Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), released the following statement after voting in support of the bipartisan Appropriations bills that will fund the government through September 30, 2020: I am encouraged that leaders in both parties were able to come together and forge a bipartisan compromise to keep our government open and working for the American people. I'm proud that we made much-needed investments in election security, Head Start and child care programs, as well as record-level funding for lifesaving medical research at the National Institutes of Health. The bill will also improve public health by raising the smoking age to 21 and making a historic investment in gun violence research. These investments will create jobs, bolster critical research and improve programs that have a real impact on North Texas families. It is my hope that this bipartisan agreement will foster a productive year ahead for Congress, where we can put aside our differences and do the job we were elected to do. Key Victories for North Texans: Investing in Better Schools and Job Training; programs for education for the disadvantaged will receive $17 billion, $453 million above 2019 and a record level. Job training programs will receive $5.4 billion, a $134 million increase. Invests in families and child care; the Child Care & Development Block Grant will receive $5.8 billion, $550 million over 2019 and a record level. Head Start receives $10.6 billion, $550 million over FY19 & a record level. Bolstering Lifesaving Medical Research at the NIH; $41.7 billion, a $2.6 billion increase and a record level, with significant funding for Alzheimer's Disease and brain research. Gun violence prevention; for the first time in more than 20 years, a total of $25 million at Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) for firearm injury and mortality prevention research. Election Security Grants to States; $425 million, a key priority that was not funded in 2019. Protecting Our Environment with investments in energy efficiency and renewables; the bill invests $2.8 billion in energy efficiency and renewables a $411 million (17%) increase above 2019.
