Res. 730, the Resolution Holding Stephen K. Bannon in Contempt of Congress: “Investigations into the events of January 6th are being conducted by several law enforcement entities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Justice, and the U.S. Capitol Police’s Office of Professional Responsibility. While the investigations remain ongoing, the FBI has already determined there is little evidence that Donald Trump or his associates coordinated the attack, and President Trump has already been acquitted by the U.S. Senate of the impeachment charges brought against him. If the FBI has come to the conclusion that there was not a conspiracy of coordination on that day, that is good enough for me. “While Congress does indeed have oversight powers, the authority of Congress to conduct investigations and issue subpoenas is limited. Congress cannot simply act as law enforcement. When the House of Representatives voted to hold former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and former Internal Revenue Service Director Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, on both occasions, most Democrats voted against this measure.
