Mark Warner (D-VA) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) sent a letter to the Virginia General Assembly, urging for prompt action to be taken to protect abortion access for all Virginians. This letter comes after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which undermined reproductive health care and stripped away the constitutional right to choose. Since that ruling, several states have moved to further restrict or ban abortion access. “We are also concerned that Governor Youngkin has indicated that he plans to take Virginia in a similar direction. Shortly after Dobbs was decided, he directed Republican members of the General Assembly to craft legislation to significantly limit abortion access in Virginia,” wrote the lawmakers. “Attacks on reproductive freedom disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, including low-income women, women of color, young Americans, and individuals living in rural communities.” During the midterm elections, voters in states across the nation rejected extreme abortion bans.
