The Senate voted to confirm several nominations, including IRS commissioner, Federal Reserve chairman, assistant secretary of State, secretary and deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, as well as several judicial nominations for vacant seats around the country. The Senate also passed the Murray-Ryan budget deal, as well as the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2014, or H.R.3304. Murray-Ryan Budget Deal Last week, Senate Budget Committee chairman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) proposed a two-year budget agreement in advance of the budget conference’s December 13 deadline to produce a budget. The House swiftly passed the Murray-Ryan budget by a vote of 332 to 94. The Murray-Ryan deal, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, would reduce the deficit by $23 billion over the next decade and by $100 billion over the next two decades without raising taxes. I voted for the Murray-Ryan budget deal because it finally gives America a budget to operate under and averts government shutdowns through 2015. As a longtime advocate of biennial budgeting, I believe this bipartisan agreement is a good first step toward managing government spending and the fiscal policy of our country. In their letter, the senators also directed OSHA to issue updated guidance correcting their misinterpretation of current law. The requests were made in a letter to Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, who oversees OSHA. In their letter, the senators wrote, “OSHA’s interpretation defies the intent of Congress in exempting farming operations from the standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Act…Worker safety is an important concern for all of us—including the many farmers who probably know better than OSHA regulators how to keep themselves and their employees safe on farms. If the Administration believes that OSHA should be able to enforce its regulations on farms, it should make that case to Congress rather than twisting the law in the service of bureaucratic mission creep.” The letter was led by Sen. Could it be they are afraid an impartial hearing might bring an end to the cloak of partisan protection that has allowed this Congress to focus on work that has not represented the will or the interests of the people of this country? As a member of the Senate Veteran Affairs Committee, I frequently hear from Georgia veterans and across the country about the many challenges they face—from long waits for a VA disability claims decision to limited access to quality health care to difficulty finding civilian employment. Far too often, our system is failing veterans. When we fail our veterans, we are also failing to honor their service and sacrifice. By far, the most common issue I hear about from veterans is the outrageous wait times that they must endure in order to receive their hard earned benefits. According to its own data, the VA set a goal to complete 1.27 million total claims by June 30 of this year, the end of the third quarter. Unfortunately, the VA fell short and completed only 1.17 million claims. Although the backlog remains unacceptably high, the VA is making progress and has imposed mandatory overtime to devote more hours to reducing the backlog in response to pressure from Congress, veterans organizations, and veterans. I am committed to seeing that veterans don’t have to face these incredibly long wait times to compensate them for their sacrifice, and I am working with other members of Congress to conduct oversight to push the VA to eliminate the backlog. These cuts target our most vulnerable citizens, like seniors, children, veterans and disabled persons. In fact, veterans are the fastest-growing group receiving food stamp benefits. Census data indicate that about 900,000 veterans receive SNAP each month. And this figure is understated, because the Census data do not consider homeless veterans receiving SNAP benefits. This program is a critical support for many households with veterans. Stars and Stripes reported that food purchases paid for with SNAP at commissaries tripled from 2008 to 2011. Feed our Vets, a nonprofit group that establishes food pantries for veterans, has estimated that nearly 3 million veterans and their families don’t get enough food to eat each month. This terrible Republican cut of $40 billion reduces the food assistance program by half. The Republicans held no hearings or did any an analysis of the hurt and pain and hunger this cut will cause the people of our nation. In the 1850s Springville widely became known as a health resort, and people came from great distances to experience the springs. The mineral water from these springs caused the sand around the springs to turn black, resembling gunpowder, which lead the city to be incorporated as Powder Springs in 1859. The next several decades were hard on Powder Springs. The Civil War put an end to the use of the area as a health resort. After the Civil War, a thriving agricultural industry sprung up, but the coming of the boll weevil in the 1920s and the Great Depression devastated the region. But the hard-working people of Powder Springs never gave up. With a population quickly approaching 16,000, the city is once again prospering. Its beautiful parks, nature trails and recreation centers draw in visitors from afar.
