Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) released the following statement after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with President Donald Trump at the White House today: When it comes to border security, time and again House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Democrats in Congress have placed their own political agenda ahead of the American people who want commonsense legislation that will secure our southern border. While there are many issues that Americans may have legitimate policy disagreements about, ensuring the American people are safe and our border security is robust should not be one of them. Achieving real border security is important for our national security. While many individuals illegally crossing our southern border are people fleeing violence or just looking for a better life, there are also hardened criminals and sex traffickers looking to come into our country. Furthermore, a porous southern border is a vulnerability that could be exploited by terrorists looking to make their way to the United States. Additionally, in the face of a national opioid crisis that takes the lives of our friends, family members, and neighbors on a daily basis, securing our southern border is absolutely critical. Estimates state that as much as 90 percent of heroin in the U.S. markets originates in Mexico and comes across our southern border. Unfortunately, it appears that Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Democrats in Congress are unwilling to come to the negotiating table. Instead they are seemingly committed to shutting down the government unless President Trump accepts a spending package that fails to include commonsense and much-needed border security funding. I am disappointed that Democrat leaders in Congress are once again using the threat of a government shutdown to try and railroad President Trump and Republicans in Congress instead of sitting down and working to find common ground to avert a government shutdown. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
