Adams A000370 adams.house.gov adams https://adams.house.gov/media-center/press-releases scraper Washington, D.C. (October 5, 2023) — In the wake of the recent shooting at Morgan State University, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12),founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Caucus, released the following statement: “As a two-time HBCU Alum, I am personally impacted by news of any tragic occurrences happening on our campuses. This past Tuesday, five students at Morgan State University were injured in a shooting following the coronation of Ms. and Mr. Morgan State University. I remain thankful that none of the students were killed, but this devastating instance is yet another reminder that the gun violence facing our country is of dire concern, and one that must be addressed. I stand in solidarity with Morgan State University’s President, Dr. David Wilson, and the Morgan State University family, sending prayers to those affected by this senseless act. Our institutions are special places where students should feel safe and supported, and we will not let this moment deter Morgan State University or any other HBCU from its mission to provide a world class education for our students. I remain committed to supporting legislation to address the gun violence facing our country and working with my colleagues to address this critically important issue.” Background On Tuesday, October 5th, five people, including four students were injured by gunfire following a crowded homecoming event at Morgan State University, located in Baltimore, Maryland. All five of the victims are expected to survive. No arrests yet had been made. Following the events of the shooting, the university decided to cancel all remaining homecoming activities, classes, events, and activities until the perpetrator(s) are found. This is the first time in Morgan State History that homecoming festivities were canceled. Congresswoman Alma Adams represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District (Charlotte, Mecklenburg County). In 2015, she founded the first bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus in Congress. She is a double graduate of North Carolina A&T, the largest HBCU by enrollment in the United States. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T00:49:26Z
