The Carson amendment increases funding for the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program to $994 million. It will support research for traumatic brain injuries, PTSD, toxic exposures, cancer, chronic disease, limb loss, and other conditions tied to military service. “When Americans answer the call to serve, we have a responsibility to support them when they return home,” said Congressman Carson. “I’m especially proud to pass my bipartisan amendment during intense political division and nationwide cuts to medical research. This funding will save lives.” Carson’s amendment passed as part of the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2027, a bipartisan appropriations package. The bill also includes a landmark federal investment of more than $1.6 billion to replace and modernize the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center campus in Indianapolis, plus funds healthcare, military construction and servicemember housing, and related programs for veterans and their families across the country.
