In particular, I hope everyone will take a few minutes to think of the brave men and women in our armed services, especially those serving in hot spots around the globe, who help keep the peace and allow us to be safe during these troubled times. I want us to remember, too, their families, especially those living near us, who can’t be with their loved ones for Christmas. It’s my wish that all of us will let them know how much we appreciate the work they do to keep the home fires burning. And how grateful we are of the work these courageous service men and women do. We thank them for their work and sacrifice. I am so proud of them all. There are so many folks to thank for their work, from the cop walking the beat, to the bus driver who delivers passengers safely to their destinations, to the teacher who opens up a new world to a child as he or she masters a new skill. Even the barista at the coffee shop deserves an extra smile and thanks – that cup of joe may be the little extra boost that keeps you alert as you drive the family to the next Christmas gathering. Amidst all the hoopla, it can be challenging for some of us who have lost someone dear to our hearts. I can only hope that you find a moment of solace, a moment when something sparks a reminder of those earlier happy times and you can smile. Reuters reports, “The Obama administration made a major last-minute policy shift on Thursday, saying that the change would help Americans meet a looming deadline to replace insurance plans canceled because of new standards under Obamacare reforms.” The administration knew for years that millions of Americans would lose their health care plans because of this law – already including nearly a quarter of a million people in Michigan – but the President repeated his promise of, “If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan, period. … No matter what.” Now, just days before the already-delayed deadline to enroll in a plan for coverage beginning on January 1, the administration is attempting yet another desperate round of damage control. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, commented, “The health law is like a Jenga game – the administration keeps yanking out pieces, and ultimately nothing can keep it from collapsing. In the first six weeks since the law was launched, 225,000 Michigan residents received notices that their health insurance plans were canceled, despite President Obama’s numerous promises that “if you like your health plan, you can keep it.” But more than broken promises, too many people across Michigan and the country will now be paying higher premiums, losing their coverage, or be unable to see their preferred doctors because of this onerous law. Jon Shackleford from Chelsea recently contacted my office saying that the premium for his high-deductible health insurance will increase from $609 a month to $731 a month. “I am extremely angry and disappointed and frustrated. The Federal Government is harming people like me. Please let your colleagues in Congress know that your constituents are suffering under this bad law and we need relief — fast,” Shackleford wrote. Dexter resident Julie Boonstra also needs an immediate reprieve from the law. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with Leukemia and has since found doctors and specialists that she relies on to help her in her battle. She also relies on a daily oral chemotherapy. Fortunately, she had found a private individual health insurance plan that covers her medical expenses and treatment and allows her to see the doctors she knows and trusts. However, in October, she received a letter from her insurance provider that her plan would be dissolved and she’d need to find a new one within the matter of weeks. Since then, she has spent hours trying to complete an application through the health care website, only to be thwarted by technical difficulties. Republicans last week blocked an effort by House Democrats to extend the program into 2014. The county-by-county report, based on the total number of people in Michigan currently receiving federal unemployment insurance, is below. The information was provided by the Michigan Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs. Overall, more than 43,000 people in Michigan are set to lose their insurance coverage immediately on Dec. 28. An additional 86,500 people in Michigan will lose their coverage in the first six months of 2014 if Republicans continue to block an extension of the program. Federal unemployment insurance took effect in 2008 and has been reauthorized several times since as Americans continue to recover from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Despite the real progress the economy has made since its near collapse in 2008, there are still 1.3 million fewer jobs than there were before the recession began, long-term unemployment as a percentage of the unemployed is 37 percent, near historic highs, and the unemployment rate in Michigan was 9 percent in October. Failure to extend federal unemployment insurance would also hurt job growth throughout the nation, costing the economy 240,000 jobs, according to the White House Council of Economic Advisers. The CEA estimates that in Michigan alone, failing to extend the program will cost 8,450 jobs. A few weeks ago they received a letter from their current health-insurance provider saying it can no longer offer them the same plan with a $375 per month premium because it doesn’t meet the mandates required under Obamacare. Hartzell Veneer currently has 31 employees, six of which transferred to the area from Arkansas. The manufacturing facility is currently in the process of building a 35,000-square foot expansion. Once that expansion is complete, estimated to be sometime in 2014, the staff will double in size. The facility makes veneer facings for cabinets, doors and other wood products. Walberg said he was amazed by the process that goes into making the facings. He said he appreciated the quality and workmanship that was going into the products being made at the facility. Walberg took questions from employees of the facility. One question asked focused on healthcare. Walberg said he doesn't support the current plan. Christopher Hemwall from Monroe as he underwent rehabilitation. In March 2011, he was shot three times in an ambush while serving in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province. Eventually, Sgt. Hemwall’s right leg had to be amputated below the knee after an experimental treatment failed. Yet, in spite of these hardships, he remains committed to serving our country again after his rehab. On October 30, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform looked into the July and August 2011 human resource employee training conferences, which took place in Orlando and included mismanagement of funds, unethical behavior, and cost taxpayers more than $6 million. During the hearing I had the opportunity to ask the current VA Assistant Secretary for Human Resources why conference planners were not concerned about establishing and staying within a budget, and I expressed my concerns over wasteful spending that included $50,000 alone on a parody video and $98,000 for promotional items including water bottles, fitness walking kits and hand sanitizers. Conference planners also traveled to Dallas and Nashville looking for the right city to hold their event while they enjoyed helicopter rides, spa treatment and shows. Meanwhile, the overnight conferences to train human resource staff included DJ’s, karaoke and game nights.
