The bill improves the financial stability of the National Flood Insurance Program, increases the role of private markets, and ensures more accurate mapping and flood risk estimates. The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration. “The federal flood insurance program needs real reforms that strengthen the program so property owners have affordable and reliable flood insurance options when they need it,” said Bost. “Because of inaccurate FEMA flood maps, I’ve heard from residents and municipalities across Southern Illinois that are rightfully upset. They are trapped into paying premiums for flood insurance they will never use or paying thousands of dollars out-of-pocket to appeal the map’s accuracy.
