Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the program has helped Americans battle the opioid crisis by making it easier for them to safely dispose of their old or unwanted prescriptions. Earlier this year, the DEA's 15th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day collected 37,290 pounds of unused or expired drugs in Pennsylvania alone, and 474.5 tons across the country the largest amount collected since the program begin in 2010. The program is similar to a local initiative in Hazleton called the Drop the Drugs Van, which has removed 152 pounds of drugs from the community's streets to date. The reality is that there isn't a community in Pennsylvania or across our country that hasn't been impacted by the opioid crisis, Barletta said. Over the last two years, nearly 10,000 Pennsylvanians died from drug-related overdoses. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and the Drop the Drugs Van help people get rid of theirold medications in a way that is safe, convenient, and responsible. I am proud to support initiatives like these that provide all of us with an opportunity to raise awareness about the opioid crisis while also preventing excessdrugs from falling into the wrong hands. This Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m, police departments, shopping centers, and other locations will be receiving unwanted prescription drugs as part of the 16th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. With Pennsylvania being one of the states hardest hit by this epidemic, finding solutions to the opioid crisis has been one of Barletta's top priorities in Congress. Just yesterday, President Donald J. Trump signed into law H.R. 6, theSUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, which included Barletta's H.R. 5294, theTreating Barriers to Prosperity Act of 2018. This legislation allows communities to use Appalachian Regional Commission funding for everything from attracting doctors to putting in broadband for telemedicine, to spurring economic growth and helping those struggling with addiction by breaking down barriers to employment.
