Instead of making sure the oil and gas industrys last-resort protections work, the Trump administration resorts to putting protection last. In 2001, Republicans cut taxes by $1.3 trillion; in 2003, by $1 trillion; and in 2005, there was the repatriation tax holiday. Each time, like today, the Republicans promised job growth. However, they took us to the casino each time without a win. So here we go again. The Treasury Department issued a one page analysis of the Republicans’ tax bill on Monday citing 2.9 percent growth. That’s not in line with what we’re hearing from any main stream economists – and fortunately for us, we have two of them with us today. The reality is tax cuts do not pay for themselves. Even taking into account growth, JCT’s macroeconomic analysis finds that the Republican tax bill will still cost over $1 trillion. And frankly, even the Treasury Department’s one pager also concludes that tax cuts don’t pay for themselves. I should also note that the 1981 Reagan tax cuts did not pay for themselves either. Like today, they were assuming future spending cuts, which as we know never occurred. We should learn from these past experiences. We have a million new veterans who we need to care for – and we’re lucky to have a veteran with us today – and our military is committed around the world. The EPA has found that the net benefits of the fuel economy standards are nearly $100 billion and would reduce oil consumption by 1.2 billion barrels. “We urge you not to weaken these vehicle emissions standards, and allow the auto industry to ensure its continued success and further its innovation while maintaining a standard that brings clear public health, climate, and consumer benefits,” write the Senators in their letter to the EPA. “As you move to reevaluate the sound technical conclusions your agency reached last year in the mid-term evaluation, we expect you will consider the facts, the science, and the law, which all lead to the single conclusion that the standards are achievable.” A copy of the letter can be found HERE.
