"Unfortunately, although a routine reality when Black in America, Mr. Goodson's murderer was one of the very individuals who swore to protect and serve him and his family," Beatty wrote. "Yet, as you are aware, his last steps were taken as he opened his front door to enter the safety of his own home—the place that should have been his sanctuary, as opposed to the scene of his unwarranted execution." She later added, "I do not want Mr. Goodson's death to have been in vain, so my review of the investigation will only serve as the beginning of the work I will complete in partnership with my congressional colleagues to make systemic, long-term changes to the operations of police departments nationwide."
