Washington Updated: April 22, 2020 662-335-9003 Edition: Coronavirus Cases are Increasing Among African Americans High Alert - Continue to Shelter In and Social Distance - High Alert CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 Response to Recovery On April 1, 2020, the State of Mississippi began its "shelter-in-place" order to help flatten the curve of the Coronavirus cases, instead the numbers continue to climb, particularly among African Americans. Access to hospitals across the state with enough ICU beds would not be there to meet the needs of the public should the urgency arise. That is why I want to appeal to everyone to shelter in place, visit retail and grocery stores only when necessary, and maintain social distance. I am calling on Mayors, County Supervisors, and other elected officials to take local action to help curtail the spread. This is a matter of life and death and the very life you save may be your own. Our health care workers are exhausted working around the clock and putting their families second to care for others. That is why, I want to appeal to constituents of the Second Congressional District the seriousness of Coronavirus and how it is taking lives. The map and table below gives you the total number of cases and deaths within the African American and White populations. An enlarged copy of both the map and table are attached.
