Vladimir Putin will kill thousands, destroy the lives of millions, and produce ruinous economic consequences for Russia and Ukraine. His obvious intent is to crush Ukrainian freedom and expand his Stalinist rule by fear and raw military power. As Western sanctions bite into the Russian economy, Putin has resorted to the threat of nuclear war. If we needed a reminder of the existential need for a military capable of defending against a madman with his finger on the nuclear trigger, we have it. There is much that will be said about how we have ended up here. But that’s for later. What we need now is for the countries of the civilized world to rise up, as they are doing, and together make certain that Putin pays a severe, heavy, and lasting price for what he has chosen to do. We can begin by supporting Ukraine, Europe, and NATO, by rapidly providing weapons and war materiel to those defending against Putin’s aggression. We have begun and must continue to isolate Russia, economically, with the strongest sanctions possible. We must strengthen our NATO allies adjacent to Russia so that any future attempt by Putin to initiate another unprovoked attack is met with overwhelming force. Also, let’s immediately discontinue purchasing oil from Russia and remove obstacles preventing the drilling of oil and gas wells on our public lands and the construction of pipelines to carry our oil and gas to market. | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-08T02:06:17Z |
