Evan Hassman and Hunter Burley, students at Erie High School, received first place for their app, “In Space, Out of Gas.” The computer-based role-playing game written in the Scratch programming language challenges users to explore a perilous space environment. “I’m incredibly proud of everyone who participated in the Congressional App Challenge this year. This challenge encourages students around the country to develop a STEM skillset and in doing so, prepare for a future career that contributes in important ways to the American economy,” stated Congressman Ken Buck. “I applaud Evan and Hunter for investing their time and effort in this creative app idea.” The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide competition aimed at promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. Students have the opportunity to code an app of their choice, either individually or in teams.
