Today there was welcome news out of the FDA, as they announced they will lift the lifetime ban on blood donations by gay men. This change is long overdue. "But while I am encouraged about the lifting of the lifetime ban, the FDA kept in place a block on donations by men who have had sex with other men in the last 12 months. With that ban still in place, there remains a sizeable pool of donors that will continue to be prevented from donating blood. This is a sign of progress and a step in the right direction but is not a comprehensive solution. "More than 30 years ago, my husband Paul began fighting to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. I agreed with him then and I feel just as strongly about championing similar measures today. These new EPA rules do little to change the status quo, and will allow polluters to continue to dump coal ash waste in unlined pits and ponds that are prone to fail.” When coal is burned for electricity, several byproducts result, most notably a substance called “coal ash.” These byproducts contain high levels of toxic substances like arsenic, mercury and heavy metals that can be harmful to both humans and wildlife. Much of the leftover waste is stored in waste ponds or other storage methods that have proved to be inadequate at protecting groundwater. Since a massive coal ash spill in Tennessee in 2008, the EPA has documented coal ash waste sites tainting hundreds of waterways and underground sources of drinking water with heavy metals and other toxic contaminants in numerous states. Since the 1970s, utility companies have been allowed to dispose of coal ash under state laws that vary widely across jurisdictions and in many cases are lax or absent.
