Today Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) voted for the House and Senate compromise F.Y. 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that provides necessary authorities and funding for America's military. The NDAA authorizes $521.3 billion for the Department of Defense base budget and $63.7 billion for Overseas Contingency Operations. The NDAA passed the House on a 300 to 119 bipartisan vote. Congressman Brooks' statement: Today the House passed the FY15 National Defense Authorization Act, thereby providing for America's national security and helping our men and women in uniform successfully accomplish their missions. President Obama's FY15 NDAA base budget request cut national security funding by $31 billion from his FY14 budget, thereby forcing Congress to make numerous, difficult funding decisions. I'm pleased Congress, in a bipartisan effort, came together to both fund national defense while minimizing the military family compensation and benefits cuts sought by the Obama Administration. The NDAA underscores the importance of North Alabama's contribution to national securityby providing increased priority to ballistic missile defense, modernization of Army National Guard UH-60 helicopters, and body armor allocations (a potential economic boost for 3M Decatur which provides technologies to make lighter body armor). In addition, this legislation authorizes $220 million in funding for the development of a new rocket propulsion system that will reduce America's dependence on Russian rocket engines. The NDAA also supports an agreement between Israel and the United States for co-production of Iron Dome, thus helping with security needs for the Israeli populace while increasing the likelihood of Iron Dome interceptor production and jobs in the Tennessee Valley. Congressman Brooks is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, sitting on the Strategic Forces and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittees.
