Ralph Abraham announced Thursday that he will run for governor against Gov. John Bel Edwards. The northeast Louisiana Republican was just re-elected to his third term in Congress. Eddie Rispone, a Baton Rouge Republican businessman, is also challenging Edwards in next year's election for governor. Under Louisiana's system, all candidates, regardless of party, will appear on the Oct. 12, 2019, ballot. If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff between the top two vote-getters will be held Nov. 16, 2019. Abraham's announcement was expected. It follows the surprise announcement earlier this week from U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, also a Republican, that he will not run for governor. Over the past year, Kennedy's constant criticism of the Edwards administration teased a possible run. Abraham, 64, is a family physician from Richland Parish.
