Trump extends the authorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through the end of September 2021.Congressman Earl L. "Buddy" Carter (R-Ga.) fought for this extension for more than a year, while working on long-term reforms for the program. "It is good news that the NFIP has been extended for another year,"said Carter."This extension ensures the rug will not be pulled out from underneath endangered populations as we work to make much needed long-term reforms for the program. Now, during this extension, we should implement a full reauthorization of the program to increase financial stability without forcing property owners to drop their coverage through unaffordable rates. Congress should encourage private insurance to compete with the federal government to lower rates, significantly improve flood mapping to be more accurate and better align rates to risk.
