https://byrne.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/new-report-confirms-federal-government-s-poor-red-snapper-data-byrne New Report Confirms Federal Governments Poor Red Snapper Data, Byrne Says 2015-12-15 2015 2015-12 Republican House AL Bradley Byrne B001289 byrne.house.gov     legacy Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) today drew attention to a new report that outlines serious flaws with the federal governments data collection efforts, especially as it relates to Red Snapper in the Gulf of Mexico. The new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the federal government has failed to develop a comprehensive strategy to guide its data collection efforts. The report also highlights the lack of communication with stakeholders as it relates to data collection efforts. The GAO report concludes that without a comprehensive strategy, (the National Marine Fisheries Service) may have difficulty ensuring that the variety of steps it is taking to improve data collection are prioritized so that the most important steps are undertaken firstFurther, without communicating the strategy and NMFS progress in implementing it, NMFS may have difficulty building trust among its stakeholders, and these stakeholders may have difficulty tracking the agencys efforts. Byrne said: This new report from the Government Accountability Office confirms what I have been saying for years now: the federal government is doing a terrible job of counting the number of fish in the Gulf and estimating how many fish are caught. The impact from this failure of government bureaucracy is particularly harmful to our coastal communities in Southwest Alabama. Instead of outlining a plan to address the concerns raised in the report, it seems the National Marine Fisheries Service is asking for more federal money. Instead of feeding a flawed government agency, I believe the best course of action is to limit the involvement of the federal government and instead allow the Gulf states to be responsible for data collection and stock assessments. By making the states responsible for the data, we will have more accurate data which will lead to a longer Red Snapper season in the Gulf. Earlier this year, the House passed H.R. 1355, the Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act, which included three of Congressman Byrnes reforms designed to improve data collection and lead to a longer Red Snapper season. The provisions would: Repeal the inflexible quotas for the Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper fishery Extend state water boundaries for each Gulf state to nine nautical miles Remove data collection and stock assessments from federal control. H.R. 1355 passed the House by a vote of 225 to 152 and it now awaits action in the Senate. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
