"If Chairman Xi is the 'people's leader,' who are the people? When Chairman Xi talks about 'the people,' he doesn't mean the Uyghurs in torture camps. When Chairman Xi talks about 'the people,' he doesn't mean the Falun Gong prisoners whose organs are harvested. When Chairman Xi talks about 'the people,' he doesn't mean the baby girls who were left to die under China's one-child policy. The rule says that insurance companies selling taxpayer-subsidized Obamacare plans that cover elective abortion must now collect a separate fee from policy holders for that abortion coverage. This rule brings insurance companies who had flaunted the law under the Obama Administration into compliance. This pro-life, pro-transparency rule is an important step in the right direction. Obamacare uses publicly-subsidized plans that cover abortion on demand. The Obama Administration hid the ball by letting insurance companies bury a legally required abortion surcharge in paperwork, but this new Trump Administration rule makes sure that the fee is out in the open. This is good news for Nebraskans who don't want their tax dollars funding abortion businesses." | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

| https://adriansmith.house.gov/newsroom/columns/finding-light-during-christmas | Finding the Light During Christmas | 2019-12-20 | 2019 | 2019-12 | Republican | House | NE | Adrian Smith | S001172 | adriansmith.house.gov | legacy | After difficult years like 2019, I find it even more important to remember the true meaning of Christmas. It is about gathering with our loved ones to celebrate the love God gave in gifting to the world his only son. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan spoke about the most wonderful time of year and the beauty of treating all our neighbors with love and kindness. This Christmas let us find it in our hearts to walk with each other in the light of Christ and appreciate God's gift. Merry Christmas, and I wish all Nebraskans a safe and happy holiday season. President Ronald Reagan Message on the Observance of Christmas December 23, 1987 Christmas, as the carol tells us, is ``the most wonderful time of the year.'' We see it in the excited eyes of a child -- an excitement easy to explain. What with the sights of brilliantly decorated trees, the sounds of familiar hymns and songs, and tastes of fresh-baked cookies and other treats, and above all the long-anticipated visit from St. Nick, Christmas for children is a time unlike any other. That is true for grownups as well, of course; the joy and meaning of Christmas only deepen as we grow older. We still find pleasure in exchanging greetings and gifts, and we still delight in the warm and colorful images of the holiday. But we perceive ever more clearly, as did Scrooge, that the true beauty and wonder of the season lie in the Christmas spirit of giving of ourselves for others -- the message of the Prince of Peace whose birth we celebrate. At Christmastime we accompany shepherds and Wise Men to the stable as of old, where we relearn the timeless and priceless lessons of love, humility and sacrifice, where we see the Christmas spirit as God's love flowing through so many people all at once. This spirit of love, as simple as a spoken greeting and as profound as a changed heart, seems so full that it ceaselessly looks for ways to express its power. We respond to it best when we share it with family, friend or stranger -- when we recognize that, under the sheltering evergreen bra… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | ||

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) today released a new Working for You pamphlet, which lists her major achievements for Nebraska in the U.S. Senate in 2019. As I reflect on 2019, nothing has made me prouder than seeing how Nebraskans have handled the many challenges that have come our way. In the face of severe storms, flooding, and economic uncertainty, our people responded how we always do with perseverance, grit, determination, and neighbor helping neighbor. Despite these difficulties, we managed to secure important legislative victories and investments in the Heartland's future. Here is a look back at what we accomplished by working together in 2019, said Senator Fischer. Click here to view a PDF of the pamphlet. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The U.S. Senate has passed bipartisan legislation called the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence(TRACED) Act. U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, is a cosponsor of the bill, which will crack down on robocall abuses. The legislation now heads to the president's desk to be signed into law. I am glad Congress came together in a bipartisan fashion to pass this bill, which I was proud to co-sponsor. Not only are robocalls frustrating and bothersomethey can also enable scammers who take advantage of consumers. It is time to free Nebraskans and all Americans from the deluge of unwanted phone calls, said Senator Fischer. In tandem with federal efforts, states like Nebraska also have been tackling the growing problem of unwanted robocalls. Senator Fischer introduced Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson, who testified in support of the TRACED Act at a hearing in the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet on April 11. I was proud to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee in support of this legislation earlier this year, and I look forward to working with law enforcement colleagues in developing and deploying meaningful solutions for consumers in the fight against illegal robocalls, said Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson More information on the TRACED Act: The legislation would require phone companies to verify where phone calls are coming from, using new caller ID authentication technologies referred to as SHAKEN/STIR. It would also direct the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create rules to address robocalls blocking services and one-ring scams, a deceitful practice in which robocallers allow a phone to ring one time to trick consumers into calling back. The bill would prevent telephone carriers for charging an additional fee to consumers for these services. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 8.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Georgia} Additionally, the TRACED Act would strengt… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Beginning in January 2020, U.S. Senator Ben Sasse will serve on the Senate Finance Committee. Sasse issued the following statement. This is an incredible opportunity to work on some big issues that hit home for our state. Our farmers and ranchers depend on trade to feed the world, and now Nebraska has a seat at the Senate's most powerful trade committee. Trade, tax, and health policy matter to moms and dads who work hard to give their kids the best shot they can. The Senate Finance Committee has a unique role and I'm eager to work with Chairman Grassley to advance pro-trade, pro-growth, and pro-family solutions. Widely held to be the most powerful committee on Capitol Hill, the Senate Finance Committee has jurisdiction over trade, tax, and health care policy. One of the Senate's so-called Super A Committees, the Finance Committee is tasked with oversight and reform of federal entitlement programs includingSocial Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Senator Sasse also serves on the Intelligence, Judiciary, and Banking committees. Senator Sasse will be the first Nebraska Republican to serve on the Senate Finance Committee since the 1970s. Former Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey served on the committee from January 1997 to December 2000. Nebraskans are now represented on the Senate's six most important Committees. Senator Sasse serves on the Finance, Intelligence, and Judiciary Committees and Senator Fischer serves on the Agriculture, Armed Services, and Commerce Committees. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

President Trump correctly determined NAFTA needed to be modernized for the 21st century, and USMCA meets that standard by maintaining existing trade opportunities, creating new ones, and implementing enforcement standards which ensure our partners follow through on the promises they have made. This historic trade agreement is a sign of good things to come for American trade. Smith, a senior member of the Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over trade, travelled to Ottawa and Mexico City to attend USMCA negotiations and served on the Republican whip team supporting USMCA enactment. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, released the following statement today after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the final rule establishing Renewable Volume Obligations for 2020 and the biomass-based diesel volume for 2021 under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS): I appreciate the Nebraskansincluding our farmers and ethanol producers who made their voices heard and submitted comments to EPA. Like many of them, I am disappointed in this announcement because it differs from the commitment made to my colleagues and me this fall that the 15 billion gallon obligation would be met using a 3-year rolling average of actual waived gallons. Instead, the EPA has chosen to use their own discretion and the Department of Energy's recommendations when determining waived gallons, despite their track record of disregarding these recommendations. While the final rule is still an improvement over the previous one, I am, and I know Nebraskans are, wary that the EPA will follow the law and meet these obligations like they say they will. President Trump cares about farmers and has made big promises to rural America. I will continue to work to make sure those promises are fulfilled. More information: In October, the EPA announced anRFS deal. As part of the deal, the agency said it would begin to account for projected numbers of gallons exempted when setting new Renewable Volume Obligations for refiners starting in 2020. In November, Senator Fischer submitted aletterto EPA Administrator Wheeler expressing concern about the way the agency plans to calculate the reallocation of biofuel gallons lost due to exemptions for oil refineries. Senator Fischer has long advocated for bringing more transparency to the exemption process. Earlier this year, she introduced the bipartisanRFS Integrity Actwith Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.). The legislation would ensure the EPA properly accounts for exempted gallons and ensures that key information surrounding smal… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Here's the bad news: the longer it stays on the books the longer Nebraska families are trapped under the weight of its impossibly complicated structure. We need to give families the power to manage their budgets with portable, flexible insurance that meets their needs. Moms and dads shouldn't be stuck with the two crummy choices of either big government bureaucrats or big overpriced insurance companies. This ruling is another chance for Congress to work on real solutions let's do better. Click here for video of the speech. Remarks as prepared: Mr. Speaker, I rise today to speak out against this attempt to remove the duly-elected President of the United States. There is perhaps nothing more seriously established in our Constitution than the impeachment of a President – only twice has it happened in our nation's 243-year history. Yet today, for political purposes, the House majority is trying to remove President Trump from office based on hearsay and conjecture. The articles of impeachment we are voting on today offer no evidence of a crime, but instead are purposely broad to fit the Majority's narrative. Less than one year until the next Presidential election, we are being asked to override the choice the American people made in 2016. This lopsided and biased impeachment process has had a predetermined outcome from the beginning. This is an unfortunate day in the history of our great nation. We must hope this political game does not set a precedent for the future. Surely, there will be disagreements between a President and Congress to come. Instead of unnecessarily dividing our nation, as we are seeing today, we should be looking for ways to come together. Thank you, I yield back. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:45:33Z |

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), along with Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO), Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Deb Fischer (R-NE) released the following statements after the House and Senate passed the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program (PRRIP) Extension Act that was included in H.R. 1865. The bipartisan bill was introduced by Barrasso on April 2, 2019. The Platte River Recovery Implementation Program (PRRIP) is a great example of how states can work together to recover endangered species and preserve existing water use and development,Barrasso said. Over the past decade, this program has proved to be a huge success. Thanks to PRRIP, birds on the endangered species list are recovering and critical habitat for a variety of wildlife is expanding. Extending this critical program will allow all three states to continue building on this success. The Platte River Recovery Implementation Program has responsibly protected endangered species living in Colorado's natural habitats, said Gardner. It's a great example of how a partnership between federal, state, and local stakeholders can promote conservation, protect nature and prevent litigation, and I'm pleased to see it reauthorized. The Platte River in Colorado is the bedrock of our economy and the headwaters for a unique and important ecosystem. The Platte River Recovery Implementation Program has helped protect endangered species through a collaborative approach with other states and water users in the region, said Bennet. I'm glad to see this effective program extended. Since 2008, the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program has served as a model for how a partnership between states and federal agencies can provide regulatory certainty,Fischer said. I am incredibly pleased this package meets those standards, ensuring electric cooperatives maintain their tax status when accessing disaster grants, providing general tax relief to areas of Nebraska hit by disaster, and ensuring several years of tax certainty to producers, refiners, retailers, and consumers who benefit from the biodiesel blender credit." Included in the tax package are several bipartisan provisions Smith has led on in the Ways and Means Committee. These include: The RURAL Act which ensures tax-exempt rural electric cooperatives maintain their tax-exempt status when they use government grants, contributions, and assistance. Nebraska relies on public and cooperative power generation to affordably meet its needs. The RURAL Act (H.R. 2147), which Smith co-introduced with Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), has 304 cosponsors. Extension of the Biodiesel Tax Credit, which expired at the end of 2017, through 2022. The Biodiesel Tax Credit has played a significant role in growing domestic biodiesel production and consumption. Tax relief for Nebraskans and other Americans living and working in federally declared disaster areas. Smith led the entire Nebraska and Iowa delegations in introducing legislation providing tax relief for areas impacted by the March 2019 disaster impacting both states. Legislation containing these Smith-led tax provisions passed the House of Representatives today on a 297-120 vote, and is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed by President Trump later this week. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-27T23:45:33Z |

On Monday, the senators joined members of the House of Representatives at an official ceremony at the Mardasson Memorial near Bastogne, Belgium marking this occasion. I am deeply grateful to have joined a bipartisan Senate delegation in Belgium for the 75thanniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. We honored the U.S. veterans and all Allied Forces of the Greatest Generation who fought in what was the bloodiest and largest battle in the history of U.S. forces. These brave fighters include people such as my uncle, David Buckner, who participated in the Battle of the Bulge as part of the 117thInfantry Regiment, 30thInfantry Division. Our nation will be forever indebted to the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who contributed to this critical German defeat that helped end fascism and Nazi menace, said Senator Fischer. Sen. Fischer was joined by Senate colleagues John Boozman (R-Ark.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.) Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), all of whom participated in events surrounding this milestone including meeting with U.S. veterans who fought at the Battle of the Bulge. On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched their last major offensive campaign during World War II. The attack surprised Allied Forces in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxembourg. Outnumbered, facing record-low temperatures and dwindling supplies, the Allied Forces on the frontlines dug in to defend against the German army. The battle lasted for six long weeks. U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the following statement today after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. was awarded a nearly $1.4 million grant for its Health Center Cluster: The Charles Drew Health Center has provided compassionate care for Omaha families for over three decades, and I am pleased that they are receiving this significant grant. Community health centers like Charles Drew are critical to keeping our state healthy I know this because I have had the opportunity visit and see first-hand the great work they do. I thank HHS for making this investment in the health care needs of Nebraskans, and will continue to work together with Charles Drew to help our communities. More information: Charles Drew Health Center provides medical, dental, and mental health services to over 11,000 patients in Omaha, and does not turn away potential patients based on their inability to pay. The grant of $1,378,251 was awarded to Charles Drew's Health Center Cluster. Senator Fischer has been a long-timeadvocatefor community health centers. Earlier this year, Senator Fischerspokeat the ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the new Charles Drew Health Center in Omaha. Senator Fischer also joined a bipartisanletterto the leaders of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee urging them to resolve the funding cliff community health centers are facing. She cosponsored the Community Health Investment, Modernization, and Excellence(CHIME) Act, a bill to reauthorize the Community Health Center Fund (CHCF) and the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) for five years. In 2018, Nebraska's community health centers served over 101,000 patients. Of these 92% had incomes at or below 200% poverty levels and 54% had incomes at or below 100% poverty levels. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Producers, manufacturers, and consumers all benefit from sound trade policies which expand access to international markets. One of the primary reasons I joined the Ways and Means Committee, is to seize opportunities to reduce tariffs, remove artificial barriers, and ensure all Nebraskans can benefit from fair, open markets. Fortunately, within the past week, we received great news on two massive trade wins for the United States, and Nebraska in particular. Nebraska's three largest export markets are Mexico, Canada, and Japan. Combined these three countries make up 54 percent of Nebraska's exports. In 2018, Nebraska exported $1.3 billion worth of beef the most in the nation and almost 29 percent of it went to Japan. However, Japanese tariffs on United States agriculture products have prevented producers from maximizing their opportunities in Japan. Because of this, I have long advocated for a bilateral trade agreement with the U.S. and Japan to reduce these barriers. Seeing opportunity before us, President Trump has made trade a focus in his administration. President Trump, Prime Minister Abe, and their teams have been working tirelessly to strike a deal. On December 4th, the Japanese Diet (Parliament) approved the United States-Japan trade deal. This agreement brings Japanese tariff rates on U.S. agriculture in line with our competitors, relieving a burden for our farmers and producers. The Diet's approval should ensure the trade deal goes into effect by the first of the year. While this initial deal is a win for agriculture, I hope the administration continues to work on a more comprehensive agreement with Japan to address other sectors of our economy. Closely following the great news with Japan, on December 10th, agreement was reached on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). USMCA improves upon NAFTA, which was signed more than 25 years ago, and modernizes trade in North America. In addition to providing much needed updates, USMCA will improve p… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Rep. Bacon was appointed to the NDAA conference committee for the third consecutive year. A refugee camp was founded in southern Guatemala for those escaping the violence. I went there to see if there was anything I could do to contribute in some small way to the solution. I remember very vividly that people there by necessity would burn the forest and just randomly plant corn in order to survive. Fast forward to today when there is a stronger interplay between the agricultural economies of America and Mexico. There is a 25-year-old trade agreement between our two countries and our northern neighbor of Canada. It's called NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement). It significantly reduced trade barriers, but it also hurt American manufacturers and workers. It was absolutely necessary to modernize NAFTA for the 21st century. This week, after months of negotiations, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and representatives of the U.S. and Mexican governments hammered out the final details of the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA). It reestablished a smart and solid footing for all three peoples. In the next week, their agreement is scheduled to come up for debate on the House floor. I will vote for it. Here's why. USMCA will spur over $68 billion in new economic activity, creating over 176,000 new jobs after six years, including 76,000 new automotive sector jobs over five years, as well $34 billion in new auto plants born, in part, of a new rule that requires 76% of North American-made partsup from the current 62.5% for a vehicle to qualify for tariff protection when moving between the three countries. Our ag producers will be able to expand sales of American dairy, wheat, chicken, eggs, and turkey into the lucrative Canadian market. With defense cooperation like this, we can help them continue to enhance stability and security and combat terrorism on the African continent. On the eve of the National Guard's 383rd birthday, they are showing again that they are always ready, always there' in the homeland and around the world. The signing of this state partnership represents an exciting day for the Nebraska National Guard and Rwanda, said Senator Fischer. The State Partnership Program not only advances our shared security goals, it helps develop professional military leadership and provides a unique opportunity for cooperation between our two nations. This marks the 15th state partnership between the U.S. and an African nation, and I am confident that the Nebraska National Guard will provide a vital contribution to the continuation of U.S. defense cooperation within AFRICOM. Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) today announced that he had signed on to cosponsor H.R. 19, the Lower Costs, More Cures Act, which would lower costs at the drug counter for patients and seniors. These bipartisan reforms would lower out of pocket spending without crushing investment in the research and development of new cures, said Rep. Bacon. We need to strengthen transparency and champion competition, and not crush the innovation of possibly groundbreaking new cures for illnesses such as Alzheimer's, Sickle Cell, Cancer or ALS. H.R. 19 will: Cap seniors' out-of-pocket yearly costs at $3100, and also place a monthly cap for Medicare beneficiaries by spreading out the amount a patient owes throughout the year, to help better manage budgets for those living on a fixed income Require that information about drug costs be made available by insurance companies in the doctor's office before a prescription is written Bring more generic and biosimilar competition to the marketplace, increasing low-cost options Create stronger trade agreements and real enforcement mechanisms to ensure developed countries aren't unfairly benefitting from American medical innovation and paying lower prescription drug prices. While this bill will provide many benefits, the Congressional Budget Office says Speaker Pelosi's bill, H.R. 3, will limit cures and innovation. The CBO says that on the low end, 15 fewer cures could be developed if her bill passes because it could severely limit the ability of biopharmaceutical research to invest in future advancements ion biomedical innovations, said Rep. Bacon. One cure lost is too many and we simply cannot crush the hopes of patients who have been patiently waiting for that next breakthrough. The men and women at the DOJ and FBI who care about rebuilding trust have a lot of work to do. Senator Sasse pressed the IG on three of the Crossfire Hurricane team's inexcusable decisions that undermine public trust: the team's use of a defensive briefing as an investigative opportunity, the team's failure to follow FBI procedures and include relevant evidence in the FISA applications for renewed surveillance, and the team's use of former Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr as a conduit for Christopher Steele's reporting despite the fact that the FBI had decided to drop Steele as an informant. U.S. Senator Ben Sasse:There are a number of things that are really troubling but some of them have been unpacked pretty fully, so far. So, I'm going to pick up some loose ends. U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, today introduced the Real MEAT Act to end deceptive labeling practices for alternative protein products. The bill would clarify the definition of beef for labeling purposes, eliminateconsumer confusionresulting from misbranding, and ensure that the federal government is able to enforce the law. Beef is derived from cattleperiod. Under USDA, beef undergoes a rigorous inspection and labeling process, but plant-based protein products that mimic beef and are sometimes labeled as beef are overseen by the FDA instead. These products are not held to the same food safety and labeling standards as beef. Americans deserve to know what's on their dinner plate. The Real MEAT Act will protect consumers from deceptive marketing practices and bring transparency to the grocery store, said Senator Fischer. It's clear that fake-meat companies are continuing to mislead consumers about the nutritional merits and actual ingredient composition of their products. We commend the efforts of Senator Fischer on introducing this legislation, which would end deceptive labeling of fake meat products and allow cattle producers to compete on a level playing field, said National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) President Jennifer Houston. The Nebraska Cattlemen thank Senator Fischer for her leadership on the Real MEAT Act. Real beef, raised by actual farmers and ranchers in the state of Nebraska creates $13.8 billion total economic impact to our state. This bill prohibits federal regulators from arbitrarily forcing banking institutions to terminate their relationships with legal businesses solely because the operations of the businesses are not in line with the views of the contemporaneous administration. We're a nation of laws, said Sen. Sasse, and that means that Washington's bureaucracy can't put a wall between American businesses and their banks just because their private views aren't popular with powerful politicians. Back in 2013, President Obama's regulators went after law-abiding firearms businesses and we have to make sure that never happens again. That's exactly what this common-sense legislation would do. Under the previous administration, government officials at agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation abused their power to become a partisan arm of the administration, Sen. Cruz said. This bill safeguards the American people and small businesses from being unconstitutionally cut off from their financial institutions for not falling in line with the political whims and leanings of whoever is in control of the executive branch. The full text of the bill may be viewedhere. A summary is below: FinancialInstitutionCustomerProtection Act Summary This bill prohibits a federal banking agency from formally or informally suggesting, requesting, or ordering a depositoryinstitutionto terminate either a specificcustomeraccount, or group ofcustomeraccounts, or otherwise restrict or discourage it from entering into or maintaining a banking relationship with a specificcustomeror group ofcustomers, unless: The agency has a material reason to do so, and The reason is not based solely on reputation ris… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, released the following statement after the release of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) conference report. As a conferee, Senator Fischer worked to help ensure nearly $420 million in relief for Nebraska's defense equities was included in the conference agreement: Nebraska's military installations were severely damaged from this year's extreme weather. The nearly $420 million for Offutt Air Force Base and Camp Ashland I worked to include in the NDAA conference report is absolutely critical for our military and our state. This relief will help cover much-needed repairs and speed up recovery, allowing our men and women in uniform to continue fulfilling their vital missions. More information: The NDAA authorizes defense spending and sets the policy and priorities for our military. Included in the conference report, which precedes a final House and Senate vote, is $375 million to repair Offutt Air Force Base and replace damaged RC-135 mission equipment, as well as $43.5 million for the rebuilding of the Nebraska National Guard's Camp Ashland training facility. As the bill becomes more publicly available, Senator Fischer's office will provide more information on other provisions in the conference report. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

A massive trade deal is pending with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), prescription drug prices and health care costs continue to rise, and our southern border needs additional resources. In addition, to provide certainty for taxpayers families, farmers, ranchers, and businesses small and large we need to address the future of a number of expired and expiring tax provisions, fix certain technical issues with the tax code, and complete our work on some new proposals to help Americans save for retirement. Through my position as the Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, which writes tax policy for Congress, I have been working on a number of commonsense tax initiatives. For various reasons, whether to limit cost or provide time to find a permanent solution, tax provisions are sometimes enacted temporarily. For example, the Biodiesel Tax Credit which has played a significant role in growing domestic biodiesel production and consumption, expired in 2017. I have been working with both parties on the Biodiesel Tax Credit Extension Act, which would give producers much needed certainty by extending the expired Biodiesel Tax Credit and providing retroactive relief for the two years since it expired. The Medical Device Tax, which was created by Obamacare and would increase the cost of essential medical technologies like x-ray machines and hospital beds, is set to take effect after the end of this year. In addition to increasing health care costs, a revival of this tax would cost our economy 21,390 jobs and reduce GDP by $1.7 billion annually according to the non-partisan Tax Foundation. Also expiring at the end of the year is the delay of the Health Insurance Tax (HIT). The tax on health insurance would cost consumers $15.5 billion in 2020 alone. To keep these onerous taxes from going into effect, I have cosponsored the Protect Medical Innovation Act and the Protect Medical Innovation Act. While it makes vague allusions to Palestinian actions that are counter-productive to peaceful negotiations, it specifically highlights settlements and annexation on the part of Israel. It also states that ‘only’ a two-state solution can ensure Israel’s survival and fulfill Palestinian aspirations. He prescribed me an antibiotic. It's a common treatment for a particular ailment used throughout the world. I said, I have to know the cost before we go further. He said, It's minimal. Six dollars. Turns out, it was six dollars. In 2011. Now, it's $420. This unfair dynamic is not unique to me. Many other persons are being hit by the sky-high price of drugs. In one case of those suffering from type 1 diabetes, the costs can be life-threatening, forcing some to ration medicine and others to pay for drugs rather than electric bills. Big pharmaceutical companies and middle management responding to bad government policy have created the huge mess in this health care space. The average annual cost of a brand-name drug has more than tripled in the past decade. Families with diabetic children, seniors on Medicare, and others facing prohibitively high expenses for lifesaving drugs deserve better. One obvious solution is to accelerate generic drug approval. Drug companies, however, have a long history of slow walking the generic approval process through legal maneuvers, anti-competitive practices, and patent extensions. I help lead the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Through our focused efforts, the FDA is reforming the generic approval process. Cracking down harder on pharmaceutical companies who are exploiting loopholes to modify patents for not-so-unique drugs will also grow the generics market. Currently, even a small modification in a drug can be enough to get it approved by the Patent and Trademark Office. A 2018 analysis found that patent protection for 70% of the 100 best-selling drugs was extended at least once. This is a significant cost driver. According to the FDA, when generic competition exists, prices are often 80-85 percent less than brand-name drugs. With 90 percent of generic prescriptions available for less than $20 for patients with insurance, that translates into real savings for families an… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

And as we get closer to Christmas and New Years without a trade deal with Canada and Mexico the situation is getting bleaker. Let's be blunt about this: By needlessly stonewalling the USMCA trade agreement, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats are taking Nebraska agriculture hostage. This is petty, stupid politics at its worst. The USMCA trade deal is a free trade win for our farmers and ranchers and they desperately need this win right now. With hard work and grit, Nebraskans have cultivated one of the most powerful agricultural economies in the history of the world. We literally feed the world and we do it with free trade because we grow so much more food than we could ever consume. Unemployment is at a 50-year low, wages are rising, and the GDP has been even higher than projected. The longtime strength of our economy is dependent on many factors, including a strong belief in the rule of law and property rights, a commitment to hard work and ingenuity, and consistent access to numerous sources of energy needed to grow, manufacture, and transport products across our state, nation, and the world. Affordable energy directly impacts the everyday lives of Americans; driving our cars, heating our homes, watching television, and cooking our food, among countless other examples. Maintaining a healthy environment and a strong energy industry do not have to be mutually exclusive. The United States leads the world in efficient energy and energy science research. From 2005-2017, the United States reduced more carbon emissions than the next 12 countries combined. With an expanding market for efficient and environmentally-friendly energy, we have seen more focus on innovation and new technology for energy in the private sector. However, in the 116th Congress, we have also seen numerous efforts to implement one-size-fits-all mandates which could hamstring existing efforts. As we have seen with every other government interference in the marketplace, innovation would suffer significantly. In June, the House Budget Committee held a hearing on the Green New Deal an overreaching climate plan with an estimated $93 trillion price tag. One component of the Green New Deal calls for reducing carbon emissions with a massive overhaul of agricultural production. I cringe when I hear politicians in Washington tell farmers, whose land is their livelihood, to be better stewards of the environment. Families who have farmed the land for generations understand the importance of a healthy environment to feeding their neighbors and countrymen. In Nebraska the idea of restrictively … | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Horowitz Inspector General U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, D.C. 20530 Dear Mr. Horowitz, On Saturday, August 10, 2019, the day that serial child rapist and wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his cell, Attorney General Barr announced that you were opening an investigation into the circumstances of his death. Epstein's death in federal custody represents a colossal failure by the Department of Justice. As the kingpin of a child sex trafficking ring, Epstein possessed unique insight into the crimes of his friends and associates. That knowledge died with him, making it significantly harder to prosecute his co-conspirators. These wealthy and powerful men raped innocent children, and it is an outrage that the Department's inability to keep Epstein aliveafter a previous apparent suicide attemptmakes it less likely that these monsters can be brought to justice. The pain that this inflicts on these survivors is difficult to fathom. Moreover, these events have ignited a crisis of public trust in the Department and exacerbated the erosion of trust that the American pe… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Through all the disaster and tragedy, Nebraskans responded with kindness, bravery, and generosity. Adversity doesn't break us. Instead, it reveals our character, grit, and determination,Senator Fischer said in the video. Full video transcript: It is that time of year where we all gather with our friends and family to reflect on what we are thankful for. As we enjoy our food, football, and family traditions, Nebraskans are thinking about what a tough year it has been for many of our communities. This spring, portions of our state were hit with record-setting floods that destroyed many of our homes, business, and farmland. At the same time out West, extreme blizzard conditions created significant challenges for farmers and ranchers in that area. Generations of farmland was destroyed, bridges collapsed, and entire towns were cut off from the rest of the state. Later in the year our state was hit with more flooding, an irrigation tunnel collapse that affected the Panhandle, and a fire at a Kansas meat processing plant that shook the beef market. But through all the disaster and tragedy Nebraskans responded with kindness, bravery, and generosity. Adversity doesn't break us. Instead, it reveals our character, grit, and determination. When the Platte River overflowed, turning Fremont, Nebraska, into an island,Nebraska pilots joined together to fly in supplies and emergency aid. In the Cortland area, a member of the community died unexpectedly, and his friends and farmers in the area came out with their combines and grain carts to harvest the fields for his family. The cartels and gangs must know that the United States will respond to ensure they do not continue to threaten the American people." The Senators' letter is availablehereand found below. Dear Secretary Mnuchin, Secretary Pompeo, and Director Wray, We write to you regarding the horrific massacre of nine American women and children in northern Mexico on November 4. We mourn with the families who lost loved ones and demand justice. While we wait for these butchers to be identified and brought to justice, we ask that your departments proactively consider the full and creative use of existing sanction authority in response to this tragedy to be implemented upon public attribution of the massacre. We are encouraged to hear that the Mexican government has requested the as… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

It is hard to fathom the pain, suffering, and losses the Yazidis have endured. Five years after the genocide, the community remains shattered and deserted. Most of its homes and farmland were destroyed. The number of boys and men who were summarily slaughtered is estimated at 7,000 to 10,000, and nearly 400,000 Yazidis continue to languish in camps. Thousands, including women and children, suffer from complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). Thousands of women were raped, many repeatedly, while thousands of others were sold as sex slaves. The many thousands who have been injured are still in desperate need of medical treatment. Alas, there seems to be no end in sight to the Yazidis' unfolding crisis, as they are now living in extreme anxiety and fear, not knowing what tomorrow will bring. Marginal Help Many individuals and a few countries have made efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Yazidis. A Yazidi who lived in Iraq and was an interpreter for the U.S. Army in Iraq co-founded Yazda, a U.S. nongovernmental organization that supports the Yazidi community. A group of Israelis, led by Ari Zivotofsky and Yaakov Hoffman, with the support of Bar Ilan University, brought 16 women to Israel for training on how to treat women back home who suffer from CPTSD. Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman who co-won the Nobel Peace Prize, continues to work relentlessly to bring the plight of her people to the attention of the international community. Germany provided invaluable assistance by accepting more than 1,100 women and children who had been rescued, and in Armenia, another country that understands the meaning of genocide, some 50,000 Yazidis found a second homeland. They recently opened Quba Mere Diwane, the largest Yazidi temple in the world, in Aknalich, Armenia. Yazidis are represented in the Armenian parliament. Canada has also helped, offering itself as a haven for Yazidi wom… | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

The results are clear: Hong Kongers reject the Chinese Communist Party's oppression and intimidation. Chairman Xi and his corrupt elites in Beijing know this and are terrified of the courage that Hong Kong has shown. The American people are on the side of these freedom seekers. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z

Nebraskans are pro-life, pro-woman, pro-baby, and pro-science. Pro-lifers don't have Planned Parenthood's government subsidies or their lawyer armies, but we do have something more important: love and compassion for every mom and her baby which is why pro-lifers are winning. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
| https://adriansmith.house.gov/newsroom/columns/coming-together-thanksgiving | Coming Together on Thanksgiving | 2019-11-22 | 2019 | 2019-11 | Republican | House | NE | Adrian Smith | S001172 | adriansmith.house.gov | legacy | Because we are so busy in our daily lives, Thanksgiving provides an important opportunity every November to gather with family and friends and show gratitude for all God has provided us. After a year full of challenges, it is important to take a step back and reflect. Nebraskans have each other to be thankful for during this tough year. In 2019, we experienced historic floods, an irrigation tunnel collapse, record snowfall, cattle losses, and a problematic planting season. Through it all the Nebraska spirit has never diminished. Time and again Nebraskans have come together, given a helping hand, and comforted their neighbors in need. There have been great examples throughout the year of Nebraskan compassion for others. During the aftermath of the March flood, entire communities came together to fill sandbags, open shelters, and rescue neighbors in danger. The North Central Sports Club made up of student-athletes from Rock County and Keya Paha County donated the funds for their annual spring trip to help with the recovery of their community. The generosity of these students, along with the hard work and dedication of so many friends and neighbors made me proud to call myself a Nebraskan. Nebraska can be an example for the entire country. We find ourselves in a hyperpolitical and divided moment in our nation. Regardless of your view point, we must not lose sight on what defines our country. We can be thankful in America we have the ability to address our differences with each other peacefully. In other areas of the world, political disputes often lead to violence. Within the last two months, there have been violent protests in Hong Kong, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Iraq, and Iran. The core values of our republic are what separates our nation from so many others. We are also thankful for the men and women in uniform to whom we owe our freedom and our exceptional way of life. Our rights and liberties are preserved because these extraordinary Americans choose to put their lives on the line for our nation.
