Barry Moore (AL-02) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court overturned a New York law restricting the carrying of concealed firearms. Last year, Moore joined an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of the plaintiffs in this case. “The right to bear arms is not a second-tier right, and an attack on the Second Amendment is an attack on all our constitutional rights,” said Moore. “I'm encouraged that the Supreme Court recognized that no state can require an American citizen to petition their government for permission to exercise a right guaranteed by the Constitution.” Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the 6-3 majority, said that the law’s requirement of New Yorkers who want a license to carry a handgun in public to show “proper cause” that the weapon is specifically needed for self-defense “violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms in public.” The law is expected to affect similar unconstitutional laws in other states restricting the Second Amendment's exercise. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-08T02:39:01Z |
