While that’s nearly enough Republicans to throw the contest to a second ballot, Cole said the number of Republicans who would only vote Boehner for speaker was “higher than 130,” meaning he believes there is no other Republican who could feasibly take the gavel. Boehner was vindicated by the government shutdown and the November election results, Cole said. But Cole, who begins his seventh term in the 114th, also thinks Boehner was “strengthened” by former Majority Leader Eric Cantor losing his primary. There’s now no “logical alternative” to the Ohio Republican. We commit ourselves to getting in shape or quitting bad habits, but by January 5, many have already strayed. As a friend of mine says, that’s 10 times longer than the Bible with none of the Good News! I want to strip out those loopholes, protect folks from an abusive IRS, and lower the tax rate for hardworking Americans, and I’m optimistic there’s positive momentum behind such changes. We won’t likely rewrite our entire tax code in a single year, but we must make progress toward creating something that’s simpler and fairer. Second, I want to open new markets for trade between South Dakota and the world. The United States is currently in negotiations with 11 nations to create a Trans-Pacific Partnership and with the European Union to create the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. South Dakota already exports around $1 billion annually to markets involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership and $125 million to the European Union, but there is room to grow if we can level the playing field for U.S. exporters. This past year, the House passed the Employee Health Care Protection Act. It allows American workers who receive coverage through their employer the opportunity to keep their health plans through 2019. Additionally, I introduced the Simplifying Technical Aspects Regarding Seasonality (STARS) Act to clarify the employer mandate’s seasonal worker exemption provision so that our small businesses can focus their resources on doing what they do best: create jobs. Maj. Peyton Mathis, Jr., commander of the 44th Fighter Squadron, will be buried in his hometown of Montgomery, Ala. Saturday, January 3rd. He was 28 years old on June 5, 1944 when the P-38J Lightning he was piloting went down over Guadalcanal Island after returning from a mission. Rescue and recovery attempts at the time of the crash were unsuccessful due to the heavy jungle. It wasn’t until 2013, when local islanders informed Department of Defense crews of a nearby crash site, that the downed P-38 was found, Maj. Mathis still strapped into the cockpit. When Peyton Mathis III, Maj. Mathis’ nephew, learned his uncle’s lost plane and remains had possibly been found, he contacted U.S. Representative Martha Roby’s office for help expediting the identification and return process. Maj. Mathis’ widow, Evelyn, is now in her 90s, and the family understandably wanted the remains to be identified and returned as soon as possible. The Pearl Harbor-based Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) is a special Department of Defense division whose mission is to bring America’s fallen soldiers home, no matter how long it takes and no matter the cost. When JPAC learns of possible remains, it deploys a team of researchers and scientists. From the jungles of Vietnam, the deserts of North Africa, or the depths of the Pacific Ocean, these recovery missions require complex diplomacy and can be difficult and dangerous. In the case of Maj. Mathis, JPAC crews worked with local police to gain custody of the remains, which were sent to a special laboratory for DNA testing. Researchers used various forensic tools, including DNA provided by the family, to finally confirm Maj. Mathis’ remains. Rep. In a joint letter sent last week to Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, the Senators raised questions about exceptions to a new FBI policy to obtain a search warrant before using a cell-site simulator. The Senators also asked about other agencies' use of the technology. It remains unclear how other agencies within the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security make use of cell-site simulators and what policies are in place to govern their use of that technology, Leahy and Grassley wrote. I have spoken of the great pride we all have in the men and women serving at Whiteman Air Force Base and Fort Leonard Wood. This summer I had the privilege of speaking, via telephone, to members of the 442nd Fighter Wing deployed to Afghanistan. What these Airmen did was so important to the troops on the ground - and I thanked them for the job they were doing. The Washington Post recently reported that, last June, NASA marked completion of a $350 million tower (“A-3”) built to test a cutting-edge rocket engine (“J-2X”) that would help send astronauts to the International Space Station, the moon, and even Mars. As part of President George W. Bush’s Constellation program in 2004, the J-2X engine would power the Ares I and Ares V rockets that would transport astronauts and cargo separately to their destinations. Since the engine would be ignited only after the rockets were already in space, A-3 was made to withstand the blast of a rocket engine and create a vacuum inside similar to the conditions in space. The project was originally projected to cost $119 million and be finished by 2010. But in 2010, A-3 was well over-budget and behind schedule. After President Obama proposed abandoning the Constellation program, Congress ended funding for the Ares rockets and the J-2X engine – yet inexplicably reauthorized the final $100 million to complete A-3 despite no longer developing rockets that could use it. This pushed the final cost to $349 million, or nearly triple the original estimate. Tough decisions like these have helped to lower the deficit from $1.4 trillion, when the GOP took control of the House in 2010, to less than $500 billion today. In honor of the New Year, I wanted to take this opportunity to look back at some of the highlights from my first year in Congress. My first legislative action was to cosponsor H.R. 3121, the American Health Care Reform Act, which repeals ObamaCare and replaces it with common-sense, market based reforms. I received positions on two committees vitally important to our area: the Armed Services Committee and the Natural Resources Committee. These assignments were a victory for South Alabama jobs. This bill slowed down the pace of rate hikes for coastal Alabama residents, allowing time to ensure that sound science is being used to create federal flood maps. Education is an issue that is a passion of mine, and I have seen firsthand how the federal government’s intrusions can hamper student success. Arizona is the nation's top copper-producing state and Superior is part of that legacy. The Resolution Copper Mine is built on top of Superior's old Magma Mine. The mine site was reopened in 2004 as the Resolution Copper Mine after billions of dollars in capital investment brought new technologies that made it possible to bore deeper into the ore body. However, in order to maximize production and job growth, the mine must expand its footprint onto adjacent Forest Service property. Nearly 10 years ago, Sen. Jon Kyl and I first introduced a bill known as the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act, which proposed to transfer approximately 2,400 acres of Forest Service land to Resolution Copper so the mine could grow. The longer the project is stalled, the more likely additional work will have to be done to the pipe including added inspections and recovering the pipe with a special anti-corrosive coating. The economic impact has wide reach in our state. Blytheville’s Nucor Corporation was slated to make some of the steel for the pipe. A central Arkansas Caterpillar employee wrote to me about the importance of this project to his job because of its impact on his livelihood. ‘The Keystone pipeline project would be a huge boost to us,” he wrote. Once built, the pipeline will provide a safe and reliable supply of energy. The project will help maintain lower fuels prices, which is good for all Arkansans -- at the gas pump, at the store, and for job creation. A retired constituent told me that his monthly premiums have tripled and his deductible has doubled - forcing him to re-enter the workforce to cover the significant increase in his health care costs. A woman living in Massillon said that though she has insurance now, she can’t go to the doctor because she can’t afford her deductible. Another said that her health care costs are so high she is forced to choose whether to buy food or pay her utility bill to stay warm. People all across my district are growing more and more frustrated with the narrow networks and higher costs of their health care since the implementation of the law. The misguided eligibility requirement caused soldiers who served over 20 years total, but less than eight years as commissioned officers, to be involuntarily retired at their highest enlisted rank instead of their commissioned rank. Several pieces of legislation introduced by Boozman were approved by Congress or were included in larger bills and passed with bipartisan support. Defense Language included by Boozman in the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization (NDAA) allows servicemembers killed or wounded in attacks by foreign terrorist organization to be eligible for the Purple Heart. This provision is meant to address the attacks at the recruiting station in Little Rock and Fort Hood, TX. If the person or persons who carry out such an attack can be shown to have been in contact with a foreign terrorist organization or the attack was motivated by a foreign terrorist organization then the servicemembers wounded or killed in such an attack would be eligible for the Purple Heart. The provision is retroactive to September 11, 2001. Foreign terrorist organization means an entity designated as such by the Secretary of State. Boozman included an amendment in the FY2015 NDAA that requires that the Secretary of the Army submit a report to Congress no later than March 15, 2015, on how the Army intends to modernize the Army National Guard’s fleet of UH-60A aircraft. This is relevant to Arkansas because the AR National Guard has a number of UH-60A Black Hawk helicopters. The “A” model is the oldest variant of the Black Hawk and is costly to maintain and operate because of the age of the airframe. The Army has two newer variants, the “L” and “M” variants and this section asks for a plan from the Army on how they will replace the “A” models with newer models. Boozman authored language included in NDAA will improve the ability of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Board of Visitors to perform critical oversight responsibilities.
