(Sept. 17, 2020) – Today, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) called on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General Joseph Cuffari to fully investigate alleged medical misconduct, including forced hysterectomies, at the Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) facility in Irwin County, GA. "If true, this allegation is a serious human rights violation by DHS medical employees," wrote Rep. Burchett. "Federal employees and contractors are given the public's trust to serve the best interests of our country, but they must be removed if they willingly abuse their position in our government." Rep. Burchett's letter follows a whistleblower complaint filed with DHS Inspector General Cuffari on September 14, 2020. Along with the accusation of forced hysterectomies, the whistleblower complaint also describes poor COVID-19 mitigation practices that risk the health of DHS employees and migrants. This includes lack of coronavirus testing and housing healthy migrants with potentially COVID-19-positive detainees. Rep.
