Bonamici has long advocated for passage of H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act, and oversaw its progress as Chair of the Education and Labor Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human Services. The legislation would help confront and eliminate gender-based wage discrimination by strengthening salary data collection and transparency, holding employers accountable for pay discrimination, requiring employers to prove that a pay disparity exists for legitimate reasons, improving enforcement tools, and more. Bonamici spoke in support of the Paycheck Fairness Act on the House floor. Video can be viewed here. "The Equal Pay Act has been law for more than a half century, but in 2021, equal pay for equal work is still not a reality for many women, especially women of color," Bonamici said on the House floor. "This is an injustice to millions of working families. Closing the wage gap is an economic imperative… By advancing the Paycheck Fairness Act, we can restore the original intent of the Equal Pay Act and finally make equal pay for equal work a reality." Later this week the House is also expected to expand protections for workers by passing H.R. 1195, the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act.
