The comment period ends January 17, 2014, and a listing decision is due by March 30, 2014. “The Fish and Wildlife Service worked for several months with the five states that would be impacted by a listing of the lesser prairie chicken, and endorsed their balanced plan to conserve the species and protect jobs,” Pearce said. “I applaud them for taking a serious approach to this important issue, and giving us the opportunity to let our voices be heard. I encourage all New Mexicans to submit their comments to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and tell them know why you support this plan.” More information on the plan can be found at this website:http://www.fws.gov/coloradoes/Lesser_parairie_chicken/index.html . I have long called on Congress, the American people, and this administration to demand better of its agencies. The federal government MUST be held accountable for its actions. I urge my colleagues in the House and the Senate to come together and pass the USA FREEDOM Act, which mandates the NSA and other intelligence agencies once again comply with the laws of our nation, especially the Constitution.” Pearce is an original cosponsor of the USA FREEDOM Act, which would overhaul and restore the USA PATRIOT Act to its original intent by implementing major reforms to significantly rein in the NSA and other agencies from spying on Americans. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This year’s National Defense Authorization Act provides the funds that our men and women in uniform need. It also includes key language to protect White Sands so that its vital national security mission can continue. I am proud to vote for this important legislation, and stand by to assist our servicemen and women in every way I can.” The bill, which passed the House with strong bipartisan support, included an amendment introduced by Rep. Pearce to protect White Sands Missile Range and its mission. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The proposal directly impacts New Mexican families by reducing New Mexico’s share of receipts from commercial activity on federal lands—money that we rely on for schools and roads. This budget does nothing to reduce our national debt. Our nation spends nearly a trillion more a year than we collect, but this proposal does not have any productive deficit reduction. The people of southern New Mexico sent me to Washington to rein in our national debt—this is not the solution they asked for.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

(December 11, 2013) – Late Tuesday evening, budget conferees announced that a deal had been made on a federal budget, which includes a provision that would reduce the states’ share of mineral royalty payments from 50 percent (required under the Mineral Leasing Act) to 48 percent. This will cost New Mexico $95.5 million over the next ten years. “Since the 1970s, states and the federal government have split mineral royalty payments 50-50,” said U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce. “These cuts are not pocket change to the West. New Mexico schools and infrastructure projects depend on these payments, and losing out on nearly $100 million that is rightfully ours will only harm our communities. In 2008, states were asked to take a temporary two percent cut of their share of mineral royalty payments. This was supposed to be a one-year deal, but one-year extensions kept being included as appropriations riders each year. Now, this budget deal includes a ten-year extension of this practice without concern for the impact that this will have on the West for the next decade. “The Federal Government is telling us that these cuts will pay for administrative costs to manage the mineral leases, but they have been managing the administrative costs for decades without taking additional millions from states,” Pearce continued. “Imagine if the federal government took control of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, took 50 percent of its $4.1 billion in net revenue for 2012, and then decided to take another $82 million on top of that to cover administrative costs. New York and New Jersey wouldn’t stand for it, but that is exactly what the federal government is doing to the West. People in the West will continue to raise objections to a federal government that continues to exploit the resources and people of our states.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

All three bills are a part of the House’s strategy to responsibly develop our domestic resources in a responsible manner. “These three bills will play a key role in improving American energy security through safe, time-tested means,” said Pearce. “Hydraulic fracturing is a safe, proven method for energy development. These bills will expedite the process for application approvals after environmental reviews, and will deliver a shot in the arm to an already growing energy sector that supports over 100,000 good-paying jobs in New Mexico. Our livelihoods are dependent on these industries and the royalty and tax payments that they bring into our coffers keep our schools open. It is vital that the Senate act on these bipartisan bills.” HR 1965 requires the Department of the Interior to approve or deny an application to drill on federal lands within 30 days. If the Secretary has not made a decision on the application by the end of the 60 day period, the application is approved unless environmental reviews are incomplete. HR 2728 ensures that the main point of regulation for hydraulic fracturing remains primarily at the state level, in addition to the 8 federal environmental laws that currently regulate it. Our states successfully regulated this technology for over 60 years. President Obama’s own Secretary of the Interior stated clearly this year that hydraulic fracturing “has been done safely for decades.” Former BLM Director Bob Abbey and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson have made similar comments. HR 1900 imposes deadlines federal agencies reviewing natural gas pipeline applications, which serves to expedite the review process. Earlier this year, Pearce submitted an amendment which was attached to the Farm Bill which protects jobs by requiring a study of the economic impact and effectiveness of existing programs to protect the Lesser Prairie Chicken. “Existing programs to protect the Lesser Prairie Chicken have proven their effectiveness, without destroying countless jobs the way a listing would,” said Pearce. “Just last month, the Fish and Wildlife Service reaffirmed the success of these programs, further underscoring that a listing is an unnecessary and costly move. The amendment I introduced would avoid the needless loss of jobs by making sure that the decision is made with a full knowledge of the situation. America has seen too many jobs lost because species were needlessly and carelessly listed: I encourage the conferees to protect American jobs by including this amendment in the final legislation.” The amendment, which Pearce offered earlier this year was accepted with broad support in the House, requires the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a study on current USDA programs related to the Lesser Prairie Chicken to analyze the economic impact and effectiveness of these programs. These programs have proven to be successful, effective means of protecting the species, without the immense costs and lost jobs that would result from a federal listing. Rep. Pearce’s amendment would produce a full analysis of both the conservation value and the cost-effectiveness of these programs, allowing an informed decision that takes cost and American jobs into account. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This is a step in the right direction, and is the product of considerable bipartisan cooperation among my office, the Forest Service, the New Mexico Range Improvement Task Force at NMSU, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service, and the office of Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham. I look forward to seeing the remaining ranchers return to their grazing allotments soon. My office is continuing to work closely with the Forest Service and with ranchers on this issue, and stands by to assist New Mexico ranchers in every way we can.” “I applaud the U.S. Forest Service’s decision, and am proud to have worked on a bipartisan basis to support New Mexico’s ranchers,” said Lujan Grisham. “While the Forest Service reviews the remaining grazing allotments, I will continue to work with partners and agencies at the local, state and federal level to protect this vital aspect of our state’s economy and culture.” Earlier this year, ranchers were ordered to remove livestock from grazing allotments due to severe drought conditions. Ranchers raised concerns that the action was arbitrary, and would lead to severe economic hardship. This bipartisan immigration bill would grant discretionary authority to review specific cases for a small number of Americans who are separated from their families due to minor earlier violations which are technical in nature or occurred when the family member was a minor. Such review was permissible until 1996, when the current regulations were put in place. Both O’Rourke and Pearce have handled federal casework for constituents whose families have been needlessly separated. The American Families United Act would allow a judge or the Secretary of Homeland Security to review these cases and determine whether relief is in the public interest, an option not currently available. The legislation would prohibit this review for individuals without a legal basis to live in the U.S., or those with a serious criminal record. “I am proud to work across party lines to allow justice for wrongfully separated families with my good friend Congressman O’Rourke,” said Pearce. “I have long said that we should never split up families, and today’s proposed law allows the careful and sensible evaluation of cases where American families have been wrongly separated, but still makes sure that our immigration laws are upheld. Immigration is an important issue that is central to the future of our country. I am hopeful that the small step we take today will be the start of further cooperation between our two parties in Washington, and that we can tackle greater challenges of immigration reform together in the near future.” “This is an issue of fairness and standing up for U.S. citizen families,” said O’Rourke. “I have heard countless heartbreaking stories of families in my district forced to live apart because of arbitrary laws with punishments that do not fit the actions and serve no public interest. The legislation would overhaul and restore the USA PATRIOT Act to its original intent by implementing major reforms to significantly rein in the NSA and other agencies from spying on Americans. “Americans are disgusted—and rightfully so—to know that the FBI and NSA have grossly misused and abused the law to collect phone records and other data,” said Pearce. “This legislation restores and narrows the PATRIOT Act to its original intent: to protect our communities, cities, and nation from terrorists both foreign and domestic. I am proud to support today’s legislation to protect Americans’ liberties and privacy against the reprehensible overreach of the federal government. Americans should never have to fear that their government is spying on them. Today’s legislation responds to the public outcry by putting a stop to the appalling overreach of the federal government. The USA FREEDOM Act includes a number of key provisions to protect Americans’ privacy and freedoms. It ends “bulk collection” of Americans’ records, and implements and strengthens prohibitions against other targeting of Americans. It creates an “Office of the Special Advocate” to promote privacy interests before the FISA court’s closed proceedings. It also improves transparency and accountability by requiring the government to submit new reports on its data-gathering activities, so that Americans are aware of the government’s actions. Pearce voted earlier this year for similar legislation introduced as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Today, I was glad to join with Democrats and Republicans alike to pass legislation to honor and better serve American veterans. We voted to recognize the courageous actions of Bennie G. And, we passed legislation improving our nation’s work to assist veterans with education and employment opportunities. I am pleased that the furloughs are over and the government is back to work. It should never have gotten to that point. Both parties are to blame for the mess we got ourselves into. While I was fully in favor of restarting the government, the final legislation to accomplish that had a multitude of problems: 1. It protects special treatment for Washington, meaning that Congress, the White House, and their staffers will receive massive taxpayer subsidies to cover most of their new healthcare costs. 2. It is only temporary; in three months we have the danger of the same turmoil again. 3. It has no dollar limit on the President’s power to borrow; he borrowed $328 billion the first day. 4. It had no reforms to address the overspending which kills jobs and threatens the country’s economic future. People ask what the entire discussion was about. It was a full-fledged struggle of ideas. On one side was the idea that we can continue borrowing and printing money; on the other is the idea that we must stop raising taxes, printing money, and spending more than we have. Compromise is possible. This year, the Republican House and the Democratic Senate managed to agree on many bills—including one that reforms student loan programs, and seven different bills that repealed or defunded parts of Obama care. The President signed all of these reforms into law. The House passed a series of appropriations bills with responsible reforms to move the country toward a balanced budget. But the Senate refused to act, and it was necessary to fund the government with a “continuing resolution,” or “CR.” The President called for us to pass a “clean CR,” which is Washington talk for no more reforms…and no more attempts to get the deficit under control. Our country is over 17 trillion dollars in debt. We are printing, borrowing, and taxing as much as we possibly can. The disagreement over the CR spread next into the debt limit. WRRDA passed the House by a strong bipartisan vote of 417 to 3. The bill authorizes U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water resource projects throughout the country, including key dams and levees that help to prevent flooding on the Rio Grande in New Mexico, and makes cuts toward wasteful, outdated projects. “Today’s legislation is critical for New Mexico and for the nation,” said Pearce. “As we have seen amidst this year’s drought and flooding, effective management of our dams along the Rio Grande is vital to our state. Today, the House voted overwhelmingly to ensure that the Army Corps of Engineers can continue their important work across the nation, while also saving $12 billion by cutting old, inactive, and unnecessary projects.” In May, the US Senate passed a version of WRRDA, and it is expected that a conference committee will be appointed to reconcile differences between the two bills. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Since we can all agree to the strength and effectiveness of the five-state Range Wide Plan, a listing under the Endangered Species Act is clearly an unnecessary measure that would have a detrimental impact on our local economies, and cut funding for education, emergency response, and other key programs our communities rely on.” The FWS today endorsed the five-state Range Wide Plan developed by state game and fish directors. Today’s announcement will allow for greater flexibility for participants in the plan if the species is listed. The final decision on whether to list the species under the Endangered Species Act is due this spring. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I announced when the shutdown began that I would return any pay received while the government wasn’t fully functioning. In returning my pay I have requested that the Treasury apply the full amount to the national debt.” Under the 27th Amendment, members of Congress are required to be paid, so Pearce still received pay for his work during the shutdown. However, he promised to return to the Treasury any pay received during that time, and today made good on that promise. Pearce calculated the amount as his salary for the 16 days the shutdown lasted not including taxes and withholding which are paid to the government regardless. The bad news is that the agreement does not end the double standard for Washington, nor does it change our nation’s dangerous course of reckless spending. While I am happy that furloughed employees can go back to work, I will not be able to support tonight’s legislation, which does nothing to address the problems we were elected to solve” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Res. 80, which provides immediate funding for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, and Indian Health Service. This bill is the latest of more than a dozen pieces of legislation passed by the House to reboot vital government functions, which the Senate has failed to pass. “Today, the House took action to protect vital programs for over 1.7 million Native Americans,” said Pearce. “This is a simple, commonsense bill and I call on the Senate to act now to pass this and the other bills passed by the House to protect Americans and restore funding for key government functions. The House is stepping up and taking action on issues that are vital to New Mexico, like today’s vote for Native American programs and Friday’s decision to provide immediate funding for our National Labs. I urge the Senate and the President to remember the needs of America’s middle-class, and act now.” So far, in addition to four separate votes to prevent the partial government shutdown, the House has passed with Congressman Pearce’s support the following pieces of legislation to reboot key federal programs. All of the following bipartisan bills have been blocked by the Senate and met with veto threats from the President: October 2: The House (including 25 Democrats) voted for H.J. Res. 73, which would provide funding for life-saving pediatric cancer research. October 2: The House (including 23 Democrats) voted for H.J. Res. 70, which would reopen national parks, memorials, and monuments. October 3: The House (including 35 Democrats) voted for H.J. Res. 72, which would provide immediate funding for veterans’ benefits. October 3: The House (including 36 Democrats) voted for H.R. 3230, which would make sure that National Guard and Reserve troops receive their paychecks. October 4: The House (including 23 Democrats) voted for H.J. Res. 85, which would make sure that FEMA is still able to provide funds for disaster relief. This bill ensures that states who have taken it upon themselves to help out, and reopen our treasured landscapes, are compensated fairly.” “The House is working to reboot the federal programs that are most important to Americans,” Pearce continued. “In just the last few days, I have joined with my colleagues in the House to pass legislation that pays our National Guard and Reserve, protects Headstart and nutrition programs for low-income children and families, and funds agencies important to the safety of Americans, like the FAA, FEMA, and the FDA. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to put American families before politics, and join the House in rebooting the programs we can all agree on.” This morning, Pearce voted for a bill to protect national security and New Mexico jobs by providing immediate funding for the National Nuclear Security Administration, which provides critical funding to our nation’s labs, including Sandia and Los Alamos. Yesterday, Pearce voted for H.R. 79, the Border Safety and Security Act, which provides immediate funding for border safety operations through the shutdown. Both bills passed the House. Wednesday, the House voted 425-0 to pass a bill that ensures death benefits will continue to be disbursed to families of fallen troops during the partial government shutdown. Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs receive roughly half of their yearly operating budgets from the NNSA’s budget. Without passage of this legislation, these labs will be forced to furlough employees – hurting our communities and the security of our nation. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I ask Secretary Moniz to join us in that spirit of cooperation, for the good of New Mexicans and the nation.” In the letter, Pearce pointed out that “The employees at our national labs and WIPP play a key role in our nation’s defense and growing our economy by focusing on everything from the development of weapons systems to energy efficiency studies...” and that furloughs at WIPP “would have serious and lasting economic consequences for the nearby community of Carlsbad and the surrounding area.” “In the spirit of HR 3223,” wrote Pearce, “I again ask you to certify these expenses and to guarantee any and all furloughed personnel at these critically important facilities are compensated accordingly.” The full text of the letter can be viewed here. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Res. 84, the Head Start for Low Income Children Act, which provides immediate funding for the Head Start program. This is the latest of ten separate bills passed by the House which provide immediate funding for key functions of the federal government. “The House is taking commonsense steps to reboot key functions of our federal government,” said Pearce, “from allowing our nations veterans to visit open air war memorials and museums to providing vital services and benefits for America’s veterans and most vulnerable. But again and again, these proposals have been inexplicably blocked by the Democrat-controlled Senate, and have been threatened with vetoes by the President. Americans expect better: the House is working to protect the parts of our government that America needs most. Why do the Senate and the President refuse to negotiate, even on the simple issues we can all agree on?” Congressman Pearce voted with the House four times to prevent a shutdown, each time making greater concessions and expressing a willingness to negotiate. Since then, the House has passed nine separate bills that provide immediate funding for key functions of the federal government, which have been blocked by the Democrat-controlled Senate, and met with veto threats from the President: to open our national parks and museums, to allow Washington, DC to continue operating using its own funding, to fund the lifesaving medical research at the National Institute of Health, to pay our National Guard and Reserve, to restore key funding for veterans’ benefits and services, to fund FEMA, to provide nutrition assistance for low-income women and children, and to fund the Food and Drug Administration. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Many immigrants, just looking to feed their families, have risked lives and limbs because we mismanage the immigration system and the border. Since being elected to Congress, I’ve urged that immigration reform should be a top priority. Right now, there seem to be two camps. One, organized around the Senate bill, says to give all undocumented immigrants amnesty or a pathway to citizenship. The other camp says that all undocumented immigrants should be deported or should self-deport. I do not see that we can or should do this as a nation. We have been stuck arguing between the two sides for decades, without any solutions for the people who desperately need them. We are on a dangerous treadmill, with no end in sight. Most of the people who came here to work and feed a family are decent, hardworking people with strong family values. If my family was hungry, I don’t know that I would act any differently than they have. I support a compromise plan that is between the two sides—a compromise that we could put in place tomorrow. The solution is to create a noncitizen guest worker program that gives people legal status immediately. First, we completely secure the border, which has to be the first step for any reform to work. Then, create a guest worker program that can be utilized by both those already here and those waiting to come. Here is how it might look: Secure the border using technology and people. No other nation in the world allows uncontrolled access across its borders. I do not support the Senate plan of 20,000 new agents, and I have never supported a fence as the solution. It is too easily breached. Fix legal immigration The current system takes too long—sometimes decades—to come here legally. We must rethink, reform, and modernize immigration. The process must be more efficient, streamlined, and provide prompt answers to those asking to become citizens. New Mexico doesn’t have any time for more of the Senate’s political games. The House has done the right thing three times—it is now up to the Senate to act quickly and prevent a government shutdown.” “From the beginning, I have advocated the elimination of Obamacare exemptions for Congress and congressional staff,” Pearce continued. “I submitted an amendment to the CR and introduced legislation, H.R. 3198, to accomplish this goal. Today, the House has made this a central piece of its position on the bill to continue to fund the government: Washington lawmakers, staffers, and appointees must sign up for Obamacare just like all Americans. We must end the special privileges for the political class in Washington. More importantly, I call on my colleagues in the Senate to stop demanding special privileges for themselves and do the right thing and align Washington with the rest of the nation.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

As a result, the federal government will shut down until an agreement can be reached to resume government funding. “I have always believed that Congress should be held to the same standards as everyone else,” said Pearce. “As a result, I have made the difficult decision that my staff will be furloughed. And, though the Constitution requires that members of Congress must be paid, I will pay back to the U.S. Treasury the salary I am paid during the shutdown. I had hoped that a shutdown could be avoided: I encourage all New Mexicans to contact their Senators and urge them to pass the House Continuing Resolution and end the shutdown.” Rep. Pearce has voted three times to prevent a shutdown, and has asked all sides to negotiate and compromise to reach a fair solution. Congressman Pearce has also advocated for the elimination of subsidies and exemptions so that Congress and staff face the full effects of Obamacare. Pearce submitted an amendment to last Friday’s continuing resolution, and introduced legislation (H.R. 3198) to accomplish this goal. Tonight, the House voted to pass a third bill to continue funding the government, of which this was a central provision: Washington lawmakers, staffers, and appointees must sign up for Obamacare just like all Americans. “We must end the special privileges for the political class in Washington,” said Pearce. “I call on my colleagues in the Senate to stop demanding special privileges for themselves and do the right thing and align Washington with the rest of the nation.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The Administration has already granted a delay for businesses—American families deserve the same treatment. We can all agree that a shutdown would be bad for New Mexico, bad for the middle class, and bad for the country. I urge the Senate to return to work and act quickly. There is still time to join the House and save American families from more unnecessary burdens, confusion, and hardship.” Last Friday, Congressman Pearce voted in support of H.J.Res. 59, which funded the government through December 15, 2013, completely defunded Obamacare, and included the Full Faith and Credit Act, guaranteeing that the Treasury will still pay Social Security and disability obligations if the debt ceiling is reached, and preventing the White House from playing politics with those who rely on these payments. The Senate voted to strip key provisions from this bill. Tonight’s legislation will permanently repeal the job-killing 2.3% excise tax on medical devices, delay the implementation of Obamacare for one year to provide families with additional time to plan, and continue to fund the government through December 15, 2013. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Americans have overwhelmingly asked Congress to defund the unpopular and unworkable Affordable Care Act, and today, we listened. And, today’s Continuing Resolution also contains responsible measures to ensure that the U.S. does not default on its obligations, and reaffirms the ability of the Secretary of the Treasury to prioritize payments. This will ensure that the White House cannot play politics with vital spending if we reach the debt limit.” The Continuing Resolution includes language to completely defund Obamacare. It also contains H.R. 807, the Full Faith and Credit Act, guaranteeing that the Treasury will still pay social security and disability obligations if the debt ceiling is reached, and preventing the White House from playing politics with those who rely on these payments. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

(September 20, 2013) –Earlier this year, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce and the Congressional Western Caucus held a field hearing in Denver, Colorado to discuss the pressing issue of how to empower states and local governments in the management of our forests. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1526, the Restoring Healthy Forests for Healthy Communities Act, to do just that. This bipartisan legislation encourages state and local involvement in the management of forest land, helps ensure sustainable funding solutions for schools, and will hold the U.S. Forest Service accountable for keeping our forests healthy. “For far too long, New Mexico’s forests have been victims of neglect and mismanagement,” said Pearce. “This legislation brings common sense policies back to our forests. Catastrophic wildfires have destroyed forests across the nation because the people making the decisions about our forests are in Washington, not the surrounding communities. In addition to empowering those most affected by forest management policies, this bill increases timber production in areas already specifically identified by the Forest Service for timber harvests. This bill creates jobs, keeps our forests thriving, and helps local economies. It’s an all-around win for our forests and communities.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Included is language that brings assistance programs in line with 1996 welfare reform that mandated work requirements, so that able-bodied people are able to get back on their feet and help themselves, while funding remains in place to assist those who are unable to work. And, the bill contains precise and effective reforms to combat fraud and abuse within the program, while ensuring that the Americans who have fallen on hard times get the support they rely on. Today’s legislation will save $39 billion over the next decade, and will create a better nutrition program – both for those who need assistance and for the American taxpayer.” In June, Congressman Pearce voted in favor of H.R. 1947, which included commonsense reforms for nutrition assistance and protected funding for SNAP, the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. However, the bill failed to pass the House. Today, the House acted to reauthorize SNAP funding and protect the program for the millions of Americans who rely on food stamps to get through hard times. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

That is why I offered this amendment, which prevents taxpayer money from being spent to bail out those on Capitol Hill. I am tired of the games and backroom deals: Congress should have to play by the same rules as everyone else. The privileges, free passes, and broken promises must end.” During Congressman Pearce’s meetings with constituents in August, many discussions focused on the hypocrisy of Washington lawmakers exempting themselves from the law they passed for Americans. If the Administration goes forward with the implementation of Obamacare, H.R. 2775 demands that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) verify the eligibility of subsidy applicants. “Fraud and abuse within federal programs cost the American taxpayer hundreds of billions dollars each year,” said Pearce. “Recently, it was reported that welfare fraud is leading to an international trade in black-market food sales—all on the taxpayer dime. If Obamacare is fully implemented and the healthcare exchanges go into place, our nation simply cannot afford a lack of proper enrollment verification. Today’s legislation is a commonsense step to prevent fraudulent payments, ensuring assistance goes to those who truly need it – instead of those looking to take advantage of the good will of the American people. And, this bill will bring a measure of accountability to increasingly reckless and irresponsible government spending,” Earlier this year, HHS announced that it would rely on “self-attestation,” instead of verifying that applicants for subsidies actually qualify. In response, H.R. 2775 requires that accurate, reliable verification systems are enacted before subsidies are disbursed, in order to prevent fraudulent claims and protect taxpayer dollars. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

He was one of the first elected officials I made friends with and worked with when I came into office. Despite our differences in party affiliation, Sheriff Hernandez reached across the aisle to meet common goals, and taught me about bipartisanship. He was a great leader during a turbulent time for our state, admirably handled difficult issues that were happening near the border. It is time for other countries to shoulder the burden. Over the past few years, with revolutions throughout the Middle East, we have seen greater instability. The President has stated publicly that a change in the Syrian regime is necessary, but I'm afraid that greater American involvement will only make it more unstable. “The Russian government does not have American interests at heart, so I view their proposal with grave skepticism,” Pearce continued. “Although I fundamentally disagree with American intervention, and am glad to see the President rethinking a military strike, any diplomatic solution must yield tangible results that benefit the people of Syria and our allies in the region.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Res. 58. The resolution prohibits the use of funds available to any United States Government department or agency for the use of force in, or directed at, Syria by the United States Armed Forces. “American soldiers and their families have sacrificed enough,” said Pearce. “American taxpayers have given enough. The rest of the world needs to step up—America cannot fight every battle. My office has heard from over a thousand New Mexicans, overwhelmingly opposed to any U.S. military action in Syria,” said Pearce. “While I commend the President for adhering to the Constitution and promising not to act without Congressional approval, I cannot support his desired course. It is the responsibility of Congress to use its constitutional authority to prevent this impulsive and misguided intervention.” The legislation uses Congress’ power of the purse to prohibit any funding for the use of force in, or directed at, Syria by the United States, except in the case of a subsequent act of Congress specifically authorizing such use of force, or an attack or imminent attack on the United States. This morning, Congressman Pearce and Chairman Miller visited the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, where they met with VA Hospital Director George Marnell, toured the facilities, and discussed issues facing New Mexico’s veterans. Later this afternoon, Pearce and Miller will meet with veterans in Roswell regarding the creation of a veterans’ cemetery in the area. At 2:00, Pearce and Miller will hold an open forum at the Roswell Veterans’ Memorial Hall for local veterans to discuss ideas or concerns. Pearce and Miller will also meet with Roswell Mayor Del Jurney and NMDVS Secretary Timothy Hale. “It is of the utmost importance that our veterans are given the care and treatment they deserve,” said Pearce. “My office is committed to continuing its work with local VA leadership to improve care and communicate on behalf of our veterans. I am glad to have Chairman Miller joining me, so that he can better understand the issues faced by New Mexico’s veterans as we work to find solutions in Washington.” Pearce, himself a Vietnam veteran, has made veterans’ issues a priority throughout his time in Congress. He voted this summer to provide $7.7 billion dollars in new funding for PTSD treatment for veterans, and introduced the HEALTHY Vets Act, a bill to help improve the accessibility, convenience, and affordability of health care for veterans. Pearce has hosted more than ten veterans’ town hall meetings throughout New Mexico’s Second Congressional District. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Just last week, a rancher who had to shoot a wolf to protect his livestock was cleared only because of wolf bite marks on at least one of his animals. Countless New Mexican families live in fear of wolves attacking their children, pets, or livestock, or in fear of legal repercussions if they act to protect them.” “Even worse, these decisions are not being made by the people, or even by elected officials, but by the special-interest lawyers at the Center for Biological Diversity,” Pearce continued. “It is outrageous and unacceptable that New Mexicans’ lives and livelihoods are being put at risk, and our tax dollars wasted, by the machinations of a radical group that lines its pockets by strong-arming the government and manipulating our laws. It is time to give the power back to the people of New Mexico—the people who have to live with the painful consequences of this reckless program.” Last week, Pearce issued a statement highlighting the consequences of the wolf program. Despite millions of dollars spent, the Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program is an outright failure, with populations unable to come close to the recovery goals laid out by the US Fish and Wildlife Service—even as wolf populations elsewhere have thrived. In Vietnam, I saw firsthand the consequences that result when we commit to military action hastily and without a clear objective. Before the President takes any action, it is his constitutional duty to consult and receive authorization from Congress.” The letter notes that the Constitution and the war Powers Resolution of 1973 both outline the President’s responsibility to seek Congressional authorization: “Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the Constitution.” The letter also notes that “Congress can reconvene at your request. We stand ready to come back into session, consider the facts before us, and share the burden of decisions made regarding U.S. involvement in the quickly escalating Syrian conflict” The letter can be viewed here. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Steve Pearce and the New Mexico Congressional Delegation announced the U.S. Department of the Interior will return $26 million in mineral royalty payments to the state of New Mexico as a result of the N.M. lawmakers’ call for the state to be rightfully paid under the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA). “I’m pleased that the Department of the Interior has decided to return the mineral royalties withheld earlier this year,” Pearce said. “It is unacceptable that a unilateral decision in Washington can so easily cut off millions of dollars that are the lifeblood of western states like New Mexico. New Mexico’s classrooms and communities should not suffer at the whim of DC bureaucrats—the Administration’s reckless handling of this issue led to delays and uncertainty that are sure to impact our economy.” In fiscal year 2013, administration officials unilaterally made the decision that state’s share of royalties under the MLA would be subject to sequestration – automatic, across-the-board federal government spending cuts. Pearce, with the rest of the New Mexico delegation, opposed the move, which would cost 35 states a total of $109 million, including $26 million from New Mexico in 2013, and similar amounts in future years. The delegation, along with lawmakers from other Western states, led a bipartisan call for the administration to return the payments. In a May 16 letter, they also noted the hardship that states and local communities would experience if the sequestered revenues were not returned. Ben Ray Luján, Michelle Lujan Grisham and Steve Pearce announced the U.S. Department of the Interior will return $26 million in mineral royalty payments to the state of New Mexico as a result of the N.M. lawmakers’ call for the state to be rightfully paid under the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA). In fiscal year 2013, administration officials unilaterally made the decision that state’s share of royalties under the MLA would be subject to sequestration – automatic, across-the-board federal government spending cuts. The delegation, along with lawmakers from other Western states, led a bipartisan call for the administration to return the payments. In a May 16 letter, they also noted the hardship that states and local communities would experience if the sequestered revenues were not returned. Today, the Interior Department responded to the delegation’s request by announcing it will return the fiscal year 2013 royalty payments beginning on October of this year, which is the start of fiscal year 2014. As long as sequestration is in place, it is expected that future funds will still be subject to sequester in the year they are collected, but they will be returned the following fiscal year – in effect, refunding the funds to states after a delay. "This is extremely good news for New Mexico -- I'm very pleased that the administration has seen reason and will return the revenue owed to states from energy production on federal lands," Udall said. "These funds are the result of an existing agreement for mineral development. They provide a vital source of funding for public education and other functions New Mexicans rely on, and the federal government shouldn't be using them to balance its books. Too many ranchers live in fear for their families and their livestock, or in fear of legal repercussions if they act to protect them. This incident only reiterates the terror that wolves cause for New Mexicans, and calls attention to the need to rethink this costly and dangerous program.” After millions of dollars spent and over a decade of efforts, the Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program is an outright failure, with populations unable to come close to the recovery goals laid out by the US Fish and Wildlife Service—even as wolf populations elsewhere have thrived. The preferred route highlighted within the FEIS has the transmission line traveling through the northern most boundaries of the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). As a result, the DOD, with BLM involvement, created a Technical Working Group (TWG) to address any and all potential conflicts to the lines creation. “The TWG was created to analyze any and all impact the construction of Sun-Zia through WSMR would have on the range and national security, and to propose possible solutions to any impact,” said Pearce. “After months of work, the group has concluded that the proposed route would create a serious national security risk. As Mr. Conger highlights in his letter, the route as proposed would impede the military’s ability to complete testing that cannot be done anywhere else in the United States. The result would cause a devastating impact on national security.” “Based on this report, I hope Sun-Zia recognizes how damaging their proposed route will be to national security. I urge them to take the advice of the TWG’s report and take every action possible to alter the route to not to interfere with the critical mission at WSMR.” Congressman Pearce has time and again expressed his support for the creation of the Sun-Zia transmission line, so long it does not interfere with the military mission at WSMR. In addition to the critical national security work completed at the range, WSMR accounts for tens of thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars into the national and local economies. The New Mexicans I’ve talked to this week are disgusted, and they should be. I am tired of the games and backroom deals: If Congress and the President pass a law, that law should apply to everyone. That includes Congressmen, Presidents, White House staff, career bureaucrats, and everyone on Capitol Hill. The privileges, free passes, and broken promises must end.” On Wednesday, the Office of Personnel Management, working closely with the President, announced a ‘fix’ to ensure Washington lawmakers and staff members continue receiving government-backed health coverage. Under the ruling, Washington staffers and representatives will receive hefty subsidies from taxpayers to offset the cost of their coverage on the new exchanges—subsidies that taxpayers themselves won’t have access to. A key provision in the original Affordable Care Act would have prevented this, by specifically mandating that Congress be subject to the law like everyone else. But the Wednesday ruling negates that provision, giving Congress a free pass while millions of Americans face higher premiums and financial hardship as a result of the law. Congressman Pearce has voted repeatedly to repeal Obamacare, and has vocally opposed any move that would exempt Congress from the rules Americans have to follow. As Congressman Pearce has met with constituents in New Mexico this week, many discussions have focused on the hypocrisy of Washington lawmakers exempting themselves from the law they… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

It’s good for Americans, and it’s good for the economy. Owning a home anchors a family, and helps to build a community. I got to where I am today because my parents took a chance and bought small place just outside Hobbs. They worked hard and were able to send us to college. But the system we have today puts that dream dangerously out of reach for many Americans, and it’s at risk of being lost forever. During the housing crash of 2008, home values plunged and taxpayers were stuck with a bill for the most expensive bailout in our country’s history. New Mexico did not create the housing bubble or the financial crisis. We did not make the bad decisions that caused the crash—those came from Wall Street and Washington. But New Mexico taxpayers were forced to pay for the homes of complete strangers in Manhattan and Miami. To this day, we’re still feeling the effects of what started five years ago, especially when it comes home ownership. Today, fewer Americans own homes than at any point in the last 18 years. That’s bad news for our economy, our communities, and our future. Why are things so bad? If you’ve tried to buy a house recently, you know about the overwhelming costs, regulations, barriers, and uncertainty that come with that. Right now, the federal government uses taxpayer money to back 9 out of 10 home loans—already costing Americans nearly 200 billion dollars. This is not sustainable: it puts you on the hook every time somebody buys a house. And when they don’t pay, you lose money. Instead, we need a solution that protects our small banks, our communities, and our ability to confidently own a home. We need a solution that benefits hard-working Americans—by providing them the options, affordability, and flexibility they need when buying a home, and by investing their tax dollars wisely, instead of forcing them into a system that cannot succeed. The House Committee on Financial Services recently passed the Protecting American Taxpayers and Homeowners (PA… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

In response, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce today voted for H.R. 2009, the Keep the IRS Off Your Health Care Act. “Under ObamaCare, the IRS will be in charge of the nation’s healthcare decisions” said Pearce. “The IRS has shown plainly that it cannot be trusted. Americans are still waiting for answers and accountability after the IRS used its tremendous power to change elections and target Americans based on their personal beliefs. Now, the President is asking us to hand over control of own personal healthcare decisions to this scandal-ridden, discredited agency. But if the IRS cannot be trusted to handle routine audits responsibly and impartially, we cannot possibly entrust the IRS with our healthcare—with our lives, and the lives of our children, our families, and our loved ones.” H.R. 2009 would prohibit the IRS from implementing or enforcing any provision of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. Congressman Pearce is a cosponsor of H.R. 2009, and has been in close contact with constituents on this issue. On a recent email survey sent to over 50,000 randomly chosen constituents earlier this year, 79% of respondents said they were concerned about the IRS’ role in managing the new healthcare law, in light of its criminal targeting of organizations for political purposes. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

It is appalling, but not fireable, for General Services Administration officials to flagrantly disregard the law and waste nearly a million taxpayer dollars on a Las Vegas conference. In fact, such officials get month-long paid vacations and hefty retirement packages, all on the taxpayer dime. This week, the House worked to bring back the accountability that is lacking in Washington. Citizens must always have control, and no government employee should ever be exempt from accountability.” Pearce supported the following bills, which passed the House: H.R. 2565, the STOP IRS Act, which will allow termination of an IRS employee for “Performing, delaying, or failing to perform (or threatening to perform, delay, or fail to perform) any official action (including any audit) with respect to a taxpayer for purpose of extracting personal gain or benefit for a political purpose.” Rep. Pearce has been an outspoken critic of the IRS’ crimes for political purposes, and has advocated for legislation to prevent future crimes and hold accountable those responsible. H.R. 2879, The Stop Government Abuse Act, which allows federal agencies to place employees on investigative leave for misconduct, negligence of duty, malfeasance, or misappropriation of funds, and to remove or suspend that employee if deemed necessary. This ensures that government employees are not shielded from appropriate action if they abuse or neglect their position. Pearce is an original cosponsor of the bill. “In just the last four years, the regulatory burden on Americans has increased by over 520 billion dollars,” said Pearce. “The Administration’s regulatory agencies are grossly abusing their power, publishing hundreds of rules every week that are exempt from any oversight, checks, or balances. Under this crushing regulation, jobs all across New Mexico are disappearing. Middle class families have had enough—the REINS Act restores accountability to Washington’s out-of-control bureaucracy.” The Reins Act sets forth criteria for a “major,” rule, with regard to a new regulation’s impact on jobs, prices, investment, and American competition in global markets. If the rule meets the criteria set forth, then it requires Congress to enact a joint resolution of approval within 70 legislative days, or the rule will not take effect. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The bill requires the Environmental Protection Agency to obtain approval from the Secretary of Energy before issuing rules with an estimated direct and indirect cost of more than $1 billion. “Reckless and hasty regulations increase energy costs to consumers and threaten jobs” said Pearce. “Today’s legislation is common sense: the Administration should not be able to implement regulations without any thought for the lost jobs and higher costs to the middle class. This bill would prevent the Administration from recklessly killing jobs through regulation. I voted today to hold Washington accountable, and to ensure that the needs of New Mexicans come first. I urge the Senate and the President to join this effort to protect good paying jobs and low energy prices.” The bill has the strong support of the US Chamber of Commerce and other pro-business organizations. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Pearce is a cosponsor of the bill. “Iran continues to act with blatant disregard for human rights, safety, and the international community,” said Pearce. “Today’s legislation, which I strongly support, addresses the plight of the countless human beings facing mistreatment, torture, and martyrdom within the country, as well as the threat Iran poses on a global scale should it be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. We must never hesitate to stand against evil in any of its forms, and today’s legislation is a much-needed first step against a threat that is all too often ignored.” H.R. 850, of which Congressman Pearce is a cosponsor, imposes additional economic and financial sanctions on Iran related to human rights and terrorism. It directs the Secretary of State to determine whether Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps meets the criteria for designation as a foreign terrorist organization. It also directs further strong economic and financial sanctions with respect to human rights abuses in Iran, including restrictions on sales of commodities and financial transactions with Iran. Further, the legislation directs the president to submit a report within 60 days on Iran’s nuclear program, and to develop a National Strategy on Iran to address threats posed by Iran. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I’m proud to vote for a strong alternative that will protect New Mexicans’ health and safety, and protect good paying jobs here in the United States." The EPA’s proposed coal ash regulations are estimated to cost between 184,000 and 316,000 jobs—jobs protected by H.R. 2218. Today’s legislation shows the House’s continued commitment to supporting and protecting our nation’s troops. While troops are in harm’s way, we must provide them with the support they need to complete their mission and come home safety. I am proud to say the final bill accomplishes this mission. “In addition to providing our troops with the resources to do their job, today’s legislation cuts billions in waste, and brings accountability to the Defense Department,” Pearce continued. “Today’s bill includes an amendment to protect Americans’ privacy, and limits the NSA’s and other agencies’ ability to collect Americans’ phone records. The bill also prevents military intervention in Syria without Congressional approval, and bars the United States from military intervention in Egypt’s current civil unrest.” H.R. 2397 includes $5 billion in savings over the Fiscal Year 2013 enacted budget, and provides for a $1.8 percent pay increase for all military personnel. The bill additionally provides $34.5 billion for defense healthcare, including $125 million for TBI and PTSD treatment, and $246 million for cancer research. This annual legislation provides for personnel, operation, and maintenance for the Department of Defense for each fiscal year. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The federal government should provide state and local educators with the means and flexibility to develop education programs that best meet the needs of students. Today’s legislation takes meaningful steps to do just that by reforming, improving, and updating the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to empower teachers and parents, instead of Washington, to make education decisions.” The Student Success Act eliminates the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards, and instead implements state-developed plans that give each state the freedom to evaluate and improve their own schools. This legislation provides increased flexibility while still giving parents the ability to monitor schools’ performance and ensure that their children are receiving the best education possible. Moreover, it consolidates 70 ESEA grant programs into more efficient state and local block grants. Additionally, H.R. 5 replaces the “Highly Qualified Teacher” credential requirements with a provision that gives states and local school districts the liberty to hire teachers based on effectiveness and qualifications. Under No Child Left Behind’s “Highly Qualified Teacher” provision, states and rural school districts were often hindered to access of qualified teachers because of these cumbersome federal provisions. Furthermore, this legislation specifies that the Secretary of Education cannot compel states to adopt Common Core standards. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

These bills delay both the employer and individual mandates of Obamacare for one year, providing a legal and consistent application of the delays announced by the President earlier this month. “It is unacceptable for the President to pick and choose which parts of his own law he wants Americans to follow,” said Pearce, “Especially when the resulting uncertainty and confusion is driving healthcare costs even higher for hardworking New Mexicans and Americans nationwide. Obamacare clearly remains unworkable, but the Administration wants to saddle individual Americans with the burden while letting businesses off the hook. If—as the President has admitted—another year is needed to make the law work, then no American should be subject to the costs and challenges of this failed legislation. Today’s legislation is merely a starting point. It is clear Obamacare does not work and will never work, and Congress must act to find practical and effective solutions for the millions of Americans who are still without health insurance.” Pearce has repeatedly voted to repeal Obamacare so that it can be replaced with simple, commonsense alternatives that help New Mexico families get the freedom and coverage they need. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Despite the name, the bulk of the legislation has been devoted to critically important nutrition assistance programs many New Mexicans rely on,” said Pearce. “That is why less than a month ago, I voted for a reauthorization of a Farm Bill that included both critical updates to our nation’s agricultural policies and much needed reforms that allow the nutrition assistance to continue for decades to come. Unfortunately, the House was unable to pass this version of the bill on the first attempt.” In order to provide necessary certainty to both farmers and working families of New Mexico, the House version of the bill needed to be divided into an agriculture bill and a nutritional assistance bill. As a result, the bill passed today only includes reforms and reauthorizations of our nation’s agricultural policies. “This is not a perfect solution,” Pearce continued. “Yet, action today assures true reforms to both our agricultural and our nutrition assistance polices can continue in Congress. We as a Congress must provide farmers and hardworking families nationwide with the certainty this legislation offers. The assurances nutrition assistance programs provide are too important to be denied and should be addressed immediately. The separate bills provide an opportunity to remove waste, fraud, and abuse from these programs, making them work for the families who need them the most. I urge my colleagues in both the House and the Senate to work together to find the solutions and reforms needed to provide all Americans with the certainty this legislation can offer for years to come.” The Farm Bill also included an amendment introduced by Congressman Pearce with other western representatives that requires th… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

This appropriations bill provides key funding for important energy and defense-related projects, while reducing spending by $2.9 billion. “Effective government does not have to come with an excessive price tag,” said Pearce. “We saved money for the American taxpayer while remaining committed to important environmental cleanup projects, energy development, infrastructure maintenance and our national security. H.R. 2609 responsibly and evenly distributes cuts among various government agencies, and targets wasteful programs that shovel money toward the politically connected. Our national labs and other vital security related initiatives are also protected from major cuts.” The bill allows for the continuation of nuclear cleanup efforts, and provides key funding for the Department of Energy’s nuclear weapons security programs. It also invests money in projects to address rising gas prices, and allow job growth through research into reliable energy sources. In addition, the bill contains an amendment Rep. Pearce cosponsored with Rep. Kristi Noem (SD) that adds $25 million in funding for rural water projects, and still reduces the deficit by $5 million. The amendment is especially important to western communities like those in southern New Mexico suffering under severe drought conditions. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

H. Res. 287, the Members Operating to Be Innovative and Link Everyone (MOBILE) Resolution, would enable Members to participate in committee hearings and vote on non-controversial suspension bills remotely. “Imagine the opportunity to discuss key legislation with your representative even minutes before he votes on it, or watch committee debate conducted in a town-hall setting from your hometown,” said Pearce. “Modern technology could make this kind of accountability a reality—allowing members of Congress to debate, vote, and carry out their constitutional duties without having to leave the personal contact of their congressional districts. Keeping legislators closer to the people we represent would pull back Washington's curtain and allow constituents to see and feel, first-hand, their government at work. Elected officials should be in their districts, where they are easily accessible to constituents. Congress’ top priority should be constituents in our home states and districts, not the lobbyists and bureaucrats in Washington.” “Companies and families across the country are using technology to communicate remotely and conduct business. There is no reason that the legislative branch of the world's oldest constitutional democracy cannot do the same. I’m pleased to introduce the MOBILE Resolution with Rep. Steve Pearce to bring technological innovations to Congress,” said Swalwell. “Our bill will allow Members of Congress to work more efficiently and stay better connected to our constituents. As massive wildfires blaze across the West, policymakers must all be asking what went wrong, and what steps we can take to make sure this doesn't happen again. The devastating loss of life, homes, and forests that we see as a result of these fires must not be allowed to continue. As we mourn for these brave heroes, we must also remember the hundreds of courageous firefighters still in harm's way as they continue to battle this year's catastrophic fires." | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

I applaud the BLM today for their decision to take more time to hear from the people their decisions will affect. I hope that they will consider the feedback they receive, and decide against more restrictions. We need a land management policy sensitive to the needs of the people, not one that impedes job creation and keeps seniors and people with disabilities out of public land.” More information on the plan can be found on the BLM’s website at www.blm.gov/nm. Last month, Pearce asked New Mexicans in Doña Ana, Otero, and Sierra Counties to submit comments on the Draft Management Plan. The comment period has now been extended through September 12, 2013, providing an additional 60 days to submit comments. Written comments on the decision can be emailed to NM_LCDO_Comments@blm.gov, or mailed to: Bureau of Land Management Attention: Jennifer Montoya 1800 Marquess Steet Las Cruces, NM 88005 So that he can follow up with the BLM, Congressman Pearce also encourages constituents to submit a written copy of comments to his office at Congressman.Pearce@mail.house.gov, or: U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce 2432 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

In short, these bills provide exactly what America needs: jobs, reliable energy, and real economic growth. It is time to put America back to work and back on track to a strong energy future. Yesterday, the House passed H.R. 1613, the Outer Continental Shelf Transboundary Hydrocarbon Agreements Authorization Act, which allows further oil and natural gas development in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, earlier this week, Congressman Pearce voiced strong opposition to the President’s plans to unilaterally implement new regulations that would cost American energy jobs and drive prices still higher. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Congressional Delegation Seeks to Help New Mexicans with Genetic Brain Disorder | 2013-06-27 | 2013 | 2013-06 | Republican | House | NM | Steve Pearce | P000588 | web.archive.org | legacy | WASHINGTON - The New Mexico Congressional Delegation has introduced legislation to expand needed research, treatment and education efforts related to Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (CCM), a relatively unknown disorder of the brain and spinal cord more common among New Mexico Hispanics than any other group. The Cavernous Angioma Research and Treatment Act would build upon an existing network of clinical and research labs to increase coordination, information sharing and awareness about the disease for both professional and patient education. It would also support the development of telehealth infrastructure to reach rural, underserved communities. Cavernous Angioma affects more than 1.5 million Americans, the largest proportion of whom reside in New Mexico. “I am proud to join with my colleagues from New Mexico to help those struggling with cavernous angioma, U.S. Representative Steve Pearce said. "This bill brings much-needed attention to this rare disease, while also taking vital first steps in finding new treatments and approaches to assist individuals in New Mexico and across the United States living with this debilitating disease.” “Raising awareness for this debilitating disease that impacts more than a million people across the country, yet has received little attention, is a critical step in this fight,” said U.S. Representative Ben Ray Luján. “With a significant number of New Mexicans afflicted with CCM, more research is needed in order to find a cure and provide greater hope for those battling this disease.” “I’m proud that our state’s congressional delegation is working together to improve the lives of the many New Mexicans affected by Cerebral Cavernous Malformation, a disease that is especially prevalent among our state’s Hispanic population,” said U.S. Representative. Michelle Lujan Grisham. “Through expanded research, treatment and awareness, we can learn more about CCM and find ways to help those living with this rare but potentially life-threatening disease. And by further developing t… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The decision comes just a week after Congressman Pearce and eight other members of Congress submitted a letter requesting a six-month extension of the public comment period on the listing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will soon publish their decision to extend the deadline in the Federal Register. “This extension is the right decision for New Mexico and the West,” said Pearce. “In the past, we’ve seen hasty listing decisions needlessly cost thousands of jobs, destroy communities, and even have a detrimental impact on the environment and the species itself. The Fish and Wildlife Service has acknowledged the substantial disagreement and doubt cast on the case for listing the species. I call on the FWS to take full advantage of this opportunity to carefully consider the evidence, as well as the countless jobs at stake and the proven success of existing conservation efforts. “I encourage all New Mexicans to make their voices heard now by contacting the Fish and Wildlife Service,” Pearce continued. “Communities across New Mexico and the West are at stake—we stand to lose jobs and necessary funding for education, first responders, and other vital programs. We must fight for our communities if we are to preserve our jobs and our way of life.” Daniel Ashe, Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, sent a letter in response to Congressman Pearce and the other signers of the letter requesting an extension. In the letter, he acknowledged that “Public comments received…have highlighted substantial scientific disagreement regarding the sufficiency or accuracy of the available data relevant to the listing proposal for the lesser prairie-chicken.” Ashe also thanked the Congressmen for their support for existing conservation plans, and expressed commitment to working with states and local … | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
