Allen (R-Ga-12) issued the following statement today after the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) announcement to significantly scale back the definition of Waters of the United States (WOTUS). In 2015, under the Obama Administration, the EPA finalized a joint rule with the Army Corps of Engineers to expand the definition of WOTUS under the Clean Water Act, broadening the federal government's regulatory authority of virtually any place where water flows across the country. Congressman Allen has been a vocal opponent of the WOTUS rule and introduced legislation last year to have the rule repealed. The harmful and severely flawed WOTUS rule, finalized under the Obama Administration, was never in the best interest of our states, local governments and landowners, said Congressman Allen. Simply put, we do not need Washington bureaucrats overregulating smaller waterways such as backyard streams and puddles. The agencies' proposed rule will serve as a breath of fresh air for our farmers and ranchers in Georgia and throughout the country and I am eager to see the positive impacts this proposal will have on rural America. I thank the Trump Administration and acting EPA Administrator, Andrew Wheeler, for following through on the commitment to significantly scale back the WOTUS rule.
