On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 innocent Americans were murdered by terrorists who hijacked airplanes for use as weapons of fear and mass carnage. During these dark hours – at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, and in a field Shanksville, PA – our nation and the world witnessed true evil. But in those moments, we also saw incredible heroism, including that of the first responders who ran into heavy smoke and flames without any hesitation. We continued to see the strength of American patriotism, courage, and resiliency in the aftermath of 9/11 as our nation deployed our brave warriors overseas to defend our homeland and deny terrorists a safe haven from which to plan future attacks. 20 years since 9/11, we continue to vow: “we will never forget.” As one nation, we reflect on the tragic events of that horrific day and the sacrifices made in the aftermath by countless Americans (and our allies) to promote peace, liberty, and security around the globe. To many of us, these sacrifices are as real as ever. The recent scenes coming out of Afghanistan are heartbreaking for all who had hoped we would leave the country and its people in good and capable hands. And the devastating news of the 13 American troops killed in Afghanistan should weigh heavily on our country’s leadership, just as it will continue to weigh heavily on the heart and soul of our nation. Together, we honor these fallen heroes who bravely carried out their mission to save tens of thousands of lives in Afghanistan, despite the threat of attack.
