Cindy Axne(IA-03) to the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act, a package of domestic energy policy reforms and investments under consideration this week. Rep. Axne's amendment would expand funding eligibility for the legislation's Carbon Capture Program to include biofuels facilities. The funding provided by the program would support research and development efforts across Iowa's biofuels sector. Our biofuels facilities provide clean, renewable fuel for the country and help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions while providing good-paying jobs in Iowa's rural communities,said Rep. Axne.We need to be investing in every solution to address the threat of climate change and I'm pleased that the House voted to pass my amendment to ensure biofuels are a part of the pathway to a cleaner energy future. Many biofuels facilities already utilize carbon capture technology to make their product even more efficient, but further research and development will help build upon these successes. The Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act reforms domestic energy policy and provides significant investments towards a transition to a low-carbon future. The Carbon Capture Program expanded by the legislation would direct the Department of Energy to conduct research, development, demonstration, and commercial application activities for carbon capture technologies. The legislation also includes provisions similar tolegislation introduced byRep. Axne to create a National Climate Bank to support private investment in renewable energy and efficiency projects. Additionally, provisions of theRenewable Fuel Standard Integrity Act legislation cosponsored by Rep. Axne were included in the legislation. This would set an annual deadline for oil refineries to request an exemption from the RFS and require the EPA to publicly release the names of all refineries requesting an exemption, including the amount of gallons requested to be waived. We are grateful to Representatives Cheri Bustos and Cindy Axne for introducing this amendment that would allow the biofuels industry access to critical research and development funding on carbon capture technologies, said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor. The dynamic coproducts of biofuels production, including carbon dioxide, play an important role in the agricultural supply chain. This amendment allows the industry to keep innovating in the clean energy sector and driving progress nationwide as we work towards a low-carbon future. Rep. Axne has been a strong supporter of biofuels since coming to Congress. In May, Axnesecured supportfor pandemic relief for biofuels in the last coronavirus relief package to pass the House.
