Jain was selected by a panel of judges for her app, EcoFriend. “After reviewing many incredible submissions from students across the South Sound, I congratulate Anusha for winning the Congressional App Challenge,” said Strickland. “This thoughtful app is the user’s own guide to how they can care for the environment. I look forward to seeing the cover photo on display as I walk around the Capitol. Thank you to our judges and all the students who participated.” “EcoFriend teaches you how you can help save the environment. We all share one big planet Earth, and sometimes…that can be a big problem,” said Jain. “Trash on roads, plastic in rivers, cutting down of trees …the list goes on and on. It is our duty, as residents of Mother Earth, to protect our environment from getting dirtier and dirtier every day. That’s why I created EcoFriend, your personal guide to keeping the environment just the way it deserves to be.” “I was delighted to participate in the App Challenge, and I am very impressed at the high quality of submissions whose aim is to make the world a better place. I am thrilled that Congresswoman Strickland is a keen supporter of STEM initiatives such as the App Challenge, something that is also close to my heart,” said Dr. Radana Dvorak, Chair of Computer Science at St. Martin’s University. “As an educator and computer scientist, I see the value of younger students, especially girls, starting to explore computer science and engineering fields before starting college. I would be delighted to see all four finalists come to Saint Martin’s University, study in my computer science department, and join our Women In Technology (WIT) club.” “STEM is more crucial than ever in our increasingly digital world. I enjoyed being a judge for all the impressive apps that were submitted. Apps like EcoFriend not only demonstrate the great… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:32:05Z

The government funding package provides historic investments for workers, families, and communities across the country. Importantly, this package includes over $24 million for projects that Rep. Smith successfully secured in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 appropriations process, which will help fund 15 community projects across Washington's Ninth District. "This year's government funding package not only allows us to make good on our commitments to keep the government open and running smoothly, but also provides additional funding to bolster important social and economic programs that make us stronger as a nation. In negotiating this package, we were able to secure many important victories on health care which will expand access to affordable, quality health care, expand mental health care services, and advance research and development that will lead to future scientific breakthroughs. This funding package will also allow us to send more crucial military, humanitarian, and economic aid to Ukraine as they continue their fight for democracy. There are many things to be proud of in this bill, but I am especially excited about the funding that will go directly towards community projects in the Ninth District. These projects will invest in affordable housing and health care, workforce development, public safety, small business, local economy, and more and will uplift the most vulnerable and underserved individuals and families in our region. Thanks to the tireless work of community leaders and organizations in our district, these projects will undoubtedly make our community a better place to live. I look forward to these federal dollars coming to Washington's Ninth." See below for more informat… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:32:05Z

DelBene D000617 delbene.house.gov delbene https://delbene.house.gov/news/documentquery.aspx?DocumentTypeID=27 scraper Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) introduced the Email Privacy Act, legislation that would create 21st Century protections for personal emails and other digital records. Currently, law enforcement can seize any email older than 180 days without a warrant. The bill would require law enforcement to obtain a warrant to access emails and other digital records and allow providers to notify customers when government agencies request their data. “Updating our laws to reflect the way the world works in the 21st Century is one of my top priorities in Congress. When laws protect a letter in a filing cabinet more than an email on a server, it’s clear our policies are woefully outdated,” said DelBene. “The Email Privacy Act is a powerful step forward toward modernizing Americans’ civil liberties.” DelBene is a champion of broader personal data privacy and updating antiquated technology laws. She sponsored the Information Transparency and Personal Data Control Act (H.R. 1816), which would give people control over their most sensitive information. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:32:05Z

While I am pleased many of these have been included in this year’s omnibus, such as funding for critical agriculture research, Hanford Site cleanup, and the Columbia Basin Project, congressional Democrats manipulated the timeframe so they could insert a number of poison pills behind closed doors in the bloated 1.7 trillion-dollar omnibus that made it impossible for me to vote for it in good conscience. House Democrats have spent more than $3 trillion outside of the normal appropriations process, fueling the skyrocketing cost of living Americans across Central Washington are struggling to deal with. This bill doubles down on this approach by giving substantial increases to non-defense programs and doesn’t just fail to address the ever-worsening crisis at our southern border, but actually spends taxpayer dollars to incentivize illegal immigration. At the same time, House Democrats failed to provide Members with time to review the over 4,000-page bill or include common-sense provisions, such as my legislation that would alleviate our food supply chain crisis and the increasing food costs Americans are facing by addressing our agriculture labor shortage. Ultimately, this bill will only make our inflationary crisis worse, doing far more harm than good for the people of Central Washington, which is why I was a strong NO.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:32:05Z

The bill does this by allowing states to use federal funds to buy nutritious food from local farmers for distribution at nearby emergency feeding organizations. “Farmers in my district are facing high costs and difficulty getting goods to market at the same time as families right down the road are struggling to put food on the table. This just doesn’t make sense. We all want farmers to thrive and get their high-quality products to more families but participating in big government programs can be overwhelming and difficult,” Rep. Schrier said. “When the demand for food banks skyrocketed during the pandemic, we found new and innovative ways to provide those in need with hearty and healthy foods while making it easier for local farmers to participate. Some residents in the Maple Valley/Covington region haven’t had mail delivery in several weeks. And the post office in Cle Elum was forced to move to a trailer earlier this year after a sewer line broke and asbestos was found in the building. In the letter, Rep. Schrier urges Postmaster General DeJoy to take action to prevent mail delivery disruptions and to get the post office in Cle Elum moved to a safe, indoor location as soon as possible. The letter reads as follows: Dear Postmaster DeJoy and Director Simpson, I am writing to highlight two urgent issues facing postal operations in my district. The first is the ongoing challenges with mail delivery in the Covington/Maple Valley area, located southeast of Seattle. My constituents rely on dependable mail delivery for their medications, paychecks, and other vital services. This particular area contains a mix of suburban, rural and exurban neighborhoods, where regular mail service is particularly vital. For this community, it is essential that their post office meets the highest service standards. Starting November 29th, my office began to hear from constituents whose subdivision in Maple Valley had not received mail that week. My District staff promptly reached out to local USPS representatives and followed up several times in late November and early December receiving insufficient or no responses. Since this lapse in service was first brought to my attention, it has even garnered local media attention. Twenty-three days later, my constituents are still missing checks, medication, and holiday presents. Unfortunately, this issue appears to be a pattern for the postal district. Nearly a year ago, my constituents experienced very similar mail delivery issues impacting residents in the Sumner and Covington region. In my district alone, there are nearly 50 water infrastructure projects that desperately need our attention. I fought for this new authority for the four counties in my district so local governments can leverage the expertise of the Army Corps of Engineers and access federal resources to improve our communities.” Background: This new $200 million environmental infrastructure assistance authority includes a 75-25 federal cost-share for projects and the ability for smaller communities to leverage the expertise of the Army Corps of Engineers in improving their water infrastructure. "Somalia is facing a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by protracted armed conflict. The security situation in Somalia remains extremely fraught, as Al-Shabaab continues to threaten the stability and safety of Somalia. Violence is rampant, with the highest number of recorded civilian casualties since 2017 according to the UN. An estimated 40 percent of the population, or 6.1 million people, are left hungry due to the drought and soaring inflation," the members wrote. "A designation of TPS for Somalia is in line with U.S. commitments to the nation and its people," wrote the members. "An estimated 400 beneficiaries are on the verge of losing their work authorization and facing deportation if the administration fails to extend the designation. Deportation would not only threaten the safety of these individuals but would also have devastating consequences for U.S.-citizen children of Somali TPS holders. Parents would have to make the impossible choice of whether to leave their child behind in the U.S. or take them back to dangerous conditions in Somalia," the members concluded. The designation of TPS for Somalia is set to expire on March 17, 2023, with a decision date on January 16, 2023. Working with our allies and partners to expand trade in these products, with a view to negotiating a new environmental goods agreement, is an opportunity to create U.S. jobs, keep us competitive against China, and support U.S. allies.” Key Action Items in this resolution: Encourage the United States Trade Representative to engage with U.S. trade allies and identify U.S. goods that would have a positive impact on the environment if trade in those goods increased. Facilitate trade in environmental goods by updating the list of 303 environmental products that was developed during previous negotiations that ended in 2016. In a bipartisan letter to the Secretaries of Defense and State, the lawmakers call for greater oversight and transparency around the process that allows retired military officials to work for foreign governments or firms controlled by foreign governments. “The public has a compelling interest in understanding the extent of influence that foreign powers may have over America’s former military leaders,” the lawmakers wrote. “The public also has the right to know if high-ranking retired military officers are taking advantage of their roles in government to create employment opportunities, some paying seven figure salaries, with foreign governments.” Under current law, retired or reserve military officials who want to work for a foreign government or receive gifts, payments, or other items of value from a foreign state must first obtain approval from the secretary of their military branch and the Department of State. This provision still applies to retired military personnel given they remain subject to recall into active duty. DelBene D000617 delbene.house.gov delbene https://delbene.house.gov/news/documentquery.aspx?DocumentTypeID=27 scraper Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) introduced the Developing Alternative Mitigation Systems (DAMS) for Beavers Act, legislation that would help protect public infrastructure and private property from beaver damage while supporting non-lethal mitigation alternatives for these important animals and saving taxpayers money. Beavers play a critical role in shaping the environment, providing several ecological benefits ranging from improved water storage and filtration to the creation of suitable habitats for endangered and vulnerable species, including salmon. However, beaver activity can cause substantial private property damage and harm to public infrastructure such as roads, railroads, levees, and dams. As a result, the federal government and private trappers kill tens of thousands of beavers each year even though these lethal control methods are ineffective because the impacted areas are quickly recolonized by beavers searching for new environments. These methods are also unnecessary, since non-lethal mitigation methods, such as water flow control devices and mesh fencing, are often more effective at addressing impacts to infrastructure and property. The DAMS for Beavers Act would provide $1 million annually through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for non-lethal beaver mitigation efforts. State and federal agencies, local governments, Tribes, landowners, and nonprofits would all be eligible to receive funding. These investments have been proven to save taxpayers money: A study in Virginia compared the costs of repairing road damage caused by beavers at 14 sites before and after using flow devices. The state transportation department saved hundreds of thousands of dollars per year with the non-lethal method. Specifically, the ‘before’ costs were more than $300,000 per year, which included preventive road maintenance, damage repairs, and lethal removal of beavers. The cost of installing flow devices was less than $45,000 and maintenance costs were $277 per year. A 20-year project in Billerica, Massa… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:32:05Z

DelBene D000617 delbene.house.gov delbene https://delbene.house.gov/news/documentquery.aspx?DocumentTypeID=27 scraper Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404), which will enshrine historic safeguards for same-sex and interracial marriages into law. The legislation is important and timely after the Supreme Court’s dangerous decision earlier this year overturning Roe v. Wade, the longstanding decision that provided federal protections for abortion access. While the court’s decision did not directly target marriage equality, Justice Thomas expressed interest in revisiting cases that uphold these fundamental rights for American families. “Love is love. Couples that are building their lives, families, and futures together should have certainty that the federal government will recognize and respect them. Ever since the Supreme Court’s conservative majority took away the right of women to choose if and when they want to have a child, many across the country have worried what rights could be taken away next.” said DelBene. “This historic, bipartisan step will provide same-sex and interracial couples the same certainty and protections that all families deserve. There should be no second-class relationships in this country.” The Respect for Marriage Act: Repeals the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act. Although this law was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decisions, it remains on the books. Enacting the Respect for Marriage Act finally erases the discriminatory law from U.S. law. Protects marriage equality by ensuring that for federal law purposes people are considered married if the marriage was valid in the state where it was performed. Rick Larsen (WA-02) introduced the Protecting America from Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza Act (“The Influenza Act”) to bolster the federal response to seasonal and pandemic influenza as seasonal flu rates continue to rise in the Pacific Northwest and across the country. CDC estimates there have been at least 8.7 million illnesses, 78,000 hospitalizations and 4,500 deaths from flu this season. Reps. Deborah Ross (NC-02), Ami Bera (CA-07), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-At-Large) signed on as original cosponsors of the bill. “Getting the flu can mean missed time with loved ones, lost time at work and school, and long-term health and financial consequences. Congress must make a strong investment in seasonal and pandemic flu infrastructure to keep people healthy and safe and ensure the country is ready to tackle the next public health emergency,” said Larsen. The Coalition to Stop Flu expressed its support for the Influenza Act. “For far too long, our country has seemingly accepted tens of thousands of annual deaths from flu as inevitable,” said former Senate Majority Leader and Chairman of the Coalition to Stop Flu Tom Daschle. “And pandemic influenza remains an extraordinary threat to our nation’s health and prosperity. More can, and must, be done. The Influenza Act provides commonsense solutions to improve our ability to prepare for and respond to seasonal and pandemic flu.” What the Influenza Act Does According to CDC, vaccines are the best way to protect against flu and are proven to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization and death. The Influenza Act would build on the National Influenza Vaccine Modernization Strategy, as well as lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, to increase access to vaccines and therapeutics, strengthen and diversify vaccine development, manufacturing and supply chains, and promote research and development of new technologies to detect, prevent and respond to flu. The NDAA is Congress’ bill to maintain military readiness and increase national security. The legislation includes Rep. Schrier’s amendment to improve child care for families of servicemembers so they can be dependably service-ready. It now heads to the Senate and then the President’s desk to be signed into law. “This bill provides key investments to strengthen national security, support those who protect our country, and help defend Ukrainian democracy. Families across the country continue to feel squeezed by rising costs, and I’m glad that the bill will raise pay and benefits for servicemembers,” said Rep. Schrier. “The brave men and women who work tirelessly to protect our country have earned these benefits.” Rep. Schrier’s amendment will help improve military families’ access to child care. The Congresswoman worked with Washington State Military Family Childcare Workgroup, composed of representatives from the Department of Defense, military installations, Child Care Aware of Washington, Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington, YMCA of Washington, local school districts, and child care providers, on this amendment to help expand quality child care access for military families. “Child care costs and access are the last thing our servicemembers should have to be concerned with,” Rep. In a letter, the lawmakers requested provisions that would strengthen and expand the Housing Credit be included in a potential year-end legislative package to increase affordable housing production and lower costs for American families. The Housing Credit is our nation’s most effective and successful tool for building and preserving affordable housing. Since its creation in 1986, the program has financed more than 3.6 million affordable housing units —nearly 90 percent of all federally-funded affordable housing during that time. The letter calls on House Leadership to include two provisions from the bipartisan Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act that would increase affordable housing production: Extend the 12.5 percent Housing Credit allocation that expired at the end of 2021. These resources can be deployed immediately allowing ready-to-go developments to move forward. Lower the “50 percent test” to 25 percent to increase Housing Credit access. This would allow all states to more efficiently use their Private Activity Bond cap and unlock resources for states to complete hundreds of thousands of additional shovel-ready developments. The provisions outlined in the letter would build or preserve more than 1.5 million additional affordable homes. “We cannot ignore this crucial area of our economy, and the working families, veterans, seniors, and low-income families who will be able to afford their homes during this time and in the years ahead because of the Housing Credit,” the lawmakers wrote. “By enacting these provisions, we can have a huge, positive impact on affordable housing production.” The letter was signed by Jake Auchincloss (MA-04), Don Bacon (NE-02), Troy Balderson (OH-12), Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Jack Bergman (MI-01), Don Beyer (VA-08), Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-At-Large), Suzanne Bon… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:24:37Z

The members asked that the FTC investigate the merger between the two supermarket chains for the effect it will have on competition in the market. This comes after Rep. Smith sent a letter on November 3 to Kroger and Albertsons raising his concerns about the merger's impact on consumers and workers in Washington state. The members wrote, "Kroger's proposed acquisition of Albertsons presents several anticompetitive concerns. For consumers, the consolidated grocery chain could offer fewer product choices and higher costs for essential goods. For workers, the acquisition could impair bargaining power for fair wages and safe working conditions in local communities. For small- and medium-sized grocers, this acquisition could diminish their already strained resources and drive up supply costs." "Close and skeptical investigation of this transaction is consistent with Section 7 of the Clayton Act, which prohibits any acquisition the effect of which "may be substantially to lessen competition, or to tend to create a monopoly" in "any line of commerce or in any activity affecting commerce."[38] As indicated, this transaction has the potential to lessen competition in consumer, labor, and supply markets. This transaction could raise prices and limit options for essential goods," the members continued. "We are at a critical moment in our country where we have the evidence and the opportunity to address corporate consolidation not only through a consumer-oriented lens, but also through the lens of labor, equity, upstream supply, and small business. The Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (PURPA) prohibits electric utilities from shutting off home electricity for overdue bills when doing so would be dangerous for someone’s health. This legislation would clarify that extreme hot and cold weather events are covered by PURPA. Currently, 19 states have shutoff moratoriums for both cold and hot weather, 22 states have only cold weather shutoff moratoriums, including Washington state, and 9 states have neither. This bill would ensure that all states have these life-saving utility shutoff protections. Washington state has seen increased instances of extreme weather in recent years. 157 people died in the 2021 heat wave, called the deadliest weather-related event in state history. “As extreme weather events across America are becoming more frequent and severe, we must protect families from having their electricity shut off during these dangerous incidents,” said DelBene. “Right now, only 19 states currently have these protections for both cold and heat, and Washington only has protections for cold weather. This legislation will help ensure families in every state have these lifesaving protections.” “We know that one of the most frightening scenarios that families across the United States can experience is having their utilities shut off in the face of extreme weather events. As these events become more severe and more frequent - Congress must step up to help protect American families from the dangers of those potential shutoffs,” said Blunt Rochester. “That’s why I’m proud to partner with Rep. https://strickland.house.gov/2022/11/15/media-press-releases-strickland-calls-full-restoration-basic-allowance-housing-bah-servicemembers/ Strickland Calls For Full Restoration Of Basic Allowance For Housing (BAH) For Servicemembers 2022-11-15 2022 2022-11 Democrat House WA Marilyn Strickland S001159 strickland.house.gov strickland https://strickland.house.gov/category/press_release/ scraper Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) urged Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to fully restore the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for servicemembers after the Department cut the BAH to 95 percent. Strickland was joined by 58 of her colleagues. “Access to affordable housing is the top concern I hear from servicemembers and their families, especially at Joint Base Lewis-McChord,” said Strickland. “We must do what we can to address this quality of life issue for those who serve.” Decreasing BAH makes it hard for servicemembers and their families to pay for housing costs. In the 2021 Blue Star Families Military Lifestyle Survey, 76% of military families that have out of pocket expenses spend over $200 a month above their BAH on housing. The full letter text can be found below andhere. Dear Secretary Austin, We are writing to strongly encourage you to immediately restore the full Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) to support servicemembers and their families. The House Report of the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) notes that the availability and cost of housing is of greatest concern to military families, and directs the Department of Defense (DOD) to examine restoring 100 percent BAH across the board. This report is due by March 1, 2023. The FY15 NDAA (P.L. 113-291) gave the Department the authority to reduce BAH in certain circumstances. In 2015, DOD reduced the proportion of money given to servicemembers to 95% of calculated BAH. This was defined as a cost-saving measure to “balance the growth in compensation costs.” While the Department believes that imposing a 5% cost share shouldn’t financially burden military families, several studies have shown that this reduction harms the well-being of servicemembers who live off and on military installations. Servicemembers and their families should not have to shoulder the burden of DOD’s cost savings. Newhouse. “My constituents and I have consistently opposed proposals to do so under multiple administrations because introducing an apex predator to the area would threaten the families, wildlife, and livestock of North Central Washington. It is disappointing that local voices are once again being ignored by federal bureaucrats, even after the last process was discontinued due to overwhelming local opposition. I strongly encourage the people of Central Washington to attend the virtual meetings in order to voice their opinion and put this misguided proposal to rest, once and for all.” The National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are hosting a series of four virtual public meetings to discuss grizzly bear restoration during the Public Scoping period, which runs from November 10-December 14, 2022. In the letter, Rep. Smith outlines his concerns about the impact this merger will have on consumers and workers in Washington state. "At a time when grocery prices have increased, further consolidation in a market that is already highly concentrated raises serious concerns. I believe it is imperative that ample time is given to investigate the effects this merger may have on consumer prices, food access for consumers, and wages and employment for workers," wrote Rep. Smith. Rep. Smith continued, "Albertsons employs thousands of workers who have raised reasonable fears that the dividend payment will lead to accelerated store closures and layoffs. The $4 billion payment represents approximately a third of Albertsons' market capitalization that could be put into worker wages and store improvements to keep the chain competitive. I am particularly worried about the pressure that places on local stores to lower wages and slash benefits for workers." Rep. Smith concluded, "I represent a district with a high concentration of Albertsons and Kroger stores. In several neighborhoods, the two chains are each other's biggest competitors. The merger process may be substantially disruptive to many of my constituents. I firmly believe that this merger should be fully reviewed prior to any major shareholder payout." Jim Costa (D-CA), Tracey Mann (R-KS), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Ashley Hinson (R-IA), Cindy Axne (D-IA), and Kim Schrier (D-WA). This legislation would increase funding to successful U.S. Department of Agriculture export promotion programs, the Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development Program (FMDP), and help American farmers maintain an edge in the increasingly competitive global marketplace. “Farmers and ranchers in Central Washington and across the country rely on programs like the Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development Program to help expand their customer base and market their products abroad,” said Rep. Newhouse. “By investing further in these programs, we can help strengthen our nation’s agriculture industry and create more good-paying jobs at home while enabling customers around the globe to enjoy Washington’s high-quality, nutritious products.” “Opening and growing new markets for American-made products is critical to building our agricultural economy,” said Rep. Costa. “Food is a global security issue, and we must do all we can to reverse disruptions in trade and grow new partnerships that help deliver American products around the world.” “Trade promotion is an essential function of a strong Farm Bill,” said Rep. Mann. “The return on investment from private sector contributions, which accounted for roughly 75% of export promotion between 2013 and 2019, is unparalleled. The SMART Act will help agricultural trade associations as they work tirelessly to ensure that American producers remain competitive in the international marketplace.” “Many people involved in our country’s agriculture depend on programs like the Market Access Program and the Foreign Market Development Program to reach new markets abroad and grow their businesses at home,” said Rep. Newhouse was joined by Central Washington producers Kristin Kershaw of Superfresh Growers, Tony Freytag of Crunchpak, Jason Sheehan of J&K Dairy, and Mark Powers of Northwest Horticultural Council. “The Central Washington farmer really understands what it means to have job vacancies. Each year, thousands of productive acres of farmland are taken out of production and many crops are unable to be harvested due to higher labor costs, unavailable labor, and increasing regulatory burdens,” said Kristin Kershaw. “The Farm Workforce Modernization Act gives us an opportunity to change that, reduce food waste, and secure our nation’s food future.” “Today, produce prices are up anywhere from 10 to 17 percent over the past year and farmers of all sizes are going out of business,” said Tony Freytag. “Congressman Newhouse is making a very simple request. And that’s for the Senate to work on the bill, because we all will feel the effects if nothing happens.” “Like all of agriculture, we are in a shortage of good employees to be able to produce the nutritious products that we need to every day. Dairy operates 24/7, 365 through every holiday there is, and up to this point the dairy community has not had the ability to use the H-2A program because it’s not been opened up to us. In the letter, the lawmakers noted that the Bolt Creek Fire burned over 14,000 acres along U.S. Highway 2, a key connector in Washington state that carries 3.6 million tons of freight each year and is traveled by over 22,000 vehicles daily. A USFS post-burn analysis found that a significant amount of watershed areas have burned and that 47 percent of acres burned have a high risk of erosion. “These factors are likely to result in multiple high risk hazards throughout the US-2 corridor, including high magnitude of consequence events such as runoff, road washout, debris flows, tree and rock falls, snags, and decreased hydrologic function that can all have consequences to our communities, culture, and economy in the Pacific Northwest,” the lawmakers wrote to Chief Moore. “Winter weather is fast approaching, likely resulting in increased precipitation and other weather events that can induce geo-hazards under these conditions. We request the immediate treatment of these USFS lands under the Burned Area Rehabilitation Program. Early action is critical to preventing harm to local communities, Washington state, and commerce throughout the Pacific Northwest and the nation.” Yesterday, DelBene, Cantwell, and Schrier held a rountable discussion in Sultan, WA, with local leaders, transportation experts, firefighters, and business owners. The Manufacturing Jobs for Veterans Act of 2022 would provide $50 million in U.S. Department of Labor grants to three states to establish veterans manufacturing employment pilot programs to support covered trainings and apprenticeships from employers and labor-management organizations for veterans. “Our veterans represent a vital pipeline of skilled, capable workers, yet far too many are unable to find work after returning to civilian life. As long as there are veterans without work, Congress must do more,” DelBene said. “The Manufacturing Jobs for Veterans Act will honor veterans’ service to our nation by providing them with the training to leverage their talents to find long-term, good-paying manufacturing jobs.” “Quality manufacturing jobs and apprenticeships can change lives and put families on a path to long-term financial security,” said Bonamici. “I’m pleased to join Congresswoman DelBene in leading legislation to make these opportunities available to more veterans as they further their careers.” While the veteran unemployment rate has gone down from 12.1% at the peak of the pandemic, over 61% of veterans are overqualified for their current jobs given their military-learned skills and military service experiences. The discrepancy in unemployment between states is also particularly troubling. Veteran employment rates can be as low as 1.6 percent in some states and 7.6 percent in others. Across all age groups, more than 380,000 unemployed veterans were struggling to find work in 2021. At the same time, there are at least 790,000 American manufacturing job openings each month. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) joined House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and 129 of his colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden urging the President to reverse his anti-American energy policies and issue a five-year offshore oil and natural gas leasing plan as is required under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA), after Interior Secretary Deb Haaland let the previous five-year plan expire. The letter highlights how driving more investment into United States' energy sector would lower gas and electricity prices for struggling families and guarantee a steady flow of American energy into the future. “We write to express our deep concern with your ongoing war on American energy. Unfortunately, since taking office, you have fulfilled your campaign promises to shut down American oil and gas production. As a result, America is no longer energy independent, and our nation is less secure. In order to reduce the dramatically higher energy costs your actions have placed on hard-working families, we strongly request you reverse course and work with us to unleash American energy. Specifically, we ask you to take immediate action by issuing a five-year leasing plan that includes regular annual lease sales in America’s offshore areas,” wrote the lawmakers. They continued, “To be clear, already sky-high energy prices will likely worsen unless you immediately reverse course and drastically increase exploration, leasing, and production of oil and natural gas here at home. And keep in mind your extremist policies are hurting low and middle-income families the hardest.” The lawmakers concluded, “The American people have suffered long enough because of your destructive energy policies. We must do everything we can to avoid a future like the one we are seeing in Europe by increasing our investments in American energy, where we have the highest standards in the world. It is time to unleash our nation's vast energy resources and give the American people the relief that is desperately needed.”… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:20:33Z

Scott Peters (D-CA) introduced the Root & Stem Act with the support of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. The legislation provides the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management with a clear statutory tool to treat forests more efficiently and empower collaborative processes through “Root & Stem” projects. “I have seen firsthand how these collaborative projects can benefit both local economies and the environment,” said Rep. Newhouse. “By encouraging ‘Root & Stem’ projects, we can ensure more effective stewardship of our resources and desperately-needed management of our forests. I am proud to partner with Representative Peters to introduce this bipartisan legislation because it is a necessary step in reversing decades of mismanagement and restoring healthy federal forests.” The Root & Stem Act provides statutory authority to federal agencies to increase collaboration with states, local communities, tribes, and private industry through stewardship agreements like the A to Z Project in the Colville National Forest. This legislation will allow the agencies to accomplish more hazardous fuels reduction and empower the agencies to engage with state, local, and tribal partners to ensure forest management projects compliment ongoing conservation efforts, benefit communities, and protect local ecosystems. "The Colville Tribes appreciates Congressman Newhouse's continued efforts to increase the pace and scale of forest management on our federal lands,” said Jarred-Michael Erickson, Chairman, Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. “The Root & Stem Act would ensure collaborative work supported by local communities can be carried out in a timely manner and would provide the Secretary discretion to use receipts to cover the costs of planning and restoration that otherwise would be limited by agency budgets. This law is helping us better prepare for and mitigate future disasters by equipping communities with the tools, resources, and information they need to protect lives and property. This strategy is a major step in implementing this law and I will keep working with federal agencies to ensure timely implementation of the other provisions,” said DelBene. “The next natural disaster should not become our next national tragedy.” “We may not be able to stop landslides from happening, but we can help reduce their impact,” said Jonathan Godt, program coordinator for the USGS Landslide Hazards Program. “By bringing everyone together from state, local and Tribal governments; colleges and universities; and private, community-based, and non-profit organizations, we can lower the risk landslides pose to people and property.” There are four key goals to this comprehensive strategy: Assess – Ensure that decision-makers have access to detailed, consistent, and relevant information about landslide hazards and risks across the country. Coordinate – Enable effective coordination of landslide-hazard response, mitigation, and recovery efforts across federal, state, Tribal, and local authorities. While the report claims to support efforts to “ensure a reliable, affordable, and carbon-free energy supply,” it also explicitly calls for the removal of the four Lower Snake River dams. Let me be clear: there is no clean energy future in Washington State and throughout the Pacific Northwest without these hydroelectric dams. The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), who failed to take input from the men and women who would be most impacted by its recommendations in their draft report back in July, have once again ignored the input and the voices of the majority of stakeholders across the Columbia Basin and the Pacific Northwest. The release of this report, and the Biden Administration’s process in compiling it, is a signal to Central Washington that the Biden Administration is playing politics with its energy future while ignoring recent data showing Spring and Summer chinook returns at higher levels than they have been in years. Factors like ocean conditions, predation, and others need to be considered and would be considered if this was a serious rulemaking process with an official public comment period, Congressional input, and coordination with other federal agencies who would be severely impacted by the outcomes this report suggests. The silver lining here is that this is not a serious rulemaking process. Indeed, in their final report, NOAA acknowledges that the greatest threats to our salmon population are ocean and climate conditions, acknowledges that the report lacks “precise measures or quantitative estimates of the magnitude of biological benefit expected” from these recommended actions, and acknowledges that it has yet to identify “what factors are responsible for [the] low survival rates [of juvenile salmon and steelhead].” To make such drastic recommendations on the basis of such uncertainty is ludicrous, yet par for the course for thi… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

The House unanimously approved the legislation by voice vote this afternoon. Earlier in the day, the bill passed the Senate unanimously. It now goes to President Biden for his signature. The bill temporarily lifts tariffs on safe imported ‘base powder,’ a key component filled with essential proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that is mixed with nutrients and other ingredients to make the formula that parents buy on store shelves or online. The current tariffs are 13.6% + $1.035/kg. The bill was introduced on Monday by House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Member Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Chairman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Ranking Member Adrian Smith (NE-03), and Members John B. Larson (CT-01), Dan Kildee (MI-05), and Drew Ferguson (GA-03). Its champions in the Senate include Senators Mike Lee (UT), Todd Young (IN), Mike Braun, and Bob Menendez (NJ). “The passage of this legislation today is a huge win for families and will be a powerful tool in addressing the ongoing baby formula shortage. This measure, combined with the Formula Act that Congress approved in July, will help get more safe, affordable formula on store shelves and increase domestic production capacity,” said the House leads DelBene, Blumenauer, Smith, Larson, Kildee, Ferguson. “We thank our colleagues in the House and Senate for their overwhelming bipartisan support on this measure. This shows how we can put families first and show Americans governance can work for them.” Nationally, the out-of-stock rate for formula is 61%, down from its May high of 86% but still an unacceptable level for parents who need to feed their children. This proposed rule would effectively force publicly traded companies to require small, independent, family farms to report on-farm data regarding individual operations and day-to-day activities, hindering the ability of American farmers and ranchers to compete in global markets and creating onerous compliance requirements for operations with few or no employees. The Protect Farmers from the SEC Act would prohibit the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from requiring an issuer of securities to disclose greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from upstream and downstream activities in the issuer’s value chain arising from farms and ranches. “Farmers in Central Washington and across the country are struggling due to overreaching regulations, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and skyrocketing inflation. Imposing even more regulations on the men and women who produce the food for our families would be devastating at any time, but it may well cripple the entire industry when food prices are already at a 40-year high,” said Rep. Schrier Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Offset Child Care Costs for Student Parents 2022-09-29 2022 2022-09 Democrat House WA Kim Schrier S001216 schrier.house.gov schrier https://schrier.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, DC – Today U.S. Representatives Kim Schrier, M.D. (D-WA) and Peter Meijer (R-MI) introduced the Tax Credit for Student Parents Act. This bipartisan bill will make sure that student parents who are working to get a post-secondary degree, including vocational school and two and four-year universities, are eligible to receive the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC), which helps to offset working families’ child care expenses. “Parents who are going to school are often looking to get a degree to gain employment, especially in this modern economy,” said Rep. Schrier. “For many student parents, child care costs are a barrier to pursuing post-high school education. By making student parents eligible for the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, we will lower the cost of child care for families needing a boost and make it so parents can afford child care while they get their degree.” “Our workforce is changing rapidly, and as parents contemplate going back to school to meet these demands, they are faced with significant barriers, including the cost of childcare,” said Rep Meijer. “The common-sense, bipartisan Tax Credit for Student Parents Act ensures that all students, including those who are part-time, have access to child care resources. I am proud to join my colleague from Washington in introducing this bill, which will undoubtedly help parents looking to expand their education and training get the childcare assistance they need.” Right now, 22% of university undergraduate students, about 4 million people, are parents. And too often, the cost of child care is more expensive than the annual cost of in-state tuition at a public four-year university. It is past time to address this often-overlooked barrier so that parents can afford to learn a trade or earn a degree they need to enter the workforce. The Tax Credit for Student Parents Act will ensure that the CDCTC includes student parents by: Creating a deemed income for all student parents to make them eligible for the tax credit Expanding the … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

I won’t stop fighting until they receive it.” Liberty Military Housing is the privatized housing provider at JBLM. They are responsible for managing and developing family housing communities, building new housing, renovating existing housing, and demolishing and rebuilding existing housing in other areas. The full letter text can be found below andhere. Ms. Ramos, As Liberty Military Housing continues its ambitious six-year, $100 million renovation project at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), I wanted to make you aware of the concerns that my staff and I continue to receive about the extensive housing waiting list. I am also concerned that there was a 7.2-point drop in the FY2022 Tenant Satisfaction Survey. To be clear, I applaud the decision to renovate the homes at JBLM and will continue to support this work to ensure that JBLM becomes a Platinum A List installation. As of August 22, 2022, there are 5,139 homes on JBLM, 4,800 of which are occupied. There are only 124 homes vacant for renovation or another reason and 235 homes vacant for between occupancy-maintenance. There are currently 759 households on the waiting list. As you know, it is Department policy to rely on the private sector as the primary source of housing for accompanied and unaccompanied personnel that can receive a housing allowance. It is assumed that approximately one-third of servicemembers live in either government or privatized housing. Smith's Behavioral Health Crisis Care Centers Act Receives Support from Local and National Organizations 2022-09-28 2022 2022-09 Democrat House WA Adam Smith S000510 adamsmith.house.gov adamsmith https://adamsmith.house.gov/news/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) recently introduced the Behavioral Health Crisis Care Centers Act, which would provide access to funding for states, cities and counties, and tribal governments to build, operate, and expand one-stop crisis care centers. One-stop behavioral health crisis care centers provide critical crisis stabilization services and wraparound services to individuals experiencing a mental health or behavioral health crisis. Organizations working at the local and federal level have voiced their support for the Behavioral Health Crisis Care Centers Act. See below for statements of support for the Behavioral Health Crisis Care Centers Act. "Over the past decade, the City of Seattle's support of behavioral health services has grown dramatically due to greater awareness of how to serve people with mental health needs. We strive to provide individuals with holistic care, rather than sending them to hospitals or prisons. This movement has led to a growing need for organizations that can provide this type of care. Locally, we are working to coordinate our efforts with King County to increase the capacity and number of these centers, including through the County's Mental Illness and Drug Dependency tax. However, we face a severe shortage of available centers and beds in Seattle for those in need. "Congressman Smith's legislation will fill this critical gap by funding behavioral health crisis care centers. These centers are increasingly recognized as an alternative approach to help those in crisis. Building upon the model of the Downtown Emergency Services Center in Seattle, they provide not only a safe physical location for individuals, but also wraparound services to address their physical and mental health conditions and other needs. Critically, they also allow individuals to remain in their communities—deepening their sense of stability, allowing them to put down roots, and helping them heal through the support and care of their neighbors." - Mayor Bruce Harrell, City of Seattl… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

In 2020, President Trump signed an executive order to end Fulbright exchanges both to and from China and Hong Kong. “Restoring Fulbright exchanges with China and Hong Kong will help the United States build its China expertise, strengthen people-to-people ties and give Chinese participants an opportunity to experience the real United States and the benefits of academic freedom,” said Larsen, a co-chair of the bipartisan U.S.-China Working Group and author of a China White Paper published in December 2021. “The Trump Administration's decision to terminate Fulbright Programs with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was ill-considered, self-defeating, and short-sighted," said Beyer. "The exchange of Fulbright scholars between the U.S. and P.R.C. built a critical channel for building expertise on China and countered the increasingly negative depiction of the United States delivered by the Chinese Communist Party. Our legislation would reverse President Trump’s executive order and rebuild this critical program.” “Fulbright volunteers represent the United States abroad and forge connections with everyday people, even in countries where official relations are strained,” said Chu. “The decision by the Trump administration to end Fulbright exchanges with mainland China and Hong Kong was short-sighted and intended only to worsen U.S.-China diplomatic relations. The Restoring Fulbright Exchanges with China and Hong Kong Act will give Fulbright exchange students from across the United States the chance to return to China and Hong Kong again, helping to advance US interests diplomatically by improving communication and understanding between our countries.” “I applaud Reps. The Inflation Reduction Act delivers an unprecedented federal investment in clean energy and climate action. It is also estimated to reduce America’s carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030 through bold investments in electrification and energy-efficient products. For Washington state, the new law offers several types of savings on energy-efficient products and appliances. This includes up to: 50-100% discount on home energy efficiency and electric appliances 30% discount on home solar and battery installation $7,500 for electric vehicles $8,000 for heat pumps $5 per square foot for energy efficiency in commercial buildings “The Inflation Reduction Act is a huge victory for Washington state,” said DelBene. “We are leading the charge in tackling the climate crisis and expanding access to sustainable, clean energy resources. This new law lowers energy costs for families and small businesses while creating good-paying jobs across the state as our clean energy economy and manufacturing sectors grow.” “The Inflation Reduction Act matches our values and will enable us to act on our climate goals faster. Values are critically important, but the actions they lead to are the only thing that matters in the fight against climate change,” said Bothell Mayor Mason Thompson. “Thank you to Congresswoman DelBene and the rest of our federal delegation for passing this legislation. It gives us an opportunity to turn our values into actions faster, and we’re excited for the actions it’s going to lead to in Bothell.” “A key part of this work to making sure we are successful is having reliable funding that prioritizes investments in overburdened communities and that can build on the work our state is already doing across the economy for climate action… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

Dan Newhouse (R-WA) joined 50 of his colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd, U.S. Department of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack raising concerns over the recent acquisition of farmland near a U.S. military installation by a Chinese-based manufacturer with close links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The letter comes after a recent land acquisition near Grand Forks, North Dakota, by the Fufeng Group, a Chinese-based manufacturer with close links to the CCP. The area houses the Grand Forks Air Force Base, which is a military installation incredibly important for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. The move raises concerns about the CCP’s ability to conduct espionage operations on U.S. military installations and jeopardizing U.S. strategic interests. “At a time when the United States is engaged in great power competition with China, we must utilize every tool at our disposal to protect and defend the integrity of our military and national security, maintain military dominance, and maximize our global military readiness,” the lawmakers wrote. “Acquisitions of this magnitude pose a threat not only to our national security but also to our food security. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), at the beginning of 2021 foreign investors held a stake in approximately 37.6 million acres of U.S. agricultural land,” the lawmakers continued. “This trend is expected to increase over the next few years, raising concerns about the negative potential implications it will have on domestic food production and national food security.” The lawmakers concluded, “In light of these concerns to U.S. national security, we urge your departments to take effective action in addressing the potential national security risks that appear to arise from this transaction and what it means for the future of our national security.” You can read the full letter here … 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

Larson (CT-01), Dan Kildee (MI-05), and Drew Ferguson (GA-03) introduced legislation that would boost domestic baby formula production and get more product on shelves amid the continued shortage across the United States. The Bulk Infant Formula to Retail Shelves Act would temporarily lift tariffs on safe imported ‘base powder,’ a key component that is mixed with nutrients and other ingredients to make the formula that parents buy on store shelves or online. The current tariffs are 13.6% + $1.035/kg. While the formula crisis has eased slightly from its 86% out-of-stock rate high in May, it has only improved to 61%, an unacceptable level for parents who need to feed their children. In Washington state, 67% of store shelves are out of stock. Metro areas are hit harder, with Seattle’s average out-of-stock rate at 79%. Lifting the tariffs on base powder and increasing domestic manufacturing would be especially helpful for families participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), which must be used in brick-and-mortar retail stores and cannot be used for online purchases currently. About half the baby formula purchased in the United States is purchased through WIC. “In July, President Biden signed legislation that I introduced to make it cheaper to buy imported baby formula. While we’ve seen more formula on shelves since then, too many families are struggling to find and afford the food their children need,” said DelBene. “The legislation I’m introducing today will build on that progress by helping increase domestic formula production. I’m hopeful that this bill can move with the same speed and bipartisan support that the previous legislation had.” “Congresswoman DelBene has been a tireless champion in combating the ongoing infant formula shortage. In Washington state, violent crime (murder, aggravated assault, robbery, and rape) increased by 12.3% in 2021. “Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community and a key piece in tackling the rise in crime is making sure our local law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources they need to safely and effectively do their jobs. At the same time, to build trust between law enforcement and those they protect, we must have accountability. This package helps meet both those needs,” said DelBene. “We also cannot ignore the connection between gun violence and violent crime. Another key step the House has already taken that would address crime is stronger gun violence prevention measures such as an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, and outlawing high-capacity magazines.” The public safety package includes: The Invest to Protect Act (H.R. 6448) that would fund local police with grants to help small, local law enforcement agencies retain and recruit officers. At the same time, the bill invests in strong guardrails and accountability measures, including de-escalation training, responding to substance use disorders, supporting survivors of domestic violence, and promoting a duty of care. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement highlighting H.Res. 1030 ahead of Gold Star Mother's Day. This resolution designates Sept. 18-24, 2022, as Gold Star Families Remembrance Week, a national period to honor the sacrifices made by the families of U.S. military servicemembers who lost their lives in service to the nation. “We owe an enormous debt to the men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect our nation and the values we all hold so dear. But we also owe an enormous debt to those whom they have left behind, their widows, orphans, and other loved ones,” said Rep. Newhouse. “To them, the loss is as tangible as a missing family member at a chair at the table that can never be filled. With this resolution, we honor and recognize these families and commit to celebrating the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.” “When I think of Gold Star Families, I’m reminded of the phrase ‘all gave some; some gave all.’ There is not a day that goes by that these families don’t remember their loved ones who sacrificed their ‘all’, their life, to defend our freedoms,” said Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA). “The least we can do is dedicate a week to honoring and remembering them, too.” “We are forever indebted to our servicemembers, especially those who pay the ultimate price to protect our freedoms. When one member of the family serves, the entire family serves, and it’s our responsibility to support families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty,” said Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA). “I’m proud to join this resolution to honor our Gold Star families and recognize the sacrifice they have made to our nation.” "This week we recognize and honor our Gold Star families who have lost loved ones in service to our country and the sacrifices that both these fallen heroes and their family members have made in the spirit of freedom," said Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). “I always say that when someone joins the military, it’s not just a job – it’s a family comm… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

That’s why I am a proud cosponsor of the Wildfire Recovery Act, which will increase the federal government’s share of the FEMA fire response grant funding to make sure counties can recover from wildfire. It passed the House this week. I’m glad that this legislation will ensure counties will see increased funding to properly staff and fight wildfires. But fires don’t follow county lines and many times, neighboring fire departments will come to aid areas outside of their jurisdiction, exceeding budget projections and putting an unforeseen burden on localities. We saw this happen during the Evans Canyon Fire in 2020, when Kittitas County was excluded from Fire Management Assistance Grant funding while the neighboring county saw this awarded because that is where the fire was. Much more needs to be done to address this serious shortcoming and to create smarter grants that properly compensate local departments who are good neighbors and respond to wildfires outside of their jurisdictions.” 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

Smith Introduces Legislation to Expand National Service Coordinator Workforce 2022-09-15 2022 2022-09 Democrat House WA Adam Smith S000510 adamsmith.house.gov adamsmith https://adamsmith.house.gov/news/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) today issued the following statement after introducing the Expanding Service Coordinators Act, which would provide millions of dollars to improve the capacity and retention of our nation's service coordinator workforce. Service coordinators connect individuals and families living in federally assisted housing to a wide range of social services, making them a critical element of these programs. "Service coordinators are crucial to the success of federally assisted housing, but programs that fund the employment of service coordinators are currently strained. We desperately need federal funding to maintain and expand our country's service coordinator workforce to connect marginalized communities to critical social services, such as meal programs, health care, transportation, case management, and job training. This bill will fill that need by providing millions of dollars over the next five years to two primary service coordinator programs - the Multifamily Housing Service Coordinator Program and the Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency Service Coordinator Program - and incentivizing the employment of service coordinators in new affordable housing projects across the country. Vulnerable members of our communities, including seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals and families, rely on federally assisted housing. The Expanding Service Coordinators Act would bolster our nation's service coordinator workforce to elevate federally assisted housing in Washington's Ninth and across the country." The Expanding Service Coordinators Act is endorsed by several organizations, including American Association of Service Coordinators, Council of Large Public Housing Authorities, Compass Housing Alliance, KMG Prestige, LifeSTEPS, National Affordable Housing Managers Association, New England Resident Service Coordinators Inc., United Church Homes, WinnCompanies, MJ Housing Services, New Hampshire Association of Professional Service Coordinators, Volun… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

Thanks for holding this important hearing and I want to thank all of our witnesses for being here to talk about this important topic as well. As we sit in this hearing, parts of my district are burning. The Bolt Creek Fire has scorched nearly 10,000 acres across Snohomish and King counties. It’s forced families to evacuate and schools to close. Additionally, the fire is smothering the region’s sky with far-reaching smoke and ash. Air pollution obviously can be hazardous to anyone, but especially children, older adults, and those with existing health conditions like pneumonia and emphysema. And we’ve seen this happen before in my region with the 2015 Goodell Fire and the 2017 Suiattle Fire. As the climate crisis intensifies, these devastating wildfires are happening more frequently and with greater intensity. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

Dan Newhouse (R-WA) hosted a press conference to once again urge the Senate to pass his landmark legislation, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. Farmers and ranchers across the United States are in desperate need of a high-quality, reliable workforce, and the current H-2A guestworker program needs meaningful, bipartisan reform. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which passed the House for the second time in March 2021, creates a workforce solution for America’s agriculture industry. By creating a secure, reliable agriculture labor program, this legislation removes opportunities to work illegally in the United States, strengthens our border security, lowers food costs for Americans, and ensures we have a stable, legal workforce for our farms and ranches for years to come. Click here to hear Rep. Newhouse’s remarks. Rep. Newhouse was joined by the American Business Immigration Coalition Action (ABIC Action), National Council of Farmer Cooperatives (NCFC), AmericanHort, the International Fresh Produce Association, U.S. Apple Association, National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), and US Custom Harvesters, Inc. “Across the country dairy farms have gone out of business because the labor crisis is preventing them from making the decisions and investments necessary to continue to operate. In many cases, it is no longer workforce uncertainty that affects farmers’ business decisions – it’s the new, unfortunate reality that there just aren’t enough workers. National Milk Producers Federation is leading advocacy for reforms that answer the needs of dairy farmers and farmworkers in addressing these dire workforce challenges. Dairy needs reform that both protects our current workers and their families and grants our farmers meaningful access to a workable guestworker program. NMPF thanks Congressman Newhouse for his hard work and leadership to bring us closer to the ag labor reform that dairy, and our country, so badly need.” — National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) Senior Director… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) introduced companion legislation that would similarly extend land lease rights for the Chehalis Tribe, and spoke out in support of the Tribe during the bill’s markup before the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on May 19, 2022. “This will open the door to more economic opportunities for the Chehalis Tribe. The bill will provide the Tribe with the necessary level of flexibility to help finance and encourage economic development projects,” Sen. Cantwell said during the Senate Indian Affairs Committee markup in May. “The Chehalis Tribe – or, I believe, any other Tribes — should not be hindered because of the 1955 bill that limits Tribal ability to lease their land.” This bill would amend the Long-Term Leasing Act of 1955, which prohib… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

The legislation would make it easier for seniors to get the care they need and improve health outcomes by modernizing the antiquated prior authorization process in Medicare Advantage, which often still requires faxing documents to insurance companies. Nationally, 28 million seniors are enrolled in Medicare Advantage, including over 600,000 in Washington state. Many Medicare Advantage plans require providers to obtain prior authorization for certain medical procedures and tests before they can provide care to their patients. Prior authorization can play a role in ensuring people receive appropriate treatments and help control the cost of care. However, when misused, prior authorization can delay needed medical intervention and result in administrative burdens for providers. The bill would: Establish an electronic prior authorization process. Require the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) to establish a process for “real-time decisions” for items and services that are routinely approved. Improve transparency by requiring Medicare Advantage plans to report to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on the extent of their use of prior authorization and the rate of approvals or denials. Encourage plans to adopt prior authorization programs that adhere to evidence-based medical guidelines in consultation with physicians. The legislation is led in the House by Representatives Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Mike Kelly (PA-16), Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07), and Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08). It has over 320 cosponsors and the endorsement of over 500 organizations. “Seniors and their families should be focused on getting the care they need, not faxing forms multiple times for procedures that are routinely approved. This takes away valuable time from providers who on average spend 13 hours a week on administrative paperwork related to prior authorization,” said DelBene, Kelly, Be… 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T03:08:33Z

The United States has long recognized that the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, is vital to our national security and our economic prosperity and the region’s expected to account for over half of global economic growth in the next 30 years, but many of our allies and partners in the region face real threats. To address these opportunities and challenges, we have to focus on our long-term relationships by bolstering mutual defense relationships, enhancing trade cooperation, collaborating on technology and research, forging more resilient and secure supply chains, and supporting democracies that have been threatened and attacked in recent years. That’s why I joined Speaker Pelosi on a recent Congressional delegation to the region and to Taiwan. We didn’t go to change the status quo. The Taiwanese people are facing ongoing threats from the People’s Republic of China that would trample their vibrant democracy and put them under Beijing’s authoritarian rule. The PRC’s recent military exercises and trade sanctions against Taiwan following our visit have further validated all of these concerns. The bipartisan bill, which passed the House by a final vote of 293 to 133, now heads to the Senate for consideration. “Seven years ago, a Government Accountability Office study I requested during the emergence of Ebola found the U.S. lacks a comprehensive plan aimed at preventing and containing diseases through air travel and the U.S. should develop such a plan as soon as possible. Lessons learned from the Ebola and COVID-19 pandemics show the urgent need for a plan to ensure the safety of aviation crews, employees and passengers during future public health emergencies,” said Larsen, Chair of the Aviation Subcommittee. “I look forward to continue working with Rep. Beyer and my colleagues to get this bill over the finish line to keep the traveling public healthy and safe.” “A national aviation preparedness plan been could have saved lives at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic with a stronger, quicker response. It is imperative that we learn from those mistakes to do better in the future, because it is extremely unlikely that Covid will be the last pandemic," said Rep. Beyer. “House passage of this bill today is a big step toward answering the need for a coordinated national strategy to prevent spread of disease by air travel, a crucial element for pandemic response identified by government watchdogs and the U.N., among others. I thank Rep. Larsen for his leadership on this legislation, and urge the Senate to send it to the President for signature.” Larsen has long championed efforts to improve U.S. aviation safety as it relates to public health.
