy, Upton said. Our planet is facing unique challenges, and we need bold ideas that address current and future risks while also maintaining reliable and affordable energy options for consumers. Today's presentations proved that innovation is the answer. With innovative, all of the above strategies, we can protect our environment, address our energy challenges, and strengthen our economy. Across the University and in multiple disciplines, WMU has a long history of scientific discovery and innovation designed to improve energy efficiency and to advance sustainability. "The showcase was a wonderful platform to highlightto government, industry and society at largeWMU's research into energy delivery and emissions reduction, Dr. Wu said. Michael Conaway and 158 Republican Members in sending a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, urging immediate consideration and passage of this vital trade agreement. The text of the letter follows: __ Dear Speaker Pelosi: The undersigned Republican Members strongly urge you to ensure that the House of Representatives takes up and passes the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement this year. With just two weeks remaining, the House has so far squandered the first session of the 116th Congress. Rather than working together to pass bipartisan measures that could be signed into law, House Democrats have instead obsessed over a partisan impeachment process of which the sole purpose is to overturn the decision of voters in the 2016 election. The little remaining time has largely been consumed by passing partisan messaging bills that have no chance of enactment, even in the case where common ground could easily have been found. Thankfully, it is not too late for House Democrats to do the right thing. For starters, the House should finally stop dithering on USMCA and pass this critically important trade agreement. Nearly every agriculture group in America has called on Congress to pass USMCA, which significantly improves trade relations with our two largest trading partners that together purchase about one-third of all U.S. agricultural exports. Under USMCA, U.S. agricultural exports alone are expected to increase by more than $2 billion annually, helping to build on the 325,000 American jobs that are already reliant on our nation’s exports to Mexico and Canada. We stand in strong opposition to any decision by the Canadian government to select or consider a permanent national repository for nuclear waste storage anywhere near the Great Lakes, wrote the lawmakers. This is a treasured natural resource each of our countries share and we urge you to stand with us to protect these waters for future generations. In November, the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved a bipartisan amendment introduced by Dingell and Upton expressing the sense of Congress that the governments of the United States and Canada should not allow permanent or long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel or other radioactive waste near the Great Lakes. A copy of the letter can be found linked here or below: Dear Prime Minister Trudeau: We write to you out of deep concern regarding reports that Canada is moving closer to selecting a permanent national repository for harmful nuclear waste along the shores of the Great Lakes. Allowing a permanent nuclear waste storage facility anywhere near the Great Lakes basin, for any amount of time, is a risk we cannot afford to take. The recent reporting also has us greatly concerned that the highest levels of radioactive waste would ultimately be stored at the proposed site. We know that there are other Members of Congress representing districts in the Great Lakes basin who are most concerned by this development and will certainly be joining with us in the days ahead. This is a grave concern. These waters have long united usthey should not divide us. In November, the Energy and Commerce Committee favorably advanced H.R. 2699, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2019, to the House for final consideration and it… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This endorsement demonstrates the overwhelming bipartisan support for this legislation as members in both chambers continue their work to reform and reauthorize the Higher Education Act. I'm thrilled to see bipartisan, bicameral excitement for the College Transparency Act continue to grow. It has long been a priority of mine to ensure students and families have the necessary tools to make informed decisions about their future, said Rep. Mitchell (MI-10). Currently, you can find more information about the reliability of a washing machine you're thinking of buying than you can find out about the likelihood of success from an educational major at a college or university, and that's just wrong. That is why I introduced the College Transparency Act, which would give students a much fuller picture when deciding whether or where to attend college or take out loans. Working with Rep. Josh Harder to gain the Problem Solvers Caucus's support is a meaningful step in advancing this legislation toward the goal of seeing it signed into law. The Problem Solvers Caucus is a bipartisan group in Congress comprising 48 members equally divided between Democrats and Republicans who are committed to forging bipartisan cooperation on key issues. On Tuesday night, he attended the first meeting of the Save Minor League Baseball Task Force on Capitol Hill. The task force was formed after a proposal by Major League Baseball that would eliminate the affiliation between 42 minor league teamsand their major league clubs was reported in the national media. No Michigan teams are on the proposedlistofthose to have their affiliations eliminated. However, Congressman Moolenaar is working for baseball fans in mid and northern Michigan who are concerned their teams could be affected in the future. We have outstanding minor league teams in Michigan who do tremendous charitable work in their communities and provide a fun and affordable entertainment experience for families. Their partnership with Major League Baseball is exciting for their communities and their fans, and I hope teams in Michigan and across the nation will be able to keep their affiliations, said Moolenaar. Congressman John Moolenaar, wearing a Great Lakes Loons'uniform, signs a baseball for young fans at the 2015 Congressional Baseball Game. Moolenaar also spoke on Tuesday night at the launch event for the task force. Hisremarks were covered by Roll Call, a Capitol Hill publication, which isexcerpted below. Roll Call: Rep. John Moolenaarhas fond memories of the opening of Dow Diamond, the ballpark that is hometo the Class A Great Lakes Loons. I can still remember when the field was built, and they had the opening day. I asked the general manager, you know, are any of these players that are on the team going to make it to the big leagues, the Republican from Michigan said Tuesday. I remember him saying, well, watch this pitcher. He's only going to be with us for a little while. The pitcher? It was three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. The legislation would allow eligible doctors to participate in a sliding scale loan repayment program for their school loans that would incentivize them to work in the places with the most severe shortages of physicians. Congressman John Moolenaar made the following statement on sponsoring the legislation: Residents in mid and northern Michigan sometimes have to travel long distances to meet with a doctor because there is not one in their area. It is my hope that this legislation will result in better care for patients, with more doctors living and working closer to those they care for in our rural communities where they are needed most. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

| https://moolenaar.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/pelosi-house-democrats-push-impeachment-instead-michigan-priorities | Pelosi, House Democrats Push Impeachment Instead of Michigan Priorities | 2019-12-05 | 2019 | 2019-12 | Republican | House | MI | John Moolenaar | M001194 | moolenaar.house.gov | legacy | Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that House Democrats will continue their partisan push for the impeachment of President Donald Trump despite opposition from independents and unmoved public opinion following months of House hearings on the topic. Today's announcement also contradicts Pelosi's March 2019 statement to The Washington Post when she said, impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path because it divides the country. Pelosi's self-described country-dividing announcement today also comes as she continues to delay a House vote on President Trump's trade agreement with Mexico and Canada. The agreement was signed by the leaders of those three countries more than a year ago. However, Speaker Pelosi has refused to put it up for a vote despite a July 26, 2019 letter from members of her own party urging a vote by the end of the year. With two weeks to go on the House calendar, no vote has been scheduled and Speaker Pelosi recently said a vote may not happen this year. Congressman John Moolenaar made the following statement on today's announcement: Democrats have wanted to impeach President Trump since he took office instead of working with him to help our country. Today, they continue to push for impeachment while putting the real concerns of hardworking Michigan residents on the backburner. Speaker Pelosi has not scheduled a vote on a new trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that will help Michigan farmers and create jobs in manufacturing. There is also no timetable on finalizing 2020 funding for our men and women serving overseas, the construction of a new lock at the Soo Locks, or the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The delays and inaction on these key prioritiescreates uncertainty for those serving our nation, and these vital issues deserve to be finished instead of House Democrats' partisan push for impeachment. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | ||

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today voted for and the House passed the bipartisan TRACED Act, an effort to put an end to illegal robocalls in southwest Michigan and across the country. The legislation S. 151 - now heads to President Donald Trump's desk to be signed into law. I have been part of the effort to stop illegal, pesky, and annoying robocalls all year because enough is enough, Upton said. It's an issue that impacts families, hospitals, seniors, and Americans across the country. Robocalls fill up hospital lines, try to steal our personal information and security, and threaten our well-being and sanity. Already 54 billion robocalls have been placed in 2019, averaging 164 calls per person including more than 203 million robocalls in our district alone. I'm glad to see this bipartisan effort advance through the House and Senate and hope to see President Trump sign it quickly. Specifically, the TRACED Act will: Implement a nationwide caller authentication system so consumers can again trust that the number they see on their caller ID is actually the person calling them. Allow consumers to block unlawful calls in a consistent and transparent way, at no extra charge. Ensures that law enforcement and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have the tools, information, and incentives to go after robocallers that break the law. The House had previously passed H.R. 3375, the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, in July by a vote of 429-3. Upton was a cosponsor of that bill and was a vocal leader for the bill's passage. The TRACED Act is a bipartisan compromise between the House and Senate, and it passed the House unanimously. In support of the tart cherry industry, Congressman Bergman led eight Members of the Michigan Congressional delegation in sending written testimony to the ITC panel. The Members of Congress noted that,"Michigan has a proud and extensive history of being a leader in the agriculture industry. Fruit crops are an especially important part of the state’s economy, and Michigan cherries are known throughout the state and nation – in fact Traverse City, Michigan is known as the Cherry Capital of the world. In addition, the five counties located in and around Traverse City are the leading producers of the annual tart cherry crop in the United States." The joint testimony highlights disturbing trends in Turkey's dumping of highly subsidized cherry products into the United States' market, noting the"dramatic increase from over 413,000 pounds in 2016 to 1.5 million pounds by the end of 2018."The Commerce Department issued an affirmative preliminary countervailing duty (CVD) determination of 204% on September 23, 2019. On that same day, Commerce also issued an affirmative preliminary anti-dumping duty determination of a range of 541 – 643%. You can read the full written testimony HERE. In response to the Congressional testimony provided today, Phil Korson, President of the Cherry Marketing Institute said, "Fair trade is critically important to Michigan’s Cherry Growers and we appreciate the leadership and support from Michigan’s Congressional Delegation" Rep. We also saw stopped by Adrian College and discussed the school's innovative partnership with Google that prepares students for in-demand careers. With a growing economy, it is critical to offer several pathways to the more than 7 million jobs that are currently unfilled. Passing the USMCA As part of Secretary Scalia's tour of our district, we also met with workers at a manufacturing facility in Jackson, and held a roundtable with local education and business leaders. Enacting better trade policies like the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement(USMCA)will boost Michigan's manufacturing and agriculture sectors and continue the economic momentum we have seen in recent years. An Update on Impeachment After another week of partisan impeachment hearings, what have we learned? Not much at all. Certainly nothing close to justify impeachment. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) this week received approval from the U.S. House of Representatives in a 314-95 vote. The House on Nov. 18 approved the Investor Protection and Capital Markets Fairness Act, H.R. 4344, which Rep. Huizenga cosponsored in September with bill sponsor U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams (D-UT) to help the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) hold criminals accountable and help Main Street investors who are victims of fraud recover their financial losses. The latest report from the SEC found that more than $1.1 billion swindled from investors through fraudulent activity is unable to be recovered because of a 2017 Supreme Court decision, Rep. Huizenga said on Tuesday. The congressman added that H.R. 4344 strikes a delicate balance to solve this by ensuring the SEC has the necessary tools to go after bad actors and prevent these sophisticated fraudsters from keeping the money they have stolen from our teachers, military service personnel, seniors, and religious-affiliated groups. According to the text of the bill, the SEC would be allowed, in any action or proceeding it brought or instituted under any provision of the securities laws, to seek recovery in the amount of any unjust enrichment obtained as a result of the act or practice with respect to which the Commission is bringing such an action or proceeding, as well as injunctions, including officer and director bars. The U.S. Senate on Nov. 19 received H.R. 4344 and referred the measure to the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee for consideration. U.S. Representatives Fred Upton (R-MI) and Diana DeGette (D-CO) today released their initial vision for their landmark Cures 2.0 legislation and issued a call to action for ideas and other feedback. The first installment of 21st Century Cures was signed into law nearly three years ago, and already, there are better ways to prevent and screen cancer, an improved understanding of the human brain, and improvements in the field of regenerative medicine. A record number of new drugs have been approved including new generics which have helped lower health care costs for millions of Americans. Cures 2.0 will aim to improve caredelivery and look at how it is possible to modernize coverage and access to life-saving cures. We are so proud of what the first effort of 21st Century Cures has been able to achieve in such a short amount of time, but one thing we have heard from listening to folks across the nation is that we need to do more to promote access to these life-saving cures, Upton and DeGette said. There are still too many patients without a treatment, and we need to do everything we can to help them now. Mirroring a similar process as their previous effort, Upton and DeGette have been working in a truly bipartisan, transparent, and collaborative manner, putting patients and their needs at the center of all discussions. They have begun meeting with and gathering input from stakeholders and other experts. In their call to action document, Upton and DeGette requested input and feedback to be submitted by December 16, 2019. Currently, laws addressing anti-dumping and countervailing duties measure injury based on national, year-round totals. This full-year orientation denies U.S. seasonal and perishable agricultural producers fair and effective access to import relief remedies. When Michigan farmers have a level playing field, they can compete with anyone in the world, said Congressman Bill Huizenga. Current federal law fails to provide seasonal, perishable, and specialty crop growers with adequate means to bring forward claims against illegal trade practices being used by other nations. The Defending Domestic Produce Production Act will increase the ability of Michigan farmers, especially asparagus, blueberry, and cherry growers, to petition the Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission to investigate illegal subsidies and dumping of fruits and vegetables in the U.S. market. The Defending Domestic Produce Production Act would recognize the unique circumstances of seasonal fruit and vegetable producers who are directly harmed by the practices and subsidies utilized by Mexico, Central American, and South American nations. Congressman Huizenga is the first member of the Michigan delegation to sign on to the Defending Domestic Produce Production Act introduced by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) in the Senate and Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) in the House. The bill currently has 32 cosponsors. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today issued the following statement after the full Energy and Commerce Committee voted by voice to advance H.R. 2699 - the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2019 - which would assist in the resolution of the pending permanent repository license. The NWPAA would restart the long-stalled process of licensing the repository at Yucca Mountain. Upton is an original cosponsor of the legislation. Upton and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) also offered a bipartisan amendment to the bill, which expressed a sense of congress to disallow the permanent or long-term storage of nuclear waste near the Great Lakes by the governments of the United States or Canada. The amendment passed unanimously. Nuclear fuel and other high-level waste is currently stranded at 121 sites in 39 states around the country, so the bottom line, we need a permanent solution for safely disposing spent nuclear fuel. The bipartisan legislation the committee advanced today is a critical step, Upton said. I'm also proud that my colleagues understand the importance of protecting the Great Lakes which account for more than 20 percent of the world's freshwater supply. An estimated 40 million people depend on the Great Lakes for a water source. Today's amendment sends a clear message: Congress is united against storing nuclear waste in or near the Great Lakes. H.R. 2699 was introduced by U.S. Reps. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) and John Shimkus (R-IL). Specifically, the legislation: Assists in the resolution of the pending permanent repository license, which will allow the formal licensing process to determine if the Yucca Mountain site can be licensed and constructed; Reforms a broken financing mechanism to protect ratepayers and assure the Department of Energy (DOE) has adequate funding to construct and operate a multi-generational infrastructure project; Directs DOE to move forward with a temporary storage program to consolidate spent nuclear fuel from sites with a decommissioned rea… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Lets stop playing politics with pipelines. | 2019-11-19 | 2019 | 2019-11 | Republican | House | MI | Fred Upton | U000031 | upton.house.gov | legacy | WASHINGTON, DC Energy Subcommittee Republican Leader Fred Upton (R-MI) delivered the following opening remarks today at a full committee markup, expressing his disappointment in the new PHMSA reauthorization bill that Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman DeFazio and Chairman Pallone just released late Friday night. Remarks as Prepared for Delivery Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Today, we have a number of bills before us, but I would like to focus my comments on the new PHMSA reauthorization bill that Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman DeFazio and Chairman Pallone just released late Friday night. I am disappointed it has come to this. The Administration is opposed, and it doesn't stand a chance in the Senate the way it is drafted today. After months of bipartisan negotiations, the House Majority has decided to go it alone, and jam through a new partisan bill chocked full of riders and carve outs for special interest groups. We had a deal on 98% of the package, and then negotiations stopped. This is what's at stake. Legislation to protect public safety and the environment from pipeline accidents has always been a bipartisan issue, beginning with the Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968. For over twenty years under divided governments, we put our differences aside and passed these bills by voice vote here in this Committee. The Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002 passed by voice vote. The Pipeline Inspection, Protection, Enforcement, and Safety Act of 2006 passed by voice vote. The Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty and Job Creation Act of 2011 passed by voice vote. The PIPES Act of 2016, the most recent reauthorization, also passed by voice vote. Abandoning our strong history of bipartisanship is irresponsible and reckless. Lives are at stake. Let's stop playing politics with pipelines. As I've said many times, I have three major priorities for Pipelines Safety Reauthorization. First, we need to make sure PHMSA and the States have the resources and the inspectors they need to do thei… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Improving and upgrading infrastructure including water and waste disposal systems is one of my priorities because it's critical to the well-being of our communities. These funds will allow Mayville to evaluate and rehabilitate its sewer system, which is more than 50 years old. I am glad to see the USDA Office of Rural Development's announcement and look forward to seeing the new infrastructure improvements it will enable. Award Details: Village of Mayville Loans: $5,241,000 Grants: $1,919,000 Project Description: This Rural Development investment will be used to make improvements to the village of Mayville's sewer system. The collection and treatment system was constructed prior to 1970. In 2015, the state of Michigan awarded a Stormwater Asset Management grant to Mayville to evaluate their sewer system, which identified several areas that needed to be rehabilitated. The proposed project includes: 235 feet of cured-in-place pipelining, 1,285 feet of sewer replacement, manhole repairs, the replacement of two pump stations, upgrades to one pump station, the rehabilitation of lagoon cells 1 and 2, and the construction of lagoon cell 3. The sewer system serves 333 residential and 75 commercial users. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This includes helping seniors receive payments for missing Social Security checks, as well as veterans who are not receiving the VA benefits owed to them for serving our nation. The office also helps those who are receiving unfair treatment from the IRS, including owedrefundsbeing held by the government. As a result of this work, Congressman Moolenaar's staff recently completed work that put the office over $4 million in returned funds the federal government owed to constituents. The total includes work that has been done since Congressman Moolenaar took office in January 2015 through November of this year. It is an honor to serve as a voice in Congress for my constituents and to work on their behalf when they have issues with the federal government. My office and I can help cut through the red tape, and I hope constituents in mid and northern Michigan will reach out to us when they need assistance with a federal agency. It's been especially meaningful to help so many of our veterans receive the benefits they were promised for serving our country, and that's been one of my biggest priorities since taking office, said Moolenaar. Only 13 House Republicans supported the bill Friday after the White House budget office announced its opposition to the bill Thursday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) also said Thursday he would not take up the measure, all but officially killing the House bill. Congress is expected to extend Ex-Im funding in a broader measure to avoid a shutdown, which should keep it running through mid-December. But the House's failure to pass a viable bill marks the latest blow to bipartisan efforts to reboot the controversial export subsidizer. Let's not waste the people's time here in the House of Representatives with a needless debate on something that's kind of going nowhere, said Rep. Patrick McHenry (N.C.), ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee. Let's actually work on something that could take us somewhere. We had a bipartisan bill. Sadly the majority walked away from it. Hopes were for an Ex-Im overhaul in 2019 after the retirement of Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), the former Financial Services panel chairman who helped briefly shut down the bank in 2015. Established in 1934 to subsidize foreign sales of U.S. goods, the Ex-Im Bank operated with strong bipartisan support for most of its history. But Republicans led by Hensarling successfully blocked the bank's funding from July through December 2015, shuttering Ex-Im in opposition to GOP leadership. With Hensarling out of the way, House Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and McHenry were clear to negotiate a bill to expand Ex-Im's charter and quell GOP concerns of crony capitalism. If we fail to reauthorize the bank, American businesses will be harmed, and thousands of jobs will be lost, Waters said Thursday in a speech on the House floor. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, on Sunday presented a Purple Heart Medal to U.S. Army Specialist Philip Damico of Benton Harbor, Mich. Damico was drafted in 1967 and served in the Army in Vietnam until 1969 when he was injured by an explosive. It was such an honor to share this moment with a Patriot and a real American hero Philip Damico, as well as several members of his family, Upton said. Specialist Damico served his country with distinction, risked his life to protect our freedoms, and did it with unflinching bravery. The Purple Heart Medal is such a small token of appreciation compared to everything he did to defend our way of life. We will forever be grateful to him and his family for their sacrifices. I'm grateful for Fred taking the time to meet my family and me and present the Purple Heart Medal, Damico said. It was a special day for my wife, our kids and their spouses, and our grandkids. But it's also important that we always remember and honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home, as well as their families. ThePurple Heart Medalis awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy. Often described as the military's oldest medal, George Washington created it in 1782. To mark the bicentennial of Washington's birth, in 1932, the Purple Heart was revived by Presidential Executive Order. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today cosponsored the Threat Assessment, Prevention, and Safety (TAPS) Act originally introduced by U.S. Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX). The TAPS Act H.R. 838 - is bipartisan legislation that aims to create safer communities by providing states and local entities the resources needed to utilize behavioral threat assessment and management units. Those who commit violent acts often show some sort of warning or pattern of concerning behavior. This legislation would provide our law enforcement the tools to track down those warnings so we can stop violent acts before they occur. For decades, the U.S. Secret Services has used behavioral threat assessment and management to protect our national leaders and foreign dignitaries. It's been proven to work, and now we should use it to protect our schools, families, and local communities, Upton said. Our nation has witnessed too many violent crimes lately most recently yesterday at a school in California. Enough is enough. This bill is a small part of a bigger solution to help save lives, and I hope to see it passed through the Congress and signed by the President. The TAPS Act is currently co-sponsored by 156 members and has wide support from a number of stakeholders and other groups, including the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the National Fraternal Order of Police, and the National Sheriffs' Association. The money would go towards five pilot sites around the country. Huizenga says he borrowed the "Multi-share model from Access Health, a Muskegon non-profit that combines individual, employer and educational institution, the sponsoring health care organization and federal funds to come up with the best coverage plan for uninsured people. The program is intended to reduce the number of uninsured through a hospital-led community-based coverage option, and test the feasibility of supporting Medicaid recipients transitioning from part-time employment to full-time employment by ensuring that health care remains stable and supports economic independence. Huizenga says the program would target distressed economic areas and help people whose income disqualifies them from Medicaid. The use of this coverage bridge ensures that low-income earners are not disincentivized from leaving Medicaid to seek higher income employment opportunities, Huizenga said. Huizenga says the pilot program would provide protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Huizenga said in a statement that policy makers should be looking for ways to, increase the well-being of Americans, promote upward mobility, and improve outcomes for families. The Community Multi-share Coverage Program Act achieves these objectives by building upon the success we have seen right here in West Michigan. By using a unique approach to deliver quality health care at affordable prices to populations that are either underserved or uninsured, this West Michigan inspired legislation can improve health and financial security while helping more people climb the ladder of opportunity and achieve success." U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced 43 Michigan counties as primary natural disaster areas, including Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, and 31 additional counties as contiguous disaster counties, including Kalamazoo and Van Buren. Following excessive rain, flooding, and extreme temperatures earlier this year, Upton spearheaded abipartisan letter urging support for Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's USDA SecretarialDisaster Designation request for the state of Michigan This disaster designation approved by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue provides vital assistance for farmers across the Sixth District and our state as they look to rebound from a tough season, Upton said. When I listened to and met with folks during my farm tour in July, it was apparent our farmers and producers needed help. The extreme weather we saw earlier this year was simply devastating. I commend the USDA for approving this request and look forward to continuing to work with our ag community to address the challenges they face. Earlier this year, Upton visited a number of farms in southwest Michigan to see the damage from the extreme weather firsthand and to raise awareness of the need for the disaster designation. According to the USDA, a Secretarial disaster designation makes farm operators in primary counties and those counties contiguous to such primary counties eligible to be considered for certain assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA)Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of a Secretarial disaster declaration to apply for emergency loans. Bergman passed the U.S. House of Representatives. H.R. 4162 the GI Bill Planing Act of 2019 passed by a vote of 408 to 0, and H.R. 4477 the Reducing High Risk to Veterans and Veterans Services Act was passed unanimously by voice vote. Rep. Bergman issued the following release: Rep. Bergman stated, "I'm thankful that on the day after Veterans day, my colleagues came together to pass two of my bills through the House. Furthering our mission of keeping our nation’s promises to those who have served, this legislation will help new enlistees in the Armed Services save money by better understanding their future education benefits, and provide oversight to the VA efforts to implement recommended changes to programs that are highly susceptible to fraud, waste, and mismanagement." Today, a small and further declining number of student Veterans use the 1984 Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) to earn a degree. A 97% majority instead choose the newer, more effective Post 9/11 GI Bill. However, about 70% of military recruits still make the decision to keep their MGIB eligibility and pay a mandatory $1,200 for this benefit which they will likely never use. Recruits are asked to make this consequential decision within the first two weeks of boot camp, despite being mentally and physically fatigued. The GI Bill Planning Act would give enlistees six months - instead of just two weeks- to decide whether to pay the $1200 or opt out of their MGIB benefit. Additionally, the bill responsibly ends new enlistee enrollments in the outdated MGIB by October 2029. While the Montgomery GI Bill has helped millions of veterans since 1984, it is time to simplify benefits and help recruits be more informed in their education benefits down the road. Additionally, Ranking Member Jack Bergman co-led the introduction of H.R. 4477 with Chairman Chris Pappas (D-NH). This bill requires the VA to submit plans to Congress on how it will address issues and recommendations from the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO… | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:43:09Z |

As your representative in Congress, it is my duty to uphold our commitments to America's veterans. It is important to me to continue working to improve access to health care, employment opportunities, education, housing and more. Over the years, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has faced significant mismanagement challenges that have prevented timely access to essential services. With the launch of the MISSION Act this year, along with other new accountability measures, our goal is to reform and streamline the system to better serve veterans. The MISSION Act expands options for health care, as well as opens the doors for partnering with communities to limit wait times for critical health needs. When service-members return from the battlefield, we need to help make their transition back into civilian life as seamless as possible. Thanks to the enactment of the Forever GI Bill in 2017, veterans' access to lifelong educational and workforce development opportunities is stronger than ever. This law eliminates the 15-year time restriction for receiving GI Bill benefits, providing future recipients the ability to use their benefits at any point. The heartbreaking trend of veteran suicides also requires immediate action. Current data indicates that more than 20 of our nation's veterans and active-duty service-members take their own lives every day. The need to confront the unseen wounds of war is overwhelming. This year, the House has passed several bills focused on suicide prevention, including the Support for Suicide Prevention Coordinators Act, which will help ensure the VA has the tools it needs to boost mental health support. Another encouraging legislative development is the recent passage of the Homeless Veteran Families Act. This bipartisan bill will adjust the VA's per diem payment calculation for homeless veterans to include funding for minor dependents. In fact, House Democrats are so determined to undercut the president's agenda that they refuse to recognize the national security vulnerabilities on our southwest border. We saw these vulnerabilities firsthand as part of a trip last weekend to the Rio Grande Valley, the most trafficked part of the border. The Rio Grande Valley was at the heart of the spring migrant crisis, accounting for nearly half of the families and children law enforcement apprehended in the past year. To paint a fuller picture of how cartels, gangs and other bad actors are taking advantage of weaknesses in the Rio Grande Valley, here are a few recent examples. In only three days last week, law enforcement seized nearly 1,000 pounds of marijuana worth over a quarter-million dollars. In a five-day period last week, agents interdicted more than $3 million worth of cocaine. Border Patrol agents arrested known members of the MS-13 and the 18th Street Gang in the sector earlier this fall. The area is also a hotbed for human smuggling. Last month, agents stopped four separate smuggling attempts, catching a total of 28 illegal immigrants, including five Chinese nationals. These are only examples of what law enforcement was able to accomplish. Securing the Rio Grande Valley is one of President Trump's top priorities. Fortunately, we're making progress in achieving that goal. The administration is in the process of building more than 100 miles of a border wall system in the region, updating inadequate barriers and filling gaps in existing wall all making it harder to cross undetected. Our group was among the first people to see new construction in areas where no wall existed before. This new wall is made of steel bollards filled with concrete and designed to make it extremely difficult to defeat. It's also equipped with sensors and cameras. The Community Multi-share Coverage Program Act achieves these objectives by building upon the success we have seen right here in West Michigan. By using a unique approach to deliver quality health care at affordable prices to populations that are either underserved or uninsured, this West Michigan inspired legislation can improve health and financial security while helping more people climb the ladder of opportunity and achieve success. Multi-share models provide an alternative, non-insurance, form of coverage that has demonstrated the ability to reduce demand for Medicaid by stabilizing and improving the health of a population traditionally on the cusp of Medicaid eligibility. CMCP models have also demonstrated community-wide economic benefit. Local employers have reduced health care cost-shifting, increased productivity and increased employee retention. The model's emphasis on preventive and chronic care, combined with intentional coordination with community employment resources, reduces the financial burden of the community's uninsured population on state and local budgets while supporting individuals toward employment. The Community Multi-Share Coverage Program Act is intended to: Reduce the number of uninsured through a hospital-led community-based coverage option; Test the feasibility of supporting Medicaid recipients transitioning from part-time employment to full-time employment by ensuring that health care remai… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Additional FY 2021 funding will be used to begin upstream channel deepening, as well as continued design work for the new chamber and upstream approach walls. Rep. Bergman stated, “I’m grateful for the bipartisan support we’ve garnered for this project. Great Lakes Legislators have rallied around the need for a new Poe-sized Lock, and the Trump Administration and Army Corps have been incredible partners to see this project through. We won’t take anything for granted until this project is completed, and I’m proud to have such strong support behind the First District’s number one infrastructure priority.” The Legislators wrote, “The Soo Locks, a single point of failure in a multi-billion dollar supply chain, is a critically important infrastructure project for the Great Lakes Region and the entire nation. From our military and maritime industries to our steel and automotive production, American manufacturing relies on the health of Soo Locks, which currently transits over 80 million tons of commodities each year. Aging infrastructure at the Locks leaves our supply chains vulnerable to any unplanned or unexpected outage of the Poe Lock.” The letter in its entirety can be read HERE. In March of 2019, President Trump included $75.3 million in his FY2020 budget to start construction at the Locks complex. This was a historical moment for the project, marking the first time a President has included a funding request for the construction of a new Poe-sized lock. Both the Senate and House Appropriations Committees included the $75.3 million funding in their FY2020 plans. In June of 2018, the U.S. Army Corps released the long-awaited Director's report which Congressman Bergman worked to expedite, fund and complete. This report reflected a realistic picture of the enormous value and benefit of the Soo Locks. Walberg joined a congressional delegation that toured facilities in Texas Rio Grande Valley Sector and met with personnel from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "Despite the impeachment theater in Washington, there are pressing issues that we need to stay focused on as policymakers. Securing the border and fixing our broken immigration system are certainly among them," said Walberg. "During my trip to the southern border, I was able to receive detailed briefings and see for myself the ongoing challenges there. I was impressed with the professionalism, commitment, and compassion of our border security personnel. Congress needs to do its job and ensure our dedicated border agents have the necessary resources to address the influx of migrants, promote a humane and lawful system, and keep our border secure and country safe. We cannot afford to ignore the situation on the border any longer." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:43:09Z |

One day after she presided over a vote on House Democrats' partisan impeachment inquiry, Pelosi told Bloomberg Newstoday that a vote on President Donald Trump's USMCA trade agreement with Mexico and Canada might have to wait until2020. It has now been nearly a year since the agreement was signed on November 30, 2018, by President Trump and the leaders of Mexico and Canada. Congressman John Moolenaar made the following statement on today's news: The economy continues to be strong, with more new jobs and wages rising. In the district, I see Help Wanted' signs everywhere I go and I know our manufacturers are looking for hardworking people who are trained in the skilled trades. The economy could be doing even better though if the House passed the USMCA trade agreement. So it is unfortunate that Speaker Pelosi said today there may not even be a vote until next year. This agreement was reached nearly a year ago and there should be a vote soon, but it's clear that impeachment is a more important priority for Democrats than passing anew agreement that will benefit Michigan farmers and manufacturers." | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Adding insult to injury, this resolution allows this partisan process to continue by giving Democrats, specifically Adam Schiff, the ability to deny Republicans access to potential witnesses. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) issued the following statement after opposing House Res. 660: After closely reviewing the text of House Resolution 660 and listening to my constituents, I voted no on today's resolution. The resolution itself is a little inside baseball, but as I view it, the Democrats appear to be trying to put the genie back in the bottle after they already started this investigation which has only featured closed-door hearings and testimonies available to a select number of members. I have been absolutely clear that from the beginning I wanted to see an open, transparent, and fact-based process because I have been troubled by what has come out. Legitimate questions remain to be answered. But I have been frustrated by how closed-off the process has been so far. This is not how this is supposed to work in any committee, and I believe the resolution we voted on today would fail to put an end to the lack of transparency we have seen throughout this investigation. Today's vote also only serves as further distraction from working on important, bipartisan issues. This week was wasted talking all about this vote even though it simply reaffirms the current broken process - and now there are only 16 legislative days scheduled for the remainder of the year, leaving little time to do the nation's business. I believe that it is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time, and I will continue to fight for solutions that address the biggest issues facing the folks of southwest Michigan, including lowering prescription drug costs, funding our national defense, and strengthening our economy. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The resolution we will vote on today is too little, too late, and allows a tainted process to continue without guaranteeing members of Congress full access to interview transcripts, affording the minority equal rights to call witnesses, or providing the Administration with full due process rights. It was a sweeping package of bipartisan bills, more than 70, that we passed in response to the opioid crisis a nationwide epidemic that has taken the lives of too many of our friends and loved ones. Within the SUPPORT Act are two bills I coauthored with Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, one of which addresses proper disposal methods of painkillers following end of life care. The second one, Jessie's Law, helps ensure that medical professionals have access to a consenting patient's addiction history in order to make fully informed care and treatment decisions. Following the one-year anniversary, it should be emphasized that this landmark law marked the continuation not the conclusion of a unified effort in Congress, in partnership and coordination with local communities, to battle the opioid crisis. Every day, an estimated 130 people from all walks of life die from an opioid overdose. The heartbreaking reality of these statistics remains personal for me after a good friend from Michigan lost his battle with addiction late last year. This fight goes on and we must renew our work to identify more solutions to help those in or on the path to recovery. Last month, the Trump Administration announced $1.8 billion in grants, including $28 million for Michigan, to help increase medication-assisted treatment and mental health resources. They are also stepping up efforts to seize illicit drugs and stop them from flowing into our country and communities. Particularly troubling is the rise of fentanyl, a synthetic drug 50 times the potency of heroin which in 2017 contributed to nearly 30,000 overdose fatalities. In addition to significant legislation and investments at the federal level, we need to boost community-focused initiatives as well. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today joined with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to introduce the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, landmark legislation which aims to address the shortage of workers available in the U.S. agriculture industry by helping build a legal and reliable workforce. This bipartisan bill - introduced by U.S. Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) would provide agricultural workers an opportunity to earn legal status through continued agricultural employment, improve the H-2A visa program, and establish a mandatory E-Verify for the agriculture industry. Under the legislation, a new stringent employment-based program would be created for our current agricultural workforce, requiring significant past and future work commitments, to ensure the stability of American agriculture. Furthermore, as part of its improvements to the H-2A visa program, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act creates year-round access to the H-2A program for dairy and other agricultural sectors that are facing labor shortages but have been unable to utilize the program. Without this legislation, year-round agriculture does not have access to a legal immigrant workforce. As I have listened to local farmers across southwest Michigan and the nation, labor shortages are one of the most significant challenges they face year after year, Upton said. American farmers feed the world, and for our farms to effectively produce quality agricultural products, we need to ensure there is a reliable workforce for all farms. That means we need real ag labor reform now that is fair and actually works for all concerned, including growers, producers, workers, and consumers. For more than three decades our agriculture labor laws have failed to address the needs of American farmers we are now on the cusp of changing that, thanks to leaders like Fred Upton in Congress, Jim Byrum, President of the Michigan Agri-Business Association, said. The letter comes in advance of a scheduled House vote on H.Res 660, which continues the secretive process and falls short of basic standards of fairness. “For more than a month, the House’s impeachment inquiry has been conducted entirely behind closed doors. While the resolution, H.Res 660, attempts to bring a veneer of transparency to the proceedings, it falls far short and instead continues to undermine the bedrock principle of due process,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter. “As members of the Michigan delegation who do not sit on your self-determined impeachment inquiry committees—Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Oversight, or Foreign Affairs—we have been prevented vital access and material shared in the process. As a result, our constituents have been left in the dark.” The full text of the letter is below and a PDF can be downloaded here.
