Cindy Axne (IA-03) today issued the following statement thanking House Democratic Leadership for including tariff aid funding in the continuing resolution (CR) the House is expected to vote on tonight. This trade aid is nothing short of a lifeline to farmers struggling to make ends meet because of an unnecessary trade war. I don't support this Administration's trade policies and I certainly don't support the unprecedented amount of biofuel waivers this Administration has granted to big oil companies, said Rep. Axne. But I will never allow Congress to use farmers as political pawns. I'm glad Leadership has added the necessary language to ensure USDA can continue to assist farmers hurting from retaliatory tariffs. The Market Facilitation Program (MFP) was created to provide support to farmers struggling due to the on-going trade war. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is using its authority under the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Charter Act to borrow up to $30 billion from the U.S. Treasury to make these payments. Given that USDA is expected to reach the $30 billion cap this fall, Congressional action is required to continue making these payments on time. Last week, reports indicated that House Democrats were planning on blocking USDA from continuing these payments on time. On Monday, Rep. Axne broke with Democratic Leadership and urged House appropriators to include extensions for the commodity credit corporation (CCC) in the continuing resolution (CR) in order to ensure the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) can continue Market Facilitation Program (MFP) payments to struggling farmers.
