They were joined by Schools and Homes in Education (SHINE) Program students from the Heights Murrary SHINE Center. SHINE is a successful, nationally recognized afterschool program in Carbon, Luzerne, and Schuylkill counties geared towards grades K-8with afocuson a project-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum. For years, I have watched SHINE change the lives of children across Northeast Pennsylvania, said Barletta. SHINE is a perfect example of what successful afterschool programming can do for children in the Commonwealthand across the country, and it was a pleasure to work with both Senator Yudichak and Caroline Jonesto promote the program and help students achieve their dreams. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Congressman Barletta and Caroline Jones in writing a book that promotes STEAM based educational principles and benefits the SHINE afterschool program which has succeeded in bringing quality afterschool programming to Northeastern Pennsylvania, said Senator John Yudichak. We Saved the Bees and the Butterfliesis based on two young SHINE students who are curious about the decline in bee and butterfly populations. The students embark on a quest to save the bees and butterflies while learning about theSTEAMcurriculum. All proceeds of the book go directly to the SHINE program, which Barletta and Yudichak have been longtime supporters of.The two began promoting the program four years ago after the success of the original SHINE Program in Carbon County,andtheyhave been instrumental in its expansion in Luzerne and Schuylkill Counties. Barletta hasconsistentlyfought for programs that support afterschool education. In April, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos met with Barletta in his Washington, DC office to discuss the importance of afterschool programs, touting the success of SHINE. In 2015, Barletta saved federal funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, which is the only federal funding source for afterschool programs, when it was set to be eliminated. Earlier this year, Barletta helped secure a $20 million increase in funding for the program, bringing total funding for it up to $1.2 billion. He was previously named an Afterschool Hero by the Afterschool Alliance, dubbed an Afterschool Champion by the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network, and was the only House member to receive the Congressional Voice for Children Award from the National Parent Teacher Association in 2016 due to his leadership in saving federal funding for afterschool programs. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
